Steve and Eddie meet through their local buy-nothing-sell-nothing group when Steve’s getting ready to move in with Robin and he realizes he can't keep everything he owns while trying to merge households with her.

The first time they meet, Steve hadn't even been meaning to actually meet the person picking up the free toaster oven he’s giving away.

He’s setting his toaster oven outside his house on the porch when Eddie hops out of his van to pick it up and it would be rude to duck back inside without saying anything since he obviously sees him coming up, so they make small talk for a minute and Steve has to keep his eyeballs in check because they keep wanting to rake all the way down this guy’s body.

He’s covered in tattoos and so extremely Steve's type, but he knows better than to hit on someone who lives in his neighborhood and is not here for that reason.

He laments to Robin about it the next day, about the hot guy who’s probably using Steve's toaster oven as they speak, who he’ll probably never see again.

Robin rolls her eyes fondly at him and tells him that maybe if he puts more stuff up for grabs on the facebook group, he might see him again, but Steve suspects she just wants him to get rid of more of his stuff so it doesn't overcrowd their new apartment.

The set of items he puts up in the group next is an old blender and a butcher block that has three of the knives missing—seriously where did those knives go? He has yet to find them.

He tries to pretend he isn't secretly hoping Eddie will comment under his post that he wants the items, but he isn't fooling himself when his heart literally skips a beat when the first comment is from Eddie. He messages him and tells him to stop by later that day.

When Eddie shows up, they talk for longer than last time, Eddie asking why Steve needs to get rid of so much stuff and Steve asking why Eddie needs all this stuff—especially considering Steve snooped through the group and saw that Eddie joined over a year ago and hadn't once commented before now (he doesn't mention that thought, but he is thinking it real hard).

Eddie laughs and says he was in the market for a toaster oven when Steve posted one and wouldn't you know it? He also needs a blender—the knife set is just a bonus, he says.

Steve tries not to read too much into it, but his brain is spinning the interaction around in his head for the next week.

He puts up a space heater in the group and within minutes, Eddie has claimed it.

“I should just get your number and text you directly when I find something I want to get rid of next time,” Steve says flippantly when Eddie comes by to grab it that night. “Instead of clogging up the facebook group.”

Eddie smirks at him and steps a little closer. He says, “Maybe you should.”

His neighbor’s car alarm decides to go off right at that moment, ruining the flirty atmosphere with its incessant shrill. They can barely hear each other over the drone of it, so Eddie leaves without giving Steve his number and Steve is left feeling like he keeps having these missed connection moments with Eddie.

In a fit of desperation to see Eddie again, Steve puts up a bunch of random stuff in the group the next day—a shoe rack that’s missing a piece, a step stool, a cheap side table he got from Ikea—and Eddie is still the first person to comment like he’s been refreshing the page, just waiting for Steve to post.

“I left without giving you my number last time and I didn't want to be creepy and message you unprompted,” Eddie says as they load the side table into his van. “I think I was overthinking things and then got kind of spooked.”

“It doesn't look like anything could spook you,” Steve says.

When they get the side table inside the back of the van, Eddie turns to him and admits, “A very pretty boy could.”

Steve can feel his face getting hot. “You think I’m pretty?” he asks.

Eddie nods. “Why do you think I keep coming here? There's no way a person who’s lived here for as long as I have would need all this stuff.”

“Did you need any of it?” Steve asks in a teasing voice. “Or were you just so blown away by how cute my profile picture is that you just had to meet me?”

“Oh, I needed the toaster oven, but everything after that was just to see you again,” Eddie says before biting his lip.

There’s an entire swarm of butterflies in his stomach when Eddie's hand brushes his, when Steve takes Eddie's hand in his and leads him inside his box-filled house.

Later, when they’re making out on Steve's couch—when Steve really should still be packing since he has to move in less than a week—he pulls back to ask, “Wait, so are you gonna put the rest of the stuff you don't need back up for grabs in the group? I feel like that would start so much neighborhood gossip.”

Eddie grins wide and Steve wants to kiss him again, wants to feel his smile against his mouth.

“Oh, we’ll be the talk of the town, baby,” Eddie says, pulling him back in.

These are my headcannons for each character and what I think they would do in modern times.

