LANYON QUOIT! Once tall enough for a horse and rider to pass beneath, Lanyon Quoit is Cornwall’s most recognizable and prominent megalithic site. The immense capstone, weighing more than 13 tons, originally sat on four upright stones until a thunderstorm toppled it in 1815. The site was resurrected nine years later with money raised by locals; it remains standing today.
PENTRE IFAN! The most popular and best-preserved megalithic site in Wales, Pentre Ifan is a remarkable burial chamber with a 16.5-foot capstone delicately poised on three upright stones, dating roughly to 3500 B.C. The stones here come from nearby Preseli Hills, the same source for some of the boulders at Stonehenge, 150 miles away.
CHÂTEAU DE QUÉRIBUS! This isolated castle in the south of France is known as the last stronghold of the Cathars, the heretical Christian sect active in the 12th-13th centuries in western Europe. Visitors can drive almost to the top of this peak in the Pyrenees, then continue on a steep 10-minute walk to the castle entrance. Visitors must present a health pass before entering the Château de Quéribus.
DEVENISH MONASTIC SITE! Founded in the sixth century, Devenish is the most prominent of the many island church settlements dotting Lough Erne, two connected lakes in Northern Ireland’s County Fermanagh. Since its founding, Devenish has survived a Viking raid and a fire before it flourished in the Middle Ages as a parish church and priory. After taking a short ferry ride from Point Trory, visitors can explore the ruined Augustinian abbey with intricately carved sculptures, and then climb the hundred-foot-tall round tower for panoramic views.
PEYREPERTUSE CASTLE! From this perch on a limestone cliff in the French Pyrenees, the vantage point of the Château de Peyrepertuse allowed Cathars to control the mountain passes and send communication signals further south to the Château de Quéribus. These days, the 13th-century site hosts a contemporary art and music festival in the summer. Adult visitors must present proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative test to enter.
SACRA DI SAN MICHELE! This ancient abbey built in the 10th century on top of Mount Pichiriano offers sweeping views of Turin and the Val di Susa in the Piedmont region of Italy. The main Church of the Sacra, which dates to the 12th century, is the final resting place for members of the House of Savoy, one of the oldest royal families in the world.
LAKE BAIKAL! Local legend says that a deity lives on this rocky outcrop along the western shore of Siberia’s wind-swept Olkhon Island. It’s one of the most sacred sites for the indigenous Buryat people who practice shamanism and Buddhism around Lake Baikal, the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
METEORA! Second only to Mount Athos in significance for Orthodox Christians, Meteora was established by monks in the 11th century on almost inaccessible sandstone columns in central Greece. Only six of the original 24 monasteries remain in this UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the fourth-century Byzantine Church of Virgin Mary, one of the country’s oldest.
SKELLIG MICHAEL AND LITTLE SKELLIG! Sometime between the sixth and eighth centuries, ascetic monks withdrew from their monasteries to pursue a greater union with God on the Skellig Islands, located about seven miles off the coast of County Kerry, Ireland. Although the monks moved back to the mainland in the 13th century, the islands continued to lure pilgrims for centuries. Besides their historical and spiritual significance, the Skelligs are considered one of Ireland’s most important sites for breeding seabirds.
MENHIR OF SAINT-UZEC! Along the GR 34 hiking trail that snakes the coast of Brittany, France, a Christianized menhir, or an upright stone, dedicated to Saint Uzec stands next to a chapel of the same name. The 17th-century Neolithic block weighs 60 tons and depicts carved images of the Passion of Christ. Its original function remains unknown. Guided tours require reservations.

~The Legend of Icarus~
The legend of Icarus is a very famous story but only a very small amount of the story is wildly known.
Daedalus (Icarus’ father) was a very talented Athenian craftsman who build the infamous Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete near the kings palace at Knossos to imprison the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster that was born of his wife and the Cretan bull.
Daedalus was imprisoned by Minos in the Labyrinth after giving Ariadne (Minos’ daughter) a clew (a ball of string) so that she could help Theseus, an enemy of Minos, to survive the Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur.
To escape the Labyrinth, Daedalus managed to create two sets of wings for himself and his son, that were made of feathers glued together with wax. Daedalus tried his wings first and taught Icarus how to fly before warning his son to not fly too high, which would cause the wax to melt, nor too low, which would cause the feathers to get wet with sea water.
Too excited to fly, Icarus flew too close to the sun, resulting in the wings to melt, leaving Icarus to flap his wingless arms. This caused Icarus to fall into the sea, resulting in his death by drowning.
Daedalus wept for his son and called the nearest land Icaria, an island southwest of Samos, in memory of him. Today, the location of his burial on the island bears his name, the sea near Icaria in which he drowned is called the Icarian Sea and the island’s airport is named Icarus Airport.

Icarus’ story has been interpreted by major writers including Chaucer, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Milton, and Joyce.
In the Orion Fountain at Messina, Icarus is one of many figures associated with water; but he is also shown on the Bankruptcy Court of the Amsterdam Town Hall – where he symbolizes high-flying ambition.
The 16th-century painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, was the inspiration for two of the 20th century's most notable English-language poems, "Musée des Beaux Arts" by W. H. Auden and "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus" by William Carlos Williams.
Other English Poems referencing Icarus are "To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Triumph" by Anne Sexton; "Icarus Again" by Alan Devenish; "Mrs Icarus" by Carol Ann Duffy; "Failing and Flying" by Jack Gilbert; "It Should Have Been Winter" by Nancy Chen Long; "Icarus Burning" and "Icarus Redux" by Hiromi Yoshida; and "Up like Icarus" by syllabic poet Mark Antony Owen.

