I wish I could have finished this list for Hispanic Heritage Month, but at least I could still get it done for October.

Sadly, this year marks the passing of beloved Brazilian horror icon José Mojica Marins (aka Zé do Caixão, or "Coffin Joe").

So, I hereby dedicate this list to his memory.

American Horror Story: Coven

American Horror Story: Coven é a terceira temporada da série de televisão American Horror Story, da FX. Estreou em 9 de outubro de 2013, nos Estados Unidos, e terminou em 29 de janeiro de 2014. Coven segue a trama histórica e lúdica de bruxas que buscam sobreviver e resistir a extinção da espécie que ao passar dos anos tende a diminuir. A temporada se passa em Nova Orleans, Luisiana, nos Estados Unidos, também trazendo ao enredo o tema da escravidão nos Estados Unidos.

Mais de 300 anos se passaram desde os tempos turbulentos dos julgamentos das bruxas de Salem, e aqueles que conseguiram escapar agora enfrentam a extinção. Têm sido feitos misteriosos ataques contra a sua espécie e as garotas estão sendo enviadas para a Acadêmia para Excepcionais Jovens Garotas da Madame Robichaux, uma instituição localizada em Nova Orleans que acolhe jovens bruxas na tentativa de ajudá-las a controlar seus poderes e desenvolver suas aptidões.

A trama se inicia com Zoe Benson, uma jovem até então comum que descobre de maneira chocante ser uma bruxa quando seu namorado morre em pleno ato sexual. Ela é levada por Myrtle Snow à academia em Nova Orleans. Nesta nova casa, Zoe conhece outras três bruxas: Madison Montgomery, uma atriz que foi mandada para controlar seus poderes autodestrutivos, Queenie, uma ex-atendente de fast food e Nan, uma jovem que busca ser comum mas é tratada como diferente pelas outras pessoas. Esta academia é dirigida por Cordelia Foxx.

Ao mesmo tempo, a trama resgata duas personagens históricas do passado escravocrata de Nova Orleans: Marie Laveau, uma conhecida praticante de vodu dos Estados Unidos apelidada de Rainha do Vodu e Delphine LaLaurie, uma socialite de Nova Orleans famosa por torturar, mutilar e matar dezenas de escravos em seu porão.

Como punição por ter transformado seu namorado em um minotauro, Marie mata a família de LaLaurie e a concede vida eterna para que sofra para sempre dentro de um caixão enterrado em seu quintal. Porém, anos depois, Fiona Goode, mãe de Cordelia, retorna para Nova Orleans para proteger sua Supremacia. Ela liberta LaLaurie para descobrir o segredo da vida eterna, rompendo a trégua entre bruxas e praticantes de vodu. Enquanto os dois lados duelam para provar sua superioridade, os membros do Delphi Trust — uma organização secreta de caçadores — planejam acabar com todas as bruxas dos Estados Unidos.

Curiosidades:

Nessa temporada rolou uma cena de sexo entre Spalding e Madison, mas resolveram cortar. Na cena, a personagem confrontava Spalding e questionava a razão de porque ele a manteve como boneca. A “discussão” terminou com os dois dormindo juntos no quarto do mordomo, cheio de bonecas medonhas. A cena foi cortada do sétimo episódio de Coven.

Lalaurie e Marie Laveau foram contemporâneas, embora não haja relatos de rivalidade entre as duas. O fato é que a personagem de Angela Bassett também é baseada em uma pessoa existente. Laveau foi uma famosa praticante da religião vodu de Nova Orleans. Não há grande documentação sobre suas atividades ligadas ao ocultismo, paralelas ao trabalho como cabeleireira. Apesar disso, as histórias folclóricas sobre Marie Laveau são tão fortes que pessoas afirmaram tê-la visto após sua morte em 1981. Essas supostas aparições sobrenaturais lhe garantem uma menção na nossa lista.

Algumas personagens realmente existiram,e fazem parte da história,como a Madame Lalaurie que foi considerada uma assassina em série por matar e torturar mais de 100 escravos, e Marie Laveau, que ficou conhecida nos Estados Unidos como a "rainha vodu".

A lindíssima Emma Roberts é sobrinha da outra lindíssima atriz Julia Roberts.Emma também é namorada do Evan Peters na vida real.

A trama tem 13 episódios.

