My Thoughts on Gargoyles Issue 8 and Dark Ages issue 2

Gargoyles issue 8 Mayday

Bit late writing issue 8 as i've been busy

Great issue love seeing The Pack again, even though Wolf was in issue 6, we haven't seen Jackal and Hyena since the episode The Green, so it was nice to see them back together. But as Goliath was able to defeat them easily they certainly need another upgrade and possible new members.

I've lost count on how many times Rikers Island has been broken into. even with the extra security.

the prison guard who enjoys shocking Goliath has a redemption moment, he sets Goliath free to stop the Pack.

Love Coldfire, she's the narrator for this issue. love the 2 page spread of her and Coldstone's life.

Brooklyn's still mad at Broadway and Lexington leaving the castle the night before. He's still struggling as leader and in my opinion, I think he should step down as Second in Command when Goliath is back with the clan and give it to Angela or Broadway instead.

There are 2 new characters, Izaak Slaughters associates Murray and lol, Alphabet.

Peter Choy and Rosaria Sanchez are still captured and obviously Dino Dracon, Glasses and Pal Joey are in the Trio masks. I assume Brooklyn, Broadway and Lexington go save them in issue 10.

Can't wait for issue 9.

Gargoyles Dark Ages issue 2 The Draw

Great issue, lots of action and it was heart breaking. Love Drew Moss's art.

New Character Lord Valois, who knows magic, he looks oddly similar to Valmont (SLG issue 10, 11 and 12) and Duval (SLG issue 9). He attacked some Gargoyles with water using magic from a spear, which looks similar to Archmage attacking Goliath, Angela ect with sand in Avalon part 2.

Verity's death, knew it was coming but it's still heart breaking but I was hoping it wasn't going to happen so soon, the art of their reactions of her death was brilliantly done. I wonder if we get to see a Wind Ceremony.

I definitely blame Hyppolyta and Angel for Verity's Death, as they shouldn't been there in the first place. I'm glad that their Rookery Siblings stayed behind.

Angel is captured by Culen, which I knew was coming due to issue 3 description.

Love that Goliath is held back by Mentor.

Culen calls Hudson Rhydderch, I looked it up and it says 'Welsh male given name being a compound of the elements "rhi" (ruler) and "derch" (exalted)' and there is a Rhydderch in 971 in Scottish history, I decided to not look it up just incase it may contain a spoiler.

So Lefty is actually Angel biological Brother, I originally thought he was her biological Father, I assume he was hatched in 898 or 918.

Great issue, can't wait for issue 3.

Ari, I firstly want to say, from the bottom of my heart,thank you for indulging me with all these asdfghj // ask me about my new witcher oc Iolyn!

2. Their mother? How do they think of her? What do theyhate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have?

I think at his core, Iolyn still loves his mother, andcertainly respects all she did to keep her clan going over the years, but.There are parts of him that wish she had been as stern with his older siblings(mostly Rhydderch, given how he turned out) as she was with him. He loves her passionand her fortitude, but hates that she was less of a mother to him and more of ateacher.

She definitely left a mark on him in needing to be disciplined,having control of himself and his surroundings.

3. Brothers, sisters? Who do they like? Why? What do theydespise about their siblings?

Catch me backtracking on my own lore because I quite likethe idea of three brothers in this family, with Rhydderch as the eldest, Meirionas the middle child, and Iolyn as the youngest.

Iolyn doesn’t despise Rhydderch, but he does not like hisegotism, his pride, his arrogance. Rhydderch in general is quite happy to be allthese things, and the animosity between them is quite harsh. The real turningpoint was Rhydderch arranging for Iolyn to be kidnapped and drowned, a planthat failed, which has greatly soured things between them.

Iolyn was always very close with Meirion however, and that’sa connection he misses a lot. He loved Meirion’s compassion and creativity, hispassion for science and new thinking. He didn’t like that Meirion would sometimesside with Meirion growing up, or his foolish notion of sovereign pride andblind loyalty.

