Ways to Power Your CPAP Off-the-Grid
There are two different ways you can power your CPAP while camping off-the-grid:
Use a Deep-Cycle Lead-Acid Battery
Use a Portable CPAP Battery
1) Using a Deep Cycle Battery
Deep-cycle batteries are commonly found at auto parts stores as marine batteries, but can typically also be found where mobility scooters are sold. A deep-cycle battery is designed to provide continuous power over a long period of time whereas a cranking or starting battery (like you’d find in most personal vehicles) is designed to discharge a large amount of energy upfront, then be recharged by an alternator.
If weight isn’t off-putting to you, a deep-cycle battery is an efficient and cost-effective way to power your CPAP off-grid, especially if you’ll be RV camping with your CPAP.
To make it work, you’ll need to do one of two things:
Get a DC Adapter Cable and Connect Using Your Machine’s DC Cable
Use an Inverter
We’ll go over these points in greater detail below.
Using a DC Adapter Cable
A DC Adapter Cable uses alligator clips to connect to the positive and negative terminals of the deep-cycle battery. It then outputs the power to a cigarette lighter plug. From there, you can plug in your machine’s DC cable into the cigarette lighter plug and power your machine that way. Some deep-cycle batteries have the cigarette lighter plug built-in to the battery itself, allowing you to plug in without needing the adapter.
Using an Inverter
An inverter converts the DC power provided by the battery to AC power so your machine can use it. A few machine models require a special kind called a Pure Sine Wave Inverter. If you don’t use this inverter, you could risk damaging your machine. To make your inverter work with a car battery, you’ll need to make sure it has alligator clips that you can connect to the deep cycle battery. From there, it would convert it to AC power, and you’d plug it in as you would at home.
There are some drawbacks to using a car battery for your CPAP:
Car Batteries Can Be Heavy: If you’ve ever replaced your car battery for your vehicle, you’d know how heavy a car battery can be. Lugging one in a backpack over long distances can be rough. Lithium-ion batteries are a lot lighter and are much easier to take with you on a long camping trip.
Deep Cycle Batteries Are Not FAA Approved: Because deep-cycle lead-acid batteries contain toxic chemicals that can be unstable, they’re not permitted to be used on a flight or placed in checked baggage. This means you won’t be able to bring one with you while you travel by air to your destination. They also can be hard to recharge. For those that can overcome these limitations, a deep cycle battery can be a great source of power for any traveler, trekker, or camper.
2) Using a CPAP Battery Pack
Today, CPAP batteries are lighter and less expensive than they’ve ever been, and that’s a big reason why they’re becoming more popular. When it comes to batteries, one important thing to remember is that no battery is truly universal. Many batteries have DC inputs for specific machines, but if there’s no DC input, you’ll have to use an inverter.
CPAP Depot makes it easy to know what power needs your particular machine has. We include this information on our product pages under the tab labeled “power.” It’s far better to connect to a battery designed to work with your specific machine than it is to pick your favorite battery and find a way to make it work.

How to Buy Medical Supply Online
Tumblr media
When buying medical supplies, choosing the right supplier is important. It's best to avoid buying from a store that doesn't offer the quality you need. Also, offline stores usually don't carry everything you need. The internet allows you to compare prices and product offerings, which saves you both time and money.
Most J2 medical supply companies offer wholesale prices. Some only sell a particular type of medical equipment, while others carry a wider variety of products. Check with your insurance company to see if they cover medical supplies. Many will also reimburse you for the cost, but it depends on the policy. Some companies may require a prescription if you plan on using oxygen or CPAP machines. Others might only reimburse you if you have a Medicare or Medicaid card.
You can also save money by using cash-back services. Most cash-back services will give you anywhere from two to ten percent of your purchase. One of the best ones is Ebates. They offer a $10 bonus when you make your first purchase with them. If you want to save even more money, you can sign up for AutoReorder, which automatically reorders the supplies you need.
Another good option is Medical Supply Depot. This website will allow you to track your shipments. You can also choose a personal shopper service to help you buy items from a medical supply store. Using a package forwarding service will allow you to get real-time quotes on shipping costs. You can track your order using the MyUS site and get updates on its status.
The next step is to find a Medical supply company that offers a guarantee. The internet is a great place to find medical supplies, but you should make sure you do your research. Start by typing in your search terms. You'll be surprised by the number of results. You may even find some stores that offer free shipping and low minimum order.
