TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Pages 1335 and 1336: Jonah 3:5 The people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast, and great and small alike put on sackcloth. Jonah 3:6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took of his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Jonah 3:7 And he had the word cried though Nineveh: By decree of the king and his nobles: No man or beast--of flock or herd--shall taste anything! They shall no graze, and they shall not drink water! Jonah 3:8 They shall be covered with sackcloth--man and beast--and shall cry mightily to God. Let everyone turn back from his evil ways and from the injustice of which he is guilty. Jonah 3:9 Who knows but that God my turn and relent? He may turn back from His wrath, so that we do not perish." Jonah 3:10 God saw what they did, how they were turning back from their evil ways. And God renounced the punishment He had planned to bring upon themn, and did not carry it out.

Deuteronomy 10:5 Then I left and went down from the mountain, and I deposited the tablets in the ark that I had made, where they stil are, as the Lord had commanded me.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Page 1033: Jeremiah 10:5 They are like a scarecrow in a cucumber patch, They cannot speak. They have to be carried, For they cannot walk. Be not afraid of them, for they can do no harm; Nor is it in them to do any good.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Page 1780: Ecclesiastes 10:5 Here is an evil I have seen under the sun as great as an error committed by a ruler:
John 10:1 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. John 10:2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. John 10:3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. John 10:4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. John 10:5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Pages 610 and 611: 1 Samuel 17:31 The things David said were overheard and were reported to Saul, who had him brought over. 1 Samuel 17:32 David said to Saul, "Let no man's courage fail him. Your servant will go and fight that Philistine!" 1 Samuel 17:33 But Saul said to David, "You cannot go to that Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth!" 1 Samuel 17:34 David replied to Saul, "Your servant has been tending his father's sheep, and if a lion or a bear came and carried off an animal from the flock, 1 Samuel 17:35 I would go after it and fight it and rescue it from its mouth. And if it attacked me, I would seize it by the beard and strike it down and kill it. 1 Samuel 17:36 Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and that uncircumcised Philistine shall end up like one of them, for he has defied the ranks of the living God. 1 Samuel 17:37 The Lord," David went on, "who saved me from lion and bear will also save me from that Philistine." "Then go," Saul said to David, "and may the Lord be with you!" 1 Samuel 17:38 Saul clothed David in his own garment; he placed a bronze helmet on his head and fastened a breastplate on him. 1 Samuel 17:39 David girded his sword over his garment. Then he tried to walk; but he was not used to it. And David said to Saul, "I cannot walk in these, for I am not used to them." So David took them off. 1 Samuel 17:40 He took his stick, picked a few smooth stones from the wadi, put them in the pocket of his shepherd's bag and, sling in hand, he went toward the Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:41 The Philistine, meanwhile, was coming closer to David, preceded by his shield-bearer. 1 Samuel 17:42 When the Philistine caught sight of David, he scorned him, for he was but a boy, ruddy and handsome. 1 Samuel 17:43 And the Philistine called out to David, "Am I a dog that you come against me with sticks?" The Philistine cursed David by his gods; 1 Samuel 17:44 and the Philistine said to David, "Come here, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field." 1 Samuel 17:45 David replied to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come against you in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:46 This very day the Lord will deliver you into my hands. I will kill you and cut off your head; and I will give the carcasses of the Philistine camp to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth. All the earth shall know that there is a God in Israel. 1 Samuel 17:47 And this whole assembly shall know that the Lord can give victory without sword or spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and He will deliver you into our hands." 1 Samuel 17:48 When the Philistine began to advance toward him again, David quickly ran up to the battle line to face the Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:49 David put his hand into the bag; he took out a stone and slung it. It struck the Philistine in the forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground.

King Pastoria is a fictional character mentioned in the Oz books by American author L. Frank Baum. He was the rightful ruler and King of the undiscovered Land of Oz, but was mysteriously removed from his position when the Wizard of Oz unexpectedly came to the country and took the throne, proclaiming himself as the new dominant ruler of Oz. Shortly after, Pastoria's only child and heir, Princess Ozma, suddenly vanished, leaving not a single clue of her whereabouts. Eventually in the second Oz book The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) (where Pastoria's past is first mentioned in detail), Glinda the Good finally finds Ozma, who was transformed by the evil witch Mombi into a boy, preventing anyone from recognizing her and thus allowing Mombi to ascend to the throne. Glinda forces Mombi to undo this curse and Ozma was established back in her place as the official child Queen of Oz. (Wikipedia)
John 1:2 He was with God in the beginning.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Page 738: 1 Kings 11:1 King Solomon loved many foreign women in addition to Pharaoh's daughter--Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Phoenician, and Hittite women, 1 Kings 11:2 from the nations of which the Lord had said to the Israelites, "None of you shall join them and none of them shall join you, lest they turn your heart away to follow their gods." Such Solomon clung to and loved. 1 Kings 11:3 He had seven hundred royal wives and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned his heart away. 1 Kings 11:4 In his old age, his wives turned away Solomon's heart after other gods, and he was not as wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God as his father David had been. 1 Kings 11:5 Solomon followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Phoenicians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 1 Kings 11:6 Solomon did what was displeasing to the Lord and did not remain loyal to the Lord like his father David.

