Brittany/Bretagne/Briezh - partie trois
It is October 7 and we have been home 5 full days. I am back on Michigan time but due to my new "job" (watching Freya on Tuesdays and Fridays) there has been little time to sit and write. It doesn't mean I haven't been having a blast explaining about PSI and gravity and how a pump works. I have such a receptive student...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mark has also had different duties - and the cornbread taste test went very well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But back to our trip...
September 27, 2023
Gabby and Danielle left to return to their home about an hour away after breakfast this morning. Sometime during our often broken conversations in Franglish, we discovered that Gabby and Danielle are sailors and have a Beneteau 48 ft sailboat. That gave Gabby and Mark plenty to try to talk about. (Gabby's English is so much better than Mark's French - but they did communicate without too much trouble. Gabby and Danielle are a delightful couple and we look forward to seeing them next year in California.
The day was overcast and threatening rain - but full speed ahead. Francoise suggested we take a road trip to see Côte de Granite Rose (The Pink Granite Coast) about an hour away. She had other things to show us on the route too. So off we went.
Tumblr media
Carl was driving, Mark was in the front seat and Annie, Francoise and I were in the back seat - BUT the only person who knew where we were going was the only non-native English speaker. One would like that everyone would just listen carefully to Francoise - but NOPE! Everyone - including the car GPS - had a plan. But Francoise pushed forward and got us to everywhere she had planned. (Damned pushy, pig-headed Americans!!).
Tumblr media
And what a treat for us! We stopped for some lovely views along the way and then we arrived. The coast is indeed Pink Granite! Francoise was disappointed that it was overcast because the sunshine makes the place much pinker to the eye - but we loved it clouds and all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could not help but see the resemblance to the Canadian North Channel where Mark and I spent 15 magnificent summers on our sailboat.
Below are a couple of pics from the North Channel...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is as if these locations so far away shared the same planet - or something. Beauty abounds.
The weather threatened rain - but it held off until we were having a lovely lunch by the harbor. After a lovely lunch Francoise had another trick up her sleeve - a trip to a sleepy village named Tréguier established during the 6th century and somehow escaped destruction during WWII. It was delightful.
Tumblr media
But then, we turned the corner and saw this:
Tumblr media
WHAT!?!? A massive cathedral in this tiny town!?!?!?
The history of this still active Catholic Cathedral - this not really a cathedral - is fascinating. A "Cathedral" is the church of a bishop and this place hasn't had a bishop since 1802, however the church is still referred to as Tréguier Cathedral or Saint Yves' Cathedral.
I'm lifting this right off the WWW. "It was in the 6th century that Anglo-Saxon invasions caused Saint Tugdual to leave Wales and settle in Brittany. Tugdual had been a pupil at the monastery of Llanwit Major founded by Saint Iltud, but now, with his mother and several fellow monks, he braved the seas and settled in Brittany at a point where the rivers Guidy, Jaudy and their estuary joined and eventually and in around 532, founded a monastery there which he called "Landreguer" ("the monastery of three rivers") and around this monastery and the village of Minihy grew what was to eventually be the town of Tréguier."
From that monastery grew a church - made of wood. After Tugdual was made a saint and was buried there and a few hundred later it was decided that this place needed something a LOT better than a wooden church -- so in 970 a new cathedral was built in the Romanesque style. Only a little bit of it remains - look at the tower in the center of the picture below. If the windows have a round top - Romanesque. If the windows are arched - Gothic. Cool huh?
Tumblr media
In 1339 - the construction of the Gothic cathedral began to replace the completely old fashioned and way too small Romanesque building. Why had it become too small? St. Yves. In 1252, the soon to be Saint Yves, a native son of Brittany was born. He proved to be a brilliant student, a pious, kind and generous man and from the website Catholic Saints: "During a famine God almighty came to the assistance of his generosity by visible miracles. A flour bin which a domestic had found empty was found filled when Yves himself went with the domestic to examine it. Once he fed two hundred hungry persons with seven loaves of bread; at another time he fed twenty-four persons with a small loaf." TA-DA!!! Upon his death in 1303 he was buried next to Saint Tugdual. And at that point this church became a pilgrimage destination.
Anyway, what we see today is what happened from 1339 to the 1700s as the cathedral grew. It is quite impressive inside and out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved the cloisters.
Tumblr media
We walked around this quaint little village and then headed back to Loguivy de la Mer.
Tumblr media
There were naps and downtime and then our darling hostess, Francois took her position back in the kitchen meeting all our needs before we even knew we had them. What a sweetheart! Nos chérie!
Tumblr media
Carl has developed a cough and feels a bit rundown, so tomorrow he will rest while the we go to Île de Bréhat for the day. Our time here is quickly drawing to a close and I will truly be sad to leave. This part of the world is just extraordinary and let me say again - we have been treated like royalty by our wonderful hosts.
We finished the night with a card game with Francoise by my side learning. Tomorrow night she will sub in. Fun in Brittany/Bretagne/Breizh!!
Stay tuned.

Boris Johnson under pressure over Islamophobia as he orders inquiry into MP’s sacking #ٹاپسٹوریز

Boris Johnson under pressure over Islamophobia as he orders inquiry into MP’s sacking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boris Johnson is coming under growing pressure over alleged Islamophobia within his government, after submitting to demands for an inquiry into a minister’s claim she was sacked because of her “Muslimness”.
The Muslim Council of Britain questioned the independence of the internal inquiry ordered by the PM, which will be conducted by civil servants rather than the Equality and Human Rights Commission, while Labour called for the investigation to be handed over to No 10 ethics adviser Lord Geidt.
Mr Johnson faced demands to give evidence to the inquiry to explain why he did not order an investigation when Tory MP Nusrat Ghani first approached him in 2020 to complain she had been discriminated against.
Meanwhile, an imam appointed to lead an official process to draw up a definition of Islamophobia told The Independent that he had received no “meaningful engagement” from ministers in years.
Qari Asim said that, after being commissioned in 2019, the work “didn’t really start” and letters to ministers went unanswered. Ministers are to be grilled on his complaints in the House of Commons on Tuesday.
The EHRC said it would consider the findings of the Ghani inquiry in the context of the action plan drawn up following the 2021 Singh inquiry into discrimination within the Conservative Party, and did not rule out the use of legal powers if it feels that progress is too slow.
Ms Ghani said on Sunday that when she lost her job as a transport minister in a 2020 reshuffle, she was told her “Muslim woman minister status was making colleagues feel uncomfortable”.
Chief whip Mark Spencer later identified himself as the person accused of making the remarks, but said: “These accusations are completely false and I consider them to be defamatory.”

Ms Ghani – who was the first female Muslim minister in the House of Commons – welcomed the announcement of the inquiry, which is to be conducted by the Cabinet Office’s propriety and ethics team.
But there was an immediate row over the terms of reference to be followed by investigators. The chair of the Commons Women and Equalities Committee told The Independent that the wording was “key”, while Ms Ghani said it was vital for them to include “all that was said in Downing Street and by the whip”.
But the Cabinet Office said that the investigation was being carried out under the general provisions of Section 1.4 of the ministerial code of conduct, which allows the PM to ask the department “to investigate the facts of the case” in any alleged breach, and that there were no specific terms of reference.
The Muslim Council of Britain said it wanted to see terms imposed along the lines demanded by Ms Ghani, and questioned the independence of an internal inquiry.
“This investigation is well overdue,” said a spokesperson. “Nevertheless, what we really need now is a truly independent inquiry with definitive terms of reference, run by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.”
The head of the Conservative Muslim Forum, Lord Sheikh, said there was no reason why Mr Johnson could not immediately clear up whether Ms Ghani’s dismissal was due to “her incompetence” or “other reasons”.
Lord Sheikh told BBC Radio 4: “The report must be made public in full. I don’t want a scenario where bits of the report are truncated. And if any anyone is found to have behaved badly, that person must be held to account.”
No 10 has refused to commit to publishing the inquiry’s findings and has rebuffed Labour calls for Mr Spencer to be investigated under the ministerial code.
Quizzed on a hospital visit, Mr Johnson declined to back Mr Spencer, saying he was “very glad” there was an inquiry under way but adding: “We must wait and see what the investigation produces.”
No 10 distanced itself from comments from Tory MP Michael Fabricant, who dismissed Ms Ghani’s complaint as “lame” because “she’s hardly someone who’s obviously a Muslim”.
Mr Johnson’s spokesperson said: “The PM would not agree that someone’s religion would determine their appearance.”
Women and Equalities Committee chair and Tory MP Caroline Nokes told The Independent: “I am pleased the PM is taking this seriously and has listened to those supporting Nus’s request for an independent inquiry. Obviously the terms of reference are key, but I welcome this as a positive step.”
And Tory peer Sayeeda Warsi – the Conservatives’ first Muslim minister – said it was important that the inquiry sends out a message to British Muslims that “you are welcome within this party and you will play your full part and your Muslimness will not make a difference”.
But Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesperson Layla Moran said Mr Johnson had ignored Ms Ghani’s demand for an inquiry two years ago, and was only acting now because the issue had surfaced in the media.
“We now need assurances that this inquiry will question Boris Johnson himself, and find out why no action was taken when these extremely serious allegations were first made,” said Ms Moran. “This is a case of potentially illegal discrimination at the very heart of the government. It is shameful that it seems to have been simply swept under the carpet.”
And Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner wrote to Lord Geidt, urging him to ask the prime minister to commission a formal investigation into a possible breach of the ministerial code by Mr Spencer.
“A full investigation on this is absolutely necessary for anyone to feel that our democracy is safe from racism and discrimination, and not least for the millions of Muslim people in Britain who need confidence that our politics is not harbouring Islamophobia,” said Ms Rayner.
An EHRC spokesperson said: “Discrimination is unacceptable in all workplaces, whether in the private sector or in government. Allegations of discrimination should be treated seriously by employers, and we welcome the announcement that the Cabinet Office are doing so.
“We will consider any findings from the Cabinet Office inquiry. If we are not satisfied with progress, we will not rule out the use of our legal powers.”

