### Exploring Los Angeles on a Budget: Tips for an Affordable Adventure
Los Angeles, the City of Angels, is known for its star-studded streets, sprawling beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. While it might seem like a city where glamour reigns supreme, you can absolutely enjoy LA without spending a fortune. Here’s how you can explore Los Angeles on a budget, making the most of your trip without breaking the bank.
#### 1. **Travel Smart**
Getting around LA can be one of your biggest expenses. Instead of renting a car or relying on ride-sharing services, consider using public transportation. The LA Metro and bus system can get you to most major attractions like Santa Monica, Downtown LA, and even Universal Studios. A TAP card costs $2 and you can load it with a day pass for $7, offering unlimited rides.
#### 2. **Affordable Accommodations**
Stay outside the pricier areas like West Hollywood and Santa Monica. Neighborhoods such as Koreatown, Silver Lake, or even Downtown LA offer more affordable lodging options. Hostels are a great choice for budget travelers, with prices as low as $30 a night. Additionally, look for hotels that offer a kitchenette to save money on meals.
#### 3. **Eat Like a Local**
Los Angeles is a melting pot of cuisines and many of the best meals are found in food trucks or small, family-run establishments. Explore ethnic enclaves like Thai Town, Little Armenia, and the historic Olvera Street for authentic and affordable meals. Don't miss the chance to try some of the city’s best tacos for just a couple of bucks each.
#### 4. **Free Attractions**
LA is home to numerous free attractions. Spend a day at the beach, visit the Griffith Observatory (free entry), or explore the Getty Center. Enjoy a free concert at the California Plaza, or walk through the Arts District to check out street murals. The city also offers free museum days, so check schedules in advance.
#### 5. **Discount Tickets for Events and Attractions**
Look for discounts on tourist passes and tickets for attractions like Universal Studios, Disneyland, or the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. Websites like Groupon or LA’s official tourism site often feature deals. Also, consider visiting attractions like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on free days.
#### 6. **Hiking and Nature**
One of LA’s greatest assets is its year-round pleasant weather and natural beauty. Enjoy free hiking spots like Runyon Canyon, Franklin Canyon, or the Santa Monica Mountains. Each offers unique views of the city and doesn’t cost a dime.
#### 7. **Shopping on a Budget**
While Rodeo Drive is iconic, shopping there might not be budget-friendly. Instead, head over to the LA Fashion District for wholesale prices on clothing, or explore the flea markets like the Rose Bowl Flea Market for unique and affordable finds.
#### Conclusion
Los Angeles offers a wealth of experiences that don't have to drain your wallet. With a little planning and some local insight, you can enjoy all that this dynamic city has to offer, while keeping your spending in check. Whether it’s soaking up the sun at Venice Beach, enjoying a taco in East LA, or catching a free show downtown, LA is full of affordable gems waiting to be explored. So pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Los Angeles!

Unlocking the Magic: The Best Theme Parks for Your Family Vacation in California
Tumblr media
Ah, California. With its sun-soaked beaches, majestic forests, and bustling cities, it's no wonder this state is a dream destination for many. But what if we told you that besides all its natural and urban wonders, to have a family vacation in California is also home to some of the most entertaining theme parks in the world?
Today, we've handpicked 5 theme parks in the Golden State that promise nothing but laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories. Buckle up, because it's going to be a wild ride. Are you ready?
1. Disneyland and California Adventure: Where Magic Meets Imagination
Ah, Disneyland. Stepping into this park is like entering a storybook. With every corner you turn, a new story unfolds.
Ever dreamt of being a prince or princess? Sleeping Beauty's Castle will transport you straight into a fairy tale. For those in search of a pirate's life, brace yourselves as you sail through the Pirates of the Caribbean. The aroma of popcorn, the twinkling lights, and the sheer joy on everyone's faces make every moment here magical.
Next door, California Adventure celebrates the beauty and spirit of the Golden State. Ever wanted to feel the thrill of flying? Soarin' Over California will let you glide over the state's iconic landscapes. And Radiator Springs? It’s not just a pit stop in the Cars movie, but a lively town where you can race alongside Lightning McQueen. From morning to night, there's never a dull moment at these twin parks.
