265: Elyse Weinberg // Elyse
Tumblr media
Elyse Elyse Weinberg 1968, Tetragrammaton (Bandcamp)
It surprises me a bit that Elyse, the sole LP released by Elyse Weinberg before her music was rediscovered in the ‘00s, isn’t more widely feted as a minor psych folk classic. It seems appropriate that it was a member of Elephant-6 cornerstone Elf Power that tracked her down, because her sound has nearly the exact mixture of bric-a-brac whimsy, ragged naïveté, and raw clomping noisiness that would be the Athens collective’s signature. Backed by early American prog band Touch, Weinberg flits between faux-European folk ballads and shambling West Coast hippie music a la Melanie. It would be the ideal soundtrack to a short animated film in a Ralph Bakshi style about the dreams of a medieval peasant woman who inadvertently foraged a load of magic mushrooms. The arrangements throw violin, spoons, tabla, sitar, barrelhouse piano, and harpsicord into the mix, but as grandiose as tracks like “Meet Me at the Station” can get, it’s Weinberg’s raspy yowl that holds centre stage. She’s an excitable vocalist, and she can occasionally verge on tea kettle shrieking, but for the most part she is captivating: her rendition of Burt Jansch’s “Deed I Do” quavers with stoned need, while “Here in My Heart (Underneath the Spreading Chestnut Tree)” and “Last Ditch Protocol” have an unmistakably original weirdness.
youtube
Born in Chatham, Ontario, home of Fergie Jenkins and TekSavvy Internet, Weinberg was no poor unfortunate hard done by the music biz. She was a fellow traveler of Canada’s folk elite in the ‘60s (Mitchell, Lightfoot, Ian & Sylvia etc.), apparently made an appearance on The Tonight Show, and her pal Neil Young played on a few tracks from her abortive second record Greasepaint Smile.* In any case, the first record didn’t sell, the label went bankrupt before the second could come out, and her manager dumped her before she could finish recording a third. I guess after that she took the hint. That’s a shame, because between Elyse and its Stonesier follow up there are at least a handful of tracks I like as much as anything to emerge from the first wave of folk rock.
* I’ve seen it asserted that Young plays on Elyse, but I doubt it; it doesn’t sound like him at all. I think the confusion stems from the 2001 Orange Twin reissue, which appends “Houses,” a song from the then-unreleased Greasepaint Smile featuring Young, as a bonus track. “Houses” quickly became Weinberg’s best-known song and it is a masterpiece in my estimation—so fair warning to anyone familiar with the digital version who buys an original pressing of Elyse, as it will not include that track!

A Chatham, Ont. mother is spearheading a class action lawsuit alleging a company that collected $14 million in investments from members of her community was actually a Ponzi scheme that fed nearly a third of its funds to Ontario’s self-described ‘crypto king’ Aiden Pleterski.
“It’s definitely been overwhelming,” Emily Hime, the 31-year-old mother, told CTV News Toronto in an interview earlier this month. “The financial stress of it all, it’s impacted my family life quite significantly.”
The class action, filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in May, is representing 125 people who invested with Banknote Capital Inc. after a whistleblower from the company filed a complaint to the Ontario Securities Commission in early 2023 alleging the owner pocketed investments. The lawsuit is ultimately aiming to trace and preserve assets with the goal of redistributing money to investors.

The eyes have it. by Ric McArthur Via Flickr: Grey tree frog. We had a 60 foot snag come down during a wind storm the other day. Really concerned as it was the tree the red-headed woodpeckers and flickers use for nesting. The birds are still here so they weren't in the tree or got out before it came down. While we were inspecting the nest holes this grey tree frog popped out and jumped onto a stalk of grass. Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Aug 30, 2022.

"A veteran Chatham-Kent Public Health nurse has been fired, and believes it was because she spoke out against the southwestern Ontario health unit's connection to an anti-abortion service provider.
Carolyn Martin was terminated last month, roughly a week after speaking with CBC News about CK Public Health listing Refuge as a resource for women and families. The private organization, founded by Right to Life Kent, is run by a director with "pro-life" views, facts that aren't always clear to pregnant teenagers and adults before entering.
Martin, a CK Public Health nurse for 20 years, disagreed with the health unit's affiliation with Refuge, saying she felt compelled to speak out after trying to effect change internally for years.
Officially, the 54-year-old lost her job because she didn't provide a sick note, according to emails from a human resources officer. But Martin believes her termination is linked to her going public about her opposition to some CK Public Health policies."

Photographs taken by Yon Shimizu, a Japanese-Canadian who was exiled from the west coast of Canada to Ontario during the second World War, along with hundreds of other Japanese-Canadian men. In 1942, he worked along with several dozen other men as a farm labourer with the Ontario Farm Service Force near Glencoe, equidistant from Sarnia, London and Chatham.  These are photographs he took of the sugarbeet harvest, and were digitized from a DVD of Yon Shimizu’s scrapbook by the Southwestern Ontario Digital Archive. All dated 1942 though they definitely show a range of time during that summer and fall - final harvesting of sugarbeets is in late October or November, and the last photo shows the men huddling from the cold in November.

2) Blocking 48 Gang, that is, thinning or "blocking" the sugar beets; left to right: S. Miyashita, Y. Madokoro, S. Kawahara, J. Henmi.
3) “He-Men.” Left to right: B. Hoita, K. Goto, T. Hoita.
4) “Siesta Time!” T. Okamoto taking a siesta during the beet harvest.
5) “Block Busters!” Showing off some huge sugarbeets during the thinning (blocking) process.
6) Gang 5 "Toppers A-1" Butch Hoita and Stum Shimizu.
7) Gang 5 "Toppers A-1" Tommy Hoita and Tomo Okamoto.
8) Gang 5 "Toppers A-1" Stum Okamoto and Esao Ono.
9) Gang 5 "Toppers A-1" Tom Kuwabara and Yon Shimizu. Toppers defoliate the beets as close to harvesting as possible.
10) Lunch, Cold November Day