5. Were they overprotected as a child? Sheltered?

Iolyn lived a privileged life until around 15 years old. He wasignorant of the wealth his family had, what it truly meant in that he had nevergone to bed hungry, or cold, or to have had well made and fitted clothing. Inthat sense he was certainly sheltered.

Overprotected, however, is a different matter. As lovely as thelife he led was, his upbringing was harsh. His father was kind to him, at times,but it was not an overly loving home.

7. What was the economic status of their family?

I don’t know the exact details of how the noble hierarchy wouldwork in Skellige with the different clans and other noble family’s, but I can essentiallysee the Ó Ruairch family being somewhere in the lower upper-class tier thatruling class. Wealthy enough to own lands and estates and have vassalageprobably, but not so wealthy that they have significant political sway. Sure,they might pitch in some good service from time to time and be recognised, butotherwise only somewhat notable.

11. How do they see themselves: as smart, as intelligent,uneducated?

Iolyn sees himself as educated, but after living a few roughyears on his own and then enduring the witcher trials and training, he understoodthat there was a lot about the world he was ignorant off, things he took for granted,and was otherwise blind to.

13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates?

I think Iolyn liked to learn but hated his schooling. His familywas likely wealthy enough that he had a few private tutors, but his dyslexiamade learning to read quite a struggle and it was something he was likelyshamed for by Rhydderch. He liked his swords and hunting instructors much more.

17. Did they travel? Where? Why? When?

Iolyn travelled (unwillingly) from Skellige to Cintra bymerchant ship when he was 15 after being rescued from drowning when the tidestook him out to sea. He blindly fled Cintra a few years later, ultimately beingrescued and then travelling to the Amell Mountains to train as a witcher. Fromthere, he’s travelled most of the Continent’s west coast, and returned toSkellige once after the Battle of Marnadal where King Eist had died, andsupposedly soldiers bearing his family name.

19. What were your character’s deepest disillusions? Inlife? What are they now?

That family is there to love and shelter and protect you. Thatfamily means unconditional love. Now, family to him is just a word that meanshe bears the same blood as another, and no more.

23. What do they want from a partner? What do they thinkand feel of sex?

In a partner, Iolyn looks for trust more than anything.Trust and honesty and comfort in that he can share parts of himself that hedoesn’t quite know what to do with, and feel safe in sharing that. Not that hesees it right now because I can’t imagine him being open about wantinglove, but I think having someone protect him would mean a lot to him too.

As for sex, I don’t think he’s had an experience to datethat involved romance or any generally sweet or passionate feelings, so he’dsee it as for pleasure and not much else. He isn’t overly driven or compelled,but he enjoys sex and dabbles from time to time if he feels he needs a littlerelease.

29. What is your character’s weaknesses? Hubris? Pride?Controlling?

31. Does your character have children? How do they feelabout their parental role? About the children? How do the children relate?

Iolyn doesn’t have children, but I think he would make for agood father, the kind who does nothing but nurture and support his child, neverraises his voice to them, tries to teach them good life lessons and morals. Hewould love them within an inch of his life and then some.

37. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming alot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?

I can see Iolyn having a creative imagination, but less foranything fantastical like daydreaming and moreso thinking of the next patternfor a piece of pottery or a feature wall in his home.

He doesn’t live in his memories, but they certainly crop upand make him bristle often enough that he feels he can’t escape them.

41. Is your character aware of who they are? Strengths? Weaknesses?Idiosyncrasies? Capable of self-irony?

Iolyn has a lot of self-awareness now, he’s very awareof his flaws both due to his upbringing, the need for discipline that was instilledin him, and his own experiences in seeing the world without the finery thatmade it comfortable. Self-irony however I can’t see though, he takes himself alittle too seriously for that.

47. Do they want to project an image of a younger, older,more important person? Does they want to be visible or invisible?

Iolyn wants to be invisible, absolutely. He wants to beanother nobody in the world that comes and goes without leaving a mark in thelives of others, imposing as little as possible, because he’s less likely todisappoint in that way. He does his utmost to project himself as someone thatis uncaring, cold, ruthless, when in reality there is a deep, hidden away partof himself that misses human connection.

