me?? actually making content for my ocs??? can you BELIEVE?????
cw: implied murder/rape/violence (towards women), implied pedophilia (towards teenagers), casual misogyny/dehumanization, victim blaming, uhhh a rl serial killer gets mentioned so there's that
none of the subjects above are explicit, just implied
alt title: randall kundert’s a sick piece of shit and i am very sorry for subjecting you all to him
august 11, 1977. somewhere in upstate new york.
it’s half past one am.
randall kundert finds himself sitting on the hood of his car, parked on the side of the road, smoking a cigarette. he’s not far from the nearest motel, but it’s late and really, who’s actually gonna find him here? more importantly, who’s actually gonna care?
the only lights are the headlights of his car, shining up towards the billboard he’s currently found himself lost in. the only sound being the muffled tunes coming from the car radio.
he feels at home here.
he had been trying to finish the entry for his latest girl---trial and error had taught randall that it was best to start writing as soon as possible---but he just couldn't keep himself focused.
he had all the basics down
(her name was cora jackson she had golden blonde hair in a loose braid she wore a brown sweater and a loooong skirt that went down to her flats her car was broken down she wanted to call her mom she cried and cried and cried and)
but goddamn, it just gets boring writing the same shit over and over and over again (with a few treasured exceptions, of course).
suddenly, randall hears what sounds like a news report coming from inside.
“...the new york city police department have announced tonight that they have in their custody the man they believe to be the .44 killer, also known as the son of sam. david berkowitz, age 24, was captured outside his apartment building in nearby yonkers...”
huh. and here randall thought they were never gonna catch the fucker. probably just turned himself in or something.
“well, shit.”
maybe he should be worried. that fucker running around
(what was his name, daniel? derek? randall had forgotten already. he’d never been good with names, unless it was one of his girls.)
was the only thing that got ava to shut the hell up about him being out until around 3:30 am that last night in nyc. it was less than two weeks ago, and randall honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she was still pissed about it. probably thought he was cheating on her or some shit like that (god he hoped it was just something like that please please please don’t let ava find out ever please).
not that it matters, really. it's not like anyone would realistically suspect him.
natalie lipschitz doesn't remember jackshit about the night of july 31. he’d done a hell of a number on that girl (and it serves her right for being out while a maniac was running around), it’d be a shock if she ever remembered.
besides, he’s stopped paying attention anyway.
someone else is on his mind right now.
seventeen year old judith dempsey stares down at him in gray-scale with blank eyes from the billboard.
missing since 11/18/1976.
(he left her in that run-down house deep in the woods of violet county, hidden beneath the floorboards.)
have you seen her?
(she had those same dimples that even now just drove him wild, that same pale soft hair, those same sharp cheekbones.)
call 1-800-577-8372 if you have any information.
(her eyes once brown and lively, now just as blank and gray as the ones on the billboard.)
please help us bring her home.
(they still haven’t found her.)
the whole thing’s kinda funny. it’s been almost a year, and here patricia dempsey was, still looking for her daughter. man, some people just never give up, do they?
(stupid bitch.)
she was his first in violet county. the first one he actually knew beforehand. she’d been sallie’s math tutor. she didn’t come out of her room for two days straight after judith went missing (well, according to their mother, at least)
he almost feels guilty for a moment.
almost.
as he gazes upon her (forever frozen in time), randall finds himself drawn to the glow of the headlights—the way they illuminate her face, like a halo, like she were an angel in a stained glass window. it was almost like a scene from a movie. it was beautiful, even.
(she was one of his favorite girls.)
his hands tremble, pulse quickens as he remembers that november night. she’d kicked and screamed and bit and lost quite a few teeth because of it.
(he still has some of them. and her class ring.)
he can swear he sees accusation upon her portrait. can swear he hears her (and rosemarie loomis and loralei sharpe and rickie lenz and marnie zito and genette boyd and thelma cunningham and jennifer white and cinda lou matheson and and and) curse his name in the silence of the night.
scream all you want, girls. no one could hear you then, no one will hear you now.
with that, randall slides off the hood and climbs into the driver's seat. he checks his watch: 2:15 am. it’s too late to go home, and he was too far anyways. motel it is, then. his fingers are just about to turn the key in the ignition when he pauses.
doesn’t patricia dempsey have another daughter?
yes. yes, she does. judith’s younger sister. she’s one of sallie’s classmates.
arlene dempsey.
now, wouldn’t it be funny to see patricia dempsey’s face---to see her drop to her knees, or hell, even scream---when she finds out she’s lost not one, but both of her children? to the same man, no less.
why, if he could get away with that...
randall kundert grins as he starts the car, his green eyes alight with something both gleeful and terrible.
he glances in the mirror, to the backseat. cora jackson’s clothes are sealed in a box on the passenger's side. her cross necklace is in his pocket. he still hasn’t finished her entry.
he was far from done yet.