Arthur Morgan: 

He works a blue-collar job. He would most likely be a ranch hand, but for some reason, I can also imagine him being a plumber or welder. In his free time, he does art and sells prints on Etsy. He is still an old-fashioned gentleman (In a good way), and all of the ladies he meets swoon for him, but he is a himbo and doesn't realize they are practically in love with him. They will give him the most obvious hints, but he will think the women are just being nice. 

Micah Bell:

He's the creepy uncle that you avoid at every family gathering. He hasn't had a job in like 15 years, and no one knows how he can still pay his bills. And he also always smells like lingering alcohol and cigarettes. He will lean too close to his nieces and say extremely concerning things everyone would choose to ignore. Im also getting the vibes that he went to prison for several years, but no one knows what for.

Dutch Van Der Linde:

He sells people scams or owns a pyramid scheme business. Similar to Scentsy products, he somehow convinces all of these people to buy his products to sell to other people, telling them they will get rich by selling these products, but, in reality, he's screwing them over and making most of the money himself. 

John Marston: 

If we are talking about early Red Dead 2 Marston, he still lives in his parent's basement and plays video games on his PC all day. He also watches Andrew Tate and would try to boss Abigail around and tell her he's an alpha male. (She'd slap him and tell him to get over himself) Late rdr2 and rdr1, he's grown out of that mindset and has become a working family man. Potentially also a welder, like I said for Arthur. But any high-paying physical job works.  

I feel like Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, and Tilly would all have a mom group they host every week to discuss their child's newest achievements. Their husbands think that is all they do at the meetings, but they also have in-depth conversations about women's suffrage and how the world caters to men. They think of ways to better the world and bring more women together to discuss these topics and bring light to issues regarding women. The girls would run a pretty popular Facebook group where they let other women express their opinions on those topics. (Arthur is a part of the Facebook group and likes every post he sees and comments shit like, “You're doing great, ladies! Keep up the good work! 😁🥰👍”) 

Sadie would probably occasionally attend these meetings (Although I dont see her having children, she would go for the cheap wine and to hang with her friends). Sadie would also go for the in-depth conversations and bring new thoughts to the table because she is a CEO or manager for a very successful company. She would share her experiences of what it's like to be on top of the men who work for her but still be looked down upon by them simply because of her gender. She would also probably share tips on that Facebook page on how to create a successful business without having to attend years of college and give tips for all stay-at-home moms who want to be more than just moms and wives. (She would also be the cool rich aunt)

Leopold Strauss: 

He would do the same thing. He gives loans to people who he knows won't be able to pay back the money, and then when the bill comes, he'd ruin their lives and probably end up breaking up families/ relationships and send people to jail for not paying back the money in time. 

Charles Smith:

I can see him being a park ranger or working in any conservation field. Potentially even a firefighter who deals with all of the forest fires that happen in places along the West Coast. He’d also be one to do something similar to what he did in the game, but he would work with the local native tribes against companies to try to win back their lands before it gets plowed over for an Amazon factory or something. 

Susan Grimshaw:

I can see her being the mean substitute teacher who yells at everyone to get to work, and then when someone does something slightly wrong, she would yell at the whole class and be like, “In all of my years of teaching, I have never seen a class behave this badly.” Either that or she would work at the front desk of the business Sadie runs. Miss Grimshaw would NOT play with anyone who would try to be rude towards her. 

Bill Williamson: 

Ehem…a police officer. I feel like this one is self-explanatory. But he would mostly sit in his car and do nothing his entire shift. Occasionally pulling someone over for speeding. If they are a white dude, he'd would let them off with just a warning. Poor Lenny would probably get the ticket. 

Lenny Summers: 

I feel like he would be the one to graduate high school early and go to college as soon as possible. I dont know exactly what he would choose for his degree, but I feel like it would be something involving politics. Maybe that wouldn't be his major, but he would take a government class. Or Potentially going into journaling. 

Hosea Matthews:

He's the retired grandpa who used to work in a factory where he made a surprising amount of money and was able to retire early. He spends most of his days walking up at 5 in the morning to watch the sunrise and read the morning paper. And he’ll spend every opportunity he gets to take his kids or grandkids fishing. And if you stay at his house overnight or for the weekend, he gives you a bowl of ice cream every night before bed and recounts every story he could think of that happened from the last time you saw him. (Some of them are surprisingly concerning, but he is one of those badass grandpas)

Sean Macguire:

