Quote
Tim's father, who died in 1982 of leukaemia, was 32 years older than his wife when they married.    The former naval commander brought up Tm and his elder brother, Jonathan, in the only way he knew - strictly and according to the book. But the family, and especially young Tim, were liked by neighbours.    Mr and Mrs Robin Patchell, who were neighbours in Ightham, Kent, from the time the Laurences moved to the village from their rented home in Edenbridge in 1958, said: "He was so well mannered, so polite and so well brought up. He hasn't changed. Princess Anne is a very lucky woman."

A Guide to Great Days Out in Kent
Kent has a rightful claim to the name Garden of England. The region boasts of a rich landscape of rolling hills and spectacular coastline. It’s also bursting with fertile orchards, lush farmlands, and well-tended country estates. Amidst its stunning natural beauty, you will find historic sites, from medieval castles to idyllic villages to the imposing Canterbury Cathedral. Here is our guide to help you plan unforgettable days out in Kent.
Tumblr media
1. Enjoy the Cricket
Kent’s affair with cricket goes a long way back. Founded in 1842, the Canterbury Cricket Week is one of the most popular cricket festivals in the world. The festival involves a series of home matches usually held during the first week of August at the St. Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.
This year, Kent will be celebrating its 169th cricket week. The cricket week may also include a number of other events such as a beer festival, arts and crafts activities, face painting and performances by live bands. So if you’re a big fan of cricket, attending the Cricket Week would be perfect! You may even want to go see Kent play a 2020 match in 2020!
2. Visit Blenheim Palace and Canterbury Cathedral
Kent boasts of several remarkable sights, but none among them can rival the majesty of the Blenheim Palace. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the Blenheim Palace lays claim to 300 years’ worth of history. Taking this quintessentially English tour will certainly bring a luxury feel to your day out. Its vibrant past is tangible in its gilded staterooms and pleasure gardens, not to mention the assortment of invaluable portraits and tapestries. While in Kent, make sure you also visit the majestic Canterbury Cathedral. Aside from admiring its awe-inspiring architectural beauty, you can also explore and learn about its profound history and significance as a religious symbol.
3. Explore the Lashenden Air Warfare Museum in Ashford
Whether you are fascinated by warplanes or mystified by the science of aviation, this unique and interactive museum is perfect for you. For a minimum donation of only £2, you can tour the main hangar, which exhibits a variety of aircraft, engines, and combat relics.
Most of the collections at the Lashenden Air Warfare Museum are from World War 2, but it also has pieces from World War 1, the Korean wars, Vietnam wars, and the Gulf wars. The museum also showcases prisoners of war artefacts from the Royal Air Forces Prisoners of War Association. For those who wish to relax, the museum has a café, bar, restaurant, and a picnic area on the airfield.
4. Discover Hever Castle in Edenbridge
Famous for being the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Hever Castle’s intriguing history is equalled only by its undeniable beauty. The castle has a stunning interior of panelled rooms that houses elegant furniture, priceless tapestries, and valuable antiques. Its grounds are likewise a delight to explore with its award-winning gardens, statues, fountains, mazes, and a giant topiary chess set. There’s also an English Rose Garden that has 4000 rose bushes and a loggia overlooking a 38-acre artificial lake. Hever Castle has plenty of things for the kids to enjoy. Your little ones can play at the Tudor Towers Adventure Playground and explore its towers, fireman’s poles, and the Acorn Dell, with its willow structure and giant sandpit. During the warmer months, visitors can take pleasure in a variety of fun activities, from witnessing jousting tournaments. You can also take part in the archery tournament or hire a boat on the lake to see the Japanese Tea House Folly.

