Lyhdynkantajat (Finnish for "the lantern bearers") is a group of sculptures at the front door of the Helsinki Central Station. The sculptures were designed by Emil Wikström, one of the most important sculptors during the Golden Age of Finnish Art. Completed in 1914, Lyhdynkantajat is part of the facade of the Art Nouveau station designed by Eliel Saarinen. Four male figures made of granite bear spherical lamps in their hands which light up at night. The square-jawed figures have muscular chests, but the bottom parts of their bodies consist of columns decorated in a way typical to Saarinen. They have haircuts typical of the Awakening movement. The sculptures have been compared to massive stone sculptures found in Egyptian and Assyrian sculpture art. Wikström was interested in ancient sculpture art, and the figures were inspired by ancient herms, columns whose upper part was sculpted to resemble a human figure, originally that of the god Hermes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyhdynkantajat #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #architecture #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Helsinki Central railway station) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg3y2AYOCYL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The House of the Estates was built in 1888-1890 and inaugurated in January 1891. Architect Gustaf Nyström designed the building. The familiar design of Greek temple facades, complete with columns, adorns the facade of the House. The tympanum depicts a group of symbolic bronze figures, completed by sculptor Emil Wikström in 1903, the central figure being the Russian Emperor Alexander I confirming the laws and national rights of Finland. The building was used by the three common estates of the realm of Finland: the clergy, burghers and peasants. However, the building was too small to house the unicameral parliament that superseded the estates in 1906. Today the dignified Neo-Renaissance building serves as a venue for meetings and official functions held by the Prime Minister’s Office and other offices of the central government. The next time I'm in Heksinki, I'd like to explore what's in the building and the surrounding park 💚 https://valtioneuvosto.fi/en/premises/goverment/house-of-the-estates https://vihreatsylit.fi/en/saatytalonpuisto/ #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Kruununhaka) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgw1Mn3BCto/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I think my favourite museum in Helsinki is the National Museum of Finland. There are so many reasons: Showcases the Finnish history of 10000 years with detailed exhibitions, The building is designed by Eliel Saarinen (and Gesellius and Lindgren), One of the best examples of National Romanticism, Frescoes by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, A beautiful garden and museum shop, And maybe the most important reason, that bear statue by Emil Wikström! If you have limited time in Helsinki, Kansallismuseo is the place to go to learn as much as possible. . . . . . . #atamantourshelsinki #atamantours #walkingtours #privatetours #citytours #tourguide #helsinkiwalks #helsinki #finland #visitfinland #visithelsinki #myhelsinki #helsinkiofficial #ourfinland #kansallismuseo #nationalmuseumoffinland #elielsaarinen #saarinen #hermangesellius #armaslindgren #nationalromanticism #akseligallenkallela #prehistoric #finnishhistory #emilwikström #bearstatue #karhu (at Kansallismuseo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGzyA4qgsu9/?igshid=1jepfv1f754
