Smile (film)

Smile (2022, dir. Parker Finn) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Smile almost had me. I wanna say all the way up until the final moments of the movie I was on board. It seemed to be a very effective horror movie highlighting the struggles of people who have been through trauma, and how childhood trauma stays with you and can eat you up inside. However, without giving too much away, in the last five minutes of the film the messaging seems to shift. What seemed like a very moving commentary about learning to face your trauma and your anxieties head on turned into a gimmicky, trope-y, frankly sickening ending that would make anyone who actually suffers from what the central character does, or just anyone who empathizes with her for that matter, feel incredibly alienated and othered. I'm not sure if Finn meant to send this incredibly awful message, I've seen at least one reviewer who interpreted the film as very surface level, so maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but it just didn't sit right with me, and the longer I sit on it the more angry I seem to be getting about it.
It's tough, because, as I said, for most of the film I was on board. The acting by Sosie Bacon, Kyle Gallner, and (although her screen time was very limited) Caitlin Stasey is very good, the scares are mostly effective, and the cinematography, while maybe a little flashier than needed, is unique and interesting. I will say that there are quite a few artificial jump scares here, moments that rely very heavily on a sound effect added in post to provide the scare, instead of letting the tension of the scene and something genuinely happening in frame create the "jump" instead (the film also has quite a few of these, so I guess they cancel each other out), and after awhile those artificial jumps grow tiresome. The film really shines in its opening sequence, where Stasey steals the entire spotlight. I hate to say it, but it is the best part of the entire movie. I don't want to give this a good score, because I really do hate what it seems to be saying, but I also can't ignore the parts that were well done. I wanted this to be good, I wanted to like it, but I just really, really don't. If you want my honest opinion, if you want to watch this, and you haven't seen The Babadook, just watch that instead. It's scarier, it deals with a lot of the same themes as this movie does in a much more tasteful way, and it's just a much, much better film about a very similar topic.
Score: 5/10
Currently streaming on Paramount+.
If you're at all neurodivergent, I would maybe advise against seeing this.

Movies watched in 2022
Smile (2022, USA)
Director & Writer: Parker Finn
Mini-review:
As a big horror fan, I was really looking forward to this movie, considering all the buzz that surrounded its release. It's no masterpiece, but it certainly is a fun experience that doesn't have a single boring moment. To me, the most terrifying parts were when no one would believe the main character. Sosie Bacon did a fantastic job with this role and her performance really helps the audience put themselves in the character's shoes. Also, I felt the movie's themes were really well handled, although we've seen them in many other, better films that treat them with more subtlety, like It Follows and The Babadook. So yeah, this was overall a fun horror movie with great acting and solid themes, and I guess it's better than the average mainstream studio horror movie. I'll be keeping an eye on Parker Finn's future work.

"Smile"
A satisfying genre film that's well done and scary as hell, even if the evil curse story line has been done many times before.
All around, “Smile” is better than you’d ever expect. Relying on a tried-and-true evil curse formula, writer / director Parker Finn puts an extra-creepy spin on his story by adding a simple physical attribute – smiling – that is used to create a bone-chilling effect. This is the perfect scary movie to kick off Halloween season, and it’s one that should appeal to a wide variety of audiences who…

Smile (18): The horror of destroying some simply smashing wine tumblers.
#onemannsmovies review of "Smile" (2022). #SmileMovie. Creepy but unoriginal horror with a cracking job done by Sosie Bacon. 3.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Smile” (2022). I remember that one of the early horror films I saw with an “18” certificate (or actually “X” certificate in those days, just before it changed) was a rather unpleasantly ‘rapey’ film called “The Entity” in 1982. Barbara Hershey was a woman stalked by a malicious invisible being. Since then I have seen no end of “possession” films, and “Smile” is the…
