Ancient Love Poetry & The Last Immortal - connection post
Warning: Contains spoilers for the first series so skip post if you haven't watched it and do not want to be spoiled.
Ancient Love Poetry - Origin of Yuan Qi
Once upon a time, there were three realms - god realm, immortal realm and demon realm (no human realm yet).
In the god realm, the most respected are the four true gods - born from heaven and earth and are responsible for the peace of the three realms. Two of those true gods are Bai Jue (the god of fire) and Shanggu (the goddess of chaos). But destiny became their enemy when Shanggu had to make the sacrifice to save the world from the Tribulation of Chaos.
The god realm was destroyed and the human realm eventually came to be.
Broken hearted, Bai Jue spent tens of thousands of years collecting what was eft of Shanggu's soul. Eventually, Shanggu was born as Houchi, a goddess disrespected for her weak power (who unknowingly possesses Shanggu's sealed power and memory inside of her).
Now this part is the spoiler. Even if Shanggu is alive as Houchi, the Tribulation of Chaos is still meant to come to pass. Bai Jue, unwilling to see Shanggu die again, painfully endured dividing his original being into two for the purpose of possessing the power of chaos which would let him suffer the Tribulation of Chaos in replacement for Shanggu. One split created Bo Xuan who watched Houchi grow up, staying by her side, guiding and protecting her before disappearing one day. The second split is Qing Mu who fell in love unconditionally and eventually became Houchi's husband.
Qing Mu and Houchi's marriage and union is what led to Houchi's pregnancy. They fought for love even if they knew that their time together was limited. They had both long learned that they possess the true god's spirit inside them, and when the spirit awakens, they would disappear.
It happened that Qing Mu disappeared first, which led to Bai Jue's return. This Bai Jue acted that Qing Mu is no longer a part of him, deliberately hiding his love from Houchi and Yuan Qi. With enemies all around and with his power still weak, he pretended to abandon them, even going as far as to remarry just to give Houchi a push to forget him.
Secretly, he disguises himself to spend time with Yuan Qi, using the form of Feng Ran (Houchi's friend). He also secretly comes to watch over Houchi/Shanggu and Yuan Qi as they sleep. So Yuan Qi had been spending time with him without knowing it's his father who was with him.
All this is because Bai Jue had always intended to sacrifice himself in the Tribulation of Chaos and he knew there was no going back. He did not want Shanggu to experience the thousands of years of pain he had endured for losing his beloved.
So this cute kiddo is Yuan Qi from Ancient Love Poetry. Qi in his name means 'abandonment', a name given by his mother (Houchi who had no memory of Shanggu).
Yuan Qi's character is playful, smart, curious, bold, daring and cunning enough to be manipulative. But he also learns easily and is innocent with a pure heart. He likes to know how magic weapons came to be and likes disassembling them to study how they are built. He looks like his father but has his mother's temper. He has a strong sense of doing what is right, and would bravely apologize and make amends if he knows he's in the wrong. He also doesn't like it when the people around him are sad, so he tries to cheer them up.
He is the only child of true gods, and is considered the other true gods' nephew. He possesses the power of chaos (same as his mother). He is also very much spoiled. 😂💙
Tumblr media
Before he sacrificed himself in the Tribulation of Chaos, Bai Jue finally visited Yuan Qi as himself. Yuan Qi was mad at him for his abandonment but he eventually gave in. They did the things that Yuan Qi loves (like spending time in the human realm, eating good food, gambling, playing with toys, etc). It surprised Yuan Qi how his father knows what he likes and perhaps (just maybe), he also realized then that the Feng Ran who did all those things with him was actually his father in disguise.
Bai Jue also tried to explain to Yuan Qi that death is something that comes to everyone. It is not something horrible, even if it's your own death or the death of someone you love. It's just like flowers blooming and drying. It hurts a lot at first, but the pain lessens with time. He told Yuan Qi that to sacrifice oneself for the ones one loves and for the world is a good thing. Yuan Qi listened to these but he didn't really understand it completely.
When Shanggu learned Bai Jue's true intentions and sacrifice, he was already dead. Shanggu knelt in front of the ancestral god for 500 yrs to plead for Bai Jue's return. At that time, they knew that a new god of fire is to be born and she is desperate to have it be Bai Jue. She was kneeling even when Yuan Qi bid her goodbye because it's been decided that he'd be taken as a disciple in Daze Mountain.
This kid Yuan Qi grew up to be this cute guy from The Last Immortal. They hid his true origin and gave him the name Gu Jin.
The willful spoiled kid grew up to be a righteous but still willful young man. Still innocent and forgiving. Still with a strong moral compass. Still brave and honorable enough to apologize and make up for his wrongdoings. Still caring for all beings in all realms and treats them equally. Still wishes his father had not left them. Kinder, and braver and even more honorable and just. He became exactly the guy that a water divine beast named A Yin would grow to love.
Tumblr media
There is a lot more I want to say. But let's skip it for now.
But I made this post as I couldn't help it. Looking back on Ancient Love Poetry and having read Shen Yin, I finally have a deeper understanding of Yuan Qi and his choices.
In lots of ways, he truly resembles his father.
:)
P.S. Do pm if you want spoilers. I am literally bouncing from restraining myself and internally screaming. I wanna talk about the novel so bad hahahhaha.

