Collection of Research on Chinese Typography (中文文字设计研究选集) A three-volume collection of on-going research and writing about typography and design in China. Includes coverage of typography and design's history and development, conventions and contemporary practices, as well as applications in transcultural contexts.
Available at Draw Down Books
This set has been produced by The Type (Type is Beautiful), an online platform that has promoted an awareness of typography and design to the Chinese-speaking public for over ten years. The Type introduces Western typographic theories and knowledge to its readers, conducts independent research on Chinese typography, and aims to address both typography education in China, and the lack of exchange Chinese designers have typically had with the international community of designers.
This compact set includes:
上海活字:管窥现代中文字体设计史 Shanghai Type: A Slice of Modern Chinese Type History
The development of Chinese type design since the foundation of the People’s Republic in 1949 has cast a significant influence on contemporary practice. Yet this history has remained as much a mystery to the outside world as to local designers. This volume, based on designer Li Zhiqian's Shanghai Type research project, illuminates a portion of modern Chinese type design's history—tracing how it began as a groundbreaking state-initiated endeavor, and then gradually was transformed, fading in the age of commercialization. Consultant: Chen Qirui. Edited by Richor Wang.
跨文化字体设计:中文语境下的讨论 Transcultural Type Design: a Dialogue from China
Among Chinese-speaking designers, discourse around transcultural typography is still in its infancy. This volume is the record of the first of a series of open discussions moderated by The Type, which addresses both this global trend as well as the debate and strategies that are specific to the Chinese context. Moderated by Mira Yang, with panelists Peiran Tan, Li Zhiqian, Zheng Chuyang, Du Xiyao, Tien-min Liao, and Roman Wilhelm.
孔雀计划:重建中文排版的思路 Kǒngquè: Restoring the Mindset of Chinese Typesetting
The convention and wisdom of Chinese typography that was developed over centuries has failed to be inherited by designers today. This is caused partially by the domination of Latin-orientated computer software, coupled with negligence in Chinese design education. The Kǒngquè project aims to fill this gap by revisiting the typographic traditions of China in the modern context and restoring the traditions and mindset of native Chinese typography. By Eric Liu.

Here we go! I have some smaller books to share as well, but I've been absolutely VIBRATING with excitement to share a BIG one, and I'm going to indulge myself and post that today, then figure out words for the rest. Because I bound a new cnovel. Check it out, guys, I bound jwqs/clear and muddy loss of love :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let me indulge myself and backtrack a little! First, these are quarto books, so they're short. But I think these average a little under 500 pages each, and jwqs is a LONG book (my beloved), and this adds up to a total eleven inches of lesbians. More like twelve once they're in their cases. It's over a million characters in Chinese and I think the English translation comes in somewhere around 890k, it's HUGE
Tumblr media
Making these books was SO FUN, I hadn't read jwqs and still haven't, and will probably read on my phone when I do. I don't have any exciting photos of the typesetting, but I knew this was an imperial succession story, and that made me nervous, those stories don't always click for me. Well, the process of typesetting and adding footnotes for this beast definitely confirmed that I'm going to have a good time with this thing when I have the time to read it, but there was also so much going on that only the vaguest of spoilers sank in. I went into an absolute FRENZY of typesetting, and after I printed, cut and folded it, well. That was one afternoon of sewing. You're looking at the reason I'm scrambling to make up a few hours of missed work, hahaha
After that, I needed cases. At the very beginning of march, I received a shipment of some FASCINATING bookcloth. It's called Duo, and it's made by layering a thin gauzy fabric of one color over paper of a different color. Depending on the combos, you get a really cool range of color-shifting effects. And they've gone out of production! But I was part of a group order to get some of the goods, and hadn't yet finished a new project. Reader, I went for it.
Tumblr media
That purple and green is bananas!!!! It's so hard to photograph, this midnight picture of a few cases is one of my most successful attempts to capture the full range up close. Originally I'd been thinking of trying to evoke imperial gold, but I figured this was still the kind of drama and luxury suited the book, and also something something the hidden colors suited Qi Yan's character. I tied it back a little to the imperial gold with the endpapers, then titled them in silver foil, since the endpapers had silver in them.
