Tumblr media
day seven of malia’s christmas fic marathon
paring : Nico Hischier x fem!reader
summary : (Y/N) flies into the states early to surprise and watch her boyfriend play a game before he goes on the short Christmas break
warning(s) : none
author’s note : sorry that this is on the shorter side but i am tryinggg to catch up on fics for the marathon (i timed this out really poorly bc i didn’t realize how exhausted i would be from work everyday)
༺═──────────────═༻
The plane lands 20 minutes before game time so she has to rush to get to the Prudential Center from Newark airport. It should only be a 10 minute drive but it’s a few days before Christmas so everyone is flying in to spend the holidays with their families.
Including (Y/N).
She's lucky that her Uber is waiting for her right outside the airport after she grabs her suitcase from baggage claim. There is already a ton of traffic leaving the airport and she groans as she checks the time. She's going to miss warmups but maybe she can get there in time for puck drop.
There's a text from Nico that comes through as she finally leaves the airport.
neeks ❦ - 6:59 pm can't wait to see you after the game. gonna score a goal or two for you tonight. text me when you land. i love you, mien liebling ♡
(Y/N) realizes that he's back in the locker room between warmups and puck drop. Traffic finally begins to clear up so the Uber speeds up going into Newark. Her knee bounces in the backseat as she keeps an eye on the time.
"Anxious for the Devils game tonight?" The Uber asks with a thick New York accent. "I see you're headed to the Rock."
"Just anxious I won't get there in time for puck drop," she replies. "My boyfriend is playing in the game and I wanted to surprise him before the puck dropped but I didn't realize how much traffic there would be two days before Christmas."
The Uber looks very surprised when she says that her boyfriend is playing. "Devils player, I hope?" he curiously asks as he looks in the rearview mirror at her.
"Yeah," she replies. "I'm not wearing 13 for no reason."
"Ah, the captain," he says as he pulls out front of the Prudential Center. "Good choice. Well, good luck to the boys tonight. Hopefully they can bring home this dub against Detroit."
Yeah, me too. She doesn't say it out loud as she gets out of the car. She grabs her suitcase and heads around the building where she knows Nico parks all the time.
(Y/N) puts her suitcase in the trunk of Nico's car with the extra key she has before she heads to the back entrance of the building. With a flash of the VIP badge and ticket that she bought to security, (Y/N) gets into the back entrance of the Prudential Center with no issues.
She can hear the starting lineups being announced as she rushes through the concourse so they haven't even gotten to the National Anthem yet as she practically sprints to the seat she bought.
The singer is being announced as she walks down the steps to her front row seat right next to the Devils' bench. Luckily, Nico is standing closest to the glass on the ice as the singer begins to sing.
She isn't being very subtle with the way she's walking in front of everyone. When she looks on the ice, she sees that her boyfriend is looking at her. Nico smiles and bites his bottom lip when she looks at him. She gives him a small wave then shows him the jersey she's wearing. He has to repress the smile that threatens to spill onto his lips.
Then applause breaks out throughout the arena, signaling that the anthem has ended. Nico puts his helmet back on and skates to his teammates. (Y/N) settles down in her seat and sends Nico a 'looking good out there' text she knows he will see at intermission.
Their eyes occasionally find each other throughout the game. Jack even notices Nico looking toward her at one point during a power play and says something to his captain. Nico's face turns visibly red when he looks at his alternate. Jack laughs at whatever Nico says to him. (Y/N) can't help but capture Nico's flustered face as he gets ready for the faceoff. She'll have to ask him about it later.
Timo scores one in the second period and one in the third. Tyler scores the game winner with eight minutes left in the third, and the Devils hang on for the win. Nico gets a couple shots on goal but no puck luck.
As first star of the game Timo gets interviewed on the ice, (Y/N) makes her way to Nico's car.
She doesn't know if she's shivering from how cold it is outside or if it's because she's excited to see her boyfriend for the first time in over a week. Either way, her entire body is shaking.
While she waits for Nico, she leans against his car and scrolls through social media. There are clips of her arriving to the game and Nico's reaction to seeing her all over Twitter. She can't help but share one of the videos of Nico's reaction with a little heart emoji. The replies and quotes start rolling in almost immediately. The Devils fans are loving the confirmation that Nico was looking at her during the anthem.
The door opens and (Y/N) watches Nico walk into the parking lot with Jack, Luke, Jonas, and Timo. She smiles and walks up to the group.
"Congratulations on your two goal night, Timo," she says to get the group's attention. "And first star." Timo smiles in response but doesn't have time to say anything before Nico finally makes a move.
