Back in September 2021, Big Tech cowered in the face of Russian government blackmail and shut down SmartVoting, an app designed to offer Russian voters alternatives to the ruling party, United Russia. While it was possible that Google and Apple had received threats from the Russian authorities, their silence when questioned was cowardly and damning.
It's time for Big Tech to finally do something positive and block all Russian attempts to stifle the two remaining open platforms available: YouTube and Telegram. Since Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, most social media was shut down, including FaceBook and Instagram. Any criticism of the war is punishable by at least 15 years in prison. Independent media in Russia has been wiped out.
Putin cannot be allowed to spend 2024 propagating lies about his failed war. Outlets such as YouTube, where many Russian opposition channels exist, will be crucial to exposing the lies and crimes that Russia's establishment wants to hide. Big Tech should support free speech and use all means possible to frustrate Russian censorship and reject Russian blackmail.

Gorbachev's marriage, like his politics, broke the mold
Gorbachev’s marriage, like his politics, broke the mold
2022-09-03 01:02:18 Mikhail Gorbachev was laid to rest Saturday in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife, Raisa, with whom he shared the world stage in a visibly close and loving marriage that was unprecedented for a Soviet leader. “They were a true pair. She was a part of him, almost always at his side,” then Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany said at Raisa’s funeral in 1999, where…

Moscow (The Times Groupe)- Russia’s journalist Dmitry Muratov has auctioned off his Nobel Peace Prize medal for a record $103.5 million to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine.
According to Heritage Auctions, which conducted the sale on Monday night in New York, all proceeds will benefit UNICEF’s humanitarian response for Ukrainian children displaced by war.
At an auction in 2014, US scientist James Watson’s Nobel medal was auctioned for $4.74 million.
For his defense of freedom of expression in Russia, Muratov was co-awarded the 2021 peace prize.
Among the founders of the daily, he was known for his critical take on Russian politics and society.
After Moscow launched its war against Ukraine in March, it was forced to suspend operations.
“The most important message today is for people to understand that there’s a war going on and we need to help people who are suffering the most,” Muratov said in a video message released by Heritage Auctions.

Nobel peace prize Dmitry Muratov: Propaganda is war itself
Nobel peace prize Dmitry Muratov: Propaganda is war itself
How it turned out that for the first time in the history of mankind, itself and life on the planet depends on the wish and will of one man? The president of Russia, who has a red nuclear button in his jacket pocket or in a suitcase or next to his desk. How did we arrive at a broken future with an endless stream of refugees and already 12 million people? And to the equally endless exhumations of…

Navalny, 47, one of Putin’s most visible and persistent critics, was being held in a jail about 40 miles north of the Arctic Circle, where he had been sentenced to 19 years under a “special regime”.
In a statement, the federal penitentiary service for the region where Navalny was incarcerated said that he “felt unwell after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness”.
Navalny’s family and friends said they were still trying to confirm his death independently. Speaking at the Munich security conference, his wife Yulia said: “I don’t know whether to believe the terrible news that we’ve received only from official media … we cannot believe Putin and his government.
“But if it is true, then I would like Putin, his staff, his friends, his government to know that they will be punished for what they’ve done with our country, my family and my husband. They will be brought to justice, and that day will come very soon.”
Navalny was last seen by his lawyer on Wednesday, who said “everything was normal then”.
Dmitri Muratov, the editor of Novaya Gazeta, told Reuters that Navalny’s death was “murder” brought on by his mistreatment in prison. Mikhail Fishman, a journalist, blinked back tears on the TV Rain channel as he said: “We must learn to live with this news somehow. But we understand the scale of what has happened, that we will mark this as a before-and-after moment.”