Y'all are nuts. I finally caught up to The Last Immortal, and there was never a point when I didn't understand Gu Jin's reasoning, inner turmoil, and pain. The man was cornered in so many ways, along with not knowing the full extent of her injuries. Sooooo much hate on him. He's a bad guy, he wasn't in her corner, he had a character shift, blah blah blah. He really didn't. I fully saw his inner conflict and the battle between Gu Jin and Yuan Qi mindset, along with his devastation and guilt over his sect and how his actions led to their death, and all this time he very clearly loves her and wants to protect her.
I'm glad I read all the hate before watching it. It made me take special attention as I watched, and I just... don't see what you guys saw. 🤷‍♀️

The Last Immortal and its Finale
I wanted for Feng Yin and Yuan Qi's reunion to be a bit longer though!~~ Nonetheless, they still gave us a beautiful ending! I especially love the emphasis on the idea that the decisions that we make are what ultimately shapes our lives. No good thing comes without a sacrifice. They did it countless of times! We shouldn't be bound by some limits because of so-called fate or pre-destiny and that there will always be a way to make breakthroughs if we just have the will to make it.
I also love the journey of Hong Yi and Yan Shuang's love. They have been through a lot and Yan Shuang has endured so much for Hong Yi. At least it was all worth it. Hong Yi loves her so much when he came upfront with his feelings. It was really satisfying for me to witness the journey how they came together.
And, the friendship that the four of them built. It is so wholesome and so realistic. Literally there for each other through thick and thin. With all the bickering/fight and all sort of support they give each other.
Lastly, I appreciate the part where they recognize that there are devils who urge people their darkest emotions to surface and blind us in our actions but that we shouldn't condemn them if they only reflect on their mistakes and be willing to take accountability. To give people the chance to change for the better and not make them suffer even more.
For me the overall story-telling was direct and very relatable in real life!
Much love to everyone in this production!

due to answering the ask I just got, I was reminded again of Gu Long's "On Wuxia" essay, translated here on Wuxia Wanderings which is a really fantastic resource by the way!
More specifically, the passage where Gu Long writes about Jin Yong (both of them tremendous greats in the wuxia genre btw) is just so...kind. There's something so wonderful about the way he talks about how he feels about the genre as well as Jin Yong himself.
I was initially reluctant to talk about contemporary wuxia authors, but I can make an exception for Jin Yong. Because his influence on this generation of wuxia fiction is unmatched, and for the past eighteen years or so, no matter what author you take, all of them have been influenced by him to some degree. He merged together the strengths of each major author and school, and not just from wuxia fiction, but also from classical Chinese literature and modern Western literature. in order to create his own unique style that is succinct, tidy, and lively! His novels are tightly plotted, large in scope, yet the endings match up with the openings, and the characters within are lifelike and vividly portrayed.
[....]
Most importantly, he created the current style of wuxia fiction that almost no one has been able to surmount.
[...]
When I myself first began writing wuxia novels, I was basically just imitating Mr. Jin Yong. Ten years of writing later, when I was writing The Sword and Exquisteness and Legendary Siblings, I was still imitating Mr. Jin Yong. I believe there are many wuxia authors in the same situation as me. On this point, Mr. Jin Yong certainly deserves to feel proud.
I'm not entirely sure I have a meta essay about this, just thinking about the way that like, even someone like Gu Long who was also truly one of the wuxia greats of all time, had such admiration for Jin Yong and his work, and how so much of the time in fandom when I've talked about it people don't know his work really well! They might love MDZS or erha or works that have come after, but we all stand on the shoulders of giants in many ways.
I also remember something a friend commented when we were on the thread on spcnet.tv forums mourning Mr. Jin Yong's passing in 2018, that's really stuck with me and that's the line of "I feel like, in [his] stories, the women are always braver." and maybe that's what I was thinking of when looking up this essay due to the ask I just answered.

Wooooh. Just finished The Last Immortal. :) :) :)
And since it is completed, I am now allowed to give spoilers from the novel Shen Yin or Hidden God by Xing Ling hahahhaa. Gosh, you don't know how much I wanted to fangirl with someone over this hahha!!
Thing is, I love the drama! I love the story and many more things about it.
But dang it, because the novel is even more heartbreaking.
WARNING: NOVEL SPOILERS BELOW. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. (Many things are not included/changed in the drama, so this may seem unfamiliar.)