He immediately envelopes her in a hug as soon as he processes that she's standing in front of him. She giggles when her boyfriend lifts her off her feet. She wraps her legs around his waist so she doesn't fall. "I think that's our cue to leave," Timo tells the Hughes boys as he walks in the direction of his car.
Jack laughs, "Have a good night, cap."
"Use protection," the youngest Hughes states as he, Jack, and Timo head to their cars. She smiles at Luke's comment.
Nico has no reaction to what his teammates say. He's busy burying his face in (Y/N)'s neck and holding her in his arms. "
They stay like this for a few seconds before Nico finally sets her back down on the ground. His hands cup her jaw and she wraps her arms around his waist under his jacket. "I thought your flight was going to get in while I was playing," Nico finally says to her.
"And miss your last game before the short winter break?" she asks with a smile on her lips. "Absolutely not. I know you guys haven't been playing very well and I know how that's been making you feel so I wanted to be here tonight. Proud of you and the boys for bringing in a win going into the break."
A little frown forms on his lips. "You didn't have to leave your family early just to be here for me," he tells her. "Oh my God."
She fixes his beanie and lets out a light laugh. "They told me to come back," she admits to him. "I told them about our conversation after the last game and how I wished I could be there for you because of how frustrated you were so I switched to an earlier flight. Seemed to do the trick because you won tonight."
Nico smiles and shakes his head. His thumbs run over her cheekbones and he sighs. "I truly don't deserve you," he quietly says. "Best girlfriend ever."
"Best boyfriend ever," she retorts as she gets on her tiptoes. They share a quick, soft kiss that Nico tries to deepen but she doesn't let it get too far away from them. "Can we go home? I miss Nala and her cuddles."
He laughs at the mention of their kitten that they adopted a month ago. "Yes, we can go home," he says. "Pretty sure Nala misses you too. She cried right after you left and has slept on your side of the bed every night you've been away."
They get in the car and Nico takes off the beanie. Her jaw drops.
"You asshole," she gasps as Nico starts the car. "You cut your hair."
Nico smiles and she runs her fingers through his shortened locks. "It was too long, liebling," he laughs as he pulls out of the parking spot. "It was getting in the way more often than not." She pouts and Nico notices. "It'll grow back, baby. Promise."
"And you better not cut it again without my approval," she retorts. "You know how much I love the longer hair. Don't make me hide all of the scissors in New Jersey and New York, because I will."
"So dramatic."
"You love me anyway."
He glances over at her with a small smile on his face. "Yeah, I do."

Chapter Two
Aftermath-Luke Hughes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Luke Hughes knows he has some explaining to do to his family about his recent trip and normally that would be all that’s on his mind but unfortunately for him there’s something or I should say someone else occupying his mind.
Warnings: family fights, mentions of drinking, swearing, implied sexual activity
A/N this is the second chapter for this story I wrote this in one day because inspiration struck lol. I don’t typically go through and edit my stories just because if I did I’d never post them so I’m sorta an impulsive writer. I really hope you enjoyed and while this chapter does go hand in hand with a whole story I still write one shots if any one has any requests and there are more parts to this story. Ik it didn’t really talk about Izzie that much but I wanted to give an insight into Lukes life a little more and I also enjoyed writing some of the brotherly bonding stuff. feel free to ask me any requests or start a conversation with me! And I hope you enjoy this chapter!!
June 9th 2022 7:00 PM
It was a long six hour flight home to Michigan and when Luke Hughes arrived at the Detroit airport he knew his family would be waiting there wanting answers.
Unfortunately the boys who are his best friends were not the smartest and word got out the trip the boys had planned to go to California was actually a trip to go to Mexico. Once the news was out it wasn’t long before every boys families had started calling and texting to no reply.
The five boys knew they would have to face the music eventually and safe to say none of them were thrilled by the idea of having consequences for their actions.
Shortly after landing at the airport and grabbing their bags the boys found all their families who were not extremely pleased by their return.
Luke’s parents were no exception.
The family of 5 made their way to the parking lot silently.
Luke placed his bags in the trunk of his dads car and sat in the backseat with his brothers on both sides of him.
It was a silent 30 minute drive back to the families home and when the car was finally in park his father turned around and disappointingly shook his head at his youngest child.
Normally Luke would be feeling very remorseful and anxious about the disappointment he has caused his family but his mind was still racing trying to relieve the past 24 hours with Izzie, the beach, the kisses, the ocean.
“Luke let’s go” A voice breaks Luke’s thought
Luke looks over and sees his brother Jack standing outside the car waiting for him to exit
Luke exits the car and Jack harshly closes the door.
