For the majority of the past few years, Wilcox and Menlo-Atherton have been two of the top public high schools when it comes to football. The two teams met in the CCS Open Division Championship back in 2018 when the Bears stormed back to win 33-28, outscoring Wilcox 19-0 in the fourth quarter. Read more at svvoice.com

"You and I Have Begun to Blur"
This is eating my brain from inside, so here's the thing: one of my favourite aspects of Hannigram as a ship is their balance - the way they mirror and complete each other, functionally two halves of the same whole; but what is even more fascinating is that, in a literary sense, Hannibal and Will are, in fact, inspired by two opposing aspects of the same man.
It all begins (like many other things) with Lord Byron; specifically, the summer he spent with a group of friends at Villa Diodati in Geneva, and the dare, that each member of the group would write a ghost story - one of which was Dr. Polidori's The Vampyre. This novella, which introduced the vampire legend to Western popular culture, defined its archetypes for centuries to come; and as such, Polidori's Lord Ruthven, who was based on Lord Byron, became a blueprint.
He is dark, foreign, seductive, dangerous, hypnotizing, hedonistic, possessive; his relationship with the main character, Aubrey, is markedly homoerotic - and these qualities endure as the archetype is passed down the generations. From Ruthven, we get Carmilla, Dracula, Lestat - and, indeed, Hannibal Lecter.
From this:

he is still, recognizably, a Byronic villain. Whether he operates within an overtly supernatural genre, or a psychological thriller, he is still confident, dominant, manipulative, and always representative of forbidden (queer, interracial, extramarital, etc) desire and temptation.
However, The Vampyre was not the only piece written for the same dare, not the only piece that left a legacy within popular horror, and, most importantly for this context, not the only piece that featured a Byronic character. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein introduced a second such archetype into the gothic genre - inspired by her own understanding of Lord Byron; so, while her Victor Frankenstein shares the same dark hair and pallor as Polidori's Ruthven, there is an ocean of differences between the two.
Victor Frankenstein is a Tortured Genius. He is odd and wild, passionate, prone to isolation; a misfit from the start, always lonely despite the few connections he has, and never truly understood. His intellect is both a gift and the source of his ruin, and he is plagued, in equal measure, by both pride and guilt.
In both looks and character, he passes almost unchanged - from this:

Even centuries later, he is still the smartest man in the room, he is always tormented, and his counterpart is always a Monster. We see him pop up throughout horror media - as poets, composers, detectives - reflected in Edgar Allan Poe's Roderick Usher, Lovecraft's Henry Wilcox, or Spencer Reid of Criminal Minds. Unlike those of Ruthven's lineage, these people are usually either frail or sickly, socially awkward, uncertain of themselves except for a specific area of expertise, and their sanity commonly tends to be in question.
Despite such differences, though, all these characters are Lord Byron's legacy, weaving their way through history - on the page, on the stage, on the screen, it matters not. By the time they meet again in NBC's Hannibal, they are as separate as two entities can be - yet entwined more closely than any other genre would allow.
Frankly, it drives me feral.
There is so much here to unpack - they are a whole, and yet separate, each with his own archetypal history. Does something within Will Graham's bones remember Frankenstein when he stands in the forensic lab, surrounded by corpses?.. On the Doylist level, does that inform the acting - however subconsciously - in any way?.. Does Count Hannibal Lecter have Lord Ruthven's smile - or Lord Byron's?.. Does he know?
How much is reality?
How much is fiction?
How much is lost through interpretation? How much is remembered? How much does anyone ever really Know us, truly, when two of Byron's closest friends saw entirely different people in him?
I don't know. We can never know. What is evident, though, is that Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham are two halves of the same soul - and that this soul aches to be complete.

word count: 1940
pairing: Brian Wilcox (Fast Food Nation)/Reader
summary: Brian thinks you're such a prude. Always flinching when he spits into the burgers. Not just a prude, you're a coward for not telling him to stop.
OR
Reader has an obvious spit kink, and Brian's perspective is hard to work with.
Brian thinks you're a prude for flinching and looking away every time he spits in a burger. Not just a prude, a coward for also not telling him to stop. It's like you disapprove, but you don't have the guts to tell him to stop.
You continue to quietly work alongside him, looking away whenever he spits onto a burger and rubs the bun over the patty to get an even layer of spit all over it. He grins as he does so- it's his one point of pride against every stuck up asshole customer that raises their voice against the cashier. Whenever he looks at you and snaps, asking if you're judging him, you quickly look away and mumble an apology, and he continues to glare at you, before shoving the order out and letting the cashier on shift know that the order is ready.
Brian is inattentive, but he's not slow. He notices that you only flinch when he spits in the burgers. When he doesn't wash his hands while handling food, you barely bat an eyelid. When a frozen beef patty falls on the ground and he tosses it onto the grill, you continue working without giving it a second look. When he accidentally squirts mayonnaise on the counter and swipes it up with a finger to slather it under the bun (arguably a worse infraction than the spitting), you simply continue working. It confuses him at first. How come you only get nervous with the spitting?
