I told myself I was going to write about my REU often and look how that worked out lmfaooo
It's almost been 2 weeks since I got to UAH, here's a quick list of things that have happened to recap, and then I promise I'll update regularly LOLOL
I got really cool pictures on the plane ride down here
All 3 of my suitemates are trans/enby like myself, and we all get along phenomenally!! I couldn't have asked for better roomies
We had a lotttt of lectures last week on all sorts of topics. I found the one on gravitational astronomy particularly interesting (LIGO just started its 4th observation run, that's super super exciting!)
I got the details of my project!
My title is Active Region Simulation with EBTEL. In a nutshell, I'll be using Enthalpy-Based Thermal Evolution of Loops (EBTEL) simulations to observe differences in heat/density fluctuations in coronal loops with the introduction of nanoflares, which are small scale energy releases. This will be useful in trying to better understand the coronal heating problem - why the heck does the temperature go from a few thousand K at the photosphere to suddenly orders of magnitude higher??? SUPER excited about this project! All three of my mentors are either associated with or work at NASA, so my work amongst the others will directly help them in their projects which is super cool.
My suitemates and I visited the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, and I got lots of artsy photos! (pictures above from here: the piano, the ladybug in the flower, and the walkway over water)
We found a good boba place nearby (SCORE!!) called Leafly!
Tumblr media
good soup.
I found two seeds that had little roots forming inside an apple I ate, so we germinated them and stuck em in some soil. They stood up within a day!
A lot more happened, but this is a pretty decent list of notable things!
I'm super stoked to be here, and I cannot wait to get started on my project!!

The brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has announced that three researchers associated with the UAH Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research (CSPAR) have discovered a gamma-ray burst (GRB) approximately 2.4 billion light-years away in the constellation Sagitta that ranks as the brightest ever observed. Believed to have been triggered by collapse of a massive star, it is accompanied by a supernova explosion, giving birth to a black hole.
Dr. Peter Veres, an assistant professor with CSPAR, Dr. Michael S. Briggs, CSPAR principal research scientist and assistant director, and Stephen Lesage, a UAH graduate research assistant, collaborated on the discovery and analysis of the gamma-ray burst. The researchers operate the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) at UAH, a part of the University of Alabama System.
The GBM is an instrument in low-Earth orbit aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope that can see the entire gamma-ray sky not blocked by the Earth and hunts for GRBs as part of its main program.
The development of the GBM and analysis of its data is a collaborative effort between the National Space Science and Technology Center in the U.S. and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany. The instrument is managed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL.
"This gamma-ray burst was extremely bright. We expect to see one like this only every 10,000 years or so," says Dr. Veres. "We routinely detect GRBs at a rate of about five per week and keep an eye out if any of the GRBs are special in some way. This one was so bright, the instrument couldn't keep up with the large number of incoming photons. Most of the work, led by Stephen Lesage, was to figure out how to reconstruct the lost counts."
Gamma-ray bursts come from random directions of the sky, so the GBM must watch as much of the sky as possible at all times. The GBM consists of 12 detectors made of sodium iodide for catching X-rays and low-energy gamma rays and two detectors made of bismuth germanate for high-energy gamma rays.
When the gamma rays enter these detectors, they interact with crystals in the instrument. The more energetic the gamma ray, the more light is produced. By seeing which crystals light up, the GBM can tell the direction of the bursts. In all, the Fermi instrument has discovered over 3,500 GRBs, and 221009A is by far the brightest ever detected.
"During a GRB, we see the death of a massive star, approximately 30 times more massive than the sun, and the formation of a black hole," Dr. Veres explains.
"The black hole launches a very fast jet close to the speed of light, and the jet will produce the gamma-ray burst. At later times, GRBs are visible at other wavelengths as well, from radio, or optical through very high-energy gamma-rays, which is called the afterglow of the GRB. This GRB was so bright, the afterglow showed up in the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, which is very uncommon, and we could follow it for almost three hours."
GRB 221009A is also one of the nearest and possibly most energetic GRBs ever found, as detailed in a paper on the arXiv preprint server, which has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Black Eagles fly on Verdant Winds
My idea of what becomes of the Black Eagles in the Verdant Wind route during the timeskip where all of them were recruited to the Golden Deer.
note: in Verdant Wind Edelgard is framed as an antagonist, so that is how I am framing her here.
-
When Garreg Mach falls and the Professor disappears the Black Eagles... leave. They shuffle awkwardly off. They find their ways home.
Except Petra.
The others are natives of the Empire and might be forgiven for standing against her, but Petra was a vassal and a hostage, and she will be killed. So she vanishes, leaving Imperial soldiers riddled with arrows in her wake. Those “private lessons” with Claude seemed to have payed off.
