Got a chance to see Lady Terminator on the big screen tonight. Schlock like this is great to see with a crowd because you get everybody reacting to it at the same time. But while this is certainly cheesy, I think I’d previously underrated it as an action movie. Paced more relentlessly than any Terminator movie other than the first, and goes way harder in its action sequences than you’d expect for the budget. A capital G Great B-movie.

Leák (Mystics in Bali, 1981), dir. H. Tjut Djalil

TREKMATCH! # 325 - DS9's "The Ship" vs 1981's Mystics in Bali
MYSTICS IN BALI aka LEÁK
An American tourist who just loves learning about evil magic all over the world convinces a local dude to put her in touch with a witch. They have a real good time turning into pigs and snakes and eating mice together and etc, and also the witch turns the American into a leak (or penanggalan) a variation on a common southeast Asian spirit that is a flying head trailing its guts like a kitestring behind it. Yeah, the effects might not always be top notch, but it's got a great creepy atmosphere amplified by many of the witch encounters taking place in sparse dark swamps.
GRADE: B+
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE - "The Ship"
Sisko and an away team find a crashed Jem'Hadar ship so they get entrenched in a brutal battle with a Vorta and her soldiers for the secrets. Also in this episode is one of O'Brien's best friends that we've never met before ever - think he'll make it out alive? (He does not).
GRADE: B-
Victory to Mystics in Bali, so Trek is only up 163-162!

Michael After Midnight: Mystics In Bali
Tumblr media
Some things are nearly impossible to adequately explain. Some things are just absolutely impossible to perfectly sum up in any meaningful way, as they need to be seen to truly be believed. Mystics in Bali is one such film; I almost didn’t review it, not because it’s not interesting enough to review or anything, but because this film is so awesomely, mind-bendingly insane tt is hard to truly do it justice with a summary… but, fuck it, this film deserves recognition and praise, so here goes nothing:
The story is of an American woman named Cathy going to, you guessed it, Bali in an effort to research Leyak magic for her book on voodoo and black magic. Her lover Mahendra says it is the most powerful black magic of all, and it can be used to kill, and the two soon meet an ancient, creepy witch known as the Queen of the Leyak, who leads the Leyak cult. Cathy and the Queen come under a sort of arrangement so that Cathy can learn of the magic, but soon enough she is under the spell of the Queen and turned into a Penanggalan, which is, I shit you not, a vampiric severed head with its stomach and entrails dangling below it as it flies about searching for pregnant women to suck the children out of. Things only get more insane and surreal from here… the question that remains is, can Mahendra save Cathy from being a black magic slave, or is she cursed to serve the Leyak Queen forever?
This film is just incredibly, endearingly insane. It hits all the right notes for perfection: the Queen is an evil, cackling hag who can’t go a single scene, no, a single sentence, without cackling like she has just been told the funniest thing on Earth, the Penanggalan is a delightfully gory creature straight out of Indonesian mythology, the special effects range from cheesy and trashy to actually really damn good, and the whole movie is just so frikkin’ weird! The movie ends with a massive wizard duel that doesn’t look like it would be out of place in a mystical kung fu movie, and honestly, this whole movie gives off the wonderful trashiness of a low-budget kung-fu movie from the 70s.
This movie’s biggest draw is that it is showcasing a mythology not typically seen; can you name another movie with Leyak or Penanggalan in them? I guess it does help this is an Indonesian movie, and a landmark one at that, so showing off the gory horror of their myths and legends to the most pure and fullest extent is not as difficult. And if this film doesn’t get you interested in looking more into this stuff, well, I don’t know what to tell you.
I think I should end it here. This seems like a pretty short review, huh? Well, that’s mostly because there is not much I can say about this that isn’t better seen for yourself; this movie is an experience, plain and simple, and me talking about it is just the epitome of “You had to be there.” Lucky for you, this movie is in the public domain, and can easily be found online; hell, it’s free to stream for anyone who has Amazon Prime! If you have an hour and a half to spare, I wholeheartedly recommend watching this insane masterpiece. This might be the best movie about evil witches ever made (with apologies to Hocus Pocus).
Apparently, director H. Tjut Djalil’s filmography is full of bizarre films much like this one. This movie got quite a boost from being talked about in 2010 by James Rolfe, then again by RedLetterMedia in 2015, and again this year by Hotdiggedydemon, but his other movies haven’t had similar treatment from big online names like this as far as I’ve seen, and with names like Lady Terminator they have to be worth a watch. Maybe I’ll take it upon myself to check out his other works and give them they boost they deserve, because if they’re even half as awesome and entertaining as this movie, they’re still better than a lot of movies I could mention.