Realizations do not dawn upon Brian. They do not come to him in slow puzzle pieces of recognition and a singular answer. They come like starfall and the hot oil from the deep fryer, and an all-encompassing roar in the jumble of his mind.
To his credit, it hits him when he spits in a burger, and you look away with a sharp inhale. He's about to ask you what the hell your problem is, when his glance lowers, and he sees your legs awkwardly crossed together, along with an uncomfortable look on your face. It leads to him realizing that this whole time, you were-
"What?" he snaps, though the question is addressed more to himself, as if in disbelief that he did not notice it sooner.
"Nothing- nothing! Go on!" you shakily say, and abandon your station, off to do another mundane task at breakneck speed.
Brian smirks to himself, an awful, wide smile that rarely shows on his face. He was rarely offered the upper hand, and now that he had it, he would abuse it until it was rubbed raw. It's ridiculous in hindsight, how he did not notice it sooner. What he perceived as your judgment wasn't actually judgment at all, you were staring in yearning. His disgusting little act, an act he saw as defiance, was one you perceived as dominance in a more carnal aspect.
The rest of the shift passes by normally, and you eventually drift back to his side, appearing to forget the earlier incident. You continue to slap meals together and push them out at a languid pace, and he keeps an eye on you.
You're not very good at hiding your skittish nature around him. You're nervous around Brian that would indicate that you thought he was going to kill you if you misstepped around him, or, well, had a crush on him. Brian always assumed it was the former, he knew how intimidating he could be, even in the silly yellows and reds of his shitty condiment-stained customer service outfit. He's still tall, imposing, with dry-from-dye black hair and an indifferent look on his face. But you try to be innocently affable around him, an attitude he normally dismissed as you being friendly. The spitting, however, hints at a more perverse side that you're hiding.
A side he does not mind coaxing out.
He spends the rest of the shift wondering if you're thinking about him. Are you hoping he spits on your cheek? On your face? Even in a burger? Brian allows himself to get lost in that fantasy. Making a burger just for you. Bun, lettuce, tomato, patty- ahh. He would make a disgusting noise at the back of his throat, and hock a large glob of spit, right onto the bland patty. A viscous seasoning of his own. His train of thought gets the better of him, and he imagines what other bodily fluids you'll happily eat on that burger, why doesn't he just drop his pants and add a healthy dose of-
"Brian?" a voice snaps him from his thoughts, and startled, he turns to his side, to see you. You look hesitant, as if you didn't want to interrupt what he was thinking about, and oh, it's a good thing you interrupted him, he didn't trust where his thoughts were about to lead him.
"End of the shift already?" he asks hoarsely, and you nod.
Brian shrugs off his uniform in the locker room with ease, an annoying second layer that presses over his dark clothes. The smell of the fryer clings to his casual clothes, and he scoffs to himself, and digs through his locker for some gum. The end of a shift always leaves the taste of the kitchen in his mouth, and gum helps him get rid of it.
You're the one with a bit more difficulty with the uniform. You're trying to get the strings on your apron to cooperate with you. You nearly ask Brian for help with the strings, but you keep your mouth shut, you don't want it to come off as a coy suggestion. So you struggle with the strings as Brian pops some gum in his mouth, chewing and watching you.
At last, you manage to squirm out of the uniform, and you shed it off to reveal your own clothes with a satisfied sigh. Your own clothes are a touch brighter than his, he notes, trying to not think about how your sigh sounded, what other sounds he could eke from your throat. He chews his own gum thoughtfully, before realizing he's staring at you.
"Gum?" he asks, deceptively casual. He holds up his box of gum, showing he has a few sticks of gum left. You turn to him with a noise of surprise, and nod with excitement.
"Open up." he says, a slight command to his tone, and he revels with the mindless obedience you display, opening your mouth and slightly sticking out your tongue with an 'aaaah'. There's a curl to the edge of your lips, a smile as you wait for him to unwrap a stick of gum and toss it into your mouth. Brian is inadvertently reminded of a dog waiting for a treat, with you in complete obedience, or a pornstar, in those magazines he keeps under his bed.
Brian smiles, while chewing his own gum. If he had any shred of decency, he would have asked for permission, he would have apologized for what he was about to do, hell, he wouldn't have done it at all.
But Brian Wilcox is not a boy with a shred of decency.
Brian takes a step closer to you, and you falter slightly, but keep your mouth open. Obedience keeps you rooted to the spot, keeps your mouth open. He doesn't have a shred of decency or obedience in him.
An annoyingly sentimental side of him wants to cup your cheek, to make this moment a little more special, but he risks you ruining the intimate moment and pulling away, and he's testing his boundaries as is by simply stepping closer to you. Whatever he's going to do, he has to do it fast.
So in one quick motion, Brian spits his chewed-gum into your mouth, along with a generous amount of spit. To anybody that came up behind him, it would have looked like a tender kiss shared between coworkers after a tense shift, but it is anything but.
You feel Brian's spit and gum hit your tongue, and immediately, you recoil, and your face flusters, going into a deep red.