Tumblr media
But once the books were made, I felt like it wanted something... more. Something like a BOX!
And me, I chase novelty. A set this large would be tricky for anything clamshell, but a slipcase for all seven would leave books tipping all over if it was wide open, but putting walls between slots would be demanding in terms of precision and would risk similarly-sized books getting stuck in the wrong slots. Then I remembered learning about slipcases where you could put in a little insert to support the weight of the text block, and the concept SNAPPED into place.
Tumblr media
Colors aren't going to photograph well at midnight, but I made the supports using the scraps and off-cuts from my endpapers, to tie it back into the bindings. The back of the case is lined in more of the duo, and the walls are lined with a faux leather bookcloth I like a lot, it feels buttery smooth and seemed like a good neutral material to tie the papers and bookcloth together. I listened to some of the DEEPEST layers from the nine-hour conspiracy theory iceberg video while I was working on this, haha, it was a TRIP.
Tumblr media
And in the end, each of the supports is sized to comfortably sit in the smallest of the volumes, and evenly spaced, so I believe it will take the books in any order with no problems. It's easy to grab the books without having to cut notches into the walls to grab them from. And even though weight is less of an issue for quarto sizing, the books in here have their weight supported no matter what angle the box is at! I'm so, so pleased with how this concept worked out and definitely plan to do more with it in the future.
So there we are! Jing Wei Qing Shang! I had such a fabulous time with this project, and I'm so excited to get to share it with all of you. The story was fun to work with, the bindings and box were fun to make, and everything here came together just as well as I could possibly have hoped. I'm so proud of this, and incredibly, incredibly excited to show it to you!

Hello, I spent the week possessed by yet another bookbinding ghost where I re-create a Chinese 4-hole uneven stab/thread binding but with a left to right orientation cause English, and challenged myself to typeset it without a proper program aka I abused the tables and draw triangle functions in LibreOffice.
Here's some in progress and completed inside photos along with the 'ah fuck I misaligned this' evidence

At a Glory convention, Dai Yanqi meets Ye Xiu who is helping Su Mucheng buy her favorite doujinshi. They surprisingly hit it off as they browse through all the doujinshi about their peers and talk about Glory.
About the book

PROGRAMS USED: Affinity Publisher (typesetting), Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo, LibreOffice Writer (QR codes), Bookbinder-JS (PDF imposer)
BINDING STYLE: Split-board binding, French double-core endbands
(Belated) Binderary Book 2024
My first year participating in Binderary and I'm 2/2 with my goals, albeit slightly late (even with the added leap day).
Goal No. 1: Bind a book!
This fic is an orphaned work, with no author available for me to reach out to. Convenient, since it was a last-minute decision.
Goal No. 2: Finish typesetting the fic that got me into this whole bookbinding/fanbinding hobby!
Bad Boys JEDI Style is a 217 chapter, 908k word "comedy of errors: in which our heroes are recruited to film a reality holo-drama". Much to my despair, the fic I loved had been deleted from every site it was uploaded to, and I was left kicking myself for not having downloaded a copy from AO3.
Shout out to Kam and Lofe, whose wonderful Binderary demos were put to use in the making of this book! Kam's French Double-Core endbands demo was super helpful, sizing up the 'textblock' and components made it easy to actually see what's happening with the sewing. Loffe's demo introduced me to the split-board binding technique and, sleep-deprived hiccup notwithstanding, I think I might find it easier then bradel style binding! Need to bind more books to know for sure (such a hardship 😔).
In other new-s, I took my dad's recent workshop baby for a spin. The bookbinding plough works like a dream! I tried a hidden fore-edge painting for the first time (just a solid colour), but the purple is lost under the Payne's Gray basecoat I applied to the silver painted edges. Adding ribbon to the cover was also new (mostly due to the fact that I never remember until the endpapers are already pasted down).
