A Challenge for Myself: Deactivating IG
Tumblr media
I decided to challenge myself this year: deactivating my main Instagram. This decision came to me before my long holidays. Part of it was because I was avoiding someone who's very active in social media and another reason was to not let myself get distracted during the holidays with social media.
Having social media during the holidays is akin to me consuming everyone's daily life and how they spent their holidays. I could spend hours looking at my instagram. At the same time, I would have the urge to post an update myself. "Oh, I'm going back to my hometown for the holidays", it would be hard to fight the urget to let everyone know what I'm up to.
Deactivating social media, and on top of that challenging myself not to activate it for the time being, allows me to ease that urge. I told myself, however big things are going in my life, I should resist the urge until it's time for to reactivate my social media.
What were the conditions I made for myself when I'm considering this?
Getting a new job in Batam (my hometown) or Singapore so that I can be close with my family and friends
Getting accepted to a master's degree abroad
Getting a boyfriend...? (re: umm... what?)
Yep. The above were the conditions I created for myself if I wanted to reactivate my Instagram. I told myself if I satisfied any of those conditions (the 3rd option is just an add-on tbh), then I can get ahold of my main IG account. I know it wasn't easy and that's why I created those, hoping that the time spent on IG can instead be put on those ventures.
What have I experienced so far since the deactivation?
The last time I deactivated my account, the longest I could hold on is 4 weeks (equals to a month) before deciding to reactivate my account. At that time, I just felt that Instagram had turned into a toxic social media where I agonize over each post feeds.
Those 4 weeks turned out to be one of those days where I feel content with life. I remembered taking a ride to the bus stop and felt empowered. I still end up reactivate my account because of my lack of goals.
This time around, I have deactivated for more than a month and still going on strong. I do have the urge to reactivate my account but since I made promise to myself, I have managed not to reactivate it. If I needed to do it for a year, so be it. As long as I can achieve what I set out for myself. At least that's the effect of terms and conditions in my deactivation journey (so far).
Same as last time, I do feel some degree of contentment in my own life. Another thing that I realize is that I became much more honest to myself. I was able to put a magnifying glass to what my feelings, situations, thoughts, and everything that's been going on with my life. Back when I was an active user of IG, I was always evasive when it comes to myself.
Up till last April, I have been so up to date with my friends' update in social media. I know just everything going on with my friends' life by their Instagram posts and stories. It dawned on me, when I had a get together wih a group of friends, that it felt so out of place to know alot about my friends without even making any meaningful connection. It just felt wrong.
Lately, I have been discovering that without Instagram, I do think of friends and acquaintances and would contact them from time to time to have a life update sesh with them. So it wasn't that bad to disconnect just to connect (albeit still done via other messaging app).
So far? Things have been going great. Opportunities seems to be popping up for me, even though it might be unrelated to this deactivation. But hey, I get to enjoy it fully without having the urge to post or something.
Would I still considering reactivating my Instagram? Probably, yes, but after I achieved what I promised myself. Also, I still have an active Instagram (Reina's main account, @thepoetryland) which I still use from time to time to check on brand's update. I do have a plan on posting poetries, readings, etc, but I haven't had a fixed concept for it yet. For now, I'll just roll with it and see what I can do from here on.
Anyway, adieu for now. - Reina

Arw you really the author John Green? The same person who wrote The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska?
Yes, but I published one of those books 19 (?!?!?!) years ago and the other 12 (!?!?!?!?) years ago. What have I been up to since then?
My brother Hank and I started Good.store, which delivers high-quality socks, coffee, and soap to your home and donates 100% of its profit to charity. Through good store, we've raised over $7,500,000 to support efforts to radically reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, where as recently as 2019, one in seventeen women could expect to die in pregnancy or childbirth.
(In fact, technically I am here on tumblr as an unpaid intern for the awesome coffee club, which you should really sign up for if you like ethically sourced coffee that tastes delicious and doesn't enrich billionaires.)
I wrote the novel Turtles All the Way Down and then had a little existential crisis and wrote a nonfiction book called The Anthropocene Reviewed, the latter of which is my first book for adults and my first attempt to write as myself.
I helped produce made a movie adaptation (streaming now on Max!) of Turtles all the Way Down.
I helped raise my kids and supported my spouse as she wrote her book You Are An Artist and created a PBS show about art called The Art Assignment.
I ran the educational media company Complexly and the merch company dftba.com while my brother had cancer.
I bought around 2% of a fourth-tier English football team called AFC Wimbledon. Wimbledon are different from most football clubs because they are owned by their fans, each of whom gets one vote in the club's leadership regardless of how much money they put into the club.
I became obsessed with tuberculosis, the world's deadliest infectious disease (it will kill over a million people this year despite being curable), and how TB both exemplifies and reinforces human-built structures of injustice, which is the subject of a book I'm writing that will come out next year.
