Modern AU head-canons for these Dune characters:
Feyd Rautha
Glossu Rabban
Piter de Vries.
ohh okay this is interesting. I am not really that used to headcannons/ AUs, as I'm honestly new to engaging with fanfic in general so my apologies in advance if it doesn't totally fit, but here are my headcannons and ideas for how I'd do a modern AU with these characters.
Feyd Rautha:
Tumblr media
Feyd Rautha is the heir apparent to a large spice mining company- in this case, you could substitute an oil or mining company for modern AU. The company culture is highly toxic, but Feyd likes that. He's known to churn through interns and keeps a non-existent sleep schedule.
His overall dynamic is finance bro meets basically any character from succession (think a slightly more financially literate Roman Roy). He buys luxury items just to fit in, however he has just enough taste so that it actually works. He considers most of these purchases a waste of money, but also his right and/or part of the job as heir.
As part of the Baron's inner circle, he has knowledge of most of the company's inner workings and takes great personal pride in digging up as much information as possible on the people he doesn't already control. He will often go to conferences and events just to get a read on competition. He secretly longs for someone to take that kind of an interest in him, but no one has just yet- many still think that he's too young and unpredictable to inherit.
After all- there is that rumor that he tried to kill the Baron.
Glossu Rabban
Tumblr media
If Feyd is the more of a Roman Roy, Rabban is Conor. He had ambitions at the company which ended in failure, and has been reassigned to lobbying. Rabban is attempting to trade off of his industry connections to get into politics, if he can. He's aware his current position is tenuous at best and that he might need to make his own career. As the family industry is regulated, everyone basically hates this pipe dream of a career ambition. His moves are too obvious and clumsy, and he often tries to influence someone only to find that Feyd has already discussed the business with them. He's not a total failure, but his family just doesn't appreciate any success outside of financial success.
Piter de Vries
Piter is a math genius that works in data modeling and analytics. The Barron and Feyd love that he makes them money, however he's abrasive personality wise. He's known to use a myriad of drugs recreationally and at work, just because solving the same problems sober is too boring for him. The company has tried to hire assistants that can help him or at least explain his reports palatably, but he insists on doing the work himself and his own data models for fun in C. Not C++, C. The entire department rests on his shoulders and the Baron is weighing if Piter is worth putting up with. He gets the work of a department done on one salary, but also insists on making MILF jokes about lady Jessica basically any time she's within his zip code.
Would love to know your thoughts <3 Thanks for this ask!

“It’s coming. I see a holy war spreading across the universe like unquenchable fire. A warrior religion that waves the Atreides banner in my father’s name. Fanatical legions worshiping at the shrine of my father’s skull. A war in my name. Everyone is shouting my name.”
⤷ Paul Muad’Dib Atreides. Duke of Arrakis. Lisan al-Gaib.
Paul Atreides was born with two formidable birthrights: the noble lineage of his father, the Duke, and the occultist legacy of the Bene Gesserit, a fanatical religious sisterhood, through his mother. From his early childhood, he was groomed to wield power and was trained not just as a Mentat for his analytical intellect and intuition, but also in the mysterious ways of the Bene Gesserit, whose bloodline manipulation and intense training granted him extraordinary abilities. He not only possesses the art of prescience, which grants him glimpses into the future—a power that both empowers and burdens him—but also wields The Voice, the ability to persuade and command someone with an order.
Now, on the desert planet Arrakis, he seeks vengeance for the brutal massacre on his family and uses the Fremen, the planet’s indigenous people who believe him to be their prophesied messiah, to wage his war against the Imperium. As the prophet Lisan al-Gaib, he leads the Fremen with an iron fist and leaves the rest of the known universe in fear and terror of him and his millions of fundamentalist followers.
“He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, truthless, less than a god, more than a man.”
(OOC: Paul’s portrayal is primarily based on the two latest movie adaptations by Denis Villeneuve, but also on Frank Herbert’s novels Dune & Dune Messiah. // 21+, mdni, english preferred, muse =/= mun ‼️ I do not support or celebrate Paul as a white savior. Dune works as a critique toward western exploitation, colonialism and white saviorism, which will be reflected through my portrayal of Paul as well)