Opinião:

Amante de histórias de bruxas e ainda mais quando envolve coisas mais sombrias como na serie. Emma Roberts no elenco me deixa bem feliz porque adoro os trabalhos dela. E o retorno da Taissa Farmiga também me deixou feliz porque acho que atuação dela como a adolecente problematica me deixou feliz em AHS Muder House. Alem de outros icones que tambem marcaram nas outras temporadas como Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy e Sarah Paulson e com esse elenco maravilhoso a iconica Jessica Lange.

Claro que senti falta do Zachary Quinto nessa serie porque acho que ele é lindo e que deveria participar mais porem depois das duas primeiras temporadas ele não voltou para nossos corações nessa serie tão maravilhosa. Alem disso a fotografia da serie sempre foi impecável e sempre com um ar sombrio bem delicioso de assistir. Afinal vamos la uma boa história de bruxa não pode ser tão floridas e fofas, mas tem que ser bem macabra e bem sombria.

Fora os outros aspectos com a questão da escravidão, o preconceito, o Vudoo e Pactos de Alma. A Serie é fantástica, não há quem não diga que é uma das melhores temporadas de de AHS. Eu não consegui para de assistir, claro que estou revendo todos as temporadas para dar uma opinião boa. E não falar coisas que li na internet.

DVD Review: At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul / This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse

Coffin Joe (or Zé do Caixão, as he's known in Portuguese) may be unfamiliar to many American viewers, but he's a bona fide horror icon in Brazil. The alter ego of filmmaker José Mojica Marins, Coffin Joe was the subject of Brazil's first horror movie, 1964's At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul. The film was a big hit in its native country, leading Marins to resurrect the character for a sequel in 1967, This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse. He reprised the role in other films over the years, in addition to appearances in television, music, and comics, before completing the trilogy in 2008 with Embodiment of Evil.

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul introduces Coffin Joe as an arrogant creep, clad in all black, including a top hat and cape, and sporting long, talon-like fingernails. A staunch atheist, Joe enjoys ruffling feathers in the local religious village by eating meat on Good Friday and spouting his blasphemous rhetoric. While his job as an undertaker finds him dealing with dead bodies regularly, his extracurricular activities come to include cold-blooded murder. Openly mocking religion, Joe's sole belief is in continuing his bloodline.

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul was clearly produced on a very low budget by an inexperienced cast and crew, but those obstacles only forced Marins and company to get more creative. There’s no better example than when glitter is physically glued on the camera negative to create a clunky "special effect" for a ghost. Although at times rather campy, the film also exudes a classically spooky atmosphere. The plot is streamlined, moving quickly and wrapping up in 82 minutes. It's surprisingly gory, not to mention sacrilegious, for the time.

This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse picks up right where the previous film left off. Coffin Joe - now sporting a more pronounced unibrow and even longer fingernails - continues on his quest to father a son and create a superior race, spilling plenty of blood along the way. He may have found the perfect womb to bear his child, but he's faced with an angry mob of townspeople, not to mention his own guilt, rallying against him. Although devious in the first installment, the follow-up portrays Joe as an even darker character.

It's apparent from the significant increase in production value and scope that Marins was working with a bigger budget and possessed a stronger grasp on filmmaking when he helmed his sophomore effort. While its predecessor was succinct, the sequel feels less focused at 109 minutes, veering deeper into surrealism. It's in black and white, with the exception of a lengthy nightmare scene that takes place in hell. Its garish colors resemble a black light poster, making it bizarrely fascinating. Despite being a bit overlong, it may be the most memorable sequence in Marins's oeuvre.

Both films have been remastered from the original 35mm negatives for DVD by Synapse Films. (Due to a lack of high-definition materials, they are not available on Blu-ray.) They're available individually or in a Coffin Joe Trilogy set with Embodiment of Evil, which was previously released by Synapse. The picture is clear, but occasional dirt, scratches, and other imperfections are present. Each disc contains special features, including cheesy, horror host-style introductions by Marins, interviews and making-of segments featuring Marins, trailers, and more.

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse are a rare original-sequel pair that are on par with one another. Both are equally imaginative and enjoyable, rife with macabre imagery that lives up the films' striking titles. It's no wonder that they launched Marins' career as both a filmmaker and an actor, in spite of his tendency for rudimentary direction and overacting. If you're unfamiliar with the legend of Coffin Joe, this is the place to start.