Why final trim matters
Tumblr media
Grader Hire Sunshine Coast
For someone who is physically fit, responsible, well coordinated, able to drive defensively, strategically and safely, can and will follow instructions, and enjoys both practical and manual work, there are plenty of good, challenging, well-paid, trust-based outdoor job opportunities in mining, infrastructure, civil construction, heavy industry, agriculture and energy throughout Australia.
Strong hand and eye coordination
Trimming slopes or creating straight, flat sections of earth with a large grader needs a very keen eye, technical expertise and lots of patience. And understanding properly how different materials move is essential. GPS control systems must be used to determine accurately and efficiently whether cut or fill is needed, and a final trim grader has to be able to operate a grader successfully to tight tolerances to get a Certificate of Competency for Grader Operations.
All Across Earthworx Pty Ltd has established a great reputation for the best final trim and grader hire on the Sunshine Coast
All Across EarthworxPty Ltd has the best and most effective final trim team, every member of which thoroughly understands plant ability and limitations, as well as cooperative relationships, and delivers maximum value and impact. It’s really an outstanding talent as well as an expertise, and so are their communication skills, and sense and understanding of negotiation and conflict resolution. Of course this also means fewer breakdowns, a crew of operators who actually enjoy their jobs and, ultimately, clients who are happy to engage All Across Earthworx Pty Ltd time and time again to build and then maintain their roads, to level parcels of ground for further construction, and to create dirt pathways and staging areas to park for other equipment and machinery used on a construction site — dedicated and committed operatives who can be depended upon to work safely on busy construction and building sites with millimetre accuracy and productivity.
All Across Earthworx Pty Ltd is committed to quality
If you are looking for a highly reliable earthmoving equipment hire and construction company with an enviable track record, which delivers value, time and quality, All Across Earthworx Pty Ltd is prepared to tackle any project large or small.     Mary Queen of Scots had a colourful life acceding to the Scottish throne at only 6 days old; however, she spent most of her childhood living in France whilst regents ruled Scotland on her behalf. At 15 she married the dauphin who eventually became King of France which meant she briefly became Queen of France until a year later when he went feet-up and she returned to Scotland. The moral here is “make hay whilst the sun shines as tomorrow you may die”.
Four years later and she married her cousin Lord Darnley.  Fickle buggers these royals!
At this point you might think, ‘what the hell is he rambling on about?’, well please bear with me.
They produced a son, James then a year later the house was destroyed in an explosion and Darnley was found murdered in the garden and James Hepburn, 4th Early of Bothwell was believed to be implicated but acquitted at trial.
…keep bearing with me…
A month after the acquittal Mary and the Earl got married and the Scottish folks took umbrage, threw a tantrum, binned them both, locked Mary up and forced her to abdicate in favour of her one-year-old son James. The moral here is don’t act too quick even in love and especially after a murder.
Now keep an eye on James, he’s only a baby but you never know what life will throw at you.
Mary makes a break into the northern counties but Elizabeth I of England is a bit twitchy about her motives as Mary had previously made a bid for the English throne and there was a significant number of English Catholics that supported the idea so – long story short – Liz locked her up for 18 years. In fairness, her incarceration was in luxury because she was of royal stock but Liz moved her about to ensure there was no chance of a build-up of allegiance and any consequent threat to the English throne.
One of the places that she was purported to have spent her time was Bolton Castle where she managed to contrive an escape into the woods near Leyburn. They let the dogs out and chased her of course and she made a tremendous attempt to lose them by running and hiding in the thick woods around the castle but eventually, she lost her shawl in the prickly gorse and it was this that gave her away. She was eventually moved to Fotheringay Castle where she was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death by beheading.
These days the executioner would have been subject to a personal improvement plan and ordered to undergo retraining as the reports were thus.
The first blow only cut into her head, the second blow cut through some of her neck but a third piece of sawing action was necessary to complete the separation. There are two morals here:
1. ‘don’t upset the monarch’ and
2. if you’re going to have your head cut off then offer the guy with the axe a big tip for a clean strike.
Baby James was destined for greater things and became King James I of England and VI of Scotland unifying the two countries but the two bits of his mum would never know this.
Now what the devil has this got to do with walking near Leyburn you may ask? Well the ridge that we would be walking is called Leyburn Shawl and legend has it that Mary’s break for freedom and loss of shawl is the reason for said name.
Of course there is a counter-claim that shaw’el means ‘woodland on a hill’ and this is the reason for the name but I prefer the former.
I have a starting point at York and TP Express cancel my train so the irony is that I may miss the walk due to a failure on the national network causing me to miss the Wensleydale Railway connection from Leeming to Redmire; however, a passing LNER train to Edinburgh saves the day although my ticket doesn’t technically cover me for travel on their enhanced rolling stock. Like before, I’m keeping my head low with my story of canceled train at the ready but it’s not necessary and within 20 minutes I’m on Northallerton station and heading for my car to head for Leeming and the excellent Wensleydale Railway service to Redmire.
It was closed to passengers in 1954, three years after my birth but kept open to haul stone and keep heavy lorries off the tiny roads through the dale. It also has a strategic aim in as much as heavy military machines can be transported quickly and efficiently from Catterick should the need arise.
The car park at Leeming is nearly full and I’m lucky enough to get one of the last spaces but there is ample space on the road if you take advantage of this service.
There is the smell of coal and steam that immediately reminds me of my childhood near the main East Coast Line linking Edinburgh to London. We lived in an end terrace house that had quite a long garden that ran adjacent to the embankment carrying the tracks. The edge of the garden and the embankment was denoted by a wooden fence and we would put milk bottle on the posts. We found that the firemen in the huge steam trains that thundered up and down the main line from Edinburgh to London and back would throw coal at them as they passed. They rarely hit one but the harvest of coal that we would find in the garden was well worth it.
As I walk on to the platform I see the culprit, it’s a J27 although I don’t know that yet, I have to Google it but what I see makes fascinating reading. This is a fabulous machine first designed in the early 1900’s the first batch being produced in 1906. The one that I’m looking at was actually built in 1923 and weighs 86 tons, it had a brush with death in the mid 60’s when it was sent to Tyne Doc for dismantling and breaking. In 1967 it was bought by a dedicated group of enthusiasts and beautifully restored then bought by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and maintained by them still. It’s currently on loan for us to enjoy and it’s worth spending some time here or at any point along this fabulous railway to see the spectacle of a ‘steamer’ in full flow in this glorious dale.
Please remember though that this is not a commercial organisation, it needs our cash to sustain it so, when possible, please use it or give generously to any of the appeals, it really is worthwhile.
The ‘boys’, I use the term with affection (average age is now 70) but our heads are 17, are waving enthusiastically from the buffet car, it’s Yorkshire Day and we’ll be celebrating with a cup of Yorkshire tea on the way to Leyburn.
Ensconced now in the standard livery seats we’re in full flow, it’s astonishing the noise that a group of enthusiastic ‘mature’ gentlemen can make but we’re tolerated for the wit.
Young Michael is looking after us and he’s out on the platform ensuring there are no stragglers as the doors are closed then with a loud and meaningful whistle he jumps on-board, closes that last door and we’re ready to go.
I’ll not describe every aspect of the rail journey save to say we’re well looked after by the team. Michael, the ticket inspector, and guard; Nigel, the train manager; Niall and Keeley, both on day release from ‘proper jobs’ and manning the buffet car with smiles and enthusiasm; Vince is the driver today and his expertise ensures a safe and smooth journey to Redmire. Thank you to all of you, you’re a credit to the Wensleydale Railway and I urge readers to take a trip up to Leyburn or beyond just for a day out. It’s about an hour and the scenery is wonderful.
We alight at Redmire and although being able to pee standing behind a bush is an advantage of being a man we call in at the portaloo just to check it’s clean!
The first part of the walk is ‘up’. It’s better that way. We do occasional walks where the ‘up’ but is at the end and they’re a bit waring. So we’re looking for a lane that heads off the main road towards Redmire Scar but we find that much of the area has been fenced with “Do not Enter” signs indicating the queries as no-go areas. There has been a new footpath established but we’ll only know that when we reach to the top as the signage doesn’t start until you’ve actually arrived at the footpath (not helpful); however, we have GPS and a paper OS map so follow the track as designated and risk the wrath of the man with a clipboard if it happens (it doesn’t).
As we reach the top of Redmire Scar the full extent of beautiful Wensleydale becomes clear, it’s fabulous at any time but even better today in the sunshine.
  Taken with ViewRanger Skyline – Compass Heading : 13°, Version : 8.6.2(432), Field of View : 59.0, Device : iPhone9,4(11.4.1)
We manage to find a style next to a sign indicating that we should not enter; however, there is little option so we scramble our way up the scree and emerge at a point that we recognise from last time. It turns out that this path has been closed and rerouted around the other side of the quarry but we’re on top of it now and only a couple of hundred metres from being ‘legal’.
To our North there is a column. None of us have any idea what it is and it’s too far away to walk to it to find out so if anyone could throw any light on this mysterious column in the middle of the Preston Moor or thereabouts I’d appreciate it.
We stop for lunch and the steam train whistles its intention to pull the train out of Redmire back towards Leyburn and we strain our eyes trying to identify it in the row of trees that camouflage the line especially in the cuts. We do get a few sightings and they’re fabulous but at 1000 feet (300m) plus the linear distance it makes it impossible to get good photos without a long lens.
Another 200 yards (190m) we turn down towards Preston-Under-Scar ensuring that, on this occasion, we walk to the left of the fence and avoid the bollocking that Pete got from the farmer last time we were here.
The name Preston-Under-Scar is said to be derived from “Priests Farm Under Rock (or Cliff)” and seems entirely appropriate when the ecclesiastical activities in these parts especially in the early years are considered,
Later, there was significant lead processing conducted here and there is still evidence and buildings in Condenser Wood nearby. It is said that the processing of the lead and the low chimneys meant the fumes would cling to the valley and not disperse; because of this they built a flue that extended over 2 miles (3km) and fed into a chimney at Cobscar Mill over 1200 feet (380m) above Preston-under-Scar.
We leave the village along the tarmac road and within a couple of hundred yards bear left onto the public footpath across the field and into the woods where we cross a number of streams (or it could have been the same stream several times) over simple plank bridges. This part of the walk is pleasantly cool and we take advantage of the new atmosphere by slowing down and enjoying the birdsong and odd rabbit in the glades.
As we leave the wood the track bears left then cuts across two fields well out in the open then goes up and the incline increases steadily as we travers the open ground. At the top we’re out of breath and stop. We can see the rolling expanse of Wensleydale including Penhill, the views are astonishing.
For the next half mile or so we only get the occasional teasing glimpse of the dale. We’re on the Leyburn Shawl and there is a sporadic bench seat dedicated to some local who enjoyed the walk with the odd one highly decorated or carved.
The walking is easy along here and the next mile and half is goes very quickly and before we know it Leyburn is upon us and a place to eat is the only decision left.
We’ve eaten at various establishments in Leyburn and always been well looked after so the ‘all day breakfast’ that two of our midst indulged in were unsurprisingly excellent and we manage to while away an hour before the return leg on the Wensleydale Railway but do leave yourself plenty of time (20 minutes) to walk from town to the station, it’s a goodly walk along the Bedale road.
With regard to the Wensleydale Railway, please support it, use it or volunteer for it, it’s an excellent resource and the track goes through exquisite countryside.
This walk is 7 miles long and includes one or two steep climbs but well worth the effort.
Thank you to George Renwick, Peter Hymer, George Preston, Dave Rider and the staff of the Wensleydale Railway.
Feel free to ‘share or’ or ‘like’, some folks that can’t get around anymore enjoy an armchair day out and that’s nice.
  Enjoy the snaps…G..x