Sunday, June 2nd, 1940
...We went for a drive along the cliff.  There was a most curious sort of golden haze over the sea, which was dotted as far as we could see with small boats of all sorts and kinds.  They surely can’t be fishing.  Went back to Edenbridge with the Hutchisons.  The news tonight is terrible - what is going to happen to all our men trapped on the beach at a place called Dunkirk and being bombed all the time?
Monday, June 3rd, 1940
No news from Rex.  Couldn’t sleep last night thinking of our men, then became aware of the noise of trains rushing through the night - the railway line crosses a bridge not far from the house.  Wonder what this can be.
Tuesday, June 4th, 1940
Glorious news!  Our boys are coming back from Dunkirk!
Every small ship and boat, private or otherwise, that could cross the Channel has been mobilized to go and rescue our men stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk.  Now we know what those boats we saw were up to!  The noise I heard last night was the trains from the coast bringing them back to England.  Oh, thank God!
Our little maid came in in great excitement to say that all the village is out watching.  I couldn’t stay indoors while all this was happening and found a field not far from the railway bridge where we could watch the trains go by.  The first were hospital trains with dark windows, filled with the wounded, then came more filled with the troops just off the beaches of Dunkirk; just as they had been rescued, battered and torn, utterly exhausted after their terrible ordeal, they still had the spirit to stand in the corridors giving the thumbs-up sign!  They would had just come through Hell still came up smiling!  What a lesson for us all!
I stood knee-deep in buttercups and daisies all day (except for a short break for lunch) crying with pride and joy and waving to them as the trains passed by.  There was nothing else I could do as they never stopped, but at least I could stand there and give them a welcome back to the land they love and try to express as they hurtled by how immeasurably glad we are to see them safe again.  Where they are going no one knows - it is enough that they are home again.
Later we hear as they crossed the bridge notes were thrown out giving the names of the lads of this district to say they were safely back.  There is a most wonderful feeling everywhere.  One would think this was a victory instead of a defeat - and so it is!  They are back to fight again!
Tonight we have heard on the radio more of the epic story.  They came back in little boats manned by civilians, retired navy and mercantile marines, every boat and crew that could be assembled.  These were some of the boats Jane and I saw and that queer haze rising a few feet above the water was a sort of protection to hide them while they were assembling.  And so, backed by one or two destroyers and RAF and under the ceaseless fire of the enemy, through a sea sewn with mines, they made trip after trip to bring our men safely home again.

UK’s Boris Johnson to go up in smoke as bonfire night effigy
LONDON (Reuters) – His political enemies may well like to see him disappear in a puff of smoke and now a small town in England plans to grant them their wish by burning a comic effigy of Boris Johnson as part of their annual bonfire night celebrations.
The flamboyant ex-Foreign Secretary and leading light of the 2016 campaign for Britain to leave the European Union – running shorts, cycle helmet and all – will be torched on Saturday in Edenbridge, Kent.
Dozens of towns and villages in Britain hold firework parties and burn effigies in November of Guy Fawkes, the Roman Catholic plotter who tried to blow up parliament in 1605.
Several have started to burn celebrity effigies in recent years: past Edenbridge victims have included Donald Trump and former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
“Boris Johnson has been near the top of the list for the last few years running,” said Laura Lawrence of the Edenbridge Bonfire Society.
“He does have a tendency to put his foot in it and I think perhaps this year he might have put his foot in it one too many times and that’s why he’s been chosen as our celebrity effigy for 2018.”
The 11-metre (36-feet) high effigy took artist Andrea Deans six days to make. He wears a “90” rosette to mark the bonfire society’s 90th anniversary and is portrayed as having his EU cake and eating it.
“I wanted him to come across scruffy because that’s what he appears most of the time, wearing his suit and a helmet at the same time and you can see him running in really peculiar shorts, that’s why we put those on,” she told Reuters.
“Because he appears like that sort of character and also I think, Boris being Boris, he’ll probably see the funny side of it and I’m hoping that he will even come along on Saturday and maybe bring a cake.”