Something out there, Something right here - Al Haitham
Author Notes: This one is really quite short and I'm honestly nervous about posting it since the last Al Haitham fic did surprisingly well. Far better than I had expected in truth. But here it is anyway, another Al Haitham fic because he's kind of fun to write. Reader is gender-neutral as per usual.
Type: Fluff/romance implied/
Word count: 400
Tumblr media
I looked over, watching as Al Haitham rose from his mat and started to leave the ring of light cast by the fire. His shadow danced across the sparkling sand and I found myself following after him.
He didn’t go far before he stopped, just outside the light so that he was standing alone under the darkened but starry sky. Despite my largely soundless approach he caught on to my presence rather quickly and twisted.
His head turned so that I could see his profile illuminated by the flicking gold of the firelight. It added a small bit of warmth to his almost statuesque form.
I swallowed dryly as I came to stop behind him, “Can’t sleep?” My voice sounded impossibly quiet to even my own ears, but he heard me.
Responding with a hum, he looked back out across the seemingly endless desert. “Pondering something,” He at last spoke, answering my question and I frowned slightly at his words.
I stepped forward till I was standing next to him, looking out across the same view he gazed at, “Something out there?” As soon as I’d spoken he was looking at me.
I shifted under his uniquely analytical gaze awkwardly. It was strange, feeling like I was suddenly the only thing he saw. The focus of his entire attention.
“Somewhat,” His reply startled me and I looked over at him, my eyes catching on his and immediately stopping there.
Such strange yet beautiful eyes. Green like the infinitely tall trees of the forest, but also orange like this desert’s seemingly endless sands that hid its incalculable mysteries.
Something silent hung in the air between us. Something unspoken that might best remain unnamed.
I inhaled, steading myself, “Is it something you can dig up out there, or is it a question that needs answering?”
His lips twitched at my question, a slight smile appearing on his face as if he were amused. And perhaps he was. This comfortingly familiar yet largely unknown man.
He glanced back out towards the endlessly rolling dunes, “Hard to say. It might be out there,” He paused and looked back towards me, those multi-colored eyes flashing with something unspoken. “And it might be right in front of me.”
I blinked, my eyes going wide at his words and an almost smug smile curved across his face just before he spoke again, “We’ll just have to see.”

I have decided (for fun) to write an analytic essay about unadaptable books (and media in general but mainly books) but also books labelled as such that have been successfully done even if tangentially so. I currently only have two for the latter and none for the former and would like some suggestions to include.
The two I have are:
The House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski - partly adapted (themes, plot points, ambience and playing with the medium adapted but not the exact story) as myHouse.wad (https://youtu.be/5wAo54DHDY0?si=ixlZ_S7Naz6cWWXQ) - Trust me on this as it is deceiving
Dune by Frank Herbet - The recent Dune films as well as the Lynch film as some context to the labelling of unadaptable
Thanks for any help.
this is the shit I would usually go to reddit for but could not find a suitable subreddit as r/books just auto deleted it. Also reblogging would help get as many opinions and ideas from different corners of Tumblr as possible
Thanks again

LAST rambling post before I go touch some grass. but re: dune and also re: talking to my mom about kairos (which is a much better book than dune. for the record) I do think more and more that the problem is that 'good' literature has characters and events and concepts that express tensions and contradictions. that this allows thematic and analytic subtlety that's impossible otherwise. but that when you try to analyze this in the framework of "is this guy good, is he bad, does herbert think the lawrence of arabia in space is cool and good" you just like cannot do it because like you would hope it expresses some tensions internal to the way empire attempts to use and control subjects who also have their own goals which may not look straightforwardly like "overthrow their occupiers" even though yes I do think overthrowing your occupiers is good.