Disclaimer: Let it be said that it was very, very hard to find good english translations for this novel. I had to endure reading robot and google translation. XD
The points below are spoilers I noted from what I understood of what I have read.
Low and behold...
1) Yuan Qi's sacrifice
🪷A thousand years ago, when Yuan Qi used the spirit sword to punish A Yin, Yuan Qi had already been dead.
See, the power of chaos can bring the immortal souls to life. So when Gu Jin became a god, he used his power to ensure the reborn of everyone they lost on Daze Mountain. He did it at the expense of his own life.
Feng Yin learned this too late.
2) The last battles
🪷Feng Yin joined the contest for the role of heavenly empress. Ajiu disguised himself to join it with her. They were together fighting Hua Shu and Hua Mo.
While this was happening, Yuan Qi was using all he has to seal the purgatory. Bibo was with him, his heart breaking at learning that Yuan Qi only had a body because of the Spirit Sword. All that he was seeing was nothing but a piece of a soul still fighting to save the three realms.
His friend Yuan Qi had long been gone. The power of chaos was no more.
Now, these next parts are from the epilogues.
3) Feng Yin's Dreams
🪷After Yuan Qi's death, Feng Yin keeps dreaming about him. In those dreams, Yuan Qi will tell her, "As long as you're here, I will always be by your side. Believe me, I will never leave you."
4) Ayin's forgotten lifetimes
Did you ever wonder what happened to Ayin in all those lifetimes she had lived in her tribulations?
Remember in the drama how Yuan Qi visited every reborn immortal from Daze Mountain but they couldn't seem to remember him?
🪷 In Shen Yin, that piece of Yuan Qi that clings with A Yin, the very part of him that saved himself in the drama, that piece had been with Ayin in every lifetime in all the tribulations that she had.
In every lifetime that she lived, there was a person who had been a constant, always with her, always looking after her, always trying to save her and failing no matter how hard he tried.
He always looked after her from one lifetime to another. But at every end, he took away her memories of him.
5) Feng Yin goes to the god realm
🪷Feng Yin forced her way into the god realm to plead Gu Jin's parents for help.
But Shang Gu just told her that Yuan Qi is her own flesh and blood. If she could save him, she would have done so already. She told Feng Yin to go back as it wasn't her time to enter the god realm yet.
6) Uncle Devil God
🪷 The devil god appeared before Feng Yin. He said he's there to sight see. Oh, and he also wants to save his eldest nephew, Yuan Qi, who doesn't even look at him.
Feng Yin had no qualms believing the devil god if he says he can really save Yuan Qi. It made the devil god very amused.
The devil god was kind enough to reveal the fact that long ago, when Feng Yin's souls were scattered into the world, Yuan Qi took a piece of his soul for her. And this soul has been with her all along. The power of chaos had been with her affecting her karma in every reincarnation. Yuan Qi's soul and Feng Yin's soul were intertwined. So if she lives, then he would not die.
When Feng Yin asked him why he's telling her all these, the devil god answered that many years ago, a man told him that a devil is a devil and will never be recognized by all spirit and is meant to temper the spirits. He believed all these and so he played his role. But Feng Yin showed him that fate can be changed, and so he wants to give it a try.
Feng Yin used that piece to revive Yuan Qi.
7) Scheming true god in-laws
🪷Meanwhile, in the god realm, Bai Jue is asking Sang gu why she didn't just tell Feng Yin that Yuan Qi could be saved when she came for them.
Shang Gu replied that the son (P.S. she actually calls Yuan Qi 'bastard' lol) is just like his father. He lives as he says and dies at he says. She also wanted to teach her daughter-in-law (aka Feng Yin).
They could not help teasing each other, as always. It was cute haha.
8) Yuan Qi and Feng Yin's married life
🪷In the novel, they had a daughter and Yuan Qi calls her princess. They banter about who she takes after, and Feng Yin asks him who is more important, her or their daughter? XD
When said daughter goes missing, the hint is for them to look where there are handsome immortals. Hahhahaa.
She totally took after them.

Who is Mu-Deok?
Crown Prince Go Won: Filthy Mu-Deok? A stinky, insolent peasant, always causing trouble! But only I am allowed to say that. I’ll execute anyone who harms her.
Jin Cho-Yeon: Jang Uk’s maid. There’s something weird going on with her, and she always manages to cause problems. For me specifically.
Seo Yul: the soul of my childhood sweetheart and a dangerous assassin, inhabiting the body of an innocent girl. She is a monster but not the way people think. It will break my heart to kill her.
Park Dang-Gu: Uk’s maid! We all think she’s great! There seems to be a lot of trouble around her which is such a shame bc she’s lovely!
Jang Uk: my master, my servant. My love, my killer. My best friend, my torturer. The only one who knows me. Truly the other half of my soul. She would break any rule to be with me, and I would bend the laws of the universe for her. My wife, my obsession. My protector and my delicate bird egg to protect. No she doesn’t like me back.
Naksu: idk man I just live here