Sharon’s Funtime Prescription
Captain Richard was performing, not working, but expertly executing his trade before our very eyes. I’ve seen a great artist, talented musicians, and skilled workman, but we’d not imagined what we were in store for today when we left the dock at Port Canaveral in the early morning dawn.
“Where are we going?” I asked like an excited child as soon as we idled toward the mouth of the port. “I’m gonna scout for some live bait down the beach, it’s a little distance to where they’ve been, but getting good live bait is worth the effort and time” replied Captain Richard.
Within minutes we were cruising down the shoreline with the salty morning breeze brushing our faces and our Captain keeping a keen eye out for signs of bait. It wasn’t long until he’d found what he was looking for and his sharp eyes and accomplished cast net skills captured hundreds of perfect live “pilchards” (as he’d call them) in one swift swing of the massive net. Bingo! In less than a minute an encompassing net throw, a brisk shake, the generous sized live well was black with live pilchards. He took a few minutes to tidy up the boat and baitwell while taking time to show us what we’d be using this morning.
“This is going to be our ammunition today,” said the Captain, as he punched some buttons on his GPS and made his course away from the beach.” We’ll be needing most of these for chum and a few select ones for fishing.”
“Kevin, he makes this look easy,” I said to my husband as we coasted across the smooth ocean toward… well who knows where? “Yeah, it’s nice to be in capable hands, with someone who knows their business,” he replied.
I haven’t seen Kevin this relaxed in quite some time, the responsibilities of life and the projects at home had been keeping us busy lately, a little too busy to be honest. This day was well needed and deserved, there were no timetables, no agendas and plenty of sunshine, the morning was quickly changing our attitudes, and I could see the corners of my husband’s mouth beginning to curl upwards. We needed a day off, and THIS is just what the doctor had ordered.
    Kevin’s Summer Unwind
I had taken on the task of redecorating our home between jobs lately, and under Sharon’s direction, we managed to paint the whole interior and tidy things up. It was time, we had become “empty nesters,” the last couple of years and I wasn’t used to not having our son around to keep us occupied. When Sharon suggested a fishing trip, I was skeptical at first, but surprised by her enthusiasm.
My beautiful wife slipped on her swimsuit at the house and literally turned into the giddy girl that I’d met over thirty years ago when we boarded the boat. Captain Richard put us at ease and began our day with the same excitement that our son had when we vacationed together. I knew it was going to be a good day.
“Kevin, some of the fish we will catch today are going to be pretty substantial, you’re going to have to help Sharon reel them in more than likely.” Captain Richard explained. “I’m up for it,” I replied, not knowing what we were in for.
It took us seconds to get hooked up to multiple fish, then it was every man for himself. I was wondering if “I” was going to need help before the battle was over.
“Holy Cow!” These are nice fish,” I yelled while struggling against the rod and reel. After we caught a few fish, our watchful Captain slowed things down to give us a break and clean the bloody deck of the boat.
“I told you the fish are big,” Captain Richard said with a grin. “You two did a great job, and you only lost a couple. Let’s catch a few more and relax a little bit near the port while fishing for kings and maybe a snook.” “Sound good to me,” I replied, not knowing if I could handle another volley of big fish, but willing to try. We finished our beverages, the Captain quickly released some chum, and the battles ensued for the next thirty minutes, it was the most enjoyable torture that I’ve endured in years. I looked over at Sharon, and we both exchanged laughs while we were chided on by our taskmaster fishing guide.
“We don’t have all day! REEL!” He yelled. We quickly obeyed, and I couldn’t help but watch my middle-aged wife and her youthful composure while being pulled around the boat and proclaiming joyfully at the top of her lungs. “This is so much fun, when can we do this again? I love you, Kevin!”
Some of my fishing excursions change my life when I witness people enjoying themselves. The day I took Sharon & Kevin out for their day of fishing opened my eyes to how important it is for everyone to get away and change the scenery from time-to-time. We ALL need time away from the daily patterns of work, chores, and routine. I would be honored to take you, your loved ones and friends out for a day on the water for a welcomed distraction with me on The Lagooner.