2. Universal Studios Hollywood: Your Cinema Dreams, Now a Reality
The red carpet is rolled out, and the clapperboard is set. Welcome to Universal Studios, where every day is a movie premiere. As you enter, you're greeted by the sights and sounds of Hollywood's golden era. But this isn't just a walk down memory lane; it's an adventure waiting to unfold.
Feel the chills of the Jurassic era as a T-Rex roars inches away from you in Jurassic World. Or maybe stroll down Diagon Alley, pick up a wand, and sip on a butterbeer? The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is every Potterhead's dream come true.
And the Studio Tour? It’s not just a ride; it's a behind-the-scenes glimpse into where the magic of cinema is crafted. With every attraction, you're not just watching a story: you're living it.
3. LEGOLAND California Resort: Brick by Brick, An Adventure Awaits
Imagine a world where those tiny LEGO bricks come alive. That's LEGOLAND for you. Every structure, from towering castles to bustling cityscapes, is a testament to imagination. As you wander around, it's hard not to be in awe of what can be created from these tiny blocks.
Miniland USA is a delightful miniaturized version of iconic American cities, all built from millions of LEGO bricks. For the knights and princesses, the Dragon Coaster in the Castle Hill section offers a fun ride with just the right amount of thrill. And on a hot Californian day, what's better than the LEGOLAND Water Park? Slide, splash, and play to your heart's content.
But LEGOLAND isn't just about looking and riding; it's about building too. With numerous play areas and build stations, kids (and adults) can let their imagination run wild, crafting their own LEGO masterpieces. It's not just a park; it's a canvas for creativity.
4. SeaWorld San Diego: An Ode to the Oceans and Their Inhabitants
Dive into a world where the mysteries of the deep blue come alive! SeaWorld San Diego isn't just another theme park; it's a celebration of our planet's magnificent marine life. From the get-go, the park immerses you in a rhythmic dance of colors and sounds that mirror the very essence of the sea.
Ever wondered how it feels to be close to a majestic killer whale, its black and white forms cutting through the water with grace? The Orca Encounter show not only showcases these beautiful creatures but also educates visitors about their habits and the challenges they face. For a lighter, more playful interaction, don't miss Clyde & Seamore's Sea Lion and Otter show, where laughs are guaranteed. For more details visit us at https://www.dreamswishestravel.com/.
But it's not all shows and spectacles. The Manta roller coaster allows you to soar like a manta ray, feeling the rush of the ocean breeze. And the Journey to Atlantis? A perfect blend of a roller coaster and a water ride, ensuring exhilarating splashes and delightful giggles.
5. Six Flags Magic Mountain: Where Thrills Meet the Sky
Hold onto your hats, because Six Flags Magic Mountain promises a ride that will make your heart race! As you approach the park, the silhouettes of towering roller coasters reaching for the sky are a testament to the adrenaline-packed day that awaits.
For those brave enough, the X2, with its rotating seats and face-first drops, is not just a rollercoaster; it's an experience that defies gravity. Tatsu, on the other hand, makes you feel like a bird, as you fly over the park with your face down and nothing but the sky above. If you're in for something slightly milder yet equally fun, the classic wooden coaster, Apocalypse, offers a nostalgic ride back in time.
But Six Flags isn't just about the big thrillers. Families can bond over rides like the Road Runner Express or the Magic Flyer, which offer a gentler but equally captivating experience. And for those scorching Californian days? The Tidal Wave water ride ensures a refreshing splashdown that will leave you drenched and laughing.

Tumblr media
Harry Belafonte, wearing a striped shirt, in an recording studio, circa 1957.
In light of the concurrent WGA Writer’s and SAG-AFTRA actor’s strike happening in Hollywood, we felt it fitting to take a look back at a handful of celebs and influential figures who’ve never shied away of speaking up and speaking out for a cause.
