some stuff i read and watched in november:
taskmaster (s16): what a delight!! what a fucking charming bunch of weirdos, sam campbell somehow everything to me now?? if you think susan wokoma is hot you should watch bbc CHEATERS etc
black swan: first rewatch for ages and it still goes so hard, Love the score, natalie as ever at her best when you can see the gears going in her head, she was perfect!!
the girl with the dragon tattoo: it's been fincher season on blank check, rewatched this for i think the first time since i saw it at the pictures and liked it much more, especially the mara/craig chemistry and all the snow and knitwear etc. it's great when she's like put your hand back in my shirt and he does it
anatomy of a fall: more snow - really liked this - between this and saint omer it's the year of french legal dramas etc. her lawyer with the hair and the chemistry and that other lawyer from 120 bpm!
saltburn: UGH. i'd heard such mixed things and i was actually having fun up until the Turn (although if they're freshers in 2006 they're not the class of 2006 are they emerald) but the ending is So stupid that it made me hate the whole thing lol. imo it's fine to criticise posh people for making shit art!! some of them make interesting art but not emerald fennell!!
the eternal daughter: meanwhile joanna hogg said posh filmmaker rights actually! i loved this, so quiet and haunting and the costumes and the hotel of it all. you can't know your parents really ever!! when i'm old nobody's going to be around to take care of me!! and so like aching as an extension of the souvenir project plus back to the evergreen joanna hogg theme of rich people having an awful time on holiday etc
napoleon: had way too much fun with this, was not prepared for it to be so funny and so full of Guys - paul rhys! tom godwin! sam troughton as robespierre??? mr segundus himself aka edward hogg!!! great year of looking at vanessa kirby's feline face between this and mission impossible. aren't we all just trying to enjoy a succulent breakfast etc
may december: my favourite thing i've seen this year maybe?? natalie and julianne having so much fun with like the monstrous performance mirrors meanwhile charles melton's performance is entirely heartbreaking?? so deeply deeply sad and moving?? goddamn todd haynes
yentl: every talks about how hot young mandy patinkin is in yentl and yet i was Entirely unprepared my god
miami vice: loved this!!! like yes it's mumble city and who knows what's going on but colin farrell and gong li going to havana in a go fast boat to drink mojitos and dance salsa and fall in love??? it's digital cinema and it's very tender!!! brb listening to numb/encore again etc
robert macfarlane, underland: a deep time journey: macfarlane is like my favourite writer on like nature and our environment and this was just so cool, caves and catacombs and nuclear waste under the ice
victoria gosling, bliss and blunder: look, some of us were deeply into and forever changed by the merlin fandom, and that's okay! this was a sort of fun modern take on arthurian legend - parts of it worked much better for me than others (morgan, wayne/gawain) but like where was merlin??? could have done with a bit more allusion to like The Past and The Myth and The Cycle but eh
anne enright, the gathering: can't think of like a better marriage of audiobook and narrator than fiona shaw's performance of this tbh - just pitch perfectly sharp and wounded. families!
michael mann & meg gardiner, heat 2: lol i had a blast with this. like the michael mann bro equivalent of an extremely purple romance novel i guess? audiobook again and the narrator does a fantastic pacino
just a note that i'm taking a bit of a step back from social media stuff for the time being due to continued bad brain/feelings about fandom/writing/self etc and also in a concerted effort to spend a lot less time staring directly into the portal. love you pals 💕