Tumblr media
On the Design
Cover
This is a Team Thunderclap!Ye Xiu AU, so the cover was based on Team Thunderclap's uniforms from the donghua (from the one screencap of the team I found, see below): purple across the shoulders and forearms of their jackets with a yellow stripe down the centre. I added silver ribbon as a nod to the white of the jackets as well as the grey gear of the team's logo. Also in reference to the title: yellow=sunlight, silver=moonlight.
Tumblr media
Title Page
The title page stumped me for a while. While brainstorming title page design ideas, I thought about what the title means. In English it's poetic but nonsensical, so I wondered if maybe it held some meaning in Chinese?
As it turns out, it does. Kind of. Maybe. (If I stretch and reach for it, it makes sense). According to a quick search of one webpage for each query, "'White Moonlight' usually refers to a person or thing that is elusive in the heart, has always been loved, but cannot be touched" or "an 'unforgettable first love'." The sunbeam itself might be Ye Xiu, the figurative ray of light, the hero, the gaming idol. Or 'catching a sunbeam' could refer to how "sunflowers turn their heads to catch every sunbeam."
The potential meaning I have cobbled together is how Dai Yanqi turns Ye Xiu's head and captures his heart by sharing the (SanXiu-ified) story of Su Muqiu, the aforementioned white moonlight. Is this what the author intended? Who knows. But it does seem plausible enough to inspire me.
I ended up using both the idea of sunflowers and Thunderclap's uniforms (again). Lightning referencing the team's logo, and also the white colour of a flash of lightning which is kind of like moonlight. The logo's background is blue, as is the uniform as seen on the cover of the manhua featuring the captain Xiao Shiqin (see below), so I made the background blue-purple.
Endpapers
Tumblr media
The (not-actually-)sunflowers carried over to the endpapers, as well as the grey colour from the gear in Thunderclap's logo.
Endbands
Kept these simple. A solid purple, as close as I could get to the bookcloth. I didn't want to draw attention away from the stripes on the covers or the silver edges.
Probably could've gone for thicker cores.
The text
For the scene breaks I used a special character of a gear. The cog also looks like a sun. Which is fun because it can reference Thunderclap, the title (sunbeam), and my design choice of sunflowers.
I reused the lightning image at 50% opacity as a background to set apart the backmatter.
Misc.
Recently, I've begun to increase my efforts of preseving fanfiction and safeguarding the stories I love from purges and takedowns. (Sparked by the December 2023 scandal about Sony announcing an upcoming removal of content including the movies and TV shows that people have purchased).
This fic has been archived via the Wayback Machine at https://web.archive.org/web/20240215155152/https://archiveofourown.org/works/37414021?view_full_work=true.
Also, curses be upon Rawpixel. Since the time that I had downloaded the images, they have now be placed behind the premium user paywall (along with a number of other graphics and elements that used to be free).

First of all I want to apologize for the radio silence lately. We had almost finished wrapping up chapter 12 of Hitsuji when my daughter was born in March. If I get a free moment that's not spent with her it's usually spent eating or sleeping, just pure survival mode. My computer's been gathering dust. She's sleeping on me right now actually.
Anyway, I haven't been paying attention but it seems Tokyopop has released the first two English volumes of Acid Town digitally with the third volume coming next week. There are also paperback editions on the way, which is great news and a little wild to me that I might eventually see it on a bookshelf in the US.
If you're at all suspicious about the quick turnaround of these volumes, I think you're right. I posted some pictures here comparing pages from the original scanlator's work to the official English version. Here are my thoughts:
I've been typesetting for scanlations for years now and I've come a long way and still have a lot to learn, but to this day I continue to use rules and such that I learned from the original scanlators for Acid Town. Honestly the typesetting for both the scanlation and the official version are not fantastic, but the official version feels especially slapdash. It's not that big a deal to me that the SFX aren't replaced but it does show a preference for speed over quality. The upper right panel of Tetsu where the text is not centered is especially egregious to me and shows a carelessness not only on the typesetter's part but also whoever QC'd the page, if anyone did. There are also wildly different text sizes between the two neighboring bubbles. The original scanlation I have an issue with in the sense that too much text is squeezed into the bubbles and comes too close to the bubble edges... sometimes this is hard to avoid but it's almost every bubble. When typesetting I'm always thinking about how best to center the text and break up words for readability. The official version succeeds a little better there and is less overwhelming to look at.