It’s only right that we start with one of the giants of the past, civil rights leader and entertainer Harry Belafonte. Though he passed earlier this year, his legacy will undoubtedly live on through many generations as those with pivotal platforms decide to use for the betterment of society.
Tumblr media
Kendrick Sampson speaks during the Alight Align Arise: Advancing the Movement for Repair National Conference on June 09, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Not only does Insecure and How to Get Away With Murder star Kendrick Sampson talk the talk, he actively walks the walk with his non-profit BLD PWR. Sampson regularly champions important causes such as intersectional mental health justice, the criminal legal system, immigration, #SchoolsNotPrisons, Standing Rock, and Black Lives Matter.
Tumblr media
Sidney Poitier, looking straight ahead with his hand wrapped around his chin, circa March 1966.
There’s a reason why the late legendary actor and activist Sidney Poitier will go down in the history books. Thanks to his barrier-breaking roles in film and television, the iconic actor often used his platform to amplify messages for the civil rights movement alongside good friend Harry Belafonte.
Tumblr media
Jesse Williams attends as Anna Wintour hosts Special Screening of “Living” at Crosby Hotel on December 05, 2022 in New York City.
If you didn’t know Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams was about that activism life, then his iconic speech at the 2016 BET awards while receiving its Humanitarian award definitely should have clued you in. Even before that and still after that date, he continues to highlight important issues facing Black Americans today through a myriad of ventures such as Question Bridge: Black Males and more.
Tumblr media
Taraji P. Henson attends the 2023 ESSENCE Festival Of Culture™ on June 30, 2023 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Actress Taraji P. Henson is one of our faves for more reasons than one. Not only does she entertain the masses onscreen, but offscreen she advocates for better mental health resources for people of color through her Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and better access to education and opportunities through her work with the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Tumblr media
Muhammad Ali at a press conference on March 10, 1976, presenting his new autobiographical book ‘The Greatest: My Own Story’ held at The Savoy Hotel in London, UK.
Late legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali may float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, but he also knocked down the evils of society as one of the most unashamed and outspoken figures in the civil rights movement. “Shoot them for what?” ring a bell. Yeah, we thought so.
Tumblr media
John Legend attends the 2023 Milken Institute Global Conference at The Beverly Hilton on May 01, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.
Whether he’s making music to further the cause or giving of his time and resources, singer and activist John Legend continues to play his role when it comes pushing conversations around prison reform, racial inequality and the fight against injustices.
Tumblr media
Billie Holiday records her penultimate album ‘Lady in Satin’ at the Columbia Records studio in December 1957 in New York City, New York.
I only have two words for you that should assure you of legendary singer Billie Holiday’s determination for the fight for fairness and equal rights in the U.S.: “Strange Fruit.” If you don’t know the history behind that song, what all it took to record/perform it, and what happened in the aftermath because of it—might I suggest it this weekend.
Tumblr media
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade attend the reopening of The Landmark at Tiffany & Co 5th Avenue on April 27, 2023 in New York City.
Not only do couple Gabrielle Union and NBA superstar Dwyane Wade constantly speak up for the rights on LGBTQIA+ folks, they also use their platforms to raise awareness for other causes such as women’s rights, violence against women and how to put an end to it, gun violence and more.
Tumblr media
Nina Simone (born Eunice Waymon) sits at a table in the Regency Hyatt Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia, August 9 through 13, 1967.
With a voice that was equal parts haunting and enthralling, late singer Nina Simone was one of the foremost entertainers in the 60s who were intentional about using their platform to highlight racial injustice, violence against Black folks and the struggle for freedom. Her songs and messages are still used as an underlying force to this day.
Tumblr media
Kerry Washington speaks onstage during Variety’s TV FYC Fest on June 07, 2023 in Los Angeles, California
I can’t think of a more visible celeb when it comes to voting and women’s rights than Scandal and Unprisoned star Kerry Washington. Whether she’s speaking at a Women’s March or making TikToks about the fight for voting rights, one thing’s for certain—Washington is and has been about that life.
Tumblr media
James Baldwin in Paris in 1975.