The family enters there house and Luke places his bags on the floor by the door leaving him holding only his phone.
The silence from the car ride continues inside the house as no one says a word and everyone just makes there way towards the living room and takes a seat.
“What the hell?” Is the first thing said by Luke’s older brother Jack
“Ok look I get it it probably wasn’t the best idea to go to Mexico and I’m sorry I lied but like nothing happened and we had a great time” Luke defends himself
“Nothing happened you and your friends left the country without telling an adult! What if something had happened what if one of you had gotten in an accident or went missing we would be looking in California for goodness sake!” Ellen Hughes exclaims at her youngest son
“I mean we’re adults” Luke says in a monotone voice
“You know what your mother means you didn’t tell a parent” Jim Hughes intervenes
“Look I said I’m sorry I don’t know what else you want me to say” Luke says
“We want you to understand that what you did was wrong and that it should’ve never happened in the first place” Ellen says calmly
“Alright sorry it won’t happen again” Luke says with a slight eye roll which earns him a smack upside the head from Quinn who’s sitting next to him
“You’re grounded for a week and when we go up to the lake you’re not allowed to go wandering off on your own without another person with you” Jim Hughes sentences
Luke scoffs at this. He thinks it’s fucking ridiculous he’s 18 years old, he just finished his freshman year at college and he’s being treated like he’s a fucking child. It wasn’t the grounding that was pissing him off so much as it was the thought of having a babysitter. Lukes been able to go off on his own at the lake since he was 14 years old no worries whatsoever which isn’t completely true his parents and brothers always worried a little bit seeing as he is the baby of the family but Luke always stayed relatively close and always kept his phone on him.
“No that’s bullshit!” Luke shouts standing up
“Did you really think you could just go to Mexico without telling anyone and not have any consequences?” Quinn who has stayed silent this entire time finally speaks
“I’m 18 years old I’m not some child you can order around anymore and I certainly don’t need a fucking babysitter”
“Clearly you do if you’re off running around in Mexico why the hell did you even go to Mexico if you wanted the beach there are plenty of ones here! In America!” Jack shouts standing up as well
“Luke! Sit down.” His dad says
Luke rolls his eyes again feeling nothing but anger building up at the way this conversation has gone. Luke shakes his head in disbelief and scoffs before grabbing his phone that was sitting on the couch and walking towards the front door.
He leaves the house slamming the front door and leaving the people inside both shocked and angry by his actions.
Luke starts walking away from his house and onto the dark pavement lit up only by street lights.
After about 15 minutes of walking Luke reaches his neighborhood park. He sits down on a bench and tilts his head back looking up at the night sky.
There were few stars up in the sky but Luke still enjoyed the view although he preferred the view from last night.
Luke starts to think back to the bar and dancing with Izzie. His hands around her waist hers on his neck. Her lips touching his. Within seconds his own lips turned from a resting frown that had been present since the car ride into a smile.
Luke pulled out his phone and goes to Instagram. He tries every combination of Izzie he could think of unaware of the spelling of her name but with the thousands of results and no way to narrow it down Luke quickly gives up.
The frown which had since disappeared was now back and became even more distraught as he noticed two figures walking towards him.
Once the figures came closer to Luke he noticed who it was.
“Dude let’s go” Jack says walking closer to Luke
Luke just looks at Quinn who’s displaying no emotional reaction. Luke starts to wonder if it’s because he’s tired or because he’s pissed or possibly both.
Luke thoughts get interrupt when he feels a hand on his bicep
He looks over and sees Jack gripping his arm and urging him to stand up
Luke shakes his head and stands up then the trio of brothers start the 15 or so walk back towards their house.
Once the park was in an unseeable position the silence that Luke has gotten oh so familiar with today is broken.
“Did you have fun on your trip?” Jack asks with a sympathetic such smile
“Ya I had a great time we went to Rocky Point and it was fun it was really fun” Luke says matching the slight smile appearing on his brothers face
“What did you guys do?” Jack continues the conversation
“Um I mean we did a lot of things we spent a lot of time at the beach, we went to a couple of bars and clubs at night, there was one day where we went jet skiing that was super fun” Luke explains not sure if mentioning the bars and clubs was a smart decision but chooses not to overthink it.
“Did you fall off the jetski?” Quinn asks with a laugh remembering a more recent time when Luke had been on the back of a jetski with Jack driving and despite being told multiple times to hold on when Jack hit the gas Luke went flying off into the lake and at first the whole family was worried out of their mind but when Luke rose his soaked face and hair out of the water and stuck up a middle finger towards Jack they all laughed.