You cry out as you look up at Brian, and it looks like you're about to scream, so Brian immediately reacts by slapping his palm over your mouth. He allows himself a moment of uncertainty, that maybe he misinterpreted the signs from earlier, that maybe you think he's a complete fucking freak, and that you're definitely going to report him for harassment and assault, and that he accidentally ruined what was a good mutual respect between you and him.
But he swallows that down, and lets a veneer of confidence wash over him- the same kind of confidence that lets him spit into each burger. He looks into your eyes, and starts to talk. He can't tell what you're feeling, your eyes are wide in surprise from his gesture, but your lashes are fluttering, and he's not sure if that's a flirtation, or if you're blinking in Morse code to tell him to go fuck himself.
"Hey, hey, ssh. Seen the way you look at me." he whispers, and he feels like one of those animal tamers, trying to soothe a wild animal.
"You're gonna be good for me and keep my gum in your mouth, right?" he continues, and uses his thumb to stroke the side of your cheek, a placating gesture. He's seen couples in school do this, so it's gotta work on you, right? And it does, like magic. Even under his greasy fingers, you seem to nearly go limp, your eyelids grow heavy, even with his palm over your mouth. You give a slow nod.
"Not gonna scream or do any of that shit?" he asks, and tries to negate any panic in his tone by asking it like an order. You shake your head, and it's sickening, how Brian feels this power over you. He's just spat in your mouth, and you let him. Your pupils are blown wide, looking at him, and some primal aspect of Brian recognizes it as lust, an emotion he's never had directed towards him.
He pats the side of your cheek in a condescending gesture, and lets go of his hand over your mouth. True to your word, you don't scream. Even better, your jaw slowly moves, chewing the gum he spat into your mouth. Brian finds that he likes it.
You're far- very far from the prude he initially imagined you as. If you were, you would have spat out his gum and the spitglob onto the floor the second he let go of your mouth, dainty hands splayed over your mouth and trying to get his taste out of your mouth. You make a small face, he recognizes your tongue swirling at the side of your cheek- and his eyes widen, realizing that you're actually chasing the taste of his spit over the flavored gum, swirling it around your mouth.
You make a small swallowing motion- Brian greedily imagines that it's his spit going down your throat. You continue to chew his gum, and look up at him in silence.
"Good job, doll." Brian mumbles, looking at you. He heard it once from a porno, with a macho buff guy complimenting a buxom girl after she'd performed a sexual act and swallowed something of his. Brian doesn't think he's a macho guy, but with the way you're looking at him, he feels like you see him as one. A heady rush comes over him, a much more intimate sense of power than the first time he spat in a burger as defiance.
"Good job."

"The world's smallest violin really needs an audience, so let me play my violin for you..." (x)

New Origin of the Pixies chapter today!
Chapter 43 - “Letters and Numbers”
Read on FFN || Read on AO3
Start from Chapter 1
---
Since Sanderson came into his adult wings last chapter, it was only a matter of time before his younger coworkers did too. Tensions rise as Longwood and Smith begin to assert their dominance, and H.P. does what he can to ensure his position as Head Pixie remains secure.
Next time we see these kids, we'll be off to war...
(First 1,000 words under the cut)
---
Letters and Numbers
Spring of the Yellow Tailfeathers
---
Longwood hovered by the tram station, his shades pushed into his hair and his arms crossed. As I drifted up to join him, I raised an admittedly exaggerated brow. "And you're absolutely sure you don't want me to call your Refracted counterpart?"
"I am."
"You realize that after today, you can never enter a Daoist shrine again. Without her kiss as a juvenile, you're impure. Your window of opportunity will have closed. If you ever want in again, you'll have to travel to the High Kingdom and meet on her territory."
"I get it, H.P." He smiled thinly. "I'm Zodii. I'm all Zodii."
I suppressed my sigh. "All right. No ceremonial coming of age kiss. Well, if we're not going to be spending the evening witnessing a dance, I'm glad we're going out instead." I picked up my coat and pulled it on while Sanderson watched from the stairs. "Where do you fancy? Preferably someplace with soda."
Longwood sized me up with a rueful sideways glance. "H.P., I'm 164,000. Adult wings or not, I can't legally drink for 25,000 years."
"… Right. I knew that. So where do you want to go? Hawkins and I went hiking, and Wilcox and I spent the weekend soaring above the cloudlands as geese. You and I have to go somewhere- anywhere you want. A getaway for just the two of us. That's Pixie tradition."
"I want to go to the Leaves Temple and present myself before Thurmondo."
Oh. I wrinkled my nose. "Um. That place by the Frozen Garden Palace? That's what you want? Am I even allowed to go there?"
Longwood nodded. "You're allowed to be on the lower two levels. The echo chamber is on the top floor. H.P., I know you don't believe, but I want you to come and meditate with me. That's my birthday wish."
I watched his face for any hint of ulterior motives. "What exactly do you plan to do while I'm there?"
