New Intentions: Olive Frascherson learns the life of a teenager at Goldeneye Academy making new friends in the way. Being some of them George Beard and Harold Hutchins. Then, she meets again with her twin sister, Isabella Frascherson and her childhood friend, Daniel Layvers, who is now the vice president at the student council. Just when everything goes right, she soon meets Mr. Krupp, the new principal and a kid named "Candy", president at the student council. She, along with her new friends live different adventures to defeat monsters who seek for destruction and villains who seek for domination. Will they make it with Captain Underpants's help? The Mortifying Incident Of The Mushroom Infection: When everything seemed fine in Piqua, some strange sort of mushroom starts infecting Jerome Horwitz to finally infecting the whole city, turning everyone into some sort of mushroom zombies! Lucky for George, he has Harold and company by his side and will protect each other from the infected Mexican AU: It's almost like Captain Underpants but what if instead of being in Piqua was it in Guadalajara? What if instead of Jerome Horwitz, it was Primaria Itzani? and What if instead of having a few villains, they would fight all of Mexico's current problems in society? Next Gen: George and Harold after marrying Lisa and Billy and had their children respectively. Just like 6 years after the 12th books events, specifically with Nik Beard and his new best friend, Kei Hutchins revive Captain Underpants making a new invention and bringing him to life so that he watches over the city, visits them to their new treehouse and save the school (If they're unlucky, the whole city or planet) from evil Tied Up Obsession: Harold Hutchins, after being saved from a group of bullies by Erica Wang become best friends, until after 2 years of knowing each other, Erica leaves Jerome Horwitz temporaly, which leads Harold to meeting George Beard, but at second 0 that he met George, a series of murders have been going on! Will Harold solve this case with the few friends he has? Happy Tree Underpanty Comics: When nothing interesting happened, Jerome Horwitz received an invitation to unknown lands, which Mr. Krupp couldn't say no to, due to the fact that it was obligatory. Resulting in George, Harold, Mr. Krupp and the rest of the school be in Happy Tree Land and meeting new students from there and somehow being in wholesome, crazy, dangerous and bloody situations that can't come in handy easily. Underpanty Fairytales: When it's about alternate situations, We have George III, prince of Piqlands, and a common forest boy named Harold, who live incredibly fantasious adventures with their principal Benjamin, mostly known as Underpanty knight. Rest In Blood: When 20 kids received an invitation to a supposed game contest to receive a free toy, however, they soon realize that it was a terrible trick that leads them to participate in a bloody game where they all have to kill each other, a bloody game named "R.I.B." which stands for...Rest In Blood Genderbent: Meet Gwen Beard and Harriet Hutchins! Gwen is George's genderbend self and Harriet is Harold's. Remember that now, because in this AU, it's most likely in the books, but the genders are all bent! Savage Students: A normal day at Jerome Horwitz becomes a whole nightmare when George and Harold, after being forbidden to draw and write their comics and having their treehouse to the ground start becoming ferally insane, now acting like a couple of animals seeking for their main prey: Mr. Krupp, since he was the one who planned it all. Now the rest of the school has to survive and not fall to those 2's claws

Transcending Advertising

Herbert Bayer first became involved with Container Corporation of America (CCA) when Walter Paepcke, at the suggestion of his wife Elizabeth, began commissioning advertisements from avant-garde artists and designers, advocating for a collaborative relationship between art and industry. After completing several innovative advertisements, Bayer designed an exhibition for CCA in 1945 titled “Modern Art in Advertising,” which opened at the Art Institute of Chicago before traveling across the country.[1] Bayer went on to serve as a consultant to CCA and eventually became Chairman of the Department of Design (later renamed the Department of Visual Communication), where he had control over all visual aspects of the corporation.

Bayer became involved in CCA’s “Great Ideas of Western Man” series, after Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke began participating in a “Great Books” discussion group led by Robert M. Hutchins and Mortimer Adler, who worked with Encyclopedia Britannica on the publication of the monumental Great Books of the Western World series. The Paepckes came up with the idea of an advertising series based on quotes from classic “great books.” Adler was able to supply the quotes, centered around moral, philosophical, and political issues, from his Syntopicon, a detailed index of core ideas of the Western canon. A small committee led by Bayer, who had been selected as art director for the new series, then determined which artists would illustrate or interpret each quotation, with substantial creative license given. The varied interpretations featured the work of a range of artists and designers, including Paul Rand, Alvin Lustig, E. McKnight Kauffer, René Magritte, Joseph Cornell, Herbert Matter, Willem de Kooning, Ben Shahn, and Bayer himself.[2] Beginning in the 1950s, CCA’s “Great Ideas” campaign lasted 25 years, including more than 190 advertisements that reached the public through inclusion in popular periodicals and printed folios.