Tessie was a pure blood witch born into the House Prewett. She was the middle child of Dechtere and Rhydderch Prewett. The younger twin sister of Muriel and older sister of Gawain Prewett. Through her brother she is the aunt of Ignatius and Enyalius Prewett. Through her nephew Enyalius she is the great aunt of Molly, Gideon and Fabian Prewett.

She married Usidean MacFusty of the MacFusty clan. Like her husband Tessie is a dragon keeper. She is known as the Red Dragon of Wales or Dragon's Wife. He gifted her a cottage, dubbed Shell Cottage in Cornwall, England as a wedding present. The cottage was formerly used as a private retreat for dragon keepers. Tessie gifted the cottage to her eldest great-nephew Bill Weasley and wife Fleur Delacour.

During the Second wizarding war it was as a safehouse for various members of the Weasley family and other allies of the Order of the Phoenix.

Roderick: A nice guy, but probably insecure about how prepared he is to lead the family. He wanted to stop William's bullying of Lincoln and Woden, but William is stubborn enough that no matter what anyone said he wouldn't change. As a result, Roderick feels like he can't get people to respect his authority. William blatantly ignores it, and he feels that others will see that he can't control him and take advantage of his weakness. (1)

William is definitely the one person that Roderick can’t win over - he’s like a wild dog that can’t be trained or even leashed. Will probably even says as much himself to rub it in and try to goad Rod into smearing his own reputation by reacting poorly to it.

He probably feels some guilt towards Lincoln and Woden due to being unable to stop William from bullying them, but can’t shake the feeling that they think he’s weak as well for being unable to help them (and who knows, maybe they do). He gets a double dose with Woden because he might blame himself for the incident that took his eye. With William he wants to try and be authoritative, but is afraid he’ll reject that too and make his weakness more obvious. (2) 

In dealing with others, he’s good at using a mix of firmness and kindness, a skill learned from trying to balance his siblings differing attitudes.

It seems like he’s got all the skills on paper and can lead people he doesn’t know intimately, but his family is where he falters - I think Woden would find it easier to be better at Rod than at Robin, as there’s a larger age gap and a far less devoted age gap, which means there’s far less overriding how he feels.

Besides that, I don’t have quite as many ideas as the others, but I do have counter questions. What does the leadership of the family entail? 

Some context about the Lincolns:

They’re native to quite a large area in the far east of Anima, though it’s not densely populated. The story goes that they kinda hit a stalemate with Mistral’s army centuries ago thanks to guerilla warfare and fighting on their own turf, in spite of their small numbers, and an agreement was eventually met where they could govern themselves provided that they bow to Mistral’s flag and become part of the empire. Basically ‘we don’t bug you, you don’t bug us and we maybe work together instead’.

They mostly keep to themselves and have some weird customs, but the enmity between them and Mistral has long since faded away. No one really talks about them because they’ve either forgot they exist or they just think they’re weird.

The patriarch of the house is basically sort of the middle management between Mistral’s council and the people of their region. They kinda deal with internal affairs such as crime and agriculture, but if something is ‘big’ enough, they defer to the Mistral council. They have a lot of trade with the Mistral cities, mainly lumber, and the head of the family has to deal with these. Essentially the general idea of any ‘lord’, but Mistral can override them if they see the need to.

How did he get the scar? 

I’m not 100% certain, but it was most likely earned while hunting some large game or during a fight with Will.

Are there other clans in the area? 

Maybe some notable clans living in small villages (most likely on the coastlines for trading) but they all defer to the Lincolns and their home of Knothole, a walled castle about the size of a town. Robin’s mother Artemis Garland possibly came from one of these clans, but the swamp people aren’t terribly fussy about marrying someone from the kingdom at large.

Is he a fighter like Lincoln and William or is he more like Woden?

I’d say he’s a fighter, as making him like Woden would disrupt what makes Woden something of an anomaly - not to mention his allusion, Rhydderch the Generous, had a sword whose “entire blade would blaze with fire […] when drawn by a worthy or well-born man”. Rhydderch was also “never reluctant to hand the weapon to anyone” so maybe he trained Robin and that’s why she uses a sword?