Isaiah 6:10 Dull that people's mind, Stop its ears, And seal its eyes--Lest, seeing with its eyes And hearing with its ears, It also grasp with its mind, And repent and save itself."
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Page 1614: Proverbs 9:8 Do not rebuke a scoffer, for he will hate you; Reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Proverbs 9:9 Instruct a wise man, and he will grow wiser; Teach a righteous man, and he will gain in learning. Proverbs 9:10 The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord, And knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
For Christian and Hebrew comparison: Notice the repeated uncapitalized references after "The Lord" and pair that with the antisemitic, genocidal, ethnic cleansing, and antichrist/satanic Sunday "Lord's Day" and the so-called "Old, Useless, Outdated, and Worthless" Testament of the King James Version of the Christian Holy Bible.
In the Hebrew TANAKH scriptures that Jesus Christ came to validate, redeem, and fulfill by studying them, living by them, teaching them, and dying by and for them, every time "Lord," is mentioned, every "He," "Him," and "You" is capitalized to honor, glorify, and show the proper respect, but in the King James Version of the so-called "Old, Useless, Outdated, and Worthless" Testament, no "thou," "thee," "thy," "his," "he," or "him" is capitalized showing a complete lack of respect, and malicious and intentional disrespect, toward the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths, every Hebrew on Earth, and Israel.
In Christianity, these scriptures are supposed to validate the "New Testament" of the Almighty Abrahamic G-d loving the world so much that He gave His Anointed One as a Passover sacrifice:
This truly is exactly like the Agent Smith virus of The Matrix movies… It's malicious and intentional. It's been like this since 1600 AD with obvious massive reprints for hundreds of years and no corrections…ever.
Psalm 28:1 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") A Psalm of David. Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit. Psalm 28:2 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle. Psalm 28:3 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts. Psalm 28:4 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert. Psalm 28:5 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up. Psalm 28:6 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. Psalm 28:7 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. Psalm 28:8 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") The LORD is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed. Psalm 28:9 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible "Old Testament") Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.
Those responsible for the King James Version of the Christian Holy Bible use the term "lift them up" to describe crucifixion (torture, dehumanization, cursing, genocide, and ethnic cleansing). In the Hebrew TANAKH, "Your very own people" perfectly describes the Hebrews whose accurate translation of the uncorrupted Abrahamic scriptures is the true and only foundation of authentic Christianity. Jesus Christ told His followers it'd be exactly this way and it undeniably is. No true student of the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ can, could, or should take the King James Version of the Christian Holy Bible seriously as a valid and acceptable holistic Christian text. Considering what England did to the Hebrews, and that England's imperialism and slave trade was the nazi blueprint for the Holocaust, true Christians need to discard all of that Old English language and belief system forever and never pair it with the authentic Hebrew texts again.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew English) Pages 1442 and 1443: Psalm 28:1 Of David. O Lord, I call to You; my rock, do not disregard me, for if You hold aloof from me, I shall be like those gone down into the Pit. Psalm 28:2 Listen to my plea for mercy when I cry out to You, when I lift my hands toward Your inner sanctuary. Psalm 28:3 Do not count me with the wicked and evildoers who profess goodwill toward their fellows while malice is in their heart. Psalm 28:4 Pay them according to their deeds, their malicious acts; according to their handiwork pay them, give them their deserts. Psalm 28:5 For they do not consider the Lord's deeds, the work of His hands. May He tear them down, never to rebuild them! Psalm 28:6 Blessed is the Lord, for He listens to my plea for mercy. Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him. I was helped and my heart exulted, so I will glorify Him with my song. Psalm 28:8 The Lord is my strength; He is a stronghold for the deliverance of His anointed. Psalm 28:9 Deliver and bless Your very own people; tend them and sustain them forever.