"Just pray, and think, and listen. It's the Temple of Curiosity. It's sort of a play area up front for the nymphs and pups, and more of a museum in the back. Lots of little puzzles to fiddle with and solve. You'll like it."
"Okay. If that's what you want." I glanced over my shoulder. "Sanderson, you're in charge. No parties."
"Yes, sir."
We took the pilgrimage without magic as best as we could. I would've been content to ping there and be done with it, but Longwood insisted on the trams. At least using magic on the way home wasn't against their self-imposed rules. Longwood and I arrived in Cornflower City on Wednesday, then paid the temple a visit in the morning. I'd glimpsed the temple in passing: lush plants that betray the frosty outdoors and all of that. I'd never been inside before. Longwood walked me to the door. We entered together.
The noise hit me first. Longwood led onward and we stepped from the hall into an enormous brightly lit room.
"Holy chaos…"
Everything was a puzzle. The floor. The walls. The tables and chairs. Puzzles of cloudland cities. Puzzles of the Rainbow Bridge. Puzzles of famous monuments. Puzzles of planets. Puzzles of farms, animals, factories…
I turned a full circle, sliding my hands up to grasp my hat. Mazes of wire. Mirrors that alter your appearance in nonsensical ways. Children's toys strewn all over the ground (Ah, so that's how the Zodii lure you in young). Fairy nymphs and Anti-Fairy pups raced and poofed back and forth, shrieking and chortling as they zipped from one place to another. Amused parents sat on benches along the walls.
Longwood looked at me, awaiting any further reaction on my part. "If it's too much, sir, on the other side of the room, there's a door that leads into the meditation hall. It's quieter there."
I squinted. There was laughter, and crying. Bright construction paper. Train sets with engines and tracks. Interactive wall panels. Tunnels. Slides. Climbing bars. Trampolines. Squishy blue mats. Ringing rainbow xylophones. Spinning hoops. Wooden blocks. Sports balls. Foam balls. Toy blasters to fire those foam balls. Adventure quests and target games you could work your way through with a pretend wand in hand. Scoreboards?
It was every doctor's office waiting room, playground, splash pad, nymph gymnasium, and socializing nursery I'd ever imagined contained under one roof. My awareness zinged in a thousand directions at once, trying to track every rapidly moving kid, shot ball, and thrown toy. Every toenail, every hair, every dust flake, every skin cell.
Howls of pain. Bruises? Blood? Snot? Barf? Pee? There was no way to know what wild kids did when ducking through the tunnels and enriching themselves where adults couldn't see them. I am almost positive everything in there was liable to give you some contagious disease at the simplest brush of your hand. Nothing in there was sanitary. Nothing in there was safe. It wasn't right.
"Longwood," I whispered, "I can't do this. I can't stay in here. Nothing in here is organized. I'm going to have a meltdown. In front of all these people."
"Really?" He looked again around the Temple. "I thought you'd like solving the puzzles and filling in the coloring sheets."
"I will. Oh, I will. Longwood, I'm glad you have the ability to focus on just one thing at a time. To set up just three of a hundred dominos, to rotate a wheel filled with beads just half a turn, to flip an hourglass over when it hasn't timed out, to roll a play cloudcar a short ways across the floor, and then move on with your life."
I met his gaze, tugging my hat lower. "But if you start me on this, I swear I am not leaving until every one of these puzzles is done at the same time, and stabilized that way. And I do not care how many nymphs or full-grown adults I have to bowl over to do so. Either let me absolutely loose, or get me out of here- now."

The JQ Connection
Part Two
Part Three
Had a thought today about Joe’s different movies and shows and how many of his cast mates have been in films/shows that are special to me, I grew up with, and/or really enjoyed. It’s almost like a Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon but with Joe and then I thought it’s as if all roads were leading to him before I even knew who he was(I know this sounds mental believe me but he makes my brain mush 😂) I decided to do a fun thing (and I’m bored) and went through all his cast mates (or they starred in the same show as him even if they didn’t work with him) and wanted to share the many things they have worked on that hold a special place in my heart. 🥰
Djimon Honsou

Sinday headcanon - kinks, turn ons, safe words deep dive ( this also applies so him when he's an adult )
Tumblr media
Kinks - out of his sisters, Tyler Anthony Atlas is the kinkiest out of the three siblings. He has experienced a lot due to the fact he spent a good majority of his college life sleeping around (being safe of course) and simply learning that his partners (men and women) need to feel just as much pleasure as him. Tyler is mainly a dominant person but has no problem playing the submissive, he'll always ask his partner what they want him to be or allow switching roles to happen in the moment during sex or even foreplay. Moving onto kinks, the list is as follows but there are more, here is a blanket cover with brief explanations:
BDSM
Sadism and masochism
Ropes and bondage
Voyeurism
Exhibitionism
Orgasm control
Food play
Impact play ( usually he does only spanking, but if the muse is okay with paddles, belts etc. He'll use those as well )
Toys ( mainly used with female partners, yes he does have a small collection of vibrators dedicated to female partners )
Car sex
Kitchen sex ( obviously )
Praise kink
Turn ons - Tyler is a natural flirt, that's a given and we're not denying that. However, what turns him on usually leaves him stunned or caught of guard and at a loss for words. Even though he is kinky, his turns are rather simple and are based off of physical things that he observes and notices about a person.