Whether you found yourself deeply engrossed in one of his many books examining the mistreatment of Black folks in America or doing a deep dive into some of his past interviews, late author and activist James Baldwin never minced words and was always able to eloquently express the ways in which the U.S. ought to do better by its citizens. And for that we thank him.
Tumblr media
Beyoncé performs onstage during the “RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR” at MetLife Stadium on July 29, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Yes, Bey technically does a lot of philanthropy through her BeyGOOD foundation, but just like a handful of her musical predecessors, outside of that, she also uses her music to send positive and pivotal messages to the masses whether it’s around police brutality, injustice, or simply taking pride in our skin and in our Blackness.
Tumblr media
Kendrick Lamar attends The 2023 Met Gala Celebrating “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 01, 2023 in New York City
Staying on the music tip, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention rapper Kendrick Lamar. His music has become a battle cry and often an anthem to keep folks going in the fight for equity and equality. The struggle may be real and the task daunting, but just like Kung-Fu Kenny said: “we gon’ be alright.”
Tumblr media
Michael B. Jordan attends the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party on March 12, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.
It would seem Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan’s involvement in activism was already engrained in him thanks to his childhood rearing, but the actor-turned-director didn’t abandon those ideals as he aged. Whether he’s donating his time and resources for LupusLA or marching in the streets in L.A. in support of numerous Black men and women who’ve lost their lives to police brutality—or even portraying one of those men onscreen—one thing’s for certain: MBJ is just ad dedicated to the cause as he is his professional ascent.

I'm back in town! we survived! So as I have said in multiple videos. The husband is about to leave on a 9month rotation and I won't see him again until next year. This was his vacation before he leaves though I'm not sure exactly when he's leaving but it'll be a few more weeks.
I know I was just in Vegas, but that was a holiday weekend so we both had 4 day weekends and we did splurge to get there. I feel like I have to apologize for going on vacation but in hindsight the last time we went on vacation was actually back in December when we were in the process of moving and this year is over half over now...don't even know how that happened.
My MiL wants to try and go to Disneyland for Christmas and invited me so I won't be alone during the holidays but we were both looking at the prices for tickets and I'm not sure thats going to happen.
Anyway I'm going ramble on about our trip more (including comparing Universal orlando vs hollywood) below.
So again, my inlaws live in Arizona so we drove the 8 hours to their house and spent a couple days before picking up my SiL and driving another 8 hours to Los Angeles.
We had discussed what kind of vacation we should take this year. Besides this past Vegas trip my SiL hasn't really had a vacation (kinda) and wanted to go to the beach for the first time ever. Some of the logistics for other trips we were just too..tired...to handle...so we both wanted to see the new Super Mario World so California was an easy enough thing to plan.
When we got to Los Angeles we checked into our hotel..which hilariously was having some sort of water inspection and they gave us an apology letter saying the water would be shut off until the next day T_T so we dropped off our luggage and went and wandered around the City Walk which is like Universals version of Downtown disney. The shopping district. Now I have been to Orlando many many times living close on the east coast. This city walk in Hollywood was super tiny. We ended up going to go see the new SpiderMan movie which was fabulous. Little long, but wonderful. Ate dinner and then went to bed.
Next day we actually went to Universal Studios and I have some safety issues. Now US really has a pretty view up on their hill but somebody didn't think about these logistics of these escalators. We got let into the park early but the mad rush for mario at the bottom of the 3 escalators felt like a dangerous human stampede. I don't know how people werent falling off or getting squished and dying. Thats dangerous. And I'm sure they had them but I didn't see any elevators. My FiL is disabled and though he wasn't with us, I honestly don't know how anybody in a wheelchair or scooter manages to get around this park at all. Its small and cramped and very dependent on going up and down hills. I will say too that I was actually disappointed with the Mario ride. The land looks cool even though it isn't magically hidden. Like at disneyworld or universal orlando they hide the buildings and structural supports within a facade so you "forget" you're in a themepark. Mario you could see the wirings and supports..which was fine..but the ride sucked. I was honestly expecting some sort of 3d immersive ride. Maybe not a real rollercoaster but one that felt like you were on one. This was just another Buzz Lightyear or Men in Black. Instead of lasers you are shooting turtle shells. 8( sad. I didn't get to try any food because we planned poorly and are broke (not really but yeah).