Notice the very important differences between Psalm 28:8: the disassociation and disconnection from the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of "their" versus "my" and the crucial mistranslation of "saving strength" versus "stronghold and deliverance of His anointed" considering that those responsible for the King James Version of the Christian Holy Bible have never stopped engaging in a campaign of antisemitism, genocide, and ethnic cleansing of the native/indigenous Hebrew people of Israel with the undeniable intention of invalidating the Hebrew TANAKH and erasing the truth and authentic knowledge about the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths. Considering that the Hebrew TANAKH is an exact match for; that completely validates all of the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ; in the Christian "New Testament," it's undeniable that the end goal is also to erase the truth and authentic knowledge about the life and teachings Jesus Christ; because they can't just erase Jesus Christ's Father without erasing Jesus Christ, as well. That's whatgenocide and ethnic cleansing look like when the end goal has always been this:
After Constantine the Great's in 321 and the Council of Laodicea from 363, the Christian rulers decided that the commandment of God is no more valid, now being needed to follow the commandments of people, switching in this sense the day of rest to Sunday, and by 361 AD it had become a mandated weekly occurrence.
“Our regard for the Lord’s resurrection, which took place on the Lord’s Day, will lead us to celebrate it on the same principle ”
“And all things whatsoever that it was the duty to do on the Sabbath, these we have transferred to the Lord’s Day as more honorable than the Jewish Sabbath.”
“Christians ought not to Judaize and to rest in the Sabbath, but to work in that day; but preferring the Lord’s Day, should rest, if possible, as Christians."
"Wherefore if they shall be found to Judaize, let them be accursed from Christ.” (Wikipedia)
In Christian eschatology, the Antichrist refers to people prophesied by the Bible to oppose Jesus Christ and substitute themselves in Christ's place before the Second Coming. (Wikipedia)
The term Antichrist (including one plural form) is found four times in the New Testament, solely in the First and Second Epistle of John. The Antichrist is announced as the one "who denies the Father and the Son." The similar term pseudokhristos or "false Christ" is also found in the Gospels. In Matthew (chapter 24) and Mark (chapter 13), Jesus alerts his disciples not to be deceived by the false prophets, who will claim themselves to be the Christ, performing "great signs and wonders". Three other images often associated with the Antichrist are the "little horn" in Daniel's final vision, the "man of sin" in Paul the Apostle's Second Epistle to the Thessalonians, and the Beast of the Sea in the Book of Revelation. (Wikipedia)
Psalm 1:6 (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English TANAKH) Page 1413 For the Lord cherishes the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.
Psalm 1:6 (New International Version Christian Holy Bible) For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
Psalm 1:6 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Cherish: (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English TANAKH) 1a: to hold dear : feel or show affection for 1b: to keep or cultivate with care and affection : NURTURE 2: to entertain or harbor in the mind deeply and resolutely (Merriam-Webster)
Watch over: (New International Version Christian Holy Bible) 1: as in supervise; to be in charge of (Merriam-Webster)
Know: (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) 1: to perceive directly : have direct cognition of 2: to have understanding of (Merriam-Webster)
During the Roman occupation of Israel, before they tortured and murdered Jesus Christ and destroyed the Second Temple of the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of Israel and the Hebrews, the terms "watch over" and "know" accurately described what the Romans and Roman-loyalist traitors subjected Jesus Christ and His apostles to. Those terms are found in the so-called "Old Testament" that was translated from Hebrew and Aramaic by co-conspirators of the people who actually tortured and murdered Jesus Christ, destroyed the Second Temple, committed massive genocidal and ethnic cleansing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Israel and the native Hebrew population, and created the antisemitic, genocidal, ethnic cleansing, and antichrist/satanic Sunday "Lord's Day" that led to the implosion of their empire 55 years after its implementation.
In contrast, "cherish" is the term the Jewish Publication Society's Hebrew-English TANAKH uses to describe how the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths loves, embraces, holds dear, and nurtures all who keep His commandments, loves and blesses the Hebrews, and all who fear, honor, and glorify the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths. All true students of the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ immediately recognize "cherish" as being 100% consistent with the reason Jesus Christ was sent, the reason and ways that Jesus Christ shared the love of His ABBA Father and laid down His life for His Father, Israel, all Hebrews, and all who would believe in Him and His ABBA Father, the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths. And that's why every true student of the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ needs to have a Jewish Publication Society translation of the Hebrew TANAKH, compare it to the closest Christian Holy Bible translation, the New International Version, and ignore the blasphemy of the "Old Testament" of the Christian Holy Bible entirely; because the "New Testament" can't exist in the same book as the "Old Testament" that completely and intentionally invalidates it.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 doesn't state that G-d gave Jesus Christ as a Passover sacrifice to prove He is supervising and in charge of humanity (New International Version Christian Holy Bible).