Day 3
Tuesday, March 13th, 2018.
In Hispanic and Greek culture, a Tuesday the 13th is considered a day of bad luck just like Friday the 13th is for many, many others. If you like to randomly Google search things like I do, I suggest that on your next one, you just simply type “Tuesday the 13th”.  The results will show how, too, in other countries like Spain and Argentina, this date is also considered a misfortunate one.
I am not really a superstitious person so when I saw the date right before hitting the alarm’s snooze option once again, I really did not even make the connection that the day’s date meant bad luck.
I continued to sleep until Joha came out of the bathroom and I realized I had practically no time to get ready in a peaceful manner, like every woman likes to (or so I want to believe). For a moment, I finally made the connection of why the date seemed so oddly controversial and I just hoped it was far from being true. With my heart skipping a beat every now and then, I managed to shower and get ready, breaking a new personal timing record.
My amazing roommate had left already to get us breakfast and the group was already on its way to our first appointment of the day, the offices of Tourism Vancouver. I quickly pulled a power walk to catch up with everyone, as I visualized the streets of Vancouver in my head trying to figure out the best shortcut, and always keeping an eye on the extensive group of people dressed in a business attire making their way downtown. I kept hoping that all the pedestrian lights would turn green every time I reached a corner, and every time they would.
After walking faster enough to make my legs sore already, I caught up with the group on West Cordova St., right on time. After all, it seemed that luck was on my side and it just had been a rough wakening. Got to blame it on the Four Seasons bed, am I right?
Tourism Vancouver
9:00 a.m.
Suite 210 – 200 Burrard St., Vancouver, BC
The Tourism Vancouver presentation, mainly in charge of the Client Manager, Susan Graham, gave us an insight and a better understanding of how unionizing sales efforts and marketing strategies, assuage both Tourism Vancouver and the hospitality industry of the city to help each other to attract hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue when they get all types of markets to visit Vancouver. It was interesting to listen at how Tourism Vancouver also serves as an intermediator that canalizes and sends information where needed to create the perfect business relationship: match the right customer with the right provider at the right time.
While on the meeting, I had accidentally dropped my sugar package on the latte that Joha had kindly gotten me but I did not consider that to be bad luck as it had been pure clumsiness from my end. It actually felt as if I had luck on my side as I had managed to make it on time after a crazy, hectic morning. That being said, I wanted to be able to confirm or not whether the so-infamous reputation of the day was true, so I initiated a little game to test it out. So far, the initial scoreboard’s points looked like this:

Vancouver Convention Center
10:00 a.m.
1055 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Vancouver Convention Center is an award-winning facility known as one of the leading convention centers worldwide. The facility has two main buildings, the East Building and the West Building, and combined, it creates 466,500 square feet of meeting, exhibition, function, ballroom, and theatre space. It was designed to simultaneously cater many events, which makes it a venue with the facility of attracting over 500 events and hosts hundreds of thousands of attendees a year.
It was inaugurated in 1987 and it has been generating huge amounts of economic profits for the Province ever since, by promoting Vancouver as a hot destination for memorable and sustainable experiences.
The venue was awarded the world’s first double LEED Platinum Certified Convention Centre. Many of their constant efforts to be sustainable include:
- The roof is actually a living one that is home to beehives that help pollinate the plants on it
- A black water treatment plant recycles grey and black water from washrooms that is used for rooftop irrigation
- Natural light and ventilation are top priorities that are maximized throughout the entire venue
- They take advantage of the seawater for the cooling and heating of the facility
I probably could not give Rod MacLean, our site tour host, enough credit for the amazing job he did at explaining all about this place.
Fly over Canada
11:15 a.m.
201 – 999 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC
A fun ride. Short, but fun.
With the use of state-of-the-art technology, the ride features 8 minutes of a journey across Canada. The flying experience included wind, mist, and different smells that added to the natural and urban landscapes of this great country.
Tip: always look to the front. You do not want to spoil this flying experience by looking to the side and realizing you can watch your dangling feet’s reflection through the projectors’ screens. Whoops, I guess I just spoiled it for you.
After a safe landing, we had time to go grab lunch on our own. And as we were off schedule once again, Joha and I decided to grab pizza by the slice nearby. We made a quick stop at a Starbucks to use the bathroom – and get some iced chai tea latte, and then we carried on with our quest of feeding ourselves and not having to suffer from hunger like the previous day.
But maybe the 13ths that happen to land on a Tuesday actually do mean bad news. As we were coming back from the pizza place to attend the next appointment on schedule, we felt pretty confident on our knowledge of the city and decided to proceed without the use of any GPS. Very similar to “Marshall vs. the Machines”, if you are familiar to the show How I Met Your Mother. To our surprise, we discover that in our specific case, the machines were much more powerful than our own human knowledge. We got lost. And by the time we figured out where the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel was, we were about 30 minutes late already.
Tip No. 2: always rely on Google Maps, the human mind is treacherous.
Oh, and the scoreboard?
Erika & Joha 1 – 1 Bad Luck
Site Tour Fairmont Waterfront Hotel
1:00 p.m. (or 1:30 p.m., if you will)
1038 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC
Tumblr media
The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel was astounding and very neat. With outstanding West Coast panoramic views, the hotel had a completely different feel from Fairmont Hotel Vancouver even if both possessed the Fairmont’s signature friendly attitude of service.
The hotel’s guestrooms are categorized in the Fairmont Room, Fairmont Terrace Room, Deluxe Partial Harbor View Room, Signature Harbor View Room, and Signature Harbor View Corner Room; but I am sure that if you were to stay at the property it would not matter which guestroom, you would still enjoy of some outstanding views and world-class luxury and comfort. The suites include the West Coast Suite, Vista Suite, Garden Suite, Royal Suite, and Harbor View One- bedroom and Two-bedroom Suites.
The property features a heated outdoor pool with a view, a herb garden that is also home to beehives, a health club, as well as Guest and Business Services. Yes, it is essential to mention that this hotel is also pet friendly! Hooray!
The dining options include the on-site ARC Restaurant that features urban artisan food, the ARC Bar with live music every night of the week, and In-Room dining.
As for function spaces, the hotel is well-known for catering events like weddings and meetings to perfection. The property has function rooms in 4 levels: the lobby, level 3, level 2, and the concourse level with a total of 12 rooms which are a combination of foyers, ballrooms, boardrooms, suites, and function rooms. The Waterfront Ballroom is the biggest meeting space of the property by being able to host 788 guests.
The hotel was a little louder in comparison to the ones we had previously visited but it did not seem to affect the classy and upscale environment nor seemed to affect any of the guests. The décor was high-toned and compelling.
When the tour site ended, we headed back to the Four Seasons and Raincouver finally started to show its true colors with its grey skies forecasting an intense rainfall. Afraid that it could rain at any moment now and having acknowledged that I, of course, had left my umbrella at the hotel, I was ready to accept my beginner’s bad luck and give in to the scoreboard’s new numbers but, and to my surprise and relief, I made it to the hotel safe and dry.
Erika 2 – 1 Bad Luck
Granville Island Brewery
4:00 p.m.
1441 Cartwright Street, Vancouver, BC
Having changed outfits and relaxed for a little, Hafdís, Joha, Max, and I took a cab to Granville Island and walked around while we waited for the rest of the group to arrive. The next thing on our itinerary was to pay a visit to the famous Granville Island Brewery.
Once the group was reunited, we were divided into two so one group could tour the brewery while the other got to do some beer tasting.
Tumblr media
My group got to do the tasting first, so we were soon walked into a little, cozy tasting room, where we sat at a family-style table, and were placed 3 tasters of 5oz each in front of us. A very nice lady explained to us what we had right before our eyes, and we were encouraged – or rather peer-pressured – to drink up as she spoke.
Our tasters featured the Sunshine Coast Hefeweizen, the Lions Winter Ale, and the Infamous IPA. I have enlisted them in the order in which I liked them best as I discovered that the lower the beer’s IBU, the more likely my palate was going to be able to tolerate it. That explains why the Hefeweizen’s IBU of 15 won over the IPA’s infamous IBU of 55.
Right after my group had drunk up, it was our turn to tour around the brewery to see how the beer that our stomachs had in store now had been initially made.
And although I am not a beer fan, it was an overall nice and pleasing experience.
Bistro 101
6:00 p.m.
Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts
101 – 1505 West 2nd Avenue, Vancouver, BC
Tumblr media
Bistro 101 is the equivalent of TRU’s Accolades Dining Room but for the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.
We even got to tour the back of the house and observe the dynamic of the classrooms and working spaces of the soon-to-be professional chefs that attend the Institute.
The restaurant features a Market Menu and a West Coast Buffet, but for our group they had arranged a 3-course dinner, very similar to the dynamic we followed at Cin Cin.
The sitting arrangement was kind of sad as the group got separated into two different tables but we all seemed to be fine with it.
It was nice to see another extensive Wine Menu until you realize there is too many options and the situation turns overwhelming. I ended up going for a glass of (White) Cliffhanger, an off-dry and nice white blend of Viognier, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris.
From our dinner menu I chose the Potato, Bacon & Corn Chowder as my appetizer, Ling Cod as my entrée, and the passionfruit + Kalamansi for dessert.
This was our last meal together as a group and with which we concluded our official appointment-part of the itinerary. I can say it went quite smoothly and very lowkey as everybody was starting to realize how exhausting and hectic the city life can be – and yet still the most exciting, in my opinion.
After we figured out the billing chaos (something that I was definitely not going to miss from the trip), we took a cab back to the hotel.
Some of us concluded the trip at Celebrities, on 1022 Davie St., where my Tuesday the 13th’s bad luck made a small appearance when at the end of the night I realized that I had cracked my phone’s screen. What a game it had been.
The final scoreboard:
Erika 2 – 2 Bad Luck
A draw…
Tumblr media
The rest shall remain a mystery.