In addition to online purchasing, you can also look for local stores that specialize in a specific category. For example, EMS companies need a variety of products to ensure that they can respond to emergencies quickly. EMS supplies should include quality first aid products. EMS also needs to be reliable and fast. There's a wide range of medical supply companies that offer products for this need. You should be able to find the right one for your needs.
If you're on Medicare, several options can help you get the products you need. Some DME suppliers are even willing to accept international prescriptions. Regardless of which option you choose, it is important to choose a company that is part of Medicare's program. This way, you won't have to deal with insurance companies or submit complicated paperwork. Check out this post for more details related to this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_device.

Electric Blues
Monday, October 25, 2021
Our minor electrical problems got worse today. In the recent past, whenever there was a thunderstorm, Tim would reach in the circuit breaker access panel and push the GFCI button (the same one as the outlet in your bathroom) and everything would be fixed. Today, that didn’t happen.
We talked to Storyteller who advised us to replace the GFCI outlet on the outside. Sure enough, when Tim opened up the outlet compartment, it showed evidence of water damage. We bought a new outlet at a Home Depot and Tim installed it in the parking lot.
No joy. The outlet has power, but it doesn’t work. The other outlets still don’t work. Annoying, but we can deal. We head east through St Louis, then into Illinois and then Indiana.
Tumblr media
We camped at Buzzards Roost on the Ohio River at dusk. We go for a walk on the trail along the river.
Tumblr media
We had some collaboration computer work we wanted to do before dinner. Jeanne goes to plug in her computer to the 12 volt system using the small inverter that runs the CPAP machines. Now that is not working. Grrr.
Roughing it.

Jailbreak for CPAP machine reveals hidden ventilator functionality
Tumblr media
Right to Repair has never been more urgent. There's a reason farmers have been on the front lines of R2R: they have pressing deadlines ("make hay while the sun shines") and are located far from service depots and transport hubs.
That's why farms have workshops and even forges. They have to rely on their own ingenuity to fix their stuff, or they have to do without, often at critical junctures.
During pandemic, hospitals taken on the characteristics of farmers: isolated from service with urgent needs. And so do we all, to a greater or lesser extent, as our stuff breaks down and no one is around to fix it.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/03/20/pluralistic-20-mar-2020/#r2r
There are three major reasons companies like Apple, John Deere and Medtronic have fought so hard against R2R, killing 20 bills at the state level:
1. It lets them charge you extra for repairs and parts.
2. It lets them decide when a device needs to be retired so they can sell you a new one (Tim Cook called longer Iphone usage cycles the biggest threat to Apple profits).
3. It lets them charge you extra for features already in the device. For example, Thermomix's new blender/cooker has a high-temp mode that you have to pay a subscription fee to unlock. Independent repair could subvert this, committing "Contempt of Business Model."
This is rampant in med-tech. Think of sleep apnea CPAP devices: they had proprietary data-formats that allow manufacturers to charge doctors to monitor their use.
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/xwjd4w/im-possibly-alive-because-it-exists-why-sleep-apnea-patients-rely-on-a-cpap-machine-hacker
They're also riddled with spyware that lets insurers gouge you on consumables and deny benefits to people who need them:
https://www.propublica.org/article/you-snooze-you-lose-insurers-make-the-old-adage-literally-true
Enter Resmed's Airsense 10, a CPAP machine that the company claims cannot be retrofitted to perform ventilator functions, because it can only push air, not pull it out again:
https://www.resmed.com/en-us/sleep-apnea/cpap-parts-support/sleep-apnea-full-products-list/cpap-machines/airsense-10/
Security researcher Trammell Hudson analyzed the Airsense 10 and found a mode in its firmware that allows it to pump air both in and out of the user's lungs. He's released Airbreak, a jailbreaking patch for the Airsense to turn it into a limited ventilator replacement.
https://airbreak.dev/
This is presently only for research purposes. As Hudson writes, "in its current form [this patch] should be considered a proof of concept and is not intended for use in a life-support capacity."
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/04/firmware-jailbreak-lets-low-cost-medical-devices-act-like-ventilators/
Significantly, the jailbreak brings "the AirSense S10 to near feature parity with BiPAP machines from the same manufacturer, boost the maximum pressure output available, and provide a starting point to add more advanced emergency ventilator functionality."
Hudson and colleagues are calling on Resmed to release an official, supported patch that enables the latent functionality in their widely available, low-cost CPAP machine.

