Ghost Riders :: A Compilation

In 2016, Australian label Efficient Space released Sky Girl, a near immaculate collection of gems lifted from small pressings dating from the sixties to the nineties compiled by Julien Dechery and DJ Sundae. Although highly varied, pasting together new wave tones, borderline outsider rock, and haunting folk, Sky Girl is a seamless listen. Six years on, Efficient Space offer their second compilation, Ghost Riders, put together by record collector Ivan Liechti, culled between 1965-1974.

We first posted about the label Efficient Space (Melbourne, Australia) last fall. The label seems to specialize in reissues and they've done just that with this gem from Tresa Leigh (she appeared on last year's excellent Ghost Riders compilation). Leigh was a Georgia teenager back in the 1970s who was determined to record.

These four songs clearly show a talent beyond her years. Listen to that voice and melodies. These are songs that would fit nicely alongside the work of Weyes Blood and Lana Del Rey.

The Bandcamp write-up compares Tresa Leigh to three artists I'd never heard of: Nora Guthrie (daughter of Woody...sister of Arlo), Bonnie Dobson and Patti Whipp.

I bought a chest freezer recently so I can finally indulge my grandma instincts of Make An Unreasonable Amount Of Food For Not Much Money And Eat Of It For Months

Today I bought two rotisserie chickens and made SIX large chicken pot pies (9" pie tins), used the leftover carcasses and have chicken stock going in the slow cooker, with enough leftover chicken meat and veg to make chicken rice soup tomorrow for DnD and probably have quite a bit to freeze as well.

#totaled up everything cost abt $35-40 #including the foil pie tins because i did NOT have that many glass ones #which? for that much GOOD food? im quite proud #coulda done it for less if i hadnt used instant mashed potatoes but it saved enough hassle to be worth it #my family always made pot pie to use up leftovers from a Big Chicken Dinner #bottom 'crust' was mashed potatoes #middle filling was chicken bits and whatever veg we had mixed into the gravy #one crust on top #mom ALWAYS made her crusts by hand #but i decided to just use store bought ones #ive missed pot pie #but my teeny tiny freezers have never allowed for it really #because its most efficient when done in a Fuckoff Huge Batch #and my tiny amount of freezer and fridge space never made it worthwhile before

I had to do a double take on the liner notes for this compilation issued by Efficient Space (Melbourne, Australia). The Mod 4 apparently is a collection of 8th graders - but "A Puppet" sounds so mature. Dennis Harte's "Summer's Over" is a heartfelt song that is the work of a young teenager who was backed by The Left Banke.

I've been caught being gullible before, but if the Bandcamp notes are to be believed then this compilation might be one of the coolest to come out. The vibe of the three songs available reminds me of Beach House and/or Vashti Bunyan. It also reminds me a bit of the excellent Light in the Attic compilation from Kearney Barton's recordings.