I've always had an issue with the liberal and often incorrect translations from the original scanlation, but I have to admit when put side by side like this, the official version is missing a lot of character in the dialogue. I'd love to compare against the Japanese text but I'm nap trapped and my Japanese volumes are in another room, so maybe later, LOL.
I still need to buy the full volume but I am curious about the translations for names, really curious. So far everything looks about the same but they shorten Hyoudou to Hyodo... that's kind of normal when transliterating long vowel sounds in Japanese to English, but I always prefer the spelling that matches what you'd actually see written in Japanese, which is an o with a u. If you were to spell Hyoudou in Japanese without the u's it would be wrong. I'm mostly wondering how they translated the Chinese names though (Wang, Heilong, etc. Spelt Wan and Heiron in Japanese katakana, but the katakana is only intended to help read the Chinese characters and shouldn't be the basis of the English transliteration).
I'll come back with more thoughts once I get a moment to purchase the full volumes, but I would also love to hear others' thoughts if you've had a chance to read the new editions.
Chapter 13 of Hitsuji is also in progress and the translation for chapter 53 of Acid Town is done, but I'm a little uncertain what will become of that now that the official licensed volumes are out. I might come back to this later.

btw if you ever can't find an epub/pdf/downloadable danmei english fan translation, my advice is to check libgen first (and annas archive if that doesnt work) but if you STILL cant find it:
dm me and if i have the epub in my personal danmei gdrive folder i can send you a link (this also applies to my typeset pdfs of misvil and devil venerable and any danmei i typeset in the future, but the price is that if you find an error in those you have to tell me about it). or if it's in my ficbinding git repo i can send it to you but it may be in a weird format
if it's a non-downloadable google doc you can usually still download it as html if you disable js (on firefox you can use browser extensions like noscript or umatrix for this but im not sure what's available on chrome), change the end of the link from /edit to /mobilebasic, and refresh the doc (then use your browser to save as html). or if that doesnt work try this script. once you have html you can use pandoc to convert it to whatever format you like, including plaintext (although i've had issues with pandoc unicode handling so chinese characters may get mangled).
fan translators often post their work on like wordpress websites or whatever with more or less static html; you can use either your browser or the command-line tool curl to save individual chapters as html or (if the url has a friendly format) a simple bash+curl one-liner (e.g. for i in {1..30}; do curl -L https://foobartranslates.wordpress.com/workname-chapter-$i -o workname_$i.html; done) to bulk download (and then convert from html if you like, as above)
some translation websites (e.g. chrysanthemum garden) are somewhat more complicated and use js to load in the chapter text, so the browser save button will work (if you have js turned on) but curl won't. if you want to write a bulk download script you'll probably need to use webdriver. i wrote a chrysanthemum-garden-specific download script a while back which i can send you over DMs (if the work is password locked you'll need to join the discord for the password, which updates weekly) or, if that's too technically intimidating, i can run the script myself and send you the output
remember: anything on the internet can vanish at any time; downloading things for your personal archive is always morally right 👍

The lowdown about bootleg Mandarin MDZS versions
Things happening on Twitter the last few days, plus messages from people, have prompted me to do a little digging into the various versions of MDZS Mandarin texts floating around in the fandom. Here is my finding. If you are working from texts with this cover page, yours is a bootleg:
Tumblr media
Here is MXTX’s Weibo post in 2016 warning people about this specific bootleg: https://m.weibo.cn/status/3997296217680195?sudaref=m.weibo.cn&display=0&retcode=6102
Tumblr media
MXTX: Something indescribably amazing happened today. It seems that someone has brazenly used my portrait and ID on Lofter to masquerade as me and declare a "Newly Revised" Edition of Modao. After multiple reports, they still persisted in declaring ownership of the text. After that, I blocked the account using LOF customer service. Immediately after, someone registered a new fake account with unclear intentions. To avoid future repeats of such an absurd thing, I want to state that my only external social platform account is this Weibo. If I open another account, I will announce it. The new revised version of Modao will be announced only on JJ. Anything else from anywhere else that claims to be me is a fake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I checked into this particular version MXTX talked about here and found it to be spread to a lot of places, mostly story hosting sites on Chinese internet space and even on many shopping platforms. It even has an ISBN and publisher information, so it looks amazingly legitimate and has probably fooled a lot of people.
