Finally got to attend a game at Dodger Stadium. Chose a good one in that Clayton Kershaw broke the Dodgers franchise record for strike outs and another future Hall of Famer, Miguel Cabrera, was in the lineup for the Detroit Tigers. Then there was the painful sight of Freddie Freeman playing 1B for the a Dodgers (I'm a lifetime Braves fan); still love that guy though. Aurora Vargas and her family being evicted from their home in 1959.   The Federal Housing Act of 1949 granted money to cities to build public housing projects. 10,000 new units were approved to be built in Chavez Ravine, Los Angeles. In 1950, all residents in Chavez Ravine received letters from the government telling them they would have to sell their homes to make way for the redevelopment in the area to build public housing. The residents were given the first choice for these new homes. While some resisted, others sold their properties for little to no compensation. Using eminent domain, the government bought up the land and began leveling buildings. During this time, the McCarthy red scare made this planned public housing project a prime target, declaring it an “unamerican activity”. Norris Poulson who was running for mayor at the time, made the public housing a central issue in his platform. When he won the election and got into office, he found a way to get out of the city’s obligation to build the housing project and instead, struck a deal to bring the Brooklyn Dodgers to LA with the promise of a new stadium in Chavez Valley. After much negotiations, Poulson was also able to buy the land back from the federal government with the stipulation that it be used for a public purpose.
