Before All That Remains, I have so many feelings about Leandra spoiling the absolute heck out of Anders when he moves into the estate. You can bet your ass she got a family portrait commissioned of him, her, Garrett, Gamlen, & Carver (when he manages a visit from the Wardens) that hangs up proudly in the estate. The others gripe and complain about how long it's taking. Meanwhile, Anders is beaming the whole time because he's just happy to belong and be a part of something. He doesn't put up a fuss like the others when Leandra stops to fix everyone's hair and straighten up their clothes, and he's damn near trembling with delight when Leandra insists on him and Garrett getting a couple's portrait of their own. Of course, Leandra lets them have free rein over that one, posing as ridiculous or as serious as they'd like to. It doesn't matter, though. Garrett's and Anders' love for each other is obvious with every look and touch.

Dragon Age Thoughts: Gamlen is a good guy

He is an unpleasant guy, but a good guy nonetheless. He’s one of those actions speak louder than words characters for me.

Some of this is from the WOT vol 2 so it is missed in game:

He was the one to help Leandra and Malcolm meet in secret before they ran away. He was largely ignored and not trained or expected to do anything as Leandra was the assumed heir.   I’m assuming they were late teens when Leandra left so this kid suddenly has all this responsibly thrust on him out of the blue and is completely unprepared for it.  It’s talked about in game that he is always falling for schemes. He’s inept because he wasn’t trained for the position like Leandra was and he has a gambling addiction but addiction doesn’t make you a bad person. (Also, the man with the gambling addiction is named Gamlen? Really writers? Really?)

He does the best he can, looks after his parents as best he can which is a thankless task for him. He gets so burnt out in those years the woman he loves leaves him.

Then when the sister he has every reason to be angry with needs help he sticks his neck out for her. He goes to dangerous people he owes money to for help and I definitely think there was a big cost to him in addition to the year of servitude for the Hawke kids. He opens his home, such as it, to them without cost. Only after a year does he even ask his sister to help out.

Gamlen is understandably unpleasant and often inept or foolish, but still very good guy because of his choices.

Also, to all the unappreciated caregivers out there- you are awesome. If you get cranky and bitter sometimes, you are only human and still awesome.