I will say that Jurassic World is great. I wish they would update the one in Orlando. I also really enjoyed the studio tour. And I could be totally wrong but I think we accidentally saw a celebrity from afar idk. But I liked how they incorporated F&F and kingkong into it. I'm not a fan of the individual rides over in Orlando.
Overall we finished the park quickly. Very small. P.S. we did single rider for mario because it was a 2 hour wait from rope drop and I aint about that wait. Near walk on with single rider.
And then the next couple of days were spent at Santa Monica Pier and Little Tokyo and Hollywood BLVD. I had no desire to visit Hollywood at all but we accidentally drove by the Line Friends store and miniso so we stopped. I was hoping for korean make up and then I just like looking at anything cute. We did see an angry woman screaming at somebody who then pulled her naked boobs out and swung them like nunchucks and then saw another naked man applying sunscreen(?). So that was about accurate to what my inlaws said Hollywood was like, I guess.
In Santa Monica we ran into 2 celebrities. One, I don't know who he was but a group of Chinese tourists were taking photos of him. I asked who it was and they showed me what looked like an IMDB page for him but I couldn't read..the..chinese..its fine..he was handsome and smelt good up close?
and then Logan Paul was filming literally behind me. Photo was posted to twitter. So like..catch my butt on his youtube later I guess. I had a simba backpack on.
But mainly I wanted to go to Koreatown or Little Tokyo. For times sake, we went to Tokyo because I was told its less "ghetto" and just better. Tokyo I had high hopes may have art supplies but korea had make up..ugh...I did see art supplies in Tokyo but the amount of people just brought on stress anxiety. One of the bookstores I went into had sets of 5 copic markers for 7.99...that is...impressive. Looking back theres some stuff I kind of wish I'd bought but I got stressed out I left the shop.
but overall, I could spend another day or two for sure. But I know we got scammed a bit with parking costs, traffic made me nauseous, it was kind of cold too...I was honestly expecting weather to be like Florida (hot and muggy), so I brought summer clothes and ended up cold. And oddly enough, I think I also expected the landscape to look like florida. I've definitely heard of the "hollywood hills" but in my mind I was still expecting swamp..and yes..LA is very dirty. I don't think I need to live there. I do however like some of the architecture on the outskirt cities.
also, I finally got some decent pastries and a matcha coffee. /highfive/

Amazon Driver Pilfers Check: Video Shows
We're used to seeing porch pirates steal packages on videos, but it's usually not your Amazon driver who does the stealing. But now, a family says an Amazon driver stole a check from their porch after making a delivery. The family says he put the check in the bank and got cash from an ATM. All of it was caught on video by their doorbell camera. The family says the check was left on the door for a family member's employee to pick up. Based on the video, the man filled out some delivery information on his phone while standing on the porch. He then kicks an envelope off the porch again before picking it up off the ground and running down the road. They told Amazon about the driver and are still waiting to fill out a police report until they hear more from Amazon. The driver came to deliver her son a $10 box of crayons, but he left with a nice check. Shina said she got the money back and gave it to her helper, which is good. Read more.

What I'll remember about April are basically two things: this year's adventure in California and Linzy's shows with The Little Lies, Midnight High, and Annie J.
Oh and... taxes, getting moss off the roof, moving big, heavy rocks, and, of course, Daisy Jones & The Six. 😁
First: this year's adventure in California.
We start out at the beginning of April, timing that, quite perfectly overlapped with everyone else's Spring Break. So we traveled with a lot of travelers and we theme parked with a ton of theme parkers and we camped with a lot of campers.
Even Linzy was down in California for the first few days of our adventure. Not with us but in San Francisco catching up and having her own adventure with friends from Cornish who call The City by the Bay their home.
