"I'll stake my wig you meant to say more than that when you came in."

"Nor would I! I would've seen you to the deuce had Livesey not been here - but I have heard you, and I will do what you want, but I think the worse of you for it!"

That's still true of course‚ but I'd be remiss not to mention #The equally impressive group on the other side of the camera; not least the great John Lucarotti as writer. I've long loved his work (I'd #Argue he was the best author Target had working for him‚ I loved his DW books as a kid). He does a wonderful job here‚ capturing so much of #The essence of the book. I've seen other adaptations and remembered little‚ but this brought up very specific memories of 8yr old me hiding #In corners and reading‚ with great excitement‚ of Long John Silver‚ and the Squire‚ Dr Livesey‚ Israel Hands... The toing and froing back #And forth between boat and island; the apple barrel and the strange‚ snake like charisma of Silver.. Lucarotti somehow translates it all #Onto the screen. He's a master of dialogue too‚ pitching the sailor talk just right so that it sounds authentic of time and place and style #But is neither incompressible nor ridiculous. A great treatment‚ with a great cast to do it justice. Next time.. Land ahoy mateys...

A: the cast of Treasure Island (1977). You know you've got a hell of a cast when #Patrick Troughton himself is reduced to background work (although I'm confident he'll come into it more‚ he's playing Israel Hands) #Alfred Burke was‚ naturally‚ my main reason for getting hold of this. It's been delight upon delight however to see so many iconic faces #From classic TV; the Beeb really weren't messing around with this one. It's hard to pick an mvp from such a cast but I gotta say David #Collings absolutely smashes it as a terrifyingly otherworldly Blind Pew. Im sure I'd have been quite terrified if I'd seen this as a nipper #A leisurely start to the story (I always forget how long it takes them to actually get on a boat) but I've high hopes indeed for the rest