10 Beautiful Beaches You'll Be Delighted to See in Los Angeles

10 Beautiful Beaches You'll Be Delighted to See in Los Angeles
01of 11
#10: Will Rogers State Beach
•••
Los Angeles beaches may almost be as much of an icon as Disneyland or the Hollywood sign. With almost two dozen beaches in Los Angeles County to choose from, you may have a hard time picking one or two to visit during your vacation. It can be a daunting task, so we’ve compiled this guide to the best Los Angeles beaches to help you choose. The list is based on in-person research, but our readers helped, too. They voted on their favorite beaches to create the rankings we use.
If you’d like some help picking out a beach that’s “just right” for your plans, you can skip to the last page of this guide, where you can browse lists of Los Angeles beaches by type.
10. Will Rogers State Beach
Will Rogers State Beach is a long, narrow beach – nearly two miles long, sandwiched between Pacific Coast Highway and the ocean. It’s closer to Los Angeles than the Malibu beaches, but not as crowded as those further south.
This beach may invoke a feeling of deja vu: Even if you haven’t been here before, you’ve probably seen it in movies and television, including the classic “Creature from the Black Lagoon” and early seasons of “Baywatch.”
And who was this Will Rogers guy? He was one of the best-known – and most amusing – celebrities of the 1920s and 1930s, who once owned land nearby.
Will Rogers State Beach is best for: Beach volleyball, walking or biking, surfing, scuba diving. Its mild right point break is good for beginning surfers. In 2010, The Nature Conservancy gave Will Rogers State Beach an “Ocean Oscar” for Best Swimming, saying it’s “one of the nicest beaches in California to take a dip in the ocean and bask in the sunshine on a beach towel.”
Pros and Cons
Just north of Santa Monica, this beach is closer to the city than those in Malibu, but less crowded than the ones south of it.
When the beach gets busy, it can also get pretty noisy.
Parking is another sore spot, with many thinking it costs too much.
Some beachgoers complain about the men’s restroom, especially because the stalls don’t have doors.
Some sources say Will Rogers State Beach is so popular with the gay community that it should be nicknamed “Ginger Rogers,” but other online reviewers say they’ve been going there for years and never noticed. Who’s there may depend on which part of the beach you go to.
Heal the Bay often gives Will Rogers State Beach an A+ for water quality, but it can experience periodic problems in the winter.  Check current conditions.
Will Rogers State Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Will Rogers State Beach. 36% said it’s awesome, 8% said it’s good and 50% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Will Rogers Beach, 43% said swimming and 13% said surfing.
How to Get to Will Rogers State Beach
Will Rogers State Beach is just west of Santa Monica on Pacific Coast Highway, near its intersection with Temescal Canyon Road. If you need an address for your GPS or smart phone, try 15500 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades.
You can park in any of several paid lots along the highway, including the one at Gladstone’s Restaurant. Don’t try to park along Temescal Canyon Road, though. There is some free parking, but tow-away signs aren’t always visible – and the ticket and towing fees are far higher than what the parking lot charges.
You can get to Will Rogers State Beach using public transit on LA Metro Bus #534
Entrance fees are a little confusing, but I’ll try to explain. Will Rogers is a California State Beach, but it’s run by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. Basically what that means to you is that neither of them does a great job of providing information online. And if you have a State Parks day pass, it isn’t accepted here.
  02of 11
#9: Leo Carrillo State Beach
•••
Leo Carrillo State Beach is one of the most scenic beaches in Los Angeles, with a 1.5-mile-long, sandy beach, caves, and interesting rock formations.
The Leo Carrillo for whom it’s named was an actor (who played Pancho, the Cisco Kid’s sidekick), but also a conservationist who was instrumental in helping the State of California buy Hearst Castle.
Leo Carrillo State Beach is best for: Tide pooling, beachcombing, swimming, surfing and windsurfing, surf fishing, scuba diving. Photographers like Leo Carrillo State Beach and others nearby for sunset photography. Because the beach faces south and not west, it provides more even illumination.
Pros and Cons
If you’re just going to the beach for the day, this place is great. Like any southern California beach, Leo Carrillo can be foggy until afternoon, or even all day long.
Visitors often remark how uncrowded Leo Carrillo is, but it’s a further drive from LA than other beaches if you’re coming from the south.
Reviewers at Yelp give Leo Carrillo Beach very high marks, saying the beach itself is clean and not too crowded – but the campground can get quite crowded. Read their reviews.
Heal the Bay often gives Leo Carrillo State Beach an “A” for water quality, but in some years, it has problems in late spring through early summer. Check current conditions.
Leo Carrillo State Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Leo Carrillo State Beach. 38% said it’s awesome, 17% said it’s good and 44% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Leo Carrillo, 26% said tidepooling, 19% said fishing and 16% said swimming.
Camping at Leo Carrillo State Park
Within Leo Carrillo State Park, but across the highway and not on the beach itself, you’ll find a nice campground. It accommodates campers and trailers up to 31 feet long.
If you want to stay here and don’t have your own camping vehicle, Camping Adventures will deliver a fully-set-up camper to your site.
How to Get to Leo Carrillo State Beach
Leo Carrillo State Beach is 28 miles north of Santa Monica on Pacific Coast Highway. The official address is 35000 W. Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA and the entrance is on the inland side of the highway.
You can get there by driving north on Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu, or take US Hwy 101 north and then Kanan-Dume to the coast.
You’ll have to pay a fee to park in their lot, but can sometimes find free parking along the highway. State parks passes are not accepted.
  03of 11
#8: Point Dume State Beach
•••
Point Dume State Beach is located – as you might guess from its name – on a promontory, one of the south-most points along this section of east-west-running coastline. The sand isn’t all on the beach at Point Dume, it’s also piled up in a sand dune that forms a bluff protecting the beach. Not only are the views from the top of the bluffs expansive, but they provide a great spot to watch migrating gray whales in the winter.
Sheltered between sand dunes and the ocean, Point Dume provides not only a nice, sheltered beach but also some nice vistas from the top of the sand. The final scene of the original “Planet of the Apes” movie was filmed at the location in this photo. Other films  that used Point Dume are the Normandy landings in “D-Day the Sixth of June ,” Tony Stark’s seaside mansion in “Iron Man  and the ashes-scattering scene from “The Big Lebowski.”
Why is it called Dume? In 1793, explorer George Vancouver wanted to name it in after Padre Francisco Dumetz of Mission San Buenaventura, but it was misspelled “Dume” – and so it’s been ever since.
Point Dume Beach is best for: Fishing, swimming, scuba diving, tide pooling, whale-watching (in winter)
Dogs are not allowed at Point Dume because they disturb the wildlife and even if they never leave the parking lot, their scent can stop migrating birds from nesting.
Pros and Cons
Point Dume is further out of the LA metro area than the Malibu beaches, so it takes longer to get to – but that may mean smaller crowds.
Some beachgoers report that they’ve seen Dall’s porpoises and sea lions at Point Dume – and if you’re there at the right time, you may see some California gray whales swimming by.
Like all southern California beaches, Point Dume can be foggy until early afternoon – or even all day long, especially in summer.
The cliffs behind the beach protect it from wind.
Back in the wild 1960s and 70s, Point Dume was a clothing optional beach, but nowadays, nude sunbathing is strictly illegal in Los Angeles County.
Water quality watchdog Heal the Bay doesn’t monitor Point Dume State Beach, but you can check current conditions at nearby Zuma Beach to get an idea of what’s going on.
Point Dume State Beach is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors and is one of the few California State Parks that does not accept the Annual Day Use Pass. Their parking fee varies by season.
Point Dume State Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Point Dume State Beach. 42% said it’s awesome, 7% said it’s good and 48% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Point Dume, 31% said swimming and 25% said wildlife watching and tidepooling.
How to Get to Point Dume State Beach
Point Dume State Beach is 18 miles west of Santa Monica and just off Pacific Coast Highway. The official address is 7103 Westward Rd., Malibu, CA. Turn west onto Westward Beach Road toward the ocean.
You’ll find some free parking along the roadside on the way in, or stop freeloading off the state parks and use the paid lot at the end of the road.
When it’s busy in summer, they run a shuttle from a second parking lot on Westward Beach Road.
To get there from US Hwy 101, exit at Kanan Road and turn right when you reach Pacific Coast Highway.