Form-fitting clothes on a female
A clothing style that either reflects his own or is the polar opposite of his own.
Partner having honest, good reactions to his food. i.e; humming, or little moans when eating
necklaces that fall just below the collarbone
chains (directed towards males )
rings ( both men and women )
laced gloves ( only with Jenna Wilcox @anomalouss )
Red bottom heels
fierce personality and confidence
innocent personality but not to be mistake with naive
skirts and dresses
athletic attire ( men and women )
uniforms ( any type, cheerleaders, football players, service members etc. )
exclusive scents that remind him of his partners

A decade ago, New York City launched a campaign to combat teen pregnancy. It featured ads on buses and subway cars that read: “If you finish high school, get a job, and get married before having children, you have a 98% chance of not being in poverty.”
That advice, more popularly known as the “success sequence,” is often credited to research done by Brookings Institution scholars Isabel Sawhill and Ron Haskins, though others have made similar observations. In his recent book, “Agency,” Ian Rowe of the American Enterprise Institute writes that the message “has attracted many admirers because of the simplicity of the three steps that young people, even if born into disadvantaged circumstances or raised by a young single parent, can themselves control and take in their lives.”
The effort nevertheless faced significant backlash from detractors who accused then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg of stigmatizing teen pregnancy and pushing a “moralistic, conservative agenda to revitalize marriage,” Mr. Rowe writes. Mr. Bloomberg’s successor, Bill de Blasio, ultimately abandoned the effort. Public moralizing has since fallen further out of favor and been replaced by a kind of self-congratulatory nonjudgmentalism. In today’s New York, you’re likely to see ads for free syringes and directions to “safe” injections sites for junkies, even as drug overdoses have reached record levels.
We could use more of that moralizing from public officials, whether the issue is solo parenting, substance abuse or crime. The success sequence works to keep people not only off the dole but also out of trouble with the law. High-school graduates and children raised by both parents are much less likely to end up in jail. “Virtually every major social pathology,” political scientist Stephen Baskerville writes, “has been linked to fatherless children: violent crime, drug and alcohol abuse, truancy, unwed pregnancy, suicide, and psychological disorders—all correlating more strongly with fatherlessness than with any other single factor, surpassing even race and poverty.”
America’s crime debate tends to focus on so-called root causes, such as joblessness. But it’s worth remembering that the sharpest increase in violent crime began in the 1960s, a decade that saw low unemployment, strong economic growth and a doubling of black household incomes. As notable, labor-force participation rates of young black men fell during the 1980s and ’90s, one of the longest periods of sustained economic growth in U.S. history.
A new academic paper from the Institute for Family Studies doesn’t deny that economic conditions play a role in criminal behavior. And co-authors Rafael Mangual, Brad Wilcox, Joseph Price and Seth Cannon write that “changes in law-enforcement and the prosecution of criminals have also had a hand in the recent uptick in violent crime in American cities.” The paper’s main argument, however, is that family instability may be the biggest factor of all and that it’s not receiving the attention it deserves.
“Cities are safer when two-parent families are dominant and more crime-ridden when family instability is common,” the authors write. Nationwide, the total crime rate is about 48% higher in cities “that have above the median share of single-parent families, compared to cities that have fewer single-parent families.” Even when controlling for variables such as race, income and educational attainment, “the association between family structure and total crime rates, as well as violent crime rates, in cities across the United States remains statistically significant.”
Having a father around, the authors note, is about more than an additional paycheck. Fathers teach their sons responsibility, self-control, how to carry themselves, how to treat women. They tend to be more effective disciplinarians, and their involvement in childrearing is linked to positive outcomes in the academic development of their children, “especially in mathematics and verbal skills.” That finding “has been established for both sons and daughters but, unsurprisingly, it is especially pronounced among boys. The presence of married fathers is also protective against school suspensions and expulsions, as well as the risk of dropping out of high school.”
Between 1960 and 2019, the percentage of babies in the U.S. born to unwed mothers grew from 5% to almost 50%. “Shifts from the late-1960s to the 1990s away from stable families have left some cities, and especially some neighborhoods, vulnerable to higher rates of crime, especially violent crime,” the study concludes. “We need to realign material and cultural incentives in our cities to favor marriage and stable families, not undercut them.”
We all know single mothers—some of us even may be related to them—who heroically beat these odds and raised children that have gone on to lead productive lives. The public-policy goal should be to reduce the number of people who will have to face those odds. And that means calling out behavior that is objectively harmful to people and society in general.