“No I didn’t fall off mainly because Jack wasn’t driving” Luke responds giving a little nudge to Quinn who smiled towards both his little brothers after an exchange of smiles and laughs between the trio Quinn’s demeanor quickly changed to a more serious look
“you know Luke I’m really happy you had a good time but you know it just it would’ve been nice to know where you were going mom and dad were freaking out a bit when your friends mom called and said you guys didn’t go to California they were really worried something could’ve happened to you and when you wouldn’t respond to anyone they really love you kid and we do to and we don’t know what any of us would’ve done if something did happen to you” Quinn explains to his youngest brother
For the first time today Luke starts to feel a little bit remorseful about what he’s done and realizes his family although they can be annoying sometimes they really love him and he regrets worrying them so much.
“I’m sorry I worried you guys and you’re right I should’ve told someone or at the very least text or call you guys back I’m really sorry” Luke says
“Just don’t do again or otherwise I’ll have to kill you which would really suck because that would mean we wasted our 4th pick and I think it’s gonna be really fun when you and I get to win on the ice against Quinn” Jack laughs
“Don’t jinx it or tomorrow’s headlines gonna be that I got traded before I even sign a contract” Luke responds
“Hopefully that won’t happen” Jack adds crossing his fingers
“Oh god the two of you on the same team and living together I don’t know who I’m gonna feel worse for one of you or the state of New Jersey” Quinn jokes
Jack reaches over and gives Quinn a playful shove causing all three brothers to smile again the next few minutes the brothers spent laying and teasing one another until they arrived back at the families home.
Jack was the first to step in followed by Luke who had no way of escaping again since Quinn was blocking the exit with his own body.
Once all three boys were inside the door closed shut and Quinn turned around and locked the door making it official that everyone was now home for the night.
“Where are mom and dad?” Luke asks
“They’re in their room” Quinn answers and Luke sighs and starts walking in the direction of the master bedroom.
Knock knock
“Come in” Luke’s mom answers
Luke walks in and sees his mom putting her jewelry away and his dad sitting in a chair in the corner with a book cracked open
“Hey I just wanted to tell you guys I’m sorry I’m sure I worried you guys alot and it was really a shitty thing for me to do and not answering your calls or text was stupid and I shouldn’t have lied about where I was going I know you guys were already nervous about me going to California and it was a really selfish thing for me to do and I’m really sorry” Luke apologizes this time meaning it
Both of his parents smile and his dad puts down the book and gives his youngest son a hug his mom walks over and does the same.
Luke spends the next few minutes talking to his parents and telling them some of the fun parts of his trip well making sure to only include the family friendly parts which do not include his beverage or entertainment choices however does include a mention of riding the jet ski which his parents took as an opportunity to tease him about when he fell off.
After a few more laughs Luke chose to apologize once more for the worried he had caused them and they reassured him that he was forgiven with a pat on the back from his father and a kiss on the cheek from his mother the family says their good nights and then the 18 year old left their room to go to his own.
As he walks towards the stairs he sees his bags still sitting there and rather than bringing them up right now he decides later is better and by that he means sometime tomorrow starting to feel a little tired himself.
Luke walks to his room and shuts the door then feels in his pocket for his phone and goes on Instagram.
He notices a few of his recommendations to follows are random girls named Izzie with alternating spellings.
He shakes his head with a laugh.
“What’s so funny?” Jack asks appearing in the open doorway
“Eh nothing” Luke shakes off still smiling
Jack starts walking closer to Luke and soon Quinn appears in the room.
Jack takes a look at Luke’s screen which he was doing nothing in response to hide as he didn’t really care about the contents being public at least not to his brothers
“Why do you follow so many girls named Izzie?” Jack asks with a confused look
“I don’t follow them I was just looking for the Instagram of some girl I met but it’s kinda impossible considering all I know is her first name and I don’t even know how she spells it” Luke explains with a shrug
“Did you just meet her this week?” Quinn asks stepping into the room and the conversation
“Ya I met her last night” Luke says
“Funny how when you were telling us about your trip you left this part out” Jack jokes then takes a seat on Lukes bed
“So tell us what happened” Jack encourages
“What?” Luke asks as he watches Quinn take a seat next to Jack
“Come on you never tell us anything!” Jack claims
“I’m not gonna tell you guys what happened it’s private” Luke says
“Fine but we’re not leaving till you tell us about Izzie at least tell us where you met her or what she looks like” Jack says lying back on Lukes bed and getting comfortable
“You are so annoying” Luke shakes his head then walks over to his desk chair and takes a seat
“I met her at a bar it was like a beachside type thing it was like I don’t know 10 or something but I was drinking a beer and then I decided to take a shot of vodka and obviously vodka tastes disgusting so I made a face and she was standing next to me and starts talking about how it’s a mentality and that way the shots don’t taste so bad and we took a couple of shots together and then we danced together and we made out a few times in the bar and then we ended up leaving and we walked down to the beach and uh we had a good night” Luke recalls starting to blush a little near the end
“I’m going to assume had a good night means you walked her home and then went back to your room alone” Quinn says starting to get up
“If that’s what helps you sleep at night then that’s exactly what happened” Luke answers
“It does” Quinn says with a laugh then says goodnight and proceeds to head to his own room.