#7: El Matador Beach
•••
El Matador Beach is one of the cliff-foot strands known as “pocket beaches” that make up the Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach, on the west end of Malibu.
This south-facing beach can be crowded during the summer, however during the off season, it’s lightly visited with plenty of opportunity for romantic strolls, exploring the sea caves and taking pictures of the “sea stacks,” eroded sandstone pillars that line the shore.
It’s called a “pocket” beach because it’s so small you might think it can fit in your pocket.
El Matador Beach is best for: Romantic walks, swimming, bodyboarding and bodysurfing
Pros and Cons
The beach is small and can be crowded in summer, making parking difficult to find.
This is one of the few beaches in the Los Angeles area where you can go in the water and still see your feet, it’s so clear.
Pets are not allowed on the beach.
El Matador Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate El Matador State Beach. 43% said it’s awesome, 6% said it’s good and 46% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at El Matador, 23% said swimming, 18% said wildlife watching and tidepooling, 14% said walking and 12% said surfing.
How to Get to El Matador Beach
El Matador Beach is 10 miles north of Malibu on Pacific Coast Highway (CA Hwy 1). The entrance sign is parallel to the highway, making it hard to see until you’re almost past it.
Check the tide times before you visit. Some of the smaller coves get cut off at high tide.

#6: Malibu Lagoon
•••
Malibu Lagoon State Beach is a white, sandy beach with a lagoon and wetlands nearby that draw marine life and shorebirds, and the waves are usually mild.
You can get a sense of the area’s past at the Malibu Lagoon Museum or tour the Adamson House, a luxurious, a 1920s Spanish-Moorish-style home featuring locally-made Malibu Tile and tons of fantastic artisan touches.
At low tide, you can walk west along the sand to get a peek into the exclusive, gated Malibu Colony – as long as you stay closer to the water than the houses.
Just next door is Surfrider Beach, home to some of the area’s best waves. Some say those who ride them are less territorial toward outsiders than in other locations. Malibu Lagoon is so close to Surfrider Beach that we’re treating them as one – and there’s a lot to do besides the normal things you do where ocean meets water, including some interesting wetlands to explore and a chance to see an exclusive neighborhood.
Malibu Lagoon is best for: Tide pooling, swimming, fishing, wildlife-watching, walking. Beach volleyball and surfing at Surfrider Beach.
You can also vsit the historical museum and tour the Adamson House.
Pros and Cons
So many things to do make Malibu Lagoon a good choice if you like some variety, but if all you want is sand and ocean, you might like other places better.
Many locals rave about how natural this spot is in the middle of built-up, sometimes-pretentious Malibu and close to the rest of LA.
The lagoon is least attractive at low tide. Occasionally, dead seaweed on the beach can create a stink.
The Adamson House located nearby is well worth a visit if you like early twentieth century homes and it’s a great little peek into a wealthy family’s lifestyle from that time.
Parking is limited and fills up, sometimes before noon even on a weekday – and they place the “Lot Full” signs so far off the road that you can’t see them until after you’ve turned in. Street parking close by is limited and usually full. We hear there’s free parking west of the beach, off PCH on Malibu Road, behind the shopping center, but it’s almost half a mile from the beach entrance and 3/4 mile to the Adamson House.
The Malibu Surfing Classic is held at Surfrider Beach every September.
Water quality watchdog Heal the Bay monitors Surfrider Beach, just north of Malibu Lagoon State Beach and their ratings vary widely. Check current conditions.
Malibu Lagoon State Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Malibu Lagoon State Beach. 47% said it’s awesome, 17% said it’s good and 29% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Malibu Lagoon, 23% said swimming, but 32% said wildlife watching and tidepooling.
How to Get to Malibu Lagoon State Beach
Malibu Lagoon State Beach is 13 miles west of Santa Monica on Pacific Coast Highway (CA Hwy 1). The official address is 23200 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA. You can get there from US Hwy 101 by exiting at Las Virgenes Road, driving to Pacific Coast Highway and turn left on it.
The parking lot and nature area entrance is at Cross Creek Road. You can also park in the lot in front of the Adamson House or in the county parking lot on the west side of the Malibu Creek Bridge.

#5: Venice Beach
•••
The town and the beach have the same name, but we’re talking about the sandy part here, along with the beachfront walk that faces it. The outrageous array of humanity that regularly appears on this beach can upstage even the best day on the sand and water, and the mix is irresistible.
Venice Beach is best for: People-watching, bicycling and walking
Pros and Cons
This beach scene is noisy and chaotic, something people either love or hate.
There’s no entrance fee, but nearby parking lots fill up early, on weekends making it sometimes difficult to get to. Try the Venice Beach lot at the end of Washington Street or one of the nearby paid parking lots off Rose Avenue, Bay Street or Venice Boulevard.
Water quality is generally good here during dry weather, but Heal the Bay gives Venice Beach an “F” grade when it’s wet.
Venice Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Venice Beach (the sandy part, not the town). 47% said it’s awesome, 12% said it’s good and 36% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Venice Beach, 30% said people watching, 17% said swimming and 13% said bicycle riding.
How to Get to Venice Beach
Venice Beach centered around the Venice Pier at Washington Street. Exit I-405 at Washington and go west.

#4: Manhattan Beach, The Strand
•••
Manhattan Beach may well be the prototype for the quintessential Los Angeles beach. A Beach Boys’ hangout in their early days and the birthplace of beach volleyball, this west-facing urban beach attracts a broad mix of visitors.
There’s always a lot going on at Manhattan Beach, which makes it feel lively, fun and lived-in – and the beachfront homes here are among the nicest along the coast (good for gawking at and daydreaming about).
You can use this guide to find out all the things you can do in Manhattan Beach, on the sand and in town.
Manhattan Beach is best for: People-watching, beach volleyball, surfing, swimming, fishing, walking and bicycling
Pros and Cons
This urban beach is always busy. It can be hard to find parking and nearly impossible to find a free parking space. Because it’s in the middle of town, it’s easy to find a place for a cup of coffee, a meal or a drink – or to do a little shopping.
Street parking here is scarce. Be prepared to feed the streetside parking meters or those in the parking lots – and don’t push your luck by overstaying your time limit. Parking enforcement is diligent.
No pets are allowed on the beach, but they can walk on the beachside sidewalk.
Heal the Bay usually gives Manhattan Beach an “A” grade, but it has occasional problems in wet areas. Check current conditions.
Manhattan Beach Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Manhattan Beach (the sandy one, not the town). 49% said it’s awesome, 10% said it’s good and 36% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Manhattan Beach, 19% said swimming, 15% said people watching, 13% bicycle riding and 12% walking.
How to Get to Manhattan Beach
The Manhattan Beach pier is at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard. From I-405 , exit on Hawthorne Boulevard north and turn left onto Manhattan Beach Boulevard. From Pacific Coast Highway, turn west on Manhattan Beach Boulevard.
From LAX, head west on Imperial Highway to Vista del Mar and follow Vista del Mar and Highland Avenue south to downtown Manhattan Beach.