Electrical Generators and Home Security: What to Know
Make sure your home security system stays armed with a backup generator
Anyone living in a winter-weather state can tell you that when the power goes out having a backup generator can bring a huge sense of relief. A generator for home use keeps your appliances, heat and lights on when you’re without power. And if you have a home security system, generators also help with safety by keeping the system engaged no matter what.
People tend to shop for generators at Home Depot and other stores right before or after a storm when generators are in the highest demand. Products like Generac home generators help to keep your home safe and secure by making sure your home security system stays armed during a power outage, but there are several different types of generators to choose from. In this article, we look at the different generators out there and how to choose the right one for your space.
What is a backup electrical generator and how does it work?
A generator is a machine that produces power when an outage occurs. A backup generator kicks in when the power is out, either automatically or with a switch, usually restoring electricity to your home within a few seconds. How it does this depends on the type of generator.
Types of power generators
To determine the right generator for your home you need to understand the different types available. Generators vary by size, fuel used and how they operate. While the most common is a portable generator, a standby generator is best for when you want to keep your security system armed. Here are the different types of generators:
Portable generator: These generators provide a temporary solution when the power goes out. Some use gas while others use diesel to provide electrical power. If you’re running the basics, like your refrigerator, freezer and television, this is an excellent choice. However, because of their fuel, these machines also have a high emission rate. Prices range between $140 for an 800-watt generator to $5,000 for a 10,500-watt generator.
Standby generator: A standby generator, also called a backup generator, doesn’t require a manual start. That means when the power goes out you don’t have to do anything because your electricity will restore automatically. Standby generators have a larger fuel tank compared to a gasoline-powered portable generator, so you can run them for longer. On the downside, the larger fuel tank makes these machines bulkier and more challenging to move. Prices range between $500 for a 7,000-watt standby generator and $13,000 for a 22,000-watt standby generator.
Inverter generator: An inverter generator offers the same benefits as a portable generator, but they’re more efficient, lighter and quieter. As this generator runs, its engine speed varies according to electrical demand meaning that it produces less noise and uses less fuel than a standard standby generator. Prices range from $29 for a 200-watt inverter generator to $4,000 for a 7,000-watt inverter generator. Inverter generators are cheaper than standby generators because a standby generator turns on automatically and runs for several days without the need to refuel.
Portable power station: Instead of using fossil fuels to deliver power, a portable power station uses a rechargeable battery. They’re excellent for charging anything with a USB port. Because there are AC outlets, you can use them to power things like small appliances, small coolers and CPAP machines. Prices range from $38 for a 20-watt portable power generator to $12,000 for a 48,000-watt portable power station.
How to keep your security system armed in a power outage using a generator
When your power goes out that means there’s no electricity to run your security system. If you’re away from home, that’s problematic. Installing a standby generator restores power automatically. And while it may be tempting to pick up the most affordable generator, the goal should really be picking the generator that will do the best job keeping your security system armed.
For example, a standby generator with 20,000 watts or more should power everything you have under your roof, including your security system. If you would prefer to use a smaller portable or inverter generator, you’ll need at least 7,500 watts to keep your home security system, lights, refrigerator and chargers going. Your home security system alone will need at least 100-watts to maintain its ability to keep your home secure when you’re away.
A recreational inverter or midsize inverter that’s up to 2,000 watts will keep your refrigerator, lights, chargers and home security system activated. If your power is going to be out for an extended period, you can get away with using one of these machines for keeping the bare necessities running.
How to use a power generator safely
Whether you’re using Generac home generators or Home Depot generators, they all come with safety guidelines you must consider. Generators have safety features to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, injuries, fires and electrocution.
Electrical generator safety tips
Use it safely: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid electrocution, fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure you’re using home generators correctly to avoid disaster.
Keep generators outside: Position generators away from structures on the outside of your home.
Keep generators dry: Otherwise, they aren’t safe to operate.
Disconnect your electricity: Before operating a portable generator, disconnect power going into your home to prevent power surging or back-feeding.
Ground the generator: Prevent electrocution and shocks by grounding your generator.
Don’t use wall outlets: Never plug your generator into your home’s wall outlets or electrical panel. That could cause a fire, shock or electrocution. Instead, hire a professional electrician to hard-wire the unit.
Let it cool: Before refueling, turn off your generator and let it cool down.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a generator work?  Generators don’t create electricity. Instead, they convert chemical or mechanical energy into electricity. Generators for home use force electrons created by motion and force them through a circuit.