There has been many studies on Icarus’ myth and there has been many interpretations.
In psychology, there have been studies of the Icarus complex (first used by Henry A. Murray to describe a particular type of overambitious character). Icarus complex symptoms in mania can be seen as being fond of heights, fascinated by both fire and water, narcissistic and observed with fantastical or far-fetched imaginary cognition.
Seth Godin's ‘The Icarus Deception’ points to the historical change in how Western culture both propagated and interpreted the Icarus myth arguing that "we tend to forget that Icarus was also warned not to fly too low, because seawater would ruin the lift in his wings. Flying too low is even more dangerous than flying too high, because it feels deceptively safe."
This myth is mostly known due to its coined term: “don't fly too close to the sun".

Game of Thrones country
We were on a quest to a spooky place, deep in the countryside. Night was closing in. Malign forces were messing with our satnav. Or were we just out of signal?
The clammy Northern Ireland mist did not help. Now, what did she say? First on the left, and turn right? Or right, then first left?
A little bewildered huddle of true devotees, caught in our headlights, was the give-away. They stood at the entrance to the ancient tunnel of entangling beech trees. This is the Dark Hedges. one of the prime stops on the Game of Thrones circuit.
I would love to have been in the car with the HBO location scouts when they first set eyes on this eerie and magical spot. Today millions who will never come here, and the thousands who do, will know it as the King's Road, where Arya is captured in Season 2, episode 1. Everybody else need only marvel at it as a famous landmark, planted 300 years by the Stuart family to mark the entrance to Gracehill House.
The Dark Hedges was the appropriate place to end the first day of our Game of Thrones-themed Northern Ireland tour. We began in Belfast, 60 miles to the south, where they film interior sequences for the series in one of Europe’s largest film studios. It stands next to the Titanic Belfast, opened in 2012 as the province’s first big 21st Century tourist attraction, to commemorate the city’s great ship building history, and the ill-fatted vessel built here.
Game of Thrones is an international TV phenomenon, and it has the budget to film at strange and wonderful locations anywhere it pleases. It has found them in Iceland, in Croatia, in Spain. But it is the castles, woods, lakes, forests, mountains and moorlands scattered across the four corners of the six counties, that keep drawing the production team back to Northern Ireland.
This is the travel phenomenon of our times. Only New Zealand, promoting the locations where Lord of the Rings was made, can boast as much film-generated tourism.
Let me confess. I have never seen a single episode, or read a word of George R.R. Martin's fantasy novels on which the series is based. And I don't think it matters a jot. So even if you know nothing of Sansa and Littlefinger, of Jorah and Tyrion, and can’t tell the Sept of Baelor from the Frostfangs, follow the tourist board’s copious directions to Game of Thrones locations, and you will still take in a powerful mixture of landscape, little ports, wide sandy beaches, and ancient buildings, just as they are, free of fantasy.
Driving north out of Belfast, our first destination had been Glenarm. This is one of the string of drowsy little ports on the east and north coasts, sheltering under the Antrim Hills. On our visit all was still, save for a single seal patrolling the little harbour. The beautiful 18th Century walled garden in the grounds of Glenarm Castle was a bonus. They gave us the famous Northern Ireland warm welcome in Steensons Jewellers, where they make the brooches for the series.
Just to the north is Cushendun. This pretty village was once the terminus for the shortest ferry crossing from Scotland (14 miles). Today much of it is in the care of the National Trust. It was designed by architect Clough Williams-Ellis in 1912. He has his own link to TV fantasy, as the creator of Portmerion in N Wales, the setting for the perplexing series The Prisoner.
On the north-facing coast, Game of Thrones filmed on the immense empty beaches. Portstewart Strand and Murlough Bay are wide and golden, but Downhill, an endless sweep of sand stretching all the way to the Foyle Estuary is the leading lady - it is Dragonstone in the series. There is space for an army of fans. even in high summer.
Nowhere is far away in N. Ireland. A drive of a few hours drive took us to the deep south west, to County Fermanagh. Game of Thrones came filming in Pollnagollum Cave, recently designated as part of the UNESCO Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. We skipped the subterranean darkness and played our alternative Game of Stones, tracking down the C6th (two-faced) Janus stone in a quiet churchyard on Boa Island. Our most spectacular find was the C12th round tower on Devenish Island at Enniskillen.
Best of all were the mighty views from the hills above Lough Erne, which is as wide and beautiful as any water in the Lake District but so little known. Sheltered among the mountains, it was the ideal safe base during the war for the RAF Catalina flying boats that protected the Atlantic convoys. On our last day we drove back the east coast, to the quiet countryside 30 miles south of Belfast, around the foothills of the Mourne Mountains. Inch Abbey is not far away. Magnificent and empty among the intense green hills below Belfast, it was our last stop. They filmed Rob Stark’s camp here. But, for once, fact trumps fiction. The abbey had a role in the real life Game of Thrones. Who reduced it to a ruin? Our very own Henry VIII.

Have you ever heard of Devenish Island? I only had briefly. Arriving here earlier this week, I was truly blown away. Devenish Island is in Lough Erne in the lakelands in Ireland's northwest. To get there, I was picked up by water taxi from @LoughErneResort - after driving through amazing scenery in a golf buggy, to a remote jetty on a peninsula! Monks lived on the island in the sixth - yes, the sixth - century, so there's a monastic site, round tower, cool ruins and the rest of the island is cows grazing. You can only get here by boat.