John 3:16 doesn't state that G-d gave Jesus Christ as a Passover sacrifice to prove He is watching humanity and knows what everyone's doing (King James Version Christian Holy Bible).
"Cherish" is the only accurate and acceptable translation that matches John 3:16 of the "New Testament" about the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ; but it's not found in either of what's considered to be the two most respected and accurate translations of the Christian Holy Bible; it's only found in the Jewish Publication Society's Hebrew-English TANAKH. Friday night to Saturday night is the only weekly seventh-day Sabbath for all who would be the cherished and righteous true students of the authentic life and teachings of Jesus Christ, because Jesus Christ, His apostles, and all of His followers and believers kept the seventh-day Sabbath holy every single week. And isn't it interesting that those suffering under the 5 generation curse of the antisemitic, genocidal, ethnic cleansing, antichrist/satanic Sunday "Lord's Day" were, and still are, unable to accurately translate the same original Hebrew scriptures that Jesus Christ studied, lived, taught, and died by and for; yet the Hebrews who keep the seventh-day Sabbath holy and keep the commandments of the Almighty Abrahamic G-d of the Abrahamic faiths can and do translate the Hebrew TANAKH scriptures accurately so they're a perfect match for the Christian "New Testament"? The simple, obvious, and undeniable answer is: Psalm 1:6 (JPS Hebrew-English TANAKH), Page 1413: For the Lord cherishes the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.
Once again, the Hebrew TANAKH capitalizes every "His," "Him," and "He" referring to "the Lord your God" in the scriptures. And again, the King James Version of the "Old Testament" of the Christian Holy Bible intentionally and maliciously shows complete disrespect and dishonor toward "the Lord thy God" by decapitalizing every "his," "him," and "he" to completely invalidate Jesus Christ's direct teachings and the entire Christian "New Testament." Those responsible for the "Old, Outdated, Useless, and Worthless Testament" of the King James Version of the Christian Holy Bible are undeniably refusing to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" as Jesus Christ taught, lived, and died by and for.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English): Page 398: Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God demand of you? Only this: to revere the Lord your God, to walk only in His paths, to love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, Deuteronomy 10:13 keeping the Lord's commandments and laws, which I enjoin upon you today, for your good. Deuteronomy 10:14 Mark, the heavens to their uttermost reaches belong to the Lord your God, the earth and all that is on it! Deuteronomy 10:15 Yet it was to your fathers that the Lord was drawn in His love for them, so that He chose you, their lineal descendants, from among all peoples--as is now the case. Deuteronomy 10:16 Cut away, therefore, the thickening about your hearts and stiffen your necks no more. Deuteronomy 10:17 For the Lord your God is God supreme and Lord supreme, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no favor and takes no bribe, Deuteronomy 10:18 but upholds the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing him with food and clothing.-- Deuteronomy 10:19 You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:20 You must revere the Lord your God: only Him shall you worship, to Him shall you hold fast, and by His name shall you swear. Deuteronomy 10:21 He is your glory and He is your God, who wrought for you those marvelous, awesome deeds that you saw with your own eyes.
Deuteronomy 10:12 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, Deuteronomy 10:13 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good? Deuteronomy 10:14 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is. Deuteronomy 10:15 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 10:16 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked. Deuteronomy 10:17 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: Deuteronomy 10:18 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Deuteronomy 10:19 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:20 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. Deuteronomy 10:21 (King James Version Christian Holy Bible) He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
Matthew 22:36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ Matthew 22:38 This is the first and greatest commandment. Matthew 22:39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
John 4:22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

Rockland County Cattle Brands:  The seemingly abstract design is Julian H. Salomon’s clever placement of early Rockland County cattle brands. The brands are those of (1) Jacob Blauvelt 1774, (2) Jacamiah Seamen* -1753, (3) Tunis Cuyper-1757, (4) Elisha Babcock- 1775, (5) Daniel De Clark-1756, (6) Jacob Vanderbilt-1753, (7) Abraham Cole—1761, (8) Theodorus Porhanus —1757, (9) John Crumb-1757.

I had always believed that cattle brands were part of the indigenous folk lore of places like Texas, Arizona and the rest of the far west. In fact, I thought they had been invented out there by Mexican vaqueros who were the teachers of the cowboys. I knew they were private brands, or trademarks, that sometimes became the most cherished possessions of their inventors and owners. There were men who named their ranches after them so that we had the 101, the XIT, the Lazy K, the Flying W and the OK Corral.
