18 life lessons I learned from my grandma
Words cannot encapsulate the amazing life my grandma had. She began performing as a concert pianist at age 5(!) with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and instilled her fierce love of music, people, and learning in all of her descendants. Always polished, posh, and put together, she was someone from an age when red wine was an acceptable substitute for water. She passed away on the first night of Hanukkah last month at age 96, after a long and exquisite life. In her spirit, I published a modified version of the eulogy I gave at her memorial service. Words cannot encapsulate her life, but I tried.

Some time ago, 2 or 3 years now, the Detroit Zoo rebranded the Arctic Cafe, which has been the primary food court since the Arctic Ring of Life exhibit was put in however long ago now, as Table 28. 28 referencing the fact that the zoo was first opened to the public in 1928. I hadn't been there since that had happened, I had heard about it, but the goofy ass covid restrictions under Big Gretch pushed us towards the Toledo Zoo for about 3 years in a row. What can I say, Ohio has a republican governor. So we went to the zoo about a month ago, and lunch was on our to-do list.
First off, I don't necessarily love the self-order kiosk thing. That to me reeks of lingering covid bullshit where you're supposed to avoid human interaction at all costs (unless violently protesting, then it's OK). Second, I am somewhat amused at just how poncey it has become, or rather, is trying to be. At the end of the day, this is a zoo food court. They're selling wildly overpriced burgers, chicken tenders, salads, it's not like we're having table service steak dinner on china with linen napkins or whatnot. I got the chicken tenders and the mac and cheese. And the menu of course has the name of the food, and then a little description. Chicken Tenders. Three all-white meat chicken breast tenders in a crispy breading, served with fries. Ok, I'm with you so far, that's what we're doing here... Macaroni and Cheese. Cavatappi and fondue.
...really? Really? Now, understand where I come from, I love food. Absolutely fucking love the truth and nature of good food. I'm like Remy in Ratatouille; the creation of food, the mingling of flavors and textures is like writing a symphony to me. My stove is the stage at Orchestra Hall. I love food. But I hate artificial inflation through poncey terminology. Cavatappi, a type of pasta. Curlycue macaroni essentially, instead of half-moon shaped. Fondue, literally melted cheese. So... macaroni and cheese.
There's having a strong vocabulary, and then there's just being snobby... Stick to your lane, food court. 🥔

who is the first artist you remember loving?
who is the artist you put on to make you smile?
which song always puts a smile on your face?
what was the first concert you went to?
do you prefer cds, streaming or vinyl?
which artist have you seen live that didn’t live up to the hype?
which artist has been the most life changing for you?
you have to get a lyric tattoo — which lyric is it?
do you prefer loud booming speakers or quiet in headphones?
do you have a favorite genre or dabble in it all?
who is the most overrated artist in your opinion?
who is the most underrated artist in your opinion?
tell us the name of a song that most people probably don’t know but you absolutely adore
describe your favorite song without telling me the title
how important is music to you on a scale of 0-100 ?
do you have music playing right now? if so, what?
which artist do you hope never stops making music?
how did you discover your favorite artist?
which song do you want played at your funeral?
do you and anyone you know have “a song”?
okay well here are the majority of questions for you to answer. i like music idk if you can tell
first artist I remember loving is ludovico einaudi, he does classical type stuff
if I wanna smile it depends on how I wanna smile, but the beatles rarely fail me
one song that always makes me smile is man I feel like a woman by shania twain
I believe the first concert I went to was probably something by the detroit symphony orchestra when I was real young, but the first one I remember was chicago and earth wind and fire when I was less young
I like the conveinience of digital music but theres something great about having physical copies, I'd say vinyl
I dont go to a lot of concerts, and I wouldnt say any of them didnt live up to it
most life changing is a hard one, I would say either the eagles or gordon lightfoot
I've given this thought in the past, had settled on one, then that one stopped being relevant. maybe something from disarm by the smashing pumpkins?
depends on the atmosphere, mostly I prefer headphones unless I'm in the car (although I try to limit myself in populated areas)
I'd say my favorite genre is classic rock but I dabble in a bit of just about everything
oh theres plenty of artists I think are overrated, that list typically includes much of the top 40.
oh I dont know if I can think of any artists that are particularly underrated, although I would encourage people to check out The HU
I'd recommend Группа крови (gruppa krovi) by Кино (Kino)
music is probably a 99/100 importance to me
I currently have the boys of summer by don henley playing
I dont care what happens at my funeral, just dont make me seem better than I was, and please dont make it boring
I dont have "a song" with anyone anymore

Detroiters pack Campus Martius for 19th annual Christmas tree lighting
Now it's Christmastime for real.
Hundreds gathered at Campus Martius on Friday night for an evening of holiday fun and to see the traditional 65-foot-tall Michigan-grown Christmas tree light up with 20,000 LEDs.
As part of the tree-lighting program, there were performances from Mariah Bell, the 2022 U.S national figure skating champion, and University of Michigan alumni and Golden Globe-winning actor and singer-songwriter Darren Criss, known for his role on TV's "Glee." Also performing was The Redhouse Band led by Darell “Red” Campbell Jr., a musician and teacher who works with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Civic Youth Ensembles.