Study: Stronger Families, Safer Streets: Exploring Links Between Family Structure and Crime
Executive Summary This Institute for Family Studies report finds that strong families are associated with less crime in cities across the United States, as well in neighborhoods across Chicago. Specifically, our analyses indicate that the total crime rate in cities with high levels of single parenthood are 48% higher than those with low levels of single parenthood. When it comes to violent crime and homicide, cities with high levels of single parenthood have 118% higher rates of violence and 255% higher rates of homicide. And in Chicago, our analysis of census tract data from the city shows that tracts with high levels of single-parent-headed households face 137% higher total crime rates, 226% higher violent crime rates, and 436% higher homicide rates, compared to tracts with low levels of single parenthood. We also find that poverty, education, and race are linked to city and census-tract level trends in crime. In general, in cities across America, and on the streets of Chicago, this report finds that public safety is greater in communities where the twoparent family is the dominant norm.

Not everything needs to be normalized or destigmatized.
The problem with the discussion around addressing social issues is that many people only want to do the politically virtuous thing, not the harder, more politically difficult thing. They want to shout, "defund the police!" But they don't want to do anything that would actually facilitate a reduction in the need for police.
What this tells us is that they don't really care about actually solving it, they just want to be seen to care about it. Indeed, if it was resolved, it would be politically inconvenient, as they'd no longer be able to posture around it.

THE GEORGIAS BRACKET: SEMIFINALS
Tumblr media
The time has come to decide our finalists. The winners of these polls will represent their respective half of the bracket, and determine who the Fan-favorite Georgias player is. (or at least, the Fan-favorite as far as the people on Tumblr voting in this bracket are concerned).
Our final four candidates are all Georgias OGs from the Expansion Era, including Rigby Friedrich (one of the league's all-time best performers), Niq Nyong'o (arguably the most important player in our lore), Flattery McKinley (a magnet of misfortune that caused many of our most memorable stories), and Neerie McCloud (who spent so long Elsewhere, her name pretty much became synonymous with it). (More in-depth summaries are on the poll posts themselves.)
If you want to bring your favorite to the very end, then don't forget to #Vote!
But first, some Semifinals Statistics!
Both Rigby Friedrich and Niq Nyong'o dominated their respective polls, getting 77.1% each out of 35 votes, and leaving Randy Dennis and Frankie Hambone in the dust! Will they be able to keep this momentum going all the way to the finals? Or is this their final hurrah before they get taken down by more formidable opponents?
You know who didn't dominate their respective poll? Flattery McKinley, who only narrowly beat out Fish Summer with 51.6% of the vote, officially marking the closest poll of the entire event! This was also the poll with the most votes, getting 64 votes total.
The final four players are, in fact, seeds 1-4, showing I probably did something right with my seeding process.
As always, anyone is allowed to participate in voting, whether or not you're familiar with the Georgias (or even Blaseball in general). Just vote for whichever player you like more in each pair, and winners will progress to the Semifinals! And don't be afraid to do a bit of campaigning for your favorites, if you feel like it.
You can find all matchups under the #georgias bracket semifinals tag on our blog, or in the list below:
Rigby Friedrich vs. Neerie McCloud
Niq Nyong'o vs. Flattery McKinley

REFEREES 24, GOLDEN BEARS 17
NOTRE DAME BENEFITS FROM SOME KEY BAD CALLS TO ESCAPE CAL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – The announcers repeatedly referred to it as “the luck of the Irish”, but let’s call it what it was - horrible officiating that may have cost the California Bears a huge upset win over Notre Dame in South Bend.
The Irish, who started the season ranked No. 5, watched the Bears jump out to leads repeatedly, but kept benefitting from momentous calls that went their way.   Their coach couldn’t really praise their performance on its own merits, but was just glad to escape with the win.
"They found a way to finish," First-year coach Marcus Freeman said. "I'm proud of those guys. You know what, it is hard to win football games. It's hard. You've seen it. It’s hard.”  Not much of a vote of confidence in the team’s actual performance.
The biggest officiating controversy of the game came early in the second quarter.  Cal was ahead 7-0 (would have been ahead 10-0 but the previous field goal attempt bounced off the upright) and had done a dominant job on defense, stopping Notre Dame’s first decent drive of the game.  The Irish had to set up for a difficult field goal shot from 46 yards and their kicker missed the attempt.  This would’ve given Cal the ball back with fantastic field position and their continued momentum would probably have led to another score.  But instead, a late flag came out (after the missed attempt, it should be noted) amazingly for offsides against Cal BEFORE the snap - meaning a Bears player supposedly lined up offsides.  And the number of the player called was not even on the field.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Zaksheske from Outkick weighed in on the controversy: “Cal was not offsides. They were not even close to being offsides. While missed judgment calls are part of sports, this was baffling. It wasn’t like someone jumped and then jumped back and it was close. Cal lined up perfectly legally. No one moved. Yet a very late flag was thrown. It was a brutal call that left Cal fans wondering “what might have been.” This probably won’t make them feel any better — and arguably they’ll feel worse — but the ACC has apologized for the mistake, according to ESPN. And, they’ve suspended the official who made the call.”