These brands were proudly worn, like a coat-of-arms, by their owners. Burned into the buttock of a fat cow, they would last as long as the cow did. Both brand and earmarks could be put on easily, could be quickly read and were hard for a thief to change. Immediately they decided questions of ownership, even if a beast had strayed far from home. When cattle roamed the open range, brands and earmarks were the only sure way to sort them out. Brands were such unique and valuable possessions it was required that they be registered and their descriptions made a part of the public record. So in Texas a brand is valid only when registered with the Live Stock and Sanitary Board of the State Department of Agriculture.
That in the 18th century, long before Texas had been born, the same kind of idea was being carried out in Rockland County came as a bit of a surprise to me. In searching for information about Rockland’s Indians I ran across a volume titled, Records of the precinct of Haverstraw, New York, April 1752 to April 1791. This book, in its present form, was published by the Library Association of Rockland County in 1975 as part of what is known as the Budke Collection. George H. Budke, that indefatigable collector and preserver of Rockland County records, had found the book. It was badly battered, torn in three parts and with many pages missing. It turned out to be the earliest collection of public records relating to Haverstraw and other parts of what did not become Rockland County until 1798.
In this book are recorded many earmarks and brands claimed by early settlers. The type of brand used here consisted of the owners’ initials rather than the symbols that later appeared in the west. They were of the kind that, in the west, were applied with a “running iron”, which was used like a pencil, to draw the design, rather than pressing it on with one application. The iron was something like a poker, with a smooth curved end, quite different from the more elaborate iron that bore an entire design.
At the time the brands were recorded there were few walls and tight fences in the county. Cattle were also put out to the pastures of the mountaineers who got a dollar a year for thus “boarding” the farmer’s livestock. Brands and earmarks helped get them sorted out and back to their rightful owners.
Earmarks were made with a sharp knife. They might consist of a notch or notches, slits and holes, used alone or in combination with brands. They had been used on sheep in northern England since early times, so branding and earmarking were brought to this country as it was settled. As the easterners went west, they carried the idea with them.
Along with the brands, Rockland County also had its cowboys for that name was used here long before it appeared in the west. However, the western cowboy would have had another name for the eastern variety. He would have called them “rustlers” or “bandits” for, sad to say, that is what they were. It happened that, when the British were in possession of New York City during the Revolution and the patriots were busy keeping open the line of communication between New England and the southern colonies that crossed the Hudson by King’s Ferry and went on through Suffern and Morristown, the land that lay between the British and American sectors, known as the “Neutral Ground”, actually became a sort of “No Man’s Land”. With little in the way of civil or military control, bands of irregulars and partisans preyed on the civilian inhabitants. While they declared themselves in support of one side or the other, most were out for what they could steal. Even the captors of Andre, the British spy, may have been members of one of the robber bands.
Those whose allegiance lay with the British and Tories were called “cowboys” because they stole cattle that could easily be sold for food to the army in the city. Their opposites, who more or less sided with the patriot cause, were called “skinners” because they almost immediately killed the stolen cattle, carrying off the hides and only as much meat as could easily be transported. The best known of the cowboys, Claudius Smith, has already had his story told in South of the Mountains. One legend about him is that Horse Stable Rock, the huge glacial boulder perched on the side of Round Mountain above the present Antrim Playhouse, was used by Claudius to stable stolen horses, and in that way, came by its name. Now while Claudius may have used the larger rock shelter that bears the name “Claudius Smith’s Den” and is above Tuxedo, “Horse Stable Rock” evidently came by its name honestly and, perhaps before Claudius was born.
It all goes back to gay King Charles the Second, when it was said: “The King is the fountain of all real property and from that source all titles are to be derived.” So, according to that doctrine the monarch owned all of Rockland County to give away —to friends, favorites and very clever people who knew their way through the political woods. These received letters patent which gave them title to good sized chunks of land. Two of these patents, Kakiat Patent, in the southern half of the county, and Cheesecocks in the north, were given away by George and Anne, Charles’ successors.
At the time these patents were granted, the country was little known so boundary designations were bound to be rough and inaccurate. To settle the boundary between Kakiat and Cheescocks a commission was appointed. Its decision, written December 27, 1734 mentions a line which “runs over a mountain called Round Hill, and crosses a large rock called the horse stable rock, lying upon the said mountain on the south side thereof.” So the rock had its name well before the Revolution and the crimes of Claudius.