Where To Go In November – The Best UK Holiday Destinations & Events
If you love wrapping up warm and watching dazzling firework displays, you’re in for a treat this month. As you’d expect, the UK has dozens of firework spectacles and blazing bonfire events on and around 5 November, but there’s so much more going this month too. From film festivals to ice rinks, these fantastic events are well worth booking a holiday for!
Top Things To Do In November
Escape for the weekend to a cosy cottage in Hay-on-Wye, or enjoy a winter weekend away at a city centre apartment in Nottingham. Whatever type of November getaway you’re looking for, Holiday Lettings has got hundreds of rentals to choose from.
Light Up Lancaster
When: 2 – 3 November
Light Up Lancaster invites you to explore this northern city through the imagination of artists, using the medium of light in all its forms. Local and international artists will be rubbing shoulders as they bring their inspiration to Lancaster to create intriguing art and memorable performances across the city. From the most well-known places, such as Lancaster Castle and the Judges’ Lodgings, to hidden gems in secret squares and historic buildings, the artworks will create a whole new experience of the city. On the Saturday, enjoy the festival’s finale as fireworks are launched from the grounds of Lancaster Castle. The display, which lights up the historic landscape and skyline, continues to be one of the finest displays in the north.
Look for a break in Lancaster
Chiddingfold bonfire
When: 3 November
Regularly voted one of the best bonfires and fireworks displays in Surrey (and even the UK!), Chiddingfold bonfire is a family-friendly evening that benefits the whole community. The bonfire is built over a six-week period by village volunteers and lit on the night by torches from a procession of hundreds that starts around 6:30pm. Local teams provide a beer tent, burgers, mulled wine and a variety of food and drink to fill hungry tummies. The fireworks are set off from a secret location and are choreographed to highlight the beauty of the village. Collectors shaking buckets receive donations to help pay for the fireworks, and all profits are given to local charities and the elderly of the village to spend in the village shops.

Edenbridge Bonfire night
When: 3 November
This stunning fireworks spectacular in Kent has been going since 1928 and this year, the event celebrates its 90th year! A carnival of floats and walking parties will proceed through Edenbridge high street before the big firework party at the Recreation Ground. Watch as huge 12-metre effigies of Guy Fawkes – and a special guest celebrity guy – go up in flames, along with a professional fireworks display. Last year’s effigy was Harvey Weinstein… who might it be this year?

Epsom Firework Display
When: 3 November
This huge display now ranks one of the best in the south with the 2018 British Fireworks winners, Illusion Fireworks, choreographing a spectacular display synchronised to music. Other attractions include a large funfair, delicious food and drink, and an impressive bonfire. It’s a great fun-packed night for all the family with this year promising to be even bigger and better than the last! And as there’s a free park and ride service from Epsom and Tolworth stations, and surrounding areas, getting two and from the event from your rental will be a breeze.

Lindfield Bonfire Night
When: 5 November
Bonfire Night has long been celebrated across Sussex and in 1894 the Lindfield set up its own Bonfire Society to continue this tradition. This year’s event is on the 5th November, starting with a fancy dress completion at 6.30pm, followed by a traditional torch lit procession around the village. On the Common the Bonfire Prayer is read followed by a grand fireworks display. The event is free to all, but the organisers ask that if you attend, you donate in the collection buckets on the night to help support local children’s’ charities.

When: 9 – 11 November
Cornwall Film Festival is a celebration of independent cinema. Join us at The Poly in Falmouth for a weekend of UK and International films, Cannes winners and emerging talents. The festival is curated to reflect the theme of ‘Resistance’, catering for connoisseurs and casual film fans alike. The masterclasses, talks, director Q&As and networking events, for aspiring filmmakers and screenwriters, are not to be missed. And as the festival is in beautiful surroundings near the stunning Cornish coastline, a holiday here is sure to leave you feeling inspired.

Abertoir Horror Festival, Wales
When: 13 – 18 November Wales’ International Horror Festival, Abertoir, returns this year to Aberystwyth Arts Centre. It’s a celebration of the best in new horror films and this year, there’ll be a strand dedicated to slasher movies! The festival’s guest of honour will be Sean S. Cunningham, director and producer of the original Friday the 13th. The frighteningly-good festival will also feature films with live musical accompaniment, a horror ‘prom night’ and live comedy from The Elvis Dead: an entertaining show combining the cult horror film Evil Dead II with the songs of Elvis Presley!