Tumblr media
Of course they didn’t.  Acknowledging the error public would be admitting they probably cost Cal the game.  Why?  Because the missed field goal and loss of possession became a 1st and 10 with great field position for the Irish, all thanks to the fraudulent call.  And on the subsequent play, Notre Dame scored a touchdown.  So a 7-0 Cal lead that could have potentially turned into a 14 point lead (Cal scored another touchdown on their next possession) the score was tied 7-7.  And that 7 points was what won the game for the Irish.
The Golden Bears scored on the ensuing possession and took back the lead, but another inexplicable penalty was called against Cal receiver J Michael Sturdivant after he caught the touchdown in the end zone.  He stood up and put his hands up towards the sky in celebration.  Amazingly, that minor show of excitement (and much less than the overwhelming majority of college players do when they score) drew an unsportsmanlike penalty for “excessive celebration”.  Bears coach Justin Wilcox was beside himself.  And it gave the Irish an additional 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff.  They would go on to score a field goal, which arguably they would not have reached without those extra yards.
"It's gut-wrenching. We had chances to win. Too many errors. One or two more plays," Wilcox said, being careful not to mention the bad calls and officiating.
Cal was playing so well against the vaunted Irish that the South Bend fans were booing their own when the Bears retook the lead in the second quarter.  Loud cheers of "California!" could clearly be heard, as Cal’s defense made stop after stop.  Notre Dame was able to finally get some momentum going in the second half, finally pulling ahead for the lead in the 4th quarter.
But despite the “luck of the Irish” going against them, the Golden Bears did not quit.  In fact, the game wasn’t over until the very last play.  On fourth-and-13 from the Notre Dame 35, Cal's Jack Plummer threw the ball into the end zone. The ball bounced off several players and Bears receiver Jeremiah Hunter nearly pulled it in, but the ball fell from his grasp.
It was a familiar feeling for the Bears, who had five losses by seven points or less last season.
Notre Dame starting tailback Chris Tyree said the entire game was excrutiating to watch when he was on the sidelines.
"They almost gave me a heart attack out there, man," he said. "It's really exciting football to watch, especially when it goes down to the wire like that.”
Plummer said the Bears were planning to go for two instead of an extra point if they had scored.  “We just wanted to get the win and get out of there” rather than going to overtime, he said.  Unfortunately, it was not to be.  Instead of a 3-0 start and a huge upset win over mighty Notre Dame, they had to go home and watch Sports Center say how the game had been stolen from them, and settle for the ACC giving them a non-apology for a blown call, while suspending the ref that committed it.

"Nevertheless, the system persisted, and without basic changes. For all the public clamor and widespread dissatisfaction, parole survived relatively unscathed. How could failure and unpopularity have had so little impact on the continuity and structure of policy? The answer is to be found, first, in the functions that the program did fulfill for several types of officials within criminal justice. The day-to-day advantages that they gained from administering the system far outweighed (for them) its apparent defects.
The most vigorous champions of parole, those who gained the most from its operation, were the prison wardens. Their support was critical to the survival of the system and it was unwavering, despite some gradual diminution of their authority over parole decisions. Before 1925, wardens dominated the parole boards. They usually served as one of the three members; the meetings were held on their grounds, at the prison; and at least at the start, the inmate’s record of institutional conduct probably counted for most, if for no other reason than as a carry-over from the time when parole was defined as a reward for the good inmate. After the mid-1920’s, however, the parole system built up its own bureaucracy. It became more independent of the department of corrections and moved away from the warden’s direct control. He no longer served on the committee, the final decisions were more frequently made in the state capital, and institutional behavior ranked well behind an inmate’s prior record in importance as a release consideration.
As Warden Lewis Lawes of Sing Sing told a New York investigatory committee:
‘I have never attended a meeting of the Parole Board. I have never been requested to. . . . I did attempt at first to make a good warden’s report and recommendation; but when I found they didn’t read it or pay any attention to it I will admit my efforts became very perfunctory.’
The Wilcox study in Pennsylvania found that “good conduct in prison does not inevitably lead to parole, nor do minor disciplinary infringements always prevent release. Eighty percent of those paroled at the minimum had perfect prison records. But it is also noteworthy that 80 percent of those refused parole had maintained good conduct in prison.” And the Attorney General’s survey cautioned that
Parole should not be used as a device for solving some of the problems of prison administrators. Prison administrators . . . are liable to employ it as a good time regulation or reward rather than as a correctional device.
Nevertheless, wardens had good reasons to continue to support the program and to resolve in their national meetings that parole was “an essential element in protective penology.” Some of them did manage to keep the boards under their sway: in such states as New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New Jersey, the warden still had the most to say about who went out on parole. In many cases, too, a warden could persuade a board to take into account his own prejudices in any one particular instance. Hence, the following dialogue in the Montana parole board meeting:
Case of Fred Albo, a Mexican, was considered. The Clerk read the history. Governor: Hold him I think. Secretary of State: Go to it. Attorney General: It makes no difference if he is a Mexican. Clerk: The Warden hates Mexicans and recommends him. He must be a good man. Governor: All right, don’t hold him.