Tumblr media
But an ISBN search reveals nothing:
Tumblr media
Apparently, this is not the only fake floating around because MXTX had to make another post to let people know there is only a single legitimate version of MDZS in Simplified Mandarin (2018).
https://m.weibo.cn/status/4313476996219890?sudaref=m.weibo.cn&display=0&retcode=6102
Tumblr media
MXTX: The first volume of Modaozushi in simplified Mandarin. Nothing was edited or modified. It's very difficult to pass the inspection. Wuji is the name of the first volume. The second (middle) volume will have a new name. There's a poster gift along with the book. If you really want it, you have to work hard and grab it yourself. This version has the 'lotus pod' extra, no other new extra, along with three pages of handwritten postscripts. This is the only genuine version in simplified Mandarin. It's in journal-style design and typesetting. Every other version in simplified Mandarin is a fake. Book purchase link:
This is how the authentic copy looks:
Tumblr media
So there you have it. Now excuse me, I’m gonna be off ordering this one specifically.

Another Fanbinding Post!
Tumblr media
My latest project was @dragongirlg-fics's “Don’t Forget” and now that the gift copy has arrived, I can finally post about it! :D I read this fic very early on when I came into the fandom and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since. When I was suddenly hit with an idea for the case design, I decided to spontaneously do this binding because the idea was taking up too much headspace. XD
My camera always struggles with capturing the blue of this particular paper, and that ribbon is silver silk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d also gotten it into my head that I wanted illustrations for the chapter headers and so I went and drew them myself. I hadn’t drawn in forever and it’s not like I was ever really great at it, but I think they turned out well enough.
I also drew the title picture to resemble the painting mentioned in the fic, though I couldn’t do the watercolours as I didn’t have the right paper for that. A bit of editing in Photoshop it was, then.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was the first time I tried a three piece bradle binding and the paper for the case fought me a lot… My copy has some wrinkles and stuff because of it, as the way the case is assembled did not sit well with the paper. It might also be that I didn’t let the paper rest enough after putting the paste on, IDK.
I did all the case titling and decorations with a hot foil pen and that fought me, too, as all those parts that needed colouring in didn’t work so well on the first try. Second time worked better, at least, as did the cover assembly in general, as I now knew what to look out for.
That second time around, for dragongirlG's copy, I also pressed the shit out of those case boards after I'd glued the paper on. XD
Tumblr media
With the case design, I wanted to lean a bit into the bunny theme of the fic, because those bunnies show up all the time. :D There's a lovely, important Chinese quote as well that seemed to fit onto the back cover (and OMG I'm so happy that I managed to write it straight! XD).
The typeset wasn’t too difficult, overall, though Open Office did annoy me at the beginning as it refused to format the pages correctly, which led to me just deleting the whole thing and starting over. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are some things that didn't work out perfectly, like a crease in the endpaper that should not have been there. But luckily, the pattern on the paper kinda hides that. XD My copy also has some little hot foil smears here and there because OMG people, I was really struggling there. XD
Overall, though, I’m really pleased with how this book turned out! I added the silk ribbon on the cover because I felt like there was something missing with all that dark blue… It also meant going hunting for the right silver ribbon. XD
Materials used:
Printed on Clairefontaine DCP 100g (long grain)
Case + endpapers:
- booklinen Brillianta - Efalin paper - French marbled paper 120g - hot foil (on brand)

Chapter 99 translator's notes thoughts
ACTUALLY unorganized thoughts this time unlike last time
first off, here's page 2 without any text.