Note
1, 9, 18, 19, and 34
1. How many books did you read this year?
a lot. like a Lot. i can't even remember the amount of books i've read this year.
9. A book that was better than you expected it to be
jurassic park - idk why but for some reason i thought this book was going to be really boring. i guess maybe because i didn't think it would live up to the movie? but i actually liked it better than the movie.
i literally sat there breathlessly flipping through the pages to find out what happened next, because i was so invested. it does start off a little slow and the writing is a little awkward sometimes, but the plot was so engrossing i didn't even care.
18. Least favourite books of the year
- the seduction of water by carol goodman
- the twisted ones by t. kingfisher
- the hollow places by t. kingfisher
19. Best non-fiction book(s) you read this year
i don't think i have one for this year, because i put aside a ton of nonfiction books to read later and haven't got to them yet. but i can tell you some of the ones i'm looking forward to reading eventually:
- yours cruelly, elvira by cassandra peterson
- horror stories by liz phair
- entangled life by merlin sheldrake
- dark archives by megan rosenbloom
- funeral festivals in america by jacqueline s. thursby
- traditions in death and burial by helen frisby
- afterlives of the saints by colin dickey
- cemetery stories by katherine ramsland
- underland: a deep time journey by robert macfarlane
- islands of abandonment by cal flyn
- mr. humble and dr. butcher by brandy schillace
- subject to reality by shilyh warren
- just mercy by bryan stevenson
(sorry this is so long. my nonfiction tbr list is insane. plus i keep getting distracted by fiction books lol.)
34. What’s a book you’ve recommended the most this year?
probably The Weight of Blood. it's really good.

March 2024
Club regulars Calum MacAskill on accordion, Carina Campbell on fiddle and Charlie Oag (drums) began proceedings with a great set of 2/4 marches comprising two compositions of the late Donald MacFarlane from Oban – 'John Peel' and 'Calum MacAskill's Welcome to Oban'. They followed this with a beautiful set of waltzes which was much appreciated by a slightly larger audience including visitors from the USA, Netherlands, Kiltarlity and Inverness.
It was then time for the Brendon family, with young Kiro coming to the stage with his fiddle to play 'The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie'. He then picked up his whistle and performed the 'Skye Boat Song' followed by 'Tha mi Sigh' before Carina joined him on stage for the fiddle duet, 'In Dreams'.
Big sister and fiddler Leela Brendon then played 'Margaret's Waltz' followed by the 'Patchwork Polka'.
Making a most welcome return to the Club was 14 year old Tilly Ng, who last played there in 2018, and she gave the audience a polished performance of tunes on her fiddle. Tilly was then followed by her younger brother, Elliot, on accordion and, making his debut in the Club, who played 'The Dark Island'. Great to see Tilly back with us and hopefully we shall hear them again next month.
MC Julia then welcomed our guest band on to the stage – the Matthew MacLennan Trio – comprising Matthew on piano accordion with Julia Dignan on fiddle, both based in Edinburgh, and Skye born Ally K MacPherson, now resident in Inverness, on drums. They began their evening with a lively set of Pipe Marches which really had everybody's feet tapping. During the first half the band played the twostep 'Bouncing Bobby', a set of fine Irish waltzes and the Ian Holmes composition 'Queen of the South Polka' before rounding off with set of catchy reels.
Julia herself got the second half under way with 'Midnight on the Water' and the 'Ashokan Farewell' followed by 'Westering Home' and the 'Hills of Lorne'. It was then back to the stage for Leela and Carina who gave us a grand fiddle duet of 2/4 and 6/8 Marches followed by the twosteps, the 'Andy Ross Twostep' and Frank Jamieson'.
Another couple welcomed to the Club on a return visit were Sarah Jane Shanklin on fiddle and Hugh 'Shuggie' MacCallum on drums and they were joined on stage by Matthew on accordion.
They gave the audience a cracking selection of 2/4 and 6/8 marches – 'Captain Carswell', 'Maclean of Pennycross', 'Donald MacLean of Lewis' and 'Kenneth J MacLeod'. We hope they will be back to entertain us soon again.
An interesting addition to the programme was then introduced by MC Julia – a 'Stramash' – in which we heard five fiddlers, two accordionists and Hugh on drums give us a fine selection of waltzes – 'Skye Boat Song', 'Margaret's Waltz' and 'Morag of Dunvegan'. This was very much enjoyed and loudly applauded by the audience.
Time then for the guests, the Matthew MacLennan Trio, to take over for the remainder of the evening and they got the feet tapping once again with some 4/4 marches followed by a set of fiddle jigs. A varied mixture of music including Gaelic waltzes, a set of fiddle strathspeys, the 6/8 marches 'Games Day at Aboyne' and 'Braemar Highland Gathering' and the waltzes 'Ally's Waltz' and 'Maggies West's Waltz' made up the second half which the band finished with a fantastic set of Shetland reels.
Next month the Club Meet on Thursday, 4th April in the Royal Hotel, Portree, when it will be the music of the Colin Donaldson Trio, very much a family band from Inverness and the Committee look forward to a good turnout to support them and to encourage all our young local musicians.

