Am Sonntag fahren wir durch glühende Hitze kreuz und quer über Schotterwege Richtung Fort Walsh. Das Fort wurde in den Siebzigerjahren des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts von der North-West-Mounted-Police gegründet. Die Polizisten sollten für Ruhe und Ordnung und die Durchsetzung der kanadischen Gesetze in diesem Gebiet sorgen, nachdem ein Camp von Nakoda-Indianern von Wolfsjägern, die auf der Suche nach ihren Pferden waren, überfallen worden war. Beim Massaker von Cypress Hill waren viele Bewohner getötet worden. Dieser Vorfall beschleunigte die Entsendung der NWMP in die Region und in der Folge pflegten diese und die First Nations freundschaftliche Beziehungen.

Dann verloren die in Montana angestammten Lakota-Indianer die Schlacht am Little Big Horn gegen die amerikanische Kavallerie und Häuptling Sitting Bull floh mit seinem Volk, das ca. 5000 Menschen umfasste, in das Grenzgebiet von Alberta und Saskatchewan.

Die Kanadier versuchten den Lakota zu helfen, aber ihre Stammeskämpfe mit den hier angesiedelten Cree-Indianern - aufgrund von Nahrungsmangel wegen der stark dezimierten Büffelherden - sowie der Konsum von Alkohol führten immer wieder zu Konflikten. Häuptling Sitting Bull wurde dazu veranlasst, sich mit seinem Volk weiter im Osten anzusiedeln. Aber die Lebensweise der Lakota war zerstört und Alkohol sowie Zivilisationskrankheiten setzten dem Volk weiter zu. Sitting Bull zog schließlich mit dem Rest seines Stammes, der auf ca. 300 Menschen geschrumpft war, zurück nach Montana in ein Reservat. Die Kultur der Lakota war somit endgültig zerstört.

Zufällig sind wir auf unserer Fahrt auf den Trail geraten, auf dem die Lakota damals Richtung Osten gezogen sind und der heute noch nicht breiter ist als ein Feldweg. Beim letzten Stück vor dem Fort überlegt sich die Hälfte unserer Reisegesellschaft ernsthaft, aus dem Auto auszusteigen und den extrem steilen Abstieg in die voraus liegende Senke lieber zu Fuß zu bewältigen. Aber Augen zu und durch, und sowohl Balou als auch sein Herrchen bewältigen die Steilhänge auf beiden Seiten der Senke ohne einmal durchzudrehen. Am Ende des Weges entdecken wir ein Schild Road closed ach was!

Wir besichtigen das Fort und erfahren einiges über den Ort und seine Geschichte. Der junge Mann, der uns in voller NWMP-Uniform über das Gelände führt und sich zu Tode schwitzt, leiert seinen Text in einer Geschwindigkeit herunter, die uns an die Grenzen unserer Übersetzungsfähigkeit bringt.

Als wir zum Auto zurückkommen, das in der prallen Sonne steht Überraschung und nur damit die Arbeit nicht ausgeht: durch die extreme Hitze und starke Sonneneinstrahlung haben sich die Klebepunkte von ein paar Fensterstützen gelöst, so dass die Fenster nicht mehr aufgemacht werden können.

Balous hauseigener Techniker repariert den Schaden abends in einem schönen, Schatten spendenden Park am Elkwater Lake. Den erreichen wir durch die Weiterfahrt über eine Schottersrecke durch die Cypress Hills, die mit Wald bewachsen sind und in denen plötzlich sehr angenehme Temperaturen herrschen. Und ganz nebenbei sind wir hier in den Bundesstaat Alberta eingereist.

Am wesentlich kühleren Montag fahren wir Richtung Writing-On-Stones Provincial Park. Über uns hängen Gewitter und der Chinook, der Präriewind, tobt sich aus. Ein plötzlich einsetzender Platzregen, den der extreme Wind gegen unser Auto peitscht, verwandelt die Schotterpiste zu Mus. Balou macht seinen Freischwimmer auf glatteisähnlichen Bedingungen, die Fahrtgeschwindigkeit