“I’m out too but I’m proud and relieved to know you at least have a little bit of game” Jack jokes giving Luke a playful punch to the shoulder which Luke returns and adds a mocking laugh
“Goodnight” Jack says as he walks out the door
“Goodnight” Luke responds

Winter holiday fics by lincyclopedia
Thanks for the tags, @cricketnationrise and @doggernaut! When you tagged me, I wasn't sure if I had any winter holiday fics. I have 12, across four fandoms. In my defense, I have over 200 fics total, so I lose track of what I've written sometimes. (Also, looking back through my AO3 account, it's like, man, I used to write. Unfortunately I've been too depressed to do much of that for a while now.) Anyway. Here's what I've got, organized by fandom:
Check Please
Deck the Halls with Balls of Holly
Ransom misunderstood the lyrics to "Deck the Halls," and he and Holster wind up making some interesting Christmas decorations for the Haus.
This is a super short one-shot featuring platonic Ransom & Holster friendship from Bitty's POV. (It's part of my series of fics based on misheard song lyrics.) The relevant holiday is Christmas.
Palentine's Day Karaoke
This fic is inspired by @softfloralbro's story "Shitty Knight's Palentine's Day Spectacular" and is basically a karaoke playlist wrapped in narration. The basic idea is that SMH has a karaoke party on Valentine's Day, and everyone serenades their friends. Set in February of Year 2.
This fic is full of SMH friendship, music, and not much else. The relevant holiday is Valentine's Day.
In Your Warmth I Forget How Cold It Can Be
In a world where the graduation kiss never happened, it's winter break of Bitty's senior year, and Bitty and Jack are both out and single. The plan is for Bitty to spend New Year's Eve with Jack at Jack's condo, but that plan goes awry when Bitty and Jack return from the airport to find a homophobic slur painted on Jack's parking space. TW for homophobia.
Basically, this is canon-divergent Zimbits getting together. The relevant holiday is New Year's Eve.
too long i've been afraid (of losing love i guess i've lost)
Dex gets disowned after coming out as gay. SMH is there for him.
Basically, angst, hurt/comfort, and platonic Frogs content, plus some platonic Dex & Bitty. The relevant holiday is Christmas.
Five Times Lukas Was Homesick Plus One Time He Didn’t Have to Be
It can be hard to go to school in another country where everyone speaks a different language and no one celebrates your holidays. Luckily, Lukas has friends to help when he’s homesick.
Okay, this is a 5+1 and only one of the scenes is actually about a winter holiday, but I like that scene, so I'm including this fic on the list. The relevant holiday is St. Lucia Day.
When Lucia Day Dawns
For Lukas's senior project as a music major, he has to plan/lead a public music performance. He decides to form a choir to sing Swedish Lucia/Advent/Christmas songs on St. Lucia Day (December 13). This is the Friday before finals and everything is stressful—until the concert starts and suddenly it’s perfect.
This is another Lukas-centric fic about being Swedish. The relevant holiday is St. Lucia Day.
Carry On
Right Now
A one-shot set during Christmas break of Simon and Agatha's fifth year at Watford. Even though they're not ultimately meant to be, they made sense as a couple once.
This is very jossed by Any Way the Wind Blows, but I still kind of like it. It's pre-canon Simon/Agatha. The relevant holiday is Christmas.
Stranded
After leaving Baz's house and dropping Penny off in London, Simon and Agatha get stranded in a ditch in the middle of a snowstorm. Ex awkwardness ensues.
Unlike "Right Now," this fic features Simon and Agatha as exes. The relevant holiday is Christmas.
Sounds Like a Date
Baz is a barista stuck working on Christmas Eve. Simon is a handsome customer.
This is a coffee shop AU featuring a Snowbaz meet-cute. The relevant holiday is Christmas.