Once reunited, the Rebels team up with a tribe of Ewoks to combat the Imperial forces on the forest moon of Endor. Meanwhile the Emperor (Carter Pewterschmidt) and Darth Vader (Stewie) conspire to turn Luke to the dark side, and young Skywalker is determined to rekindle the spirit of the Jedi within his father. The Galactic Civil War has never been more outrageous, as the Rebel forces gather to attack the seemingly defenseless and incomplete second Death Star in the battle that will determine the fate of the galaxy.” ‑ Manu Gino

My other favorite films of 2022, Park Chan-wook’s beautiful romantic mystery Decision to Leave, Kogonada’s stunningly made After Yang w amazing performance by Colin Farrell, Terrence Davies’ underrated and unseen Benediction about Siegfried Sassoon, played by Jack Lowden as a profound British poet and WWI veteran who was hospitalized because of his anti war stance, and tragically had to hide his gay love life. The remarkably witty and funny Nicholas Stoller’s Bros, one of the most funny, smart, and well made gay romances produced by the great Judd Apatow, with wonderful Billy Eichner, Luke MacFarlane. Laura Poitras’ brilliant All the Beauty and the Bloodshed examines the life and career of photographer and activist, Nan Goldin and her efforts to hold Purdue Pharma accountable for the opioid epidemic. Panah Panahi’s touching, and hilarious Hit the Road, a comedy-drama about an Iranian family driving to the Turkish border to immigrate their young adult son out of the country. Max Walker-Silverman’s A Love Song about two older childhood friends who share a night in the Colorado mountains features beautiful performances by Dale Dickey and Wes Studi, a film about real people who have lived their lives without glamour, or luck and how they have continued in spite of life. Finally, S. S. Rajamouli’s entertaining and funny epic RRR. #bestfilmsof2022 #parkchanwook #decisiontoleave #kogonada #afteryang #colinfarrell #terrencedavies #benediction #sigfriedsassoon #jacklowden #bros #nicholasstoller #juddapatow #billyeichner #lukemacfarlane #laurapoitras #allthebeautyandthebloodshed #nangoldin #purduepharma #panahpanahi #hittheroad #maxwalkersilverman #alovesong #daledickey #wesstudi #rrr #rrrmovie #ssramarajamouli https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpsb9McuXZp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Both stories take place in Boston, so I like to think that both characters exist in the same universe and they are friends

do you have any recommendations for nonfiction books? i've been on a death and decomposition kick lately and i love your podcast :)
Sure. My favorite book about death is probably The Work of the Dead by Thomas W. Laqueur. I just finished Dark Archives by Megan Rosenbloom and really liked it. I'm always pro everything by both Colin Dickey and Morbid Anatomy. Similarly, I think most of Caitlin Doughty's books are great. I like Darkly by Leila Taylor, which isn't about death necessarily, but is about the gothic in America. Severed by Frances Larson is pretty good. The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth by Thomas Morris and Quackery by Lydia Kang are probably my favorite medical history books because they're both disgusting- I did an episode on stories from The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth but I didn't even get to the most disgusting ones, many of which made me shriek audibly.
I'm also pretty much always thinking about Underland by Robert MacFarlane and The Body in Pain by Elaine Scarry.
Also if you're into death and decomp, I'd try to JSTOR some texts about Teresa Margolles/SEMEFO, who I've been thinking a lot about- her work is about necropolitics and is not for the faint of heart, especially if you're sensitive to fairly graphic images of the dead, but is always on my mind, and weighs heavily on me when I think about the role of dead bodies socially.
Here is "En piel ajena: The work of Teresa Margolles" by R. Scott Bray, which I have reread several times this year.