Sooo I was tagged by @nanomooselet (sempai noticed me ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) no but really woooow a person with so much such cool trigun meta knows I exist? I’m literally starstruck)
But I’m stupid and I don’t know who to tag in return :( I’m not even sure I know how to see who I’m mutuals with? I’m a technological granny that’s all anyone needs to know about me lol
But the questions are actually different:
Last song: Not Found by Buck-Tick. That’s a great song, I kinda forgot existed and actually expected to listen to Mudai (which means “No name”, so, it’s not that weird to confuse the two).
Favorite color: green. Deep moss green is the best, but any hue is great.
Currently watching: ugggh. Thanks to my husband I watch ongoings now ( >___>) they are suddenly really good. Everybody knows Dungeon Meshi, I think. It’s already a cult classic as a manga and Trigger continues to make history. I’ve juuust finished Frieren and Apothecary Diaries, Bucchigiri and Warumono San no kyuujitsu, Yubisaki to renren and Majyo to Yajyu. Have started Yoru no kagame wa oyogenai (PLEASE WATCH IT. JUST FOR THE CINEMATOGRAPHY ALONE! PS - god I love the way anime of this new decade uses “camera movement” and colors. Tengoku daimakyo and Chainsawman are probably the best examples here, but this slice of life/music dramedy already looks amazing) and Shyuumatsu no train wa doko e iku (this is boringly simple in the art department in general but the promise and the visualization of the surreal parts is really good, I’m hooked!). Gmg. I do watch movies as well, like, Poor things and Aliza Frankenstein are extremely good. Dune is very beautiful. Mami Wata is a black and white gem of a movie. But I think I should shut up already.
Sweet/savory/spicy: savory I guess? However I’m not a native English speaker and had to google for some time as I’ve previously considered savory not a taste, but… a feel? Dunno.
Relationship status: married. As for friendship, it’s mostly online as most my beautiful ladies live far away ~_~
Current obsession: Trigun. And. Like. Really. It is an OBSESSION. I love all the characters, I literally fall asleep and wake up with them on my mind. I’ve made myself a felted Vash toy. I’ve watched Stampede twice (don’t look at the number of things I watch. Without my husband I can’t finish shit. But this! I’ve screencapped every second of it it seems. I’ve read manga in English and Japanese (and sometimes badly translated to Russian for the lulz - there’s so much swearing it’s basically a different story). I’ve committed two art pieces for the first time in my life. I’ve put art on my walls and my laptop. And I even returned to reading fan fiction after almost a decade of staying away from ao3 (no shade here, I just never loved anything as much as to need any additional materials. Except for Hannibal. But that show was too perfect and didn’t need anything but deep analytics on the symbolism). Hmh. I want to plug “Becoming Eden” by Lenipes here. It’s so good it has become a fourth trigun “canon” for me.
Last thing I googled: how does savory taste lol
Hehe. That’s so long. I guess I just wanted to vent a bit?
Who can I tag? @6wings-manyeyes @esotericbird
Sorry to bother you. No pressure and all that~ just a little tag game to get to know mutuals better.