What is the best generator?  The best Home Depot generators include Generac home generators, as well as generators from Briggs & Stratton, Champion and Durostar.
Is it safe to use a generator indoors?  No. Using a generator inside your home can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

What Causes Snoring and What can you do about it?
Snoring is a common issue that can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. It can have a significant impact on the quality of sleep and overall health.  It is often seen as an annoyance to others, but it can also be a sign of underlying health issues.
The main question remains what causes snoring and what can you do about it? Fortunately, there are many ways to treat snoring and improve your sleep quality. In this article, we will discuss the five main factors that contribute to snoring, and some tips and remedies to help you get a good night's rest.
What Causes Snoring?
Obstructed Airways
One of the most common causes of snoring is obstructed airways. This can occur due to various factors such as allergies, sinus problems, or a deviated septum. When the airways are obstructed, the air passing through them creates a vibrating sound, resulting in snoring.
Weak Throat Muscles
Another common cause of snoring is weak throat muscles. When the muscles in the throat are not strong enough, they can collapse and obstruct the airway, leading to snoring. This is often the case for people who are overweight or have a sedentary lifestyle.
Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position can also contribute to snoring. Sleeping on your back can cause the tongue and soft palate to collapse to the back of the throat, obstructing the airway and leading to snoring. Sleeping on your side can help prevent snoring.
Alcohol and Medications
Alcohol and certain medications can also cause snoring. Alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat, making it more likely for them to collapse and obstruct the airway. Some medications, such as muscle relaxants and sedatives, can have a similar effect.
Age and Gender
Finally, age and gender can also play a role in snoring. As people age, their muscles become weaker, which can lead to snoring. Men are also more likely to snore than women due to differences in anatomy.
What can you do to prevent Snoring?
Medical Treatments
If lifestyle changes don't help, there are several medical treatments that can be effective. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment that uses a machine to deliver air pressure to keep the airway open. There are also dental devices that can be worn at night to help reposition the jaw and tongue, as well as surgery for severe cases.
Lifestyle Changes
One of the easiest ways to treat snoring is to make some simple lifestyle changes. Losing weight, reducing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, and establishing a regular sleep routine can all help reduce snoring. Additionally, sleeping on your side instead of your back can also make a difference.
Natural Remedies
For those who prefer natural remedies, there are several options that can help reduce snoring. These include nasal strips that help open up the nasal passages, essential oils that can help relax the throat muscles, and herbal teas that can reduce inflammation in the airway.
While snoring is annoying, it should not be ignored and passed as a normal occurrence in certain people. Talk to a healthcare professional to understand the root cause of your snoring which will assist to take the necessary steps in addressing the problem and improving your sleep quality. While at it, ensure to make some changes in your lifestyle and routine and every step necessary in reducing snoring for better sleep quality. You can also Buy CPAP Machines from CPAP Depot.

My adventures with Depot Lupron/Temp Chemical Menopause
Twas a 3 month shot. Will be out of my system in a week, tho for the past several I’ve felt it fading.
1st month I was still tired just with extra-super-sweaty hot flashes (had severe heat intolerance prior since puberty) and I had a lot of anxiety rushes come back (been handled with Paxil prior)
2nd month, aside from the more intense hot flashes an unrelated case of pnuemonia at the end of march
I FELT WONDERFUL! Waking up early, energy all throughout the day. I was able to chase a hyper 3 month old pupper around the backyard and combined with the hot-flash created sweating, I lost 10 freaking pounds! (and this weight was after 2 weeks of nothing but greasy fast food!)
3rd month, it wasnt to last. half way through this final month it was beginning to exit my body and my fatigue slowly crept back and now...back to being sleepy al the time....
My OBGYN is amazed, she was sure I was gonna feel like utter crap on the shot, but it instead improved my life quality so fucking much.
She (and my sister) want me on 1 more 3-month shot before I make a final decision to get my entire reproductive system removed.
But I have a feeling it is the answer
I just felt so fucking grand holy fuck
Trying to get my hormones at a proper level via HRT didn’t work, anti depressants didnt work (tho, it did HEAVILY manage my depression and anxiety, just not my fatigue)
But suppressing my ovaries into a temporary menopause did.
Like I just need them gone, get on an allergy prevention regimen, and get a cpap and I’ll be ready to get a job and be a functional human being