Yuri on Ice
Ice Quality
One of Yuuri's college friends invites him to spend Christmas with her family, and Celestino approves as long as Yuuri promises to skate while he's there. Trouble is, the town's indoor rink is closed for renovations. A one-shot set during Yuuri's time in college in Detroit.
This is a pre-canon platonic Yuri & OFC fic. The relevant holiday is Christmas.
Happy New Year, Otabek!
Yuri and Otabek have been best friends for four years, and Yuri's had a crush on Otabek for a while, but he never expected Otabek to like him back. Until, that is, Otabek gets drunk at the Grand Prix Final banquet and says some things Yuri doesn't expect. It's going to be a very interesting New Year's celebration in Almaty . . .
This is a post-canon Yuri Plisetsky/Otabek, and it's the only multi-chapter fic on this list (though it's still pretty short). The relevant holiday is New Year's Eve.
Sherlock
Over the Table and through the Giggles
John has insisted on hosting a Christmas party. Again. Everyone but Sherlock is drinking, and John is telling stories about Sherlock, and suddenly Sherlock decides to kiss John. Plotless fluff.
This is a canon-divergent Johnlock getting-together scene based more heavily than you might guess on my sober-but-sleep-deprived friends and me being ridiculous in high school. The relevant holiday is Christmas.
I'm guessing a lot of people have been tagged, especially from the Check Please fandom, but I'm going to try to pull in some Queen's Thief folks. I tag @worldsentwined, @newtsoftheworldunite, @hoeratius, @eponymiad, and anyone else who wants to play!

Yesterday someone said to me that it was "hard to fly anywhere from California" and the notion was so mind-boggling I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. In the Bay Area, there are three major international airports, two of which are very accessible via multiple modes of public transportation, which run relatively often and with a wide range of operational hours. If you don't like that, Uber/Lyft rates are reasonable. And there are flights just like, all the time, from a variety of airlines.
it is hard to fly from the Bay Area in California????????
I am lucky that there is a tiny airport in a city I live near, which services like five flights a day. But unless I am in that city (not my house) there is no Uber/Lyft. The bus that services my town also runs five or six times a day. I am even luckier that there is a middling airport 80 miles away. Most of those are rural miles, though you hit an Interstate about an hour into the drive. There is a bus that runs a couple times a day, which may or may not match with your flight times and usually doesn't match with the local bus. If you want an Uber/Lyft it is $300 but again, that would be from the city near me, not my actual house. There is also a long-distance bus that will take you to the nearest MAJOR major metropolitan area (4 hours), which has the three major airports, mostly accessible via public transportation. Also, any flight near me costs about a billion dollars unless you have the ability to not need to park anywhere or make buses line up, in which case they are merely somewhat expensive.
And that is, all things considered, in the scheme of transportation and ways one might access them in this country, pretty good. Like, there are so many places where it would be way worse. (Even though it is the hardest place to get to an airport that *I* have ever lived. I used to live in western Michigan, next to a city that had its own tiny airport, very similar to my current situation. But Grand Rapids was half as far and Detroit was an easy, easy shot down I-94, and technically Amtrak goes to Chicago. But, having lived in Michigan, nothing is a greater hell than a Chicago airport.)
It is hard to fly from the Bay Area in California?????
I can't
Okay I'm done

What sculpture parks have you visited, or most enjoyed? Along that same thread, where do you like to find publicly accessible art?
Socrates sculpture park in queens kinda sucks no shade but they’re probably the most active in nyc, the hy line also has been commissioning sculptures but I tend to not really like their programming either (they‘ve done a few that are exceptions, I liked the Raul de Nieves and Cannupa Hanska Luger installations) unfortunately storm king is not free… I thought the Heidelberg project in Detroit was really special and was lucky to see it before it closed down.. the Ciudad Universitaria murals in Mexico City are probably the one I most enjoyed though not a scultpure park but beautiful…
unfortunately a lot if not most contemporary public art is bad because people who choose what projects get funding (bureaucrats) tend to have terrible taste…. I would encourage everyone to look into historic public art in their cities? A lot of time it’s hiding in plain sight… Alexander Calder designed this stretch of sidewalk I walk over all the time and Howardena Pindell has a giant mural in the phoenix airport, and Lichtenstein designed a food court in Roosevelt field mall … like you never know what you might find & where.
Also not necessarily public but it’s free to walk into galleries (if it’s not don’t go) and you can see what’s on with apps like seesaw and make a map for yourself if you want to wander around a neighborhood… More museums than people realize in nyc are also free or pay what you want, and it’s also easy to lie and get free tickets if you want to go but not pay.

9, 17, 19!
Best month for you this year?
