Not all turtles are slow. Meet the Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox). This critter is relatively quick on land and is a rapid swimmer thanks to its hydrodynamic, flattened shell, and four strongly-webbed feet. It sticks mostly to water and is equipped with a long neck and snout that pokes above the surface, like a snorkel, to help it breathe. Had an unusual passerby today at work, the #FloridaSoftshellTurtle. I was going to help her get to water (after properly identifying what she was...) but she didn’t need my help. As soon as I moved away she sprinted to the lake with impressive speed. Turns out this is one of the only species of #turtle that actively crosses land for better living conditions.