Mercury Man : The Last Performance of Orson Welles
Final Performance: Sunday July 28 @ 2:00PM at Mills Hardware (95 King Street East, Hamilton, ON)
Tumblr media
The life and times of an unrelenting, egotistical, artistic almost genius, Orson Welles unfolds onstage for us at Mills Hardware. It is brilliantly and not at all ironically written, produced, directed by Joel Pettigrew who also plays the younger Orson. It is a triumph that this troupe of actors succeeded on such a small stage with such a large undertaking before them. They make it work almost effortlessly and it is a mark of truly professional theatre.
The acting ability of the entire cast is just top notch. They flow into their scenes naturally and keep us engaged as we understand the life of the famous Mercury Man and his eventual decline into what he considered “lesser work” but that still had an impact. Pettigrew especially understands the nuances of Welles as a man AND for his purposes, as a character. He and Older Welles (played equally strong by  Rod McTaggart) inhabit the voice, mannerisms and infuriating nature of Welles. The efforts of  Cora Matheson and Adrian Gorrissen respectfully add a great deal of extra understanding to the people who associated with Welles throughout his lifetime.
Dramatic Hat Productions (Thornhill, ON) establishes a production larger than life, almost like Orson Welles himself. I learned a great deal and found Welles life’s work a fascinating subject for the stage. If you can see the final, final performance Sunday afternoon, I urge you to do so.

A new security law for Hong Kong, approved by China’s parliament last Thursday, “will only punish a small minority” of criminals and poses no threat to foreign businesses or Hong Kong’s stature as a global financial hub.
That was the message from Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam following her whirlwind trip to Beijing on Wednesday to meet with Chinese vice premier Han Zheng and other senior Chinese officials with oversight responsibility for Hong Kong.
The claim that the security law will have no impact on commerce in the territory has been repeated this past week in China’s state-controlled media, and by a chorus of Chinese diplomats, mainland legal scholars, and global companies with business operations in China.
“We reiterate that we respect and support laws and regulations that will enable Hong Kong to recover and rebuild the economy and, at the same time, maintain the principle of ‘one country two systems,'” British banking giant HSBC affirmed in a carefully-worded post on a Chinese social media platform Wednesday. London-based Standard Chartered, as well as British colonial-era trading houses Swire and Jardine Matheson, have offered similar public assurances.
And yet, the new law has sent a chill through Hong Kong’s foreign business community. In private, many expatriate bankers, investors, and business executives in the city profess deep misgivings about the vagueness of the legislation, and how it will be interpreted and enforced.
Of 180 U.S. companies surveyed recently by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, more than 80% said they are concerned about China’s plan to foist new security measures upon Hong Kong. Fifty-three percent said they were “very concerned,” while 30% said they were “moderately concerned.” About 60% predicted the new law would harm their business.
Notably, though, 71% said that, for now, their companies have no plans to move capital, assets, or business operations out of Hong Kong.
Details of the new law remain unclear because the precise language of the bill is still being drafted in Beijing by members of a small committee of senior leaders from China’s ruling Communist Party. It was previously expected that work on the measure wouldn’t be complete until August. Hong Kong representatives to China’s National People’s Congress said Wednesday that fellow delegates are pushing for the new law to take effect before July 1, which marks the 23rd anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty.
Proponents of the measure say it only targets perpetrators of four categories of crime: secession, subversion, terrorist activities and foreign intervention. They insist that law-abiding merchants, whether foreign or Chinese, have nothing to fear.
In an interview with Eastworld, Cora Chan, an expert on constitutional law at Hong Kong University, highlighted multiple ambiguities in the security law as it has been described so far by mainland authorities: How much power will the law grant to mainland security agents operating in Hong Kong? Will it criminalize speech as well as actions? Will final adjudication of the law fall to Hong Kong courts or some other authority?
Chan argues those ambiguities create long-run risks for foreign companies operating in Hong Kong at a time of escalating tensions over trade and national security.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s vow to punish Beijing by stripping Hong Kong of its special trade status with the United States only raises the stakes—and is certain to inflict far more pain on Hong Kong residents than leaders in the mainland.