I started my day crying as I washed my face and put moisturiser on because I was thinking about Paul Muad'Dib and I realised I am the very person you were warned about for feeling too much empathy for the bad guy.
No seriously, I think the idea that empathy is 'dangerous' is itself an incredibly dangerous idea, because with it follows implicit suppositions that, a) empathy misguides your analytical judgement, b) empathy is an inhibition which cannot be overcome, c) the very presence of empathy is damning (ergo, some emotions are just inherently bad), e) by virtue, the presence of lesser or no empathy makes a given judgement 'more logical', (this is damning for the following reason), f) the usual gender stereotype that women feel empathy too much and this broadly inhibits them as a class, and as such the usual audience brought into criticism on this topic - ceaselessly - is female readers/filmgoers, whereas when we are brought to draw on 'empathy' for the poor rapist whose life was ruined by one 'mistake' (e.g. B/rock Turner), empathy is eminently and urgently necessar (to consequently excuse the fact he is a rapist).
No empathy for the victim, of course; naturally this entire model has a vested interest in protecting the status quo, not ever truly challenging anything (empathy is not transformative in any way here) and to not feel empathy for such a criminal is a moral failing (as a consequence of gender: women need to feel bad for rapists). But irrespective of that, 'true' empathy is clearly useful and moving, but it is not the complete picture (nor really the solitary path to justice). From the perspective of narrative, it is actually a task you have to take up. It's still incomplete and not representative of your entire judgement, because it is not clouding, but it is supplementary or indeed even gives you the foundation (the starting point) for your opinion (and relatedly does give system to moral virtue, but that is neither here nor there).
Hard to lay out all of that when the catchy thought-terminating cliche, 'if you felt empathy for them, you missed the point' just makes it an easier time for everybody to make a list of bad guys you're not supposed to even feel a little bad for or understand the point of personality cult and where Paul chafes against that or actively cultivates it or anything. Of course, we know the Good Guys because when you feel bad for the Good Guys, they're instaforgiven and always good, and the Bad Guys are always the Bad Guys who turn to the camera and tell you not to feel bad for them. (To be fair, Paul comes close to this in Dune Messiah. I'm referring to the Genghis Khan line. Iykyk).
Really the ultimate takeaway is that empathy is not the endpoint. It doesn't decide ultimate moral judgement. It is not aberrant to 'logic' and the capacity to recognise another person's perspective and feel something for them and consider their motivations expands your judgement - and your sense of humanity. The folly, to me, is to think there are Good People and Bad People and only Bad People do Bad Things and ever think Bad Things. In this sense the Good People are 'pre-forgiven'; empathy for them is okay because they probably had a good reason to do it and if you already can feel bad for them, it's basically the same thing as it being okay. This weaker model of 'empathy' is fucking bizarre and a tool of tyranny, and in storytelling is the death of sensible analysis. (I also think this model of moral apology is actually why people are so fucking stupid about redemption arc discourse because they have no concept of apology and atonement).
The gender comment wasn't meant to be an aside, because it's not lost on me that this policing on whether it's okay to like a bad guy worms its way into major feminine audiences and when I see male fans casting judgement it's almost always on female fans. No one cares if you like Darth Vader but maybe you got made fun of for quoting the Joker too much. 'He's literally me' over Patrick Bateman (a textual serial killer) is just boys being boys (and missing Patrick's pathos for the sake of edgy self-insert). But does anybody give a fuck about that? Not really, no. I don't think it's sufficient to make a gender commentary and just stop there, and that's not really my preferred style. Because yes, whilst I think that is a motivation here, I do think there are some even deeper movements at play with social marking and delineation in online communities [which gender can service] (e.g. I like the bad edgy characters/you are a villain apologist who likes them the wrong way) which does express itself as harrassment and bullying (it's schoolyard shit, but you encounter this in many walks of life). Fans policing other fans, fans with the 'correct' interpretation above all others which gives you license to make it very clear You Are One of the Good Ones. It's the shibboleth of fandom now: whether you like villains the Good Way or the Bad Way.
The irony is not lost on me that this typology actually reflects the naïveté of the very narrative interpretation I'm describing, and relatedly I think this is why it is genuinely an ongoing and necessary point which needs challenging. There are not People With the Correct Beliefs and People With the Incorrect Beliefs (who only have them because they are bad and evil). Sometimes you might even have the wrong ones. The capacity to reflect on that is actually very necessary. It is seriously necessary.
But then once you get into it, does liking Paul Atreides necessarily reflect real-life apologia for real-life conquerors? Rather the question I ask is, does it open up conversation for that sort of apologia? Because I think that's the question Paul's character is more interested in than just asking you to recognise why he does bad things. There is something a little more complex which isn't putting a judgement on you for empathising: it's using that empathy as an exercise. It's narrative.
That conclusion doesn't substantially matter though because the fandom discourse is always going to be more rooted in bipartisan opinions and the easiest, laziest interpretation (Paul is a self-insert power fantasy/Paul is actually a conqueror you shouldn't like at all, just as an example - insert any other villain where needed) which makes you sound the smartest. Note how long this post is. I wanted to lay out my opinion on the matter with respect to empathy with an attempt to restrain it to the context of storytelling, and it's much too long. It's easier to digest neat little soundbytes and I'm pretentious or whatever.
Paul's a fucking great character, and I can understand why Villain Enjoyers default to this position instead of what I've laid out here. It's easier that way.
I'll end this post with: I hope they adapt Dune Messiah into a film. It's my favourite Dune book.

NewsNation just aired their one-hour interview with David Grusch (the whistleblower and 14-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force as an intelligence officer). Some big takeaways from Grusch's claims:
Non-human intelligence (NHI) bodies have been recovered
“Well, naturally, when you recover something that’s either landed or crashed … sometimes you encounter dead pilots and, believe it or not, as fantastical as that sounds. It’s true,” Grusch said.
Some UFOs were “football-field sized”
“A lot of them were very large, very large, like a football field kind of size,” Grusch said.
The 1947 Roswell Incident was likely a real non-human craft incident
He also made stunning claims that go back to the famous Roswell incident. At the time, there were multiple witnesses who said there were bodies recovered from the alleged Roswell aircraft.
“You might want to trust some of these witnesses,” Grusch said.
...
Most believe that the Roswell incident has been thoroughly debunked. In fact, the Air Force published a report in 1994 to put the issue to rest once and for all.
Grusch has read it.
“That analysis they did was a total hack job,” he said. “I mean, even anybody with analytical skills … if you read it, you can deduce that they’re completing multiple situations crash test dummies and movable dunes. They (the Air Force) is just saying that the townsfolk who personally witnessed it were totally imagining things. They concocted that whole report just to disinform.”
The U.S. Government is actively suppressing and obfuscating this info
Grusch believes there is a “sophisticated disinformation campaign” in the United States with regard to nonhuman life and aircraft.
Human governments (e.g. the U.S.) may have standing agreements with non-human intelligences
Grusch has written an internal document about his discoveries that refers to “agreements that risk putting our future in jeopardy.”