At the same time, the director of the Archbishop Murphy Wildcat Band was even closer to where we landed in southern California. Our friend, Keith Curtis. You see, he and the 2022-2023 Wildcat Band were finishing their second of two performances, the first at Disneyland and this second one at the Five Towers stage in Universal Studios Hollywood's City Walk. Which is where we caught up with him and spent some lovely time comparing recent histories.
Tumblr media
A coupla days later, we got the chance to experience a full day at Universal Studios where we did everything Harry Potter and we took the studio tour that was a wonderful bit of Memory Lane for us. Across the entire experience, we managed a pretty decent balance of fun and relaxation. Huzzah!!!
Tumblr media
One of the iconic features of these family trips is renting an Escape Campervan as our mini RV. Last time here we scored Nessie from the Seattle (ish) location. This year we scored Big Foot from the Inglewood location.
YESSSS!!!
Tumblr media
Eventually we hit the road in Big Foot and launched ourselves into a different world where we were seemingly able to live more experience during the course of each day than we usually accomplish living our city life. In a way, the camp experience is more coordinating and collaborating with friends and family. It's more sitting around the table just chattin'. It's more time around the campfire... just chattin'. It's more together. Time definitely moves at a slower pace and we're definitely in no rush. We're not motivated to hit the gas. We can take our time. And we can choose to be distracted by nothing in particular. Sometimes several nothings.
During our time camping, we had the opportunity to play a lot of loud and boisterous Uno with teenagers. We found ourselves on a wildflower covered hill on the edge of nowhere taking pictures of orange and yellow loveliness. We were stunned by the nearness and bigness of the moon. We were blessed not once but twice to visit Kimmer's aunt who's in the best hands for memory care. She looks great...
Tumblr media
...plus she was more engaged this time around, conjuring a bit of her old self with that laugh and smile of hers. And finally we had the absolute fortune to hang out around a campfire with family and friends, an experience ending in well wishes and fare-thee-wells all around, along with a deep conviction that this experience is very good for the soul.
Tumblr media
Moving right along, well... almost right along, a bit of work also found some space within our adventure. You see, a business consulting challenge came up for Kimmer that was gonna need some input by the time we got back. So over the course of our time away we took some opportunities here and there and there to talk it through. And between that, as well as research on Kimmer's part, a plan was formed that, by the end of the month, has proven to be a solid plan. An even better path forward.
Tumblr media
Not long after we returned, Linzy had a gig with The Little Lies at the Old Edmonds Opera House. The gig kicked off a bit of a Hell Week for her as the next day she had rehearsals for two other bands, Midnight High and Annie J, both with performances the coming Thursday at the Sunset Tavern.
After that, it was a steady schedule of practice, rehearsal, and work through Thursday night's performances which were brilliant, by the way. 😁😁😁
In semi-related news, a friend whose last album Linzy contributed vocals to and with whom she collaborated on one of the songs on that album, and who subsequently performed a couple concerts with them... asked her to collaborate writing songs in the fall for the next album.
Tumblr media
In other, grown-up news 😉, we turned our taxes in right before the post office closed at 6 on the 18th... then celebrated the craziness of that day with some well earned relaxing at Pub 70. Also, we spent the last two weeks of the month with a bit of landscaping activity and cleaning the moss off the roof. Real home owner-y type things to do 'cause for sure no one would willingly undergo the tedium of removing moss from a roof or moving a bottomless pit of seriously heavy rocks from one part of the yard to another.
Of course Kimmer loved the experience. 😊
Tumblr media
Of course the experience I loved (we all loved, actually) was experiencing our way through the first half of Daisy Jones & The Six in April. Linzy's a HUUUUUUGE fan and insisted we all watch it together.
Of course now we're hooked.
youtube
In the end, April was more packed than usual. More fun. More relaxation. More hard work. And definitely more super sized memories.
The beginning of the month did wind up being a break of sorts, a good opportunity to peace out, re-energize, consider a bunch, course correct a little, firm up the picture going into the coming months that's for sure a different picture than the one we had before we hit April.
So that's four months down. Eight to go.
And now...
May.
🙂