Tumblr media
These two use the same two kanji in their names (田岡 taoka and 岡田 okada) which is just a really funny sight in jp and cn but doesn't come across nearly as well in english.
Tumblr media
This is called a "trompe l'oeil", they're very fun to look at. The word used here in japanese is 騙し絵 damashie, meaning "trick painting"
these two are also in my mangadex tl notes page, but i wanted to expand on them a little here
Tumblr media
the chinese translation made up a totally different title for this chapter, insane. it says "picking a dorm room", while the jp says "boys' dorm tour"
I didn't want to use "tour" though, since there's already been 2 recent chapters that also had it in the title (94 and 95). this wasn't a problem in japanese, these 3 chapters use 3 different words for it, but "tour" is the only english word that really means "tour".
Tumblr media
while on the topic of repeating words, sano just keeps saying ちなみに chinamini (by the way). 4 times in like 7 pages. if i actually wrote "by the way" that much you would have noticed it. (he heard me complain about him always changing the subject with "i dunno" and doubled down, real)

i've figured out my 2nd favorite part of translating, after seeing people's reactions and thoughts: typesetting the silly little background details
by the way, that piece of paper above the umbrellas is for kokkuri, basically japanese ouija board.
Details about the dorms
First off, this tweet from 2020 that sensei actually deleted?!?!?
Tumblr media
(It still shows the preview on discord though. Nothing is sacred on the internet)
Stuff about the Hyakki Academy dorms Hijita + Nyuudou, Mujina + Tama room together Sano + Mame, Toubyou + Kurahashi, Gida rooms alone Ogoso (1 person room), Fuji + someone from another class, Odawara (same as Fuji), these three are in a different dorm. There's a cafeteria, but its quite expensive, so many students cook for themselves Also, Miki + Hatanaka's room was renovated and later became Hijita + Nyuudou's room.
It was deleted sometime between july 2022 (when i posted that discord message) and today (probably sometime in the past week or month). I mean, understandable you'd delete tweets with outdated info, I'm just surprised she remembered she tweeted this at all
So, what's changed is Ogoso (had) a roommate, Mujitama and Sanomame and Kuratoubyou are in a different dorm.
I'm inclined to believe Mikihata and Hijinyuudou still have the same room though, which would mean building two already existed when Hatanaka was in school.
(Side note, the principal won the lottery and built the new school building in Hatanaka's 2nd year, so about 9 years ago. I believe this is after brogida destroyed the school in ch26. From these two tweets)
Tumblr media
From the tweet linked on the image, here's how the dorms are set up
Tumblr media
According to ch 2, the faculty dorm is fairly close to the school itself.
Tumblr media
And according to ch 4, dorm building 2 is about 7 minutes away from school.
Tumblr media
Again from ch 4, it already says "building 2" here, and it's drawn exactly like in ch 99, so that's probably part of the setting that was planned all along. THAT SAID. GOD I WANT A MAP OF HYAKKI ACADEMY ISLAND. Where the hell are all these places???
Tumblr media
Assuming 305 means floor 3 room 5, it would mean all these other guys are also on floor 3. completely useless info but yknow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The principal's house is actually shown in ch 57 (pointed out in this tweet), it's a building connected to the back of the schoolhouse. The 3rd floor where that bridge connects is the principal's office, the other floors are his private quarters. So this is what "Sano spends his long vacations at the principal's home" means, it's just.... at the school.
THAT SAID. What does "the last few years" mean?? Sano would have only been at Hyakki for 1 year, unless the principal was also looking after him the years prior for some reason??
Tumblr media
Anyway, I considered the possibility that maybe the dorms were built to be near the old schoolhouse, which is why they're not super close to the school, but that wouldn't make sense given this map from ch 58
If the dorms were close the the old schoolhouse, they wouldn't meet at the train station ON THE OTHER ISLAND to get to the mall. (And considering there's a train at all, I don't think you could get from island 2 to the school within 7 minutes)
Which then begs the question, why are the dorms on island 1 if the schoolhouse is on island 2? (<- person who cares too much about details nobody gives a shit about)
ok enough about the dorms now