Books to read
So, last post I talked about books I want to read/books that are on my list.
1. Rise and Ruin by Leigh Bardugo - Currently, I am working through the Shadow and Bone trilogy. On a long flight the other day I finished Siege and Storm and I am already 100 pages into Rise and Ruin.
2. King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
3. Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo - Need to read the duology focusing on Nikolai (tbh he is the only real reason I keep reading Shadow and Bone lol).
4. Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert - I want to finish the second DUNE before the movie comes out in November.
5. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - Trust me, the Crows books in the Grishaverse are on the list. However, I will put those on hold for a while, because my bestie is practically begging me to read ACOTAR. Not certain how far I will get in those books, as there are like 5 or 6 books and all are like 400 page, but I will try.
6. The Secret History by Donna Tartt - Gift from my friend for Christmas, and it looks like the perfect autumn read.
7. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - I think I might read this a bit sooner, as I associate books heavily with seasons, and this seems like a perfect spring and summer book. Eventually I want to read Emma as well.
8. The endless collection of J.R.R. Tolkien books I have - finish the Silmarillion, Beren and Luthien, The Fall of Gondolin, The Fall of Numenor, Tales from the Perilous Realm.
9. I also neeeed to finish Game of Thrones.
The issue with my reading habits is that I lose steam - I will have a great non-stop reading weekend, then I get distracted by a different book or a different project. This list could take me 5 years to get through honestly.
Another thought - I would love to give my takes on these books. I’m by no means a reviewer, but being more analytical about these fantasy books could really help me develop my own writing and ideas.

Hunter and Duncan Idaho
As someone who has neither read Dune nor watched much of The Owl House (yet), please tell me I´m not just seeing things when I point out the similarities between Hunter and Duncan Idaho.
Both ...
keep getting brought back as the in-universe equivalent of a clone
do not remember their previous lives (except Idaho remembers his original one)
are being brought back by a person who is attached to them
gain additional powers over the course of the series
are being manipulated by outside forces
play a role in the downfall of the person that keeps bringing them back. (Hunter with Belos, Idaho with Letho II)
the latest version of them breaks the cycle in some way
I´m not nearly enough of an analytics geek to talk about their narrative roles, not to talk about the fact that Dune and The Owl House are completely different stories, but ... yeah.

Been thinking a lot about the monopoly of Hollywood and how it has been limiting the creativity of media and thus media literacy. This isn’t meant to be a shame-post, I’ve just been pondering it and its potential consequences from an analytical standpoint, as one who loves movies and the emotions they draw out of us.
And I find myself comparing it to, of all things, Dune. Specifically the Golden Path that Leto implements from Children of Dune going forward into God-Emperor of Dune. The way humanity is deliberately and systemically oppressed and reduced into as small a box as possible, until finally, it breaks, and there’s a great outward explosive energy of exploration and creativity.
I doubt that’s the end goal of monopolies like Disney, but I’m starting to see a similar effect on Hollywood media. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when the box finally bursts open.

Dune Twitter Account Compromised, Hackers Promote Fake Airdrop
Dune Analytics' official X account fell victim to a security breach, resulting in unauthorized activity. The compromised account was exploited to promote a fraudulent Dune airdrop campaign. The breach persisted for a duration exceeding 90 minutes, during which the fraudulent airdrop post remained visible for approximately 15 minutes.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of online platforms to cyberattacks and underscores the importance of robust security measures. The unauthorized use of Dune Analytics' official account to disseminate false information poses risks to users who may inadvertently engage with fraudulent schemes.
While the breach was relatively short-lived, its impact on trust and credibility can be significant. Users may question the integrity of information shared through official channels and exercise caution when interacting with similar announcements in the future.
In response to the incident, Dune Analytics is likely to review and reinforce its security protocols to prevent future breaches. Additionally, the platform may communicate with users to alert them of the unauthorized activity and advise on ways to verify the legitimacy of announcements. This incident serves as a reminder for organizations to prioritize cybersecurity measures to safeguard both their platforms and users' trust.

Sudden Plummet of Solana's Price Amidst Crypto Market Turbulence
Investigating Solana Network’s Transaction Failures On April 4, Dune Analytics revealed an alarming surge in failed memecoin transactions on the Solana network. More than three-quarters of such transactions did not go through, marking the highest failure rate on record. However, Mert Mümtaz, CEO of Helius and a proponent of Solana, refuted the 75% failure figure, attributing the bulk of these…