(One cannot be certain, of course, whether the warden was very impressed by this inmate or whether he simply wanted to get rid of a noxious Mexican.)
More important, whatever the boards assumptions about the significance of the prior record, the warden could thwart the opportunity for release for any especially troublesome inmate. Boards would not pay attention to minor infractions or necessarily release someone who minded his own business inside. However, the inmate who was far out of line would suffer, and wardens as well as convicts understood this. Wardens, or their principal keepers, were very often present throughout board deliberations; but at any rate it was they who made up the dockets and so they had ample opportunity to tell the board about the bad cases. In Pennsylvania, for instance, the inmate who “carried coffee from the mess hall, cursed an officer, refused to enter his cell, and stole and drank shellac,” did not win release at the minimum. In effect, wardens had a veto power, and their ability to blackball was sufficient to serve their own disciplinary ends well.
“Complex and difficult as is prison management under the best conditions,” insisted one Indiana official, “it would be immediately more difficult without the parole law. The prisoner looks upon the parole as the reward for good conduct and steady industry and does his best to earn it.” Or, as Pennsylvania’s Wilcox concluded: “The power possessed by the state under parole laws . . . provides penal administrators with a club which is even more effective than the old ‘good time’ laws in inducing internal discipline. Prison managers generally favor parole for this reasons.
Moreover, wardens found themselves locked into the system once it was in operation. They were compelled to favor its perpetuation for the critical reason that any talk of a diminution in the availability of parole (let alone its outright abolition) provoked substantial inmate hostility - and wardens did not enjoy suppressing riots. Under indeterminate sentences, any effort to restrict parole had to mean significant increases in time served. Almost invariably, then, wardens were eager to see more and more paroles granted to keep peace among the inmates. Joseph Moore, chairman of the New York State Board of Parole, complained that wardens were directing inmates’ anger at parole boards and away from themselves. “The Parole Board finds it advisable to hold a large percentage of prisoners beyond their eligibility for release and we have abundant evidence that prison officials disapprove of this. Unfortunately, this feeling whether purposely or not is conveyed to the prisoners and it is permitted to be a general idea among them that so far as the prisons are concerned they would be glad to release them but the hard-boiled Parole Board holds them up.”
In much the same way, the warden of the penitentiary in Washington State kept up a running battle with parole board members. Because they were (in his view) too strict about release, his own job of preserving good order was more difficult. In fact, the warden “usually placed about five or ten men on the Docket who had served a long time, but who had no present chance for release. Why? Because when a ‘con’ has put in a lot of time and is denied any chance for a hearing before the Board, resentment occurs, and if there is enough of that, trouble occurs inside.” That same warden resisted all efforts to abolish parole for three-time losers: “Such prisoners could not be controlled . . . [and prison administration would be impossible.” The warden of the Illinois State Penitentiary at Stateville, to choose one case from many, knew the truth of that argument first-hand: in 1937, responding to a newspaper crusade, the parole board cut back on releases (granting only 3 from 274 applications), and in short order the warden had to contend with a hunger strike. Or, to turn the point around, the warden at Charlestown, Massachusetts, consistently recommended parole “because he expected it to improve discipline. He proved correct in his anticipation as there has not been a riot or outbreak in State Prison since parole went into effect.” In sum, the wardens were parole’s warmest friends. They supported the system and were eager to keep the numbers granted parole as high as possible - always excepting that cult case which had to be made into an object lesson.
Legislative committees investigating parole found the wardens’ conclusions not only well-taken but almost unanswerable. No matter how critical they were of one or another part of the system, they were reluctant to restrict release procedures for fear of undercutting prison officials’ power. The New York Crime Commission, a tough group with little good to say for parole, moved very cautiously for fear of disturbing the wardens’ authority. Not only the wardens but representatives of the state parole board took pains to inform the Commission just how critical parole was to discipline. “It is your opinion,” Senator Caleb Baumes, the chairman of the Commission, asked the head of the parole board, “that you create and maintain a better morale, if you please, amongst the prisoners generally, if they know that system is in vogue?” To which the chairman replied: “Absolutely.” The Commission accepted the argument, and as eager as some of its members were to abrogate the board’s right to release inmates immediately at the minimum, they did not dare do so. “If you tell 3,000 men in the prison,” concluded one of the most law-and-order-minded members of the Commission,
that they are likely to be held from months to five or six years more, you will make a hell on earth of every prison in the State. . . .3000 men expect . . . from all the years of practice by the Parole Board . . . that they will be released at the end of the minimum, and if you tell them that now it is likely or probable that their time will be extended beyond the minimum . . . they are going to insurge and feel vicious, and you can not blame them, no matter how heinous was their original offense.
His conclusion was clear: “If we are to go ahead on any rough and ready method of extending sentences and taking that definite hope away from them, the consequences will be extreme.” True, public opinion (and his own instincts as well) would prefer to “make them serve indefinitely.” But “we cannot do it without smashing prison discipline.” It was this kind of reasoning that helped to preserve parole, no matter how poor its reputation or inadequate its practice.
