This scene with Wen remnants is fascinating. Firstly, Wei Ying refused to fight Lan Zhan. He offered his life on a silver platter. Even if it became physical, Wei Ying probably would've fought back to protect himself (or others, more likely) and not attack. Secondly, you can see several reasons for Lan Zhan to step back and let Wei Ying go. He won't hurt Wei Ying unless he doesn't have a choice, and even in this scenario, he'll try to find another way to resolve the problem. At this moment, Lan Zhan didn't understand the reason behind Wei Ying's actions, but he trusted the other's moral compass enough to not interfere. But also, some part of Lan Zhan knew that what Wei Ying did was right, and he should've done the same. Unfortunately, as we previously established, Lan Zhan is still learning to feel and decipher his emotions. He hasn't reached the point when he can express himself yet. Plus, after what happened with his mother, he has a trauma concerning going against his Clan's rules.

Something about xue yang growing up in the streets abused by nobles. While wei wuxian also survived in the streets by running away from dogs. Meng yao, xue yang and wei wuxian all of them looked down upon by the cultivation world simply for their origin of birth. Yet these nobody orphans and bastards managed to cause such long lasting damage to the same clans that their names have been permanently recorded in the pages of history.

during my first 'the untamed' watch and my first read of mdzs, i really disliked jiang cheng's character. back then, i didn't bother to think too much on why i didn't like him. just that his constant anger was annoying and seemed, to me, a sign that he gave no regard to other people's feelings.

a handful of years passed and now i have so much love for his character. it's easy to see why it took such a long time for jiang cheng to grow on me. angry people make me uncomfortable, because anger is an emotion i learned to associate with all things negative and i am still learning to have a healthier relationship with it.

that's why jiang cheng, nowadays, is so fascinating to me. he experiences and expresses his emotions through anger. he uses it as a filter, although it doesn't work as well as he probably wishes it did. it's the emotion he is most comfortable with as well as the emotion that he deems protects him from other people trying to perceive those soft parts of his insides that he's learned to see as weakness. jiang cheng's anger is a defence mechanism, which is really not uncommon at all. because of how he was raised and what he has been through, it's just always on the surface.

his anger is rarely, if ever, just anger. there's something more to it that needs patience and an understanding of his heart to analyze.

i'm hoping to reread mdzs this year and i'm also slowly rewatching the show. i'll definitely have more thoughts on him as i'm reminded of more of the cause and effect in the story. who knows, maybe i'll be inspired to write a full character analysis on him and that anger he uses like a guard dog on a loose leash.

Anyway, does anybody else think that instead of Wei Wuxian just being a bit of a dick to Wen Yuan when he incentivised him with the idea of toys and not getting them, he was actually giving Lan Wangji a chance to not appear so scary to the boy? Like, Wen Yuan was terrified of the stern and cold Lan Wangji, and Wei Wuxian could have noticed this and decided to create a situation where Lan Wangji looked like the good guy. And so, he asks Wen Yuan - out of nowhere - about some toys, then proceeds not to buy them, leaving Lan Wangji feeling sorry for Wen Yuan and taking initiative to ask the kid which toys he wanted. Of course, you could completely disregard it, but I think it's quite sweet, because Lan Wangji seemed quite distressed at Wen Yuan's tears, so Wei Wuxian decided to fix it.

Can we talk about the fact that wwx basically did the same thing lan zhan did for him. Like when wwx was whipped with Zidian for offending the wen clan By saving lan zhan at the cave. Then kan zhan was whipped for saving him at the burial mounds. I would really like it if the juniors ever found out that lan zhan and wwx were basically punished by their own clan for saving the person they love. Also, lan xichen u need to know this too. Lan zhan ain't the only one who endangered their clan for wwx . Wwx also bought unnecessary attention to jiang clan by saving ur brother.
