Attraction, armed force, gravitational force and lifting force. Powerhouse, forcefield, fuel and powerful action. Atomic power, power of healing, muscle power and mental power. Power lifter, expression of power, power feed and power station. Part-time work force, wind force, bouncing force. We encounter the concepts of power and strength again and again in everyday life – both in their literal and figurative sense. These concepts are ubiquitous and yet they remain abstract.
Well then, what do force and power really mean?
These are terms from physics, where force refers to something that can cause acceleration or deformation of a body. Power is the force required to get work done, consuming energy.
What causes forces to occur and how are they applied?
Force comes in four fundamental forms, also known as the basic forces of physics:
Gravitational force The first of these is of course the gravitational force (gravity). This affects us not only through the earth, but also in the opposite direction. Even though the effects may not be tangible, every mass in the universe attracts every other mass. Gravity is always attractive and depends not only on mass, but also on distance from other masses. Its strength is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This means that the gravitational force has an infinite range. Exchange particles, “gravitons”, have a relative strength of 10-38 and a range [m] of ∞.
Electromagnetic force The next force that we know from daily life is the electromagnetic force. It occurs wherever electrically charged particles interact, for example in electricity, radio waves or solar rays. Electromagnetic force is caused by electric charge and can attract (in the case of opposite charges) or repel (when charges have the same polarity). Their range is infinite and, like gravity, decreases with the square root of the distance between the charges. Exchange particles, “photons”, have a relative strength of 10 -2 and a range [m] of ∞.
The weak force Then we come to the weak force. This is very closely linked to radioactivity and causes our sun to produce light. The weak force is the force that allows elementary particles to change themselves into each other (e.g. an electron can change into a neutrino and a quark can change itself into another quark, a process known as beta decay, where a neutron changes into a proton). The weak force only occurs in subatomic particles, and their range extends to only one-thousandth of the diameter of a proton. Although essential to life, people are generally unaware of the existence of the weak or the strong force. Exchange particles, W + , W – and Z 0have a relative strength of 10-3 and a range [m] of 10 -18 .
The strong force The strong force is ultimately the one that holds atomic nuclei together. Quarks in each atomic nucleus communicate with each other by exchanging gluons. The farther apart they move, the greater the strong force becomes, and this holds these particles together. The strong force is the strongest of the four forces of nature, but has a range of only one atomic diameter. Exchange particles, gluons, have a relative strength of 1 and a range [m] of 2.5*10 -15 .
So our life is determined by these four forces. Modern physics books now assumes that before the Big Bang, only one elemental force controlled everything that occurred. During the expansion that accompanied the Big Bang, the four separate forces known to us now separated. In fact, these four forces are four presenting forms of that one elemental force. If the big bang theory is correct, we should be able to describe the four forces within a common theoretical framework – known as the 'Theory of everything'.

In practice …we are almost completely unaware of the strong and weak forces. On the other hand, we are very aware of the workings of gravity and the electromagnetic force. Written for today’s short affair prompt at Section VII.
Summary: In which Napoleon continues to wear three-piece suits in odd places and baffles Illya in the process.
Not cross-posting this because I’m just too lazy rn.
“Napoleon, why are you wearing your suit to the scrapyard?”
“One must always look one’s best,” Napoleon said, cheerily, as Illya rolled his blue eyes heavenward in exasperation.  “We are on a mission, after all—we’re representing U.N.C.L.E., and so I wish to present myself as I would in the office.”
“Napoleon, there is no one else here to see you except the manager of the scrapyard, and the people who run the equipment.  And we won’t even be here for very long—we need to check out something that was found when they were moving the remains of an old car.  You are essentially making yourself look good for that electromagnetic scrap lifter over there, and nothing more!”
“Well, how fortunate, as I am told that I have--”
“…Oh, no…” Illya groaned, knowing what was coming.
“--A magnetic personality.”
The look on Illya’s face was the reaction that Napoleon had been hoping for.
“Why do I put up with you…?” the Russian muttered.
“Because I am irreplaceable,” Napoleon said, running a hand over his hair to make sure it was perfect in spite of the light breeze blowing around them.
“…That, you are…” Illya said, quietly, not intending for Napoleon to actually hear him admit it.
At any rate, Napoleon didn’t react to Illya’s admission; he continued to lead the way to the electromagnetic crane.  Napoleon was certainly getting a few stares from anyone who saw him in his suit, but he didn’t seem to give them a second glance.
Why does he try so hard to avoid being caught in anything but a suit? Illya wondered to himself.
Napoleon didn’t think twice about wearing sweaters or pajamas when they were home; he didn’t care what Illya saw him wear.
Illya blinked as the realization sank in.  Perhaps it wasn’t vanity—at least not entirely, in this case.
For Napoleon, suits represented the outside world, and the pressures upon Napoleon to maintain his reputation as a jetsetter who always charmed his way across the globe with relative ease.
But in the shelter of their home, Napoleon was free from all of that—free to be himself, relaxed and surprisingly content with the simpler things in life (even if he sometimes did daydream about wealth and riches, it didn’t take much for him to snap out of it).
And he so readily shared this side with Illya—and Illya realized that he had been given a great gift for Napoleon to trust him with his true self.
It was a gift he didn’t take for granted, by any means.  Illya knew how fortunate he was—there was always a reminder not too far away.
He allowed the vestiges of a smile to make their way to his face as Napoleon now spoke with the crane operator, who was side-eyeing Napoleon’s suit like the rest of the people in the scrapyard.
Let them think what they may, Illya said.  And let us just hope that Napoleon doesn’t tear that expensive suit on a piece of scrap metal…
They could all do without the reimbursement rigmarole.