Cooper Hewitt’s current exhibition, Herbert Bayer: Bauhaus Master, features some of his designs for CCA, including three advertisements for the “Great Ideas” series. Ignoring the rules of conventional print advertising, the campaign replaces direct reference to the effectiveness of the product with an effort to project the personality or character of the corporation.[3] Recognizing that the products of CCA—including paperboard containers and folding cartons—are not particularly enthralling, Bayer instead sought to focus on conveying the corporation’s identity as humanistic, dynamic, and aspirational. This particular advertisement by Bayer promotes moral and cultural awareness, featuring a quote by Abraham Lincoln from an 1861 speech: “I hold that while man exists it is his duty to improve not only his own condition but to assist in ameliorating mankind.” The power of Lincoln’s words is amplified by the central black circle and thin, blue geometric form above, with their indistinct borders subtly suggesting a resistance to containment or egocentrism. Although the company name appears across a thin, red rectangular strip along the bottom, above a small company logo, Bayer transforms an advertisement for mundane, short-lived paper packaging into a compelling call for civic responsibility.

Carey Gibbons is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History of Art & Design Department at the Pratt Institute. She previously worked as a Cataloguer in the Drawings, Prints & Graphic Design Department at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

MADONNA & SWAE LEE - CRAVE [4.56] In 1995, Madonna released “You’ll See,” and Swae Lee was born. Twenty-four years later...

Katherine St Asaph: I'll leave aside the fact that this is a song where one singer tells another singer nearly one-third their age about how their "cravings get dangerous" and how they "shouldn't play with this," except to note that it is a fact, and not a particularly comfortable one. The less pressing question: Why? Why is Madonna recording Starrah songs with Swae Lee? (I'd ask "why is she recording songs so heavily Auto-Tuned," but I heard her do "Like a Prayer" at Eurovision, so I know why.) Does she think this will get airplay? [4]

Edward Okulicz: Madonna isn't too old to be a sex object. I mean, honestly, she looks like she's in her 40s. More people would do her than would do me. But oh god, she sounds like she has no actual interest in sex and is just going through the motions. The points are because Swae Lee almost, almost, makes me think that he's up for this encounter. That's not the way you'd expect this to go, is it? [3]

Alfred Soto: We know well how her cravings "get dangerous," and maybe Swae does too -- is that why he's recessive, almost frightened for the first time? At any rate, the trap beat on "Crave" allows Madonna to bask in the empathetic powers of that still captivating husk; there's a moment when she elides the sh in "I don't think we should wait for this" for maximum effect. No other vocalist would get away with it. Whether "Crave" storms up the charts we'll see. [6]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The artificiality of every aspect of this, from Madonna's chopped up and processed vocal performance to the ertatz "Dreamcatcher"-crossed with Ty Dolla $ign guitar&B beat, works to its favor. "Crave" is a song about the uncanny naturalism of desire, the discomfort of the distance between what you want and what you have. It's not entirely successful in its pursuit of that vibe, but Swae Lee's vocal performance, as longing as ever, tips it over into comprehensibility. [6]

Katie Gill: When was the last really good Madonna song? She's been consistently putting out music and yet the last song of hers that I can think of and think "yeah, that was a solid Madonna song" was back in the late 2000s. She's had plenty of years to build up her brand; even her more recent work should still sound undeniably like herself. But this doesn't. It sounds like Halsey or Daya, a song that somebody else passed over and Madonna snapped up at the last second. But bitch, she's Madonna. Why is she not owning her sound? [3]

David Moore: I'm finding it hard to figure out Madonna's game plan with these -- a bunch of generic duets in a grab-bag of trendy styles that sound simultaneously expensive and flimsy. Swae Lee is more game than I'd expect, but they both sound lost in a morass. [4]

Vikram Joseph: Madonna has rarely sounded quite so becalmed or so anonymous as she does here on this sultry, extremely modern pop track; perhaps the heavy autotuning and slick production is a conscious attempt to reflect the impersonality of moving to a new city on the far shores of the Atlantic. The overall effect is kind of reminiscent of Lykke Li's hard shift towards glimmering sadgirl R&B on last year's So Sad, So Sexy, especially when Swae Lee's sleepy-eyed rap drifts in and out like a warm breeze -- much like the song as a whole, it leaves a familiar, soft-focus impression that fades to emptiness in no time at all. [6]

Andy Hutchins: It's sincerely awesome that Madonna is still trying to make sex jams at 60, but a delivery that sounds like Gwen Stefani's pout with two spoonfuls of marbles in her mouth appeals to no demographic I know of. And Swae suggesting his partner "ride me like a wave" after the jarring "ride me like a cruise" from "Sunflower" makes me think that his preferences are as painful as his metaphors -- "Surfboard/Surfboard" was more specific, a decent double entendre, and part of an extended riff that made sense and was playful. "Drunk in Love," instructively, made famous person drunk sex sound indulgent and spontaneous and fun; Madge and Swae sound tired, and their beat sounds cheaper than anything else I've ever heard from Mike Dean. [3]

Ryo Miyauchi: The lonely acoustic-pop is an understated, almost muting sound to pair with someone with a star power like Madonna. Her voice being placed at a remove can likewise scan as an opportunity not taken to really mine from that uncontrollable desire she keeps alluding to in the chorus. But not acting upon impulses here feels like the stronger move, especially because Madonna has shown she can indulge if she feels inclined. She leaves lines with an ellipsis in the chorus, fishing for the other to take the bait. The lack of action is as frustrating as it is tantalizing. [6]