#3: Abalone Cove, Palos Verdes
•••
The official name is Abalone Cove Shoreline Park and it’s actually two beaches in one place: Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove. Its location on the Palos Verdes peninsula gives it some of the best views of Catalina Island you’ll find anywhere.
The tide pools at Abalone Cove are full of sea creatures, protected as a State Ecological Preserve which make taking of protected animals and marine life illegal.
Abalone Cove may be closed on major holidays.
Abalone Cove is best for: Swimming, tide pooling.
Abalone Cove is only good for surfing once in a while, and that’s mostly in summer – and when it is, locals don’t like to share
You can also take a hike or dive offshore.  Pacific Wilderness has information about scuba diving at Abalone Cove
The tide pools at Abalone Cove are full of all kinds of fascinating sea creatures including colorful starfish, giant slugs, periwinkles, hermit crabs and anemones – but unfortunately, not the abalone the cove is named for.
Pros and Cons
Abalone Cove can be packed on busy weekends and it’s a long drive from the freeway, which takes a while.
The main part of the park is on top of the cliffs and it’s a long walk from the parking lot to the beach, which makes it less than the best place to take smaller children who don’t like to walk.
Kelp can pile up on the beach, decaying, smelling bad and attracting flies. Even though it’s a perfectly normal process, it’s not the most pleasant thing to see.
Speaking of unexpected sights, nearby Sacred Cove (which is also called Smuggler’s Cove) is said by some to be a nude beach. Nude sunbathing is strictly illegal in Los Angeles County, but that may not stop some people from baring it all anyway.
Abalone Cove charges a parking fee but no entrance fee. It’s hard to find parking anywhere else in the area and somebody’s gotta pay to maintain the place, so your best bet it to just pay up.
Heal the Bay routinely gives Abalone Cove Beach an A+ for water quality, but any beach can have temporary problems. Check current conditions.
If you’re going down to the tide pools, wear sneakers, water shoes or something with a good sole so you don’t slip on the wet rocks.
Dogs are not allowed.
Abalone Cove Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Abalone Cove Beach. 52% said it’s awesome, 5% said it’s good and 30% gave it the lowest possible rating.
When we asked about the best things to do at Abalone Cove, 31% said swimming and 21% said wildlife watching and tidepooling. 13% said it’s also good for fishing.
How to Get to Abalone Cove Beach
Abalone Cove Beach is located at The address is 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes CA, between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. You can get there from the South Bay by following Hawthorn Boulevard to the end and turning right, or by connecting with Palos Verdes Blvd from Pacific Coast Highway in south Redondo Beach.
You can also get there using public transportation on LA Metro Bus #344.
To get to Sacred Cove, walk along Palos Verdes Drive from the parking area to trails that lead to it.
  09of 11
#2: Zuma Beach
•••
The northernmost Los Angeles beach has lots of room and if you’re lucky, you may see dolphins in the surf.
With white sand, clean water and plenty of room, Zuma Beach is a perennial favorite with residents and visitors alike. This south-facing beach attracts lots of visitors on summer weekends, but Zuma Beach is relatively quiet during the week.
If you want to sound like a local, drop the “beach” and just call it “Zuma.”
Zuma Beach is best for: Surfing, swimming, beach volleyball, whale-watching (in winter)
Pros and Cons
On a busy day, the parking lot and every inch of roadside parking are packed – and so is the sand.
Because Zuma Beach is a bit further north, the water is colder than at other Los Angeles beaches (about 68F in mid-summer).
The Zuma Beach snack bar is better-suited to kids than adults. If you’re going to be at Zuma very long, stop on the way up from Malibu and pick up something to eat.
No pets are allowed.
Zuma Beach Ratings
We asked our reades to rate Zuma Beach. 60% said it’s awesome, 6% said it’s good and 29% gave it the lowest possible rating. That’s the best rating profile of any Los Angeles beach in our guide.
When we asked about the best things to do at Zuma, 23% said swimming and 14% said surfing. Fishing, bicycle riding and wildlife watching are also popular.
How to Get to Zuma Beach
Zuma Beach is 19 miles north of Malibu on Pacific Coast Highway.
If you get there early, you can park for free on the west side of Pacific Coast Highway. Otherwise, park in the paid parking lot, which has over 2,000 spaces.
  10of 11
#1: Paradise Cove
•••
Paradise Cove is accessed through a privately-owned parking lot with a restaurant, framed by bluffs and with nice, level sand.
This small beach, located north of Malibu just off Highway 1 is framed by bluffs and looks out on boats moored nearby. Don’t be surprised if it looks familiar. Television programs “The OC,” “Baywatch, and “The Rockford Files” were filmed here, and movies “American Pie 2” and “Beach Blanket Bingo.”
Owner Bob Morris grew up in Malibu and wants to preserve a slice of the Southern California beach life he grew up with, making Paradise Cove the kind of place tourists seldom find.
The Beach Cafe’s attire is 100% casual. We recommend a table outside by the sand or inside by the windows looking out on the beach.
Paradise Cove is best for: Swimming, fishing, beach volleyball, people-watching
Pros and Cons
You’ll have to pay to get in, and parking spaces are limited, but we love the lively, “let’s go to the beach” feel – and it’s fun to sit at the restaurant and just watch it all.
All-day parking costs more than nearby public beaches in Malibu, but restaurant validation covers 4 hours’ parking, enough time for a meal and a little beach play.
Entry fees keep crowds at bay.
Avoid weekend waits. Call 310-457-2503 for restaurant reservations. Weekdays crowds are just enough to make it feel lively.
Restaurant prices seem high at first, but portions are enormous. One appetizer order can feed four. Splitting an entree or taking half home makes portions and prices just right.
According to Heal the Bay, the water quality at Malibu’s Paradise Cove Beach varies widely. Check the latest report if you’re concerned.
Paradise Cove Ratings
We asked our readers to rate Paradise Cove. 61% said it’s awesome, 11% said it’s good and 22% gave it the lowest possible rating. That ranks it with Zuma Beach as the best-rated in this guide.
When we asked about the best things to do at Paradise Cove, 23% said swimming,19% said people watching, 11% swimming or fishing and 9% surfing or scuba diving.
How to Get to Paradise Cove Beach
Paradise Cove Beach is on Pacific Coast Highway (CA Hwy 1) in Malibu. The address is 28128 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA
There’s a per-person fee if you walk in or get dropped off. For two or more people, it’s less expensive to drive in and park. Parking fees vary depending on how long you stay at Paradise Cove and whether you get validation from the restaurant.

The Lists: Best Los Angeles Beaches by Type
•••
These lists give you a different way of looking for the best beach for what you want to do. It also includes a few beaches that have enough negatives to keep them out of the top ten but that are nevertheless good for specific activities.
Beach With the Best Waves for Surfing
Locals love Zuma Beach north of Malibu for its good waves and clean water. You’ll find lots of surfing buddies in Manhattan Beach
Best Beach to Watch People
Venice Beach Los Angeles’ quirkiest beach can be its most interesting, attracting a cast of characters fit for any Hollywood movie
Best for Walking
The long, paved walking path with Santa Monica Bay views makes Manhattan Beach our favorite place to take a walk
Best for the Beach Experience
Paradise Cove is a small, private beach that offers a charming, old-fashioned beach experience and a beachside restaurant
Best for Beach Volleyball
Manhattan Beach is the birthplace of beach volleyball and home of the world’s first beach volleyball tournament. Up toward Malibu, Will Rogers State Park is often less crowded.
Best for a Bonfire
Dockweiler Beach is the only Los Angeles County beach where you can have bonfire.
Best for Tide Pools
Leo Carrillo State Park and Malibu Lagoon State Beach – both in Malibu – and Abalone Cove in Palos Verdes offer great tide pools to check out at low tide.
Best Beach for a Romantic Stroll
A secluded, little pocket beach north of Malibu, El Matador Beach is a great place to watch the sunset with your sweetie
Best for Families
Redondo Beach offers lots of sand to play on, a pier full of amusements and a long, paved path for biking or skating making it a place you can take the kids to and let them run until they’re exhausted
Best for Amusements
Santa Monica Beach is home of a lively amusement park on the pier and summer concerts
Best for Ocean Swimming
Swimming in the ocean at a Los Angeles beach is a chilly dip any time of year. Water temperatures vary from 60°F in winter to 68°F in August, the warmest month. If you’re determined to give it a try, The Nature Conservancy gave Will Rogers State Beach an “Ocean Oscar”in 2010 as the best California beach for ocean swimming, saying it’s “one of the nicest beaches in California to take a dip in the ocean and bask in sunshine on a beach towel.”
The Los Angeles Times rates Zuma Beach north of Malibu as a good place for swimmers, saying “frequent visitors are no longer surprised to find themselves swimming among dolphins” – and a quick search on YouTube will yield lots of videos to back them up.
Best for a Weekend Getaway
The beach, pier and marina in Redondo Beach serve up plenty to keep you busy all weekend
Los Angeles Beaches to Bare it All
Public nudity is illegal anywhere in Los Angeles County and there are no nude beaches here. The nearest option is San Onofre at the north edge of San Diego County, but law enforcement hassles have limited its use. Next closest nude beaches are San Diego’s Blacks Beach or More Mesa Beach near Santa Barbara.
The Truth about Southern California Sunshine
The Beach Boys weren’t quite telling the truth when they crooned about West Coast sunshine. If you’ve never been here before, you may find Southern California less sunny than you expected, especially at the beaches.
When temperatures rise, so does the air, pulling cool, moist marine air inland onto the beaches like a foggy blanket. It’s so predictable in early summer that local residents dub it “June gloom,” but it can start in May and sometimes extends into July and August, too.
Some days, the fog and low clouds disappear early, but on other days, like a carefree beach bum, the sun may not put in an appearance until mid- to late-afternoon. Don’t forget to layer on the sunscreen even on these overcast days because the UV light goes right through the clouds.

