The following review was written by Ultimate Rabbit correspondent, Tony Farinella.
This was my first time having the pleasure of sitting down to watch “The Color Purple,” directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg. This is a director who has never been afraid to tackle any type of film project. When watching this film, his trademark heart is clearly on display. What makes it stand out and be…
I just found out that Dana Ivey and Susan Sarandon are two different people. What te fuck?! How did this happen.. I’m upset. I mean look how much they look alike!!
When the 2017 Golden Globe nominations were announce, the question on everyone’s mind was “What the hell is The Leisure Seeker?!” Starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland as an aging couple having one last getaway in their eponymous Winnebago, the film debuted in competition at Venice before also playing a TIFF gala and went entirely under the radar. Sony Classics quietly gave the film a qualifying release, successfully netting Mirren a Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Golden Globe nomination despite so few seeing the film. The nomination was a head-scratcher to most, but was predicted by none other than our Joe Reid.
This episode, we discuss Helen Mirren’s vast history with the Golden Globes and assess the current diagnosis on the Globes and their often amusing nomination history. We also talk about Sutherland’s famously surprising lack of an acting Oscar nomination, other possible comedy leading actress contenders from 2017, and another round of Alter Egos.
Topics also include what famous festival jurors think of the movies they have to watch, the film’s half-baked look at the 2016 election, and surprise Danielle Deadwyler.
Film after film: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (dir. Frank Oz, 1987)
I saw this film as a child and didn't remember how effortlessly funny it was. Headly is a scene-stealer in what could otherwise seem like a display of the comic bravado of Caine and Martin. Her last-scene heavily-accented return is a peak of how her character is smartly developed from a possible victim of both "scoundrels" to a fascinating mastermind. The scene of Caine mercilessly whipping Martin's fake-paralyzed legs is one of the funniest scenes ever. Harris, Conroy, and Ivey have pleasant one-two-scene cameos.
Even though this follows the same “blonde uses genuineness to move others into doing the right thing” beats as the original, the original was much better than this one.