Cora Matheson, Kararina Hatzinakos, and Mark Kreder from The Spur-Of-The-Moment Shakespeare Collective's Shakespeare in Hospitals
The Spur-Of-The-Moment Shakespeare Collective (SOTMSC) was founded in 2010 by Victoria Urquhart and Sean Horbatiuk, to cultivate a community of emerging artists with a shared interest in Shakespeare and community engagement.
Annually the SOTMSC performs "Shakespeare in Hospitals". A project that is exactly what it sounds like: we create new shows, using Shakespeare’s words, designed specifically to bring to patients in hospitals across the GTA, like Mount Sinai, Sunnybrook and CAMH and more, at no charge to the hospitals or the patients.
The SOTMSC continues to grow and develop projects in 2018 under the mandate of: Establishing and cultivating community engagement in areas in and around Toronto experiencing isolation based on economic, social, and physical barriers. Our mission statement is to marry classical text, contemporary performance, and audience interaction to invite and encourage people to engage with their community.

“Paris.”
Luke jumped when his mother, Lisa, slapped a glossy brochure down on the dining room table in front of his father, Holt. Everyone stopped eating and stared at her. Luke didn’t blame them. This early in the morning the extent of the conversation at the Matheson table was generally limited to a few grunts and an order or two, although usually there wasn’t such a crowd.
Luke slathered his pancakes in butter, then drenched them in syrup, but took a moment to study his family before his first bite. Lots had changed recently. Only last September all his brothers had been single. After today he’d be the only one who could claim that status.
To his right sat Jake, his oldest brother, and Jake’s wife, Hannah. Married just before Christmas, Luke hardly saw them these days because they were both so busy with classes they’d just started at Montana State and their regular work—Hannah with Bella Mortimer, the local pet veterinarian, and Jake with Bella’s husband, Evan Mortimer, a wealthy man with an interest in sustainable ranching.
Holt pushed the brochure out of his way. “Nnnh?” he growled.
“Paris, France,” Lisa said, pushing it closer to Holt again. “That’s what I want for our thirty-fifth wedding anniversary this fall. A trip to the City of Love.” She sat down beside her husband and helped herself to some bacon and eggs.
“Paris sounds lovely,” Morgan said from her seat next to... Read more: Read The Cowboy Earns a Bride (Cowboys of Chance Creek #8)(4) online free by Cora Seton

The Cowboy's E-Mail Order Bride Author: Cora Seton
CHAPTER ONE
“You did what? Ethan Cruz turned his back on the slate and glass entrance to Chance Creek, Montana’s Regional Airport, and jiggled the door handle of Rob Matheson’s battered red Chevy truck. Locked. It figured - Rob had to know he’d want to turn tail and head back to town the minute he found out what his friends had done. “Open the damned door, Rob.”
“Not a chance. You’ve got to come in – we’re picking up your bride.”
“I don’t have a bride and no one getting off that plane concerns me. You’ve had your fun, now open up the door or I’m grabbing a taxi.” He faced his friends. Rob, who’d lived on the ranch next door to his their entire lives. Cab Johnson, county sheriff, who was far too level-headed to be part of this mess. And Jamie Lassiter, the best horse trainer west of the Mississippi as long as you could pry him away from the ladies. The four of them had gone to school together, played football together, and spent more Saturday nights at the bar than he could count. How many times had he gotten them out of trouble, drove them home when they’d had one beer to many, listened to them bellyache about their girlfriends or lack thereof when all he really wanted to do was knock back a cold one and play a game of pool? What the hell had he ever done... Read more: Read The Cowboy's E-Mail Order Bride online free by Cora Seton

Chapter One
That’s close enough.”
Mia Start lifted the shotgun and sighted down its length, her fingers trembling not from fear, but from the bitter cold of the early morning air. In the field of brightness created by her truck’s headlights, her form-fitting, quilted, pink winter coat was the only splash of color in a quarter mile. Beyond her, the snow-covered fields and forests that lined the icy, back-country road were as black as a Montana midnight, even though it was half-past five in the morning.
“For God’s sake, Mia—put down the gun.” Ellis Scranton wore a formal gray wool coat over his customary suit and lifted a hand to screen his face from the truck’s high beams. His Mercedes’ lights were on, too, but weren’t nearly as bright.
He didn’t look armed.
She still didn’t trust him.
“Why’d you want to meet me?” She’d been more than a little surprised to get his text late the night before and barely slept in the intervening hours. Today was Valentine’s Day—hardly the time to meet with your ex. In her fantasies she’d imagined spending the day in bed with Luke Matheson, the cowboy whose spare room she currently rented.
The cowboy she’d never get to be with—because of Ellis.
She and Ellis had broken off their relationship nearly four months ago when she announced her pregnancy and he announced he’d been lying all along; he didn’t love her, didn’t intend to divorce his wife... Source: Read The Cowboy Earns a Bride (Cowboys of Chance Creek #8) online free by Cora Seton