Hmm... I'm gonna go with July, even though it was full of a lot of ups and downs. The downs: had to be in my friend's wedding and hated it because I hated how I looked, felt, and how she treated me. also cried in the Detroit Airport because I thought evgeni fucking malkin was going to leave the Pittsburgh fucking Penguins.
the ups: got to an idyllic paradise where I spent a blissful four days "working" and falling in love with a wonderful magical place where I also learned that geno was staying. hit a state of utter euphoria. also went to DC with my mom and spontaneously gained the ability to parallel park.
I think it evened out. Kinda. Maybe.
Post a picture from the end of the year

What’re you excited about for next year?
I answered travel last time... so this is a partial cheat but I'm excited to see people next year. I already have plans to visit some friends (like you!!!), and I'm working on planning a trip with my siblings, and a trip with my mom and aunt... I just want to spend the year with people.

The day the Polish music died for 2 minutes and 58 seconds.
March 26, 2024
When I was a kid back in the '50s, my friends and I experienced a lot of "unsupervised play," something I don't think children get enough of these days. I'd like to tell you a story that illustrates the concept and what it may have meant for us later in life. First, let me set the stage...
It was the summer of 1956. I was nine years old and had just completed the third grade. My Dad, in his late 30s, was active in the Vincent J. Bieneik VFW Post in Detroit, as were most of his buddies who had returned home from World War II.
In those days the VFW held an annual picnic "out in the country" at the now defunct New Liberty Park, which, as best as I can recall, was somewhere south of Detroit Metroplitan Airport.
New Liberty Park was set up for summer time fun. Like several other outdoor venues of that era, it had an open-air pavilion, including a huge dance floor and stage for live music; separate open-air buildings for the sale of beer, soft drinks, hot dogs, potato chips and ice cream; and acres of parking in a wooded area that afforded an early version of tailgating.
My two sisters and I always looked forward to the VFW picnic. My mother would fill a wooden picnic basket with sandwiches and cookies, and pack Vernors ginger ale and Faygo pop. We couldn't wait to get there and compete in the water balloon toss, three-legged races and other games. One year the three of us swept the foot races for our respective age groups and caused a stir as parents complained about "that family that wins everything." Another year I was thrilled to hold a winning ticket for one of the VFW raffle prizes--an electric can opener.
My Dad was always involved with the picnic's planning committee. He and his VFW pals would smear grease paint on their faces, dress up as clowns and rent a trailer to haul a polka band through the Polish neighborhoods of Detroit to publicize the picnic. Also, he had been a childhood friend of Johnny Sadrack, who became a popular Polish band leader during the '50s and '60s, and my Dad recruited the group to play at the picnic.
There were outdoor speakers affixed to poles and buildings on the grounds at New Liberty. My Dad would bring a box of 78 rpm records from his collection--polkas and obereks--and play them on a turntable, rigged up to the speakers around the park, before the band began to play and in between its sets.
My brother Mark was born in February of 1956, and when it came time for the picnic that year he was only a few months old. So my Mom and sisters stayed behind--although I think my sisters came out later that afternoon with my Uncle Chester and Auntie Connie--while my Dad let me tag along in the morning when he drove to the park to set up for the carloads of people that were expected to line the gate on a picture-perfect day.
His plan was to turn me loose at New Liberty, load me up with enough money to buy tickets for pop, ice cream and potato chips, and let me roam the park while he did his thing.
I had a plan, too.
By 1956, artists such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Buddy Holly had burst onto the scene and helped to revolutionize the popular culture with a new genre of music called rock 'n' roll. During the winter of that year the first "kid group" recorded "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" by the Teenagers, featuring 13-year-old Frankie Lymon. I was hooked instantly by their sound. I bought the 45 at the neighborhood record shop and played it incessantly on my parents' "hi-fi." I soon started hanging out at the store--unsupervised--flipping through the record bins every week, and in the spring I was elated to discover that the Teenagers had released their follow-up recording, "I Want You To Be My Girl."
The record shop was sold out of the 45 version when I was ready to buy. However, they had a bunch on the 78 format. Feeling desperate to own the record and play it any time I wanted, I purchased the platter.
On the morning of the picnic my Dad gathered up his things, including his collection of polka records, and off we went to the park. I packed some things too--a rubber ball, a couple comic books and my prized possession, "I Want You To Be My Girl," and stashed them in the trunk of my Dad's classic, tri-color (pink, black and white) '56 Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis.
