Fiat Panda Destriero, 1992, by Stola. A first generation Italdesign Panda redesigned by Aldo Garnero and converted by Carrozzera Stola into a Spiaggetta (beach car). The name derived from the Destriero speedboat project (pictured with the car), an attempt to cross the Atlantic in record time. Originally presented by Stola in 1991 as the "Mirage" the name was changed after Fiat adopted Stola's prototype. The Destriero entered limited production, all cars being finished in Teal with marine-grade interior trim except for one that was built for Fiat CEO Gianni Agnelli and finished in “Agnelli Blue” (pictured).

Lancia Delta S4 Stradale
This 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale was once owned by none other than Gianni Agnelli in 1990 in his family colours. This true unicorn machine is something that is likely to truly take your breath away, and with the high-revving, rear-mounted engine screaming away just behind your ears, there’s plenty to love about this Group-B monster with number plates.

“It’s been five years since we tracked it down in a US storage facility. Four years since restoration began. Finally this week we unveiled the finished car in the home town of its first owner. It was the most challenging rebuild we’ve undertaken as no conventional build records exist: the Ferrari 365P ‘Tre Posti’ was a prototype built for Gianni Agnelli and never intended for production (although US Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti subsequently ordered a second, slightly different ‘Bianco Gardenia’ example). You can immediately tell Agnelli’s car apart by its polished rear spoiler (“It weaved all over the autostrada at top speed without it” recalled Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fiovanti), the outside racing style fuel filler (“Agnelli loved details like that”) and of course L’Avvocato’s personal colours, including a light grey cloth interior which was woven near Biella to reproduce remains of the original found behind the door panels. The best detail of all, though, has to be Agnelli’s registration number, even more remarkable in a country where private plates aren’t supposed to exist. If anyone doubted who was the most influential person in Italy in 1966, the year he inherited control of Fiat and 4.4% of the country’s GDP, this probably gives a clue…“You could barely stop before you were surrounded by people” recalled Agnelli. Does anyone think we should try to recreate that on film in 2023?” @kidstonmotorcars on Facebook

Maserati 5000 GT Frua
Each of the 34 examples of the Maserati 5000 GT is a storybook in its own right. The first of these exotic beasts was commissioned by the Shah of Persia (now Iran), who pined for a 450S (nine made, terminated when Maserati left racing). The road-going 3500 GT was too common to satisfy his highness but held promise if properly modified. The Shah paid Maserati to strengthen the chassis and suspension of a 3500 to accept a 4.9 liter V8 derived from the 450S. The body was built by Carrozzeria Touring, the car was painted dark blue, and the final result was shipped to the Shah. A second car was sent to South African millionaire Basil Read. Once the Shah purchased his car, other royals clamored for their own copies. Maserati increased the 5000’s engine displacement slightly, added fuel injection, and upgraded to a five-speed ZF transmission, sending several more cars to various coachbuilders (eight in all) at the behest of their celebrity buyers. These included Karim Aga Khan, Briggs Cunningham, and Gianni Agnelli. Here at Kidston is the first of three Frua-bodied Maserati 5000 GTs, a 1962 example. Initially painted gold, and swanned around to shows in Geneva, Paris, and Italy by the factory, it was finally repainted a deep metallic red in 1963, assigned a fresh chassis number, and sold as a new car.
Eventually, this example was given to King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud during his exile in Egypt – a gift from his son. King Saud was exiled from his exile (to Athens this time), and the car was impounded by the Egyptian government for decades. Sold a few times around the year 2000, the car was refurbished during a four-year period and shown in its original gold livery. Its most recent owner, preferring the ruby shade of its former life, had it repainted yet again, enjoyed it for ten years.