The Eagles are in limbo, frightened and nervous. Two months ago they would not have feared what Edelgard would do. Two months ago they did not know that she was capable of this. Bernadetta hides in her room, Caspar and Linhardt walk on eggshells in their own homes, Dorothea returns to her Opera House.
And Ferdinand?
Ferdinand wanders an empty house. His father is arrested. His servants have been dismissed. His lands have been taken from him and his title and life could very well be next. He is numb. Everything he thought was valuable has been stripped from him. His allies in the nobility have abandoned him or been arrested themselves. His classmates send him tentative letters of encouragement, but little else.
Ferdinand thinks of the Professor. He thinks of Claude and his friends.
It is six months of this terrible waiting later that he is finally summoned to the Imperial Capital. Edelgard sits there, looking nearly as a Goddess herself even as she wages war on  another. She speaks to Ferdinand gently, almost as a friend. She offers him his lands, his wealth, his power back. She offers to restore him to what he once was.
All he has to do is kneel.
Ferdinand stands there in the Imperial Court. Alone, without allies. He thinks of Faerghus, already besieged and crumbling. He thinks of the Alliance, splintered and fractured. He thinks of Garreg Mach, burning in the dying sunlight. He thinks of how they whisper about Edelgard, saying that she is invincible, that she is a force of nature.
Ferdinand thinks of the Professor, and their gentle encouragement and stalwart strength.
He thinks of Claude, rakish grin and iron-clad optimism about the future.
He thinks of the Golden Deer. He thinks of how they accepted him and the other Eagles without question. How they never doubted their loyalty even as their own countrymen stormed the gates of Garreg Mach.
Ferdinand thinks of these thinks, looks Edelgard dead in the eye, and says no.
He denounces Edelgard. He denounces her ambitions and her methods. He calls her a monster and a disgrace to this August Hall. He spits at her feet at storms out of the Palace. He flees Enbarr like a thief in the night, alone and with only the clothes on his back and the spear in his hand.
He lives the life of a penniless vagabond, but he is not alone for long.
It is Petra who finds him first. Flanked by Brigid Hunters, all officially “traitors” to their home, but secretly all there with her grandfather’s blessing. She commends his courage and hugs her old friend. He learns to hunt and survive from them.
He learns to fight back.
Next are Caspar and Linhardt, together as they always are. The come with whole battalions of their Houses’ soldiers who have also turned coat against the Empire. Cspar praises his “guts of steel” for defying Edelgard in such a spectacular fashion. Linhardt merely hugs his friend and asks where the nearest napping spot is. Ferdinand is nearly in tears.
Then it’s Bernie. Sweet, nervous, wonderful Bernadetta, having crawled out of her window and fled to her friends. Ferdinand’s heart is bursting with pride for brave little Bernie and sweeps her into a hug, much to her chagrin.
The last is Dorothea.
Dorothea, who still distrusts him as she does all Nobles. Dorothea who still seems to hate him for reasons he cannot fathom. Dorothea is here. She is here because she believes he is right. He is spared from a long and awkward conversation by Bernadetta and Petra enthusiastically greeting her.
Soon more deserters flock to the Eagles. More and more, horrified by Edelgard’s actions and looking for a way to defy her. Others are the common folk, left beggared by the war and looking for a way to fight back Ferdinand finds himself at the head of a small army of rebels.
They live as bandits, cutting supply lines and stealing contraband, deviling Edelgard’s war effort. Their impact seems small, but it is enough to weaken her war machine.
Their names become a rallying cry for the Empire’s enemies. The Black Eagles. They are proof, proof that the legendary Flame Emperor can be defied. Proof that she can fail.
Caspar and Petra train their men to fight and survive. Linhardt and Dorothea keep them healthy and ease the passing of the dying. Bernadetta is a shadow in the camp, appearing every now and then with hand-knitted blankets and comfort items. And Ferdinand leads them with all the will he can muster.
And when the time to keep their promise comes around, they return to Garreg Mach with heads held high, and a smiling Golden Deer House and Professor there to greet them.

Joseph Petrillo: Legal disconnect with some CSPARS lawsuits - FederalNewsRadio.com
The Contractor Performance Assessment Reports System (CPARS) is one of the Defense Department’s most potent weapons for dealing with poor performing companies. But sometimes contracting officers make erroneous judgments and enter them into CPARS. Then what? Contractors can sue. But procurement attorney Joseph Petrillo of Petrillo and Powell tells Federal Drive with Tom Temin that even if they win the case, they don’t really win.