When we arrived at New Liberty, my Dad fired down a quick shot and a beer with his pals and went to work on getting things set up. Sure enough, he immediately hooked up the turntable to the speaker system and loaded it with a "stack of shellac." I went off on my own, exploring the woods, where I could clearly hear the music from the pavilion, while VFW members packed the coolers with beer and dry ice.
In the early afternoon, the band started playing Polish music at the pavilion. By now there were picnickers everywhere in the park, shuffling back and forth from their cars to the dance floor. From a wooden bench along the walls in the pavilion I sat alone and watched the dancers put down their moves.
I also watched for my opportunity.
Sure enough, after the band concluded its first set and the dancers went outside to take a break, my dad put on a stack of Polish records and the music again played throughout the park. I waited, watched and listened as the first group of tunes finished playing. Then someone put on another stack and the music continued.
I prepared to make my move.
I slid over to the turntable just inside the pavilion, carefully raised the stack of records from the spindle, pulled my 78 out from under my t-shirt, slipped it into the pile of records, put them back on the spindle, and returned to my seat on the bench.
A few minutes later I could hear, loud and clear, the distinctive bass voice of 17-year-old Sherman Garnes on the song's intro, blasting all over New Liberty Park: "Bay, bay, bay, bay bom, doo bee, do wop..." Then the Teenagers' three back-up singers fell in: "Bom dee doo wop bom doo bee doo wop bom dee doo..." And, finally, out poured the silky smooth boy soprano of Frankie Lymon: "Oh, oh, oh, oh...oh, oh, oh, oh...I love you baby and I want you to be my girl...Well, c'mon baby let's go down town..."
I recall watching the faces of people clogging the real estate between the pavilion and beer hut as the Teenagers sang. Truthfully, few people seemed to react to what was playing over the speaker system. Mostly they kept doing what they were doing--eating, drinking, talking, laughing, sweating. Did they like the song? Or not? Did they notice that something other than Polish music was playing? Or not? Someone surely noticed, I thought, and so I sat there feeling proud that I had introduced my music to the old people at the picnic.
I wasn't thinking about whether I had done anything wrong that day. I didn't feel as though I had played a prank. I was simply on a child's mission to share with my parents' generation how the music made me feel inside. If I had asked for permission to do it, I'm sure I would have been told no. So I just did it.
That's the sort of attitude most of my friends and I grew up with. We were learning right from wrong every day at home, to be sure. At school, we considered the discipline imposed by the nuns as over the top. So we were always trying to outsmart them. It was like a game we played every day.
Meanwhile, no one held our hands as we walked to school. Rarely were we driven to school. There were no school busses. There were only busses operated by the DSR (Departement of Street Railways). Our parents never seemed particularly concerened when we rode one--unchaperoned--to Briggs Stadium for a Tigers game. Nor did they seem to worry much when we rode our bikes 15 miles or so to Belle Isle.
As I said, we experienced a helluva lot of childhood independence in those days. Which sometimes resulted in consequeneces for our actions, while encouraging responsibility.
If you threw a buddy's gym shoes through an open garage window on the way home from basketball practice, well, the next day you had knock on the homeowner's door and ask for permission to retrieve them.
And if you fell through a plaster ceiling while playing in the attic of a "new house," you had to make some quick decisions. Hide? Run? Or face the music? Big decisions for a kid.
It makes me feel uncomfortable that nine- and ten-year-olds today are rarely allowed to walk a couple blocks to the store to buy candy. It bothers me when I hear about kids who aren't allowed to go to the park alone until they're 13 or 14.
I admit that there's lots of bad stuff going on in our world these days. But with the bombardment of 24-hour news that we endure every day on our computers, phones, TVs, radios, etc., I think the bad stuff often gets overly publicized. I don't think that things are nearly as bad on some of the the streets of our cities, suburbs and towns as they are depicted to be.
Practically every kid in my class, as well as those in the classes ahead and behind me, turned out to be darn resilient peoiple. Many of them worked to pay their own way through college during the '60s. Others, as 18- and 19-year-olds, faced up to the draft with amazing courage during the Vietnam War years. In the '70s, we rocked it hard and faced the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse.
But I think we were prepped well to handle the issues we would face because we were brought up with a reasonable blend of supervision and autonomy. And in the end, but for a few, life worked out pretty well.
Allowing for a degree of common sense and reasonableness, it seems to me that it would do children good today to occassionally experience unsupervised play and less programming. I just don't think that every hour of a kid's summer day has to be filled with music lessons, travel ball, play practice and foreign language drills. The time that kids spend on internet-connected devices is what should be heavily monitored.
Kids need time to be kids. So they can experience the lessons that come with things like sneaking music into their parents' playlist or falling through a plaster ceiling.