Age-proof your body

Want to live longer, feel stronger and look much younger than you really are? Here's 15 ways to do just that
CUT THOSE BAD HABITS – NOW
OK, let’s start with the basics. ‘Ageing is a natural process, but it can be accelerated by inflammation, which causes damage to tissues and cells,’ explains Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa, director and GP at Your Doctor. ‘Bad habits such as smoking, excess alcohol and poor diet can all speed up a process called telomere- shortening. Telomeres are the caps at the end of each strand of DNA that protect our chromosomes, like the plastic tips at the end of shoelaces. Without telomeres, DNA strands become damaged and our cells can’t do their job properly. Take steps to cut out those unhealthy habits, however, and it’s possible to significantly reduce the speed of telomere-shortening.’
DON'T RUSH YOUR EVENING SKINCARE REGIME
Choosing a good, antioxidant-rich anti-ageing night cream is only half the battle. ‘Without realising it, many of us hold tension in our jaw, between the brows and along the hairline – which can make us look much older,’ says Natalie Hart from Titanic Spa. ‘When applying your evening moisturiser, spend at least five minutes massaging your face. This will help release excess tension and clear your mind, ready for a night of replenishing sleep.’
SHIELD YOUR SKIN
Pollution can take a toll on your looks. ‘Studies show that components of air pollution can damage DNA in cells and contribute to premature skin ageing such as wrinkling and pigmentation spots,’ says Dr Anjali Mahto, spokesperson for the British Skin Foundation. Use an antioxidant serum, then a moisturiser with SPF, she says.
LEAVE WORK WHERE IT BELONGS
A healthy work-life balance is key to looking and feeling youthful – so switch off (literally) at the end of the working day. More than half of workers in high-pressure jobs suffer dangerous levels of stress at home and increased risk of heart disease, partly as a result of being constantly connected via smartphones, laptops and tablets, says a recent study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
CURL UP WITH A GOOD BOOK
Yes, reading helps you live longer. That’s according to researchers at Yale University, who tracked the reading habits of more than 3,500 older people across a 12-year period. Regardless of their gender, health, wealth or education, book-lovers were 20 per cent less likely to die during the course of the study. One theory is that reading about other people’s lives boosts empathy and social skills, both of which have been linked to longevity.
OPT FOR ORANGE
Want a product that will really make your skin glow? Get picky in the fruit and veg aisle. ‘Consuming the right food has a huge impact on skin health, including the 80 per cent of skin that topical products can’t reach,’ says dermatologist Dr Howard Murad. ‘Diet provides the necessary nutrients to build strong, healthy new cells, and antioxidants that neutralise cell-damaging free radicals. Carrots, sweet potatoes and oranges are packed with vitamins A and C, which help restore damaged collagen.’
DON'T BURY YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND
The best way to age-proof your body is to get to know it. Recognise what’s normal – and what’s not – for you, and don’t delay before getting any new symptoms or concerns checked out. ‘This applies even if you’re young and otherwise healthy,’ days Dr Di Cuffa. ‘Many health conditions start with vague and general symptoms, but ignoring them could be delaying a serious diagnosis and preventing early intervention or treatment.’ Likewise, it’s so important to attend screening and routine checks. For example, around one in four UK women ignores cervical screening invitations, according to Jo’s Trust, so don’t overlook those reminders!
UP THE INTENSITY
No, you can’t get away with yoga alone. Are you getting your quota of cardio exercise? ‘If you really want to slow down the rate at which you age, high-intensity training is the most effective option,’ insists personal trainer Zana Morris. ‘It’s the best way to increase muscle mass and blood flow, lose fat and minimise protein loss. ‘But it’s also important to note that over-exercising can be very ageing, too: any moderate to high-intensity exercise beyond 45 minutes will eat into your protein levels and speed up the ageing process,’ says Morris. So a 15-minute burst is the optimum.’
DRINK BONE BROTH
Bone broth is rich in collagen, the protein needed to keep your skin, hair and nails looking young. Your body’s production of collagen falls as you age and some nutrition scientists now believe that getting collagen through diet can help boost the body’s supply. ‘Consuming bone broth is one of the best ways to replenish collagen in your body so your hair regains lustre and your nails, joints and teeth strengthen,’ says Dr Sara Gottfried. You can use beef, chicken or fish bones. The slow cooking breaks the collagen down into gelatin,’ says Gottfried. ‘Drink a warm cup daily.’
HAVE A DENTAL CHECK-UP
A quarter of UK adults admit they haven’t seen a dentist in the past two years, according to the Oral Health Foundation. Guilty as charged? Book that appointment now. ‘Nothing ages you more than unhealthy, stained teeth,’ says sports psychologist and fitness trainer Melinda Nicci. ‘Keep them white between check-ups by cutting down on caffeine and red wine, and eating foods that promote pearly whites. Strawberries are great for this because they contain malic acid, a natural enamel whitener.’
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FRIENDS
It’s easy to let your social life slip when you’re busy with work and family commitments – but doing so can make you age quicker, warns Dr Emer MacSweeney, medical director and CEO of Re:Cognition Health (recognitionhealth.com). ‘Being in an active and sociable environment, conversing with others and solving problems is a good way to stimulate the brain, keeping it agile, active and young,’ she says. Need more persuading to meet pals tonight? Having a wide circle of friends can reduce your chances of developing dementia, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, which looked at the lives of 2,200 older women in the US. Those with large social networks were 26 per cent less likely to develop dementia than those who had just a few pals.
DON'T SKIP YOUR YOGA CLASS
Yoga increases flexibility, improves balance and helps manage stress – all of which can help slow the ageing process. So the findings of a recent study at the University of the Sunshine Coast Australia should really come as no surprise: yoga turns back the clock. ‘Yoga increases the blood flow from your heart to your head, sending more oxygen to your face, rejuvenating your skin,’ says Steve Tansey, head of research and development at Les Mills UK, who commissioned the study analysing the effects of twice-weekly yoga classes on a group of over-55s. ‘It increases your strength, particularly that of the spinal erector muscles, so can make you feel younger when you stand, sit and move around throughout the day.'
TRY A COLLAGEN LATTE
Can’t quit the coffee habit? Make sure your morning fix benefits your skin by swapping to a collagen latte. Dr Gottfried has been starting her mornings with this creamy drink for several years. Collagen is a protein that improves skin, hair and nails. As you age, levels of collagen in the body start to fall, but it’s now thought that taking it as a supplement can help slow down the process as you age. ‘Once a collagen latte became my morning ritual, my skin started to glow,’ says Dr Gottfried. ‘Place 250ml of low-toxin decaffeinated coffee or tea in a blender with 1-2 teaspoons of collagen powder. You can also add 1tbsp of coconut oil. Blend for up to 15 seconds until frothy like a latte.’
HIT THE FACE GYM
We all know that working out gives us a healthy glow. But did you know exercise may even turn around the visible signs of skin ageing, such as sagging? ‘With age, the outer layer of our skin thickens and becomes more dry and flaky while the innermost layer, the dermis, starts to thin,’ says Dr Gottfried. ‘But if you exercise, your outer layer of skin doesn’t thicken as early and your inner layer doesn’t become thin. It’s due to proteins called myokines that are released by working muscles and increase after exercise. ‘Your skin uses myokines, and the more provided, the younger it stays,’ says Gottfied. In a study at McMaster University in the USA, a group of people aged 20 to 86 exercised for 30 minutes, twice a week at 65 per cent of their maximum heart rate. After three months, the skin composition of the older subjects looked like that of the twenty-to-forty-year olds.
EMBRACE THE SHEET MASK TREND
When all else fails, stick a sheet over your face! One of this year’s hottest anti-ageing trends, sheet masks, first hit the beauty headlines in South Korea before attracting a cult following in the Western world over recent months, too. Saturated in skin-saving ingredients, the masks work their magic while you lie back and relax for 15 minutes.