Similar to John, Sean would spend most of his time gaming on his PC and arguing with children on COD or Fortnite. But he also works at a local bar as the bartender and won't hesitate to argue with the drunk assholes and would slap a bitch if needed. But he also embarrasses himself by flirting with women who will give him dirty looks or tell him that they are gay. (I feel like Karen would also work late-night shifts at the bar with him, but shes also taking online college classes because she wants to be a social worker) 

Molly O’Shea:

Instagram and TikTok influencer 100%, and lots of brands like to sponsor her and send her free stuff (Mostly because of Dutch’s business.) and she posts videos of her and Dutch, and everyone in the comments freaks out about how he is grooming her because of their age difference but she denies it all and says that they are actually in love.  But then she would post a video to that one sound, “My god this reminds me of when we were young.” And Molly be like 8, and Dutch be in his mid-to-late 20s. 

Javier Escuella: 

He’d be a musician. He would have started out in a shitty garage band with Sean and John or something, but then he’d realize he actually wants to be a serious musician while the other guys were just messing around. So he’d leave and make solo music that blows up, and he ends up going on tour, and making a lot of money and becoming hugely successful. 

Reverend Swanson:

The preacher you always see in the corner of the bar Sean works at. And if you went up to him and started talking to him, he’d tell you the most profound things. He would tell you about his life when he was younger and what happened that made him lose hope, but he would motivate you to never give up. He’d be that person you meet by chance for a few seconds that you would never forget. Hosea probably invites him to go fishing with him from time to time. But instead of fishing, Swanson stares at the water ripples in silence. Hosea would let him sit in silence and let Swanson enjoy the company and the time to think while being sober.

I was just gifted a used PS2 for my birthday which made me SO excited… until I looked up the cost of a lot of the games I want to play. Titles like Silent Hill 2 & 3 go for about $100 (USD) typically and the game I’ve been hunting for, Blood Will Tell, averages anywhere between $450- $700. Because these titles didn’t sell well initially but are popular now/have a sense of rarity to them, they cost a fortune. So do you spend a fortune on getting them or live without playing them?

You emulate them or buy from a professional reproducer!

What is emulating?

According to Wikipedia the definition is: “in computing, an emulator is hardware or software that enables one computer system to behave like another computer system. An emulator typically enables the host system to run software or use peripheral devices designed for the guest system.”

TLDR; emulating (in video game terms) is taking a game and playing it on either a system it wasn’t originally made for OR a country/region it wasn’t designed to launch in.

Is emulation illegal?

No, emulating a game isn’t illegal. The only part that would be considered “illegal” is if you don’t own the actual ROM/game you’re emulating. For example, if I download Silent Hill 2 for free off the internet and emulate it on my PS2, that’s considered piracy because I didn’t actually buy the game.

Do I suggest emulating on the PS2, if not what is another option?

No, there’s something you can do that’s a lot easier than emulation. Emulation typically is for playing old games on a new system, commonly a PC. It takes a lot of software/hardware know-how to do and the average joe (me) doesn’t have that.

Another option is buying a reproduction and a reproducer. This requires a rapport with a third party professional and a the right system.

What is video game reproduction?

Reproduction is when a creator completely reproduces a game and burns it onto a disk, making multiple copies off of one game and making them available across different models and regions of the same system. In order to use the reproduction, one needs to download a software on their system that allows you to run homebrew/reproduced content.

Is reproducing a game illegal?

Well… yes. But the brunt of the legal ramifications is on the vendor and there has been no case of a person being charged with buying a reproduced game. Think of it as going to 9anime.to and watching a pirated anime, you’re watching pirated content which is illegal. But 9anime is providing that content and has the target on their back. The vendor I’ll be suggesting is literally on Etsy and has been for years, so that’s how little this is enforced.

If you’re paranoid about this then I obviously don’t suggest this option, I suggest trying to emulate the game but that means you’ll be buying whatever it is at full price. I’m just a random person on tumblr so you don’t have to listen to me at all lmao.

What reproducer do I suggest?

AndresCustoms on Etsy/Facebook Marketplace! He tests his products on many different systems from various different regions. He has an 4.8 star average review. I’ve read the review comments, consumers a very impressed with his work and he actively responds to his reviews. Andre also is easy to get in touch with if you have any questions on how to set up his FMCB cards or games. He only accepts refunds for defect disks of his, since that is his fault. Besides games he sells (average of $25) he also sells the hardware that allows you to play them, they’re FMCB cards ($15) all you do is stick one into the controller port and it’s good to go.

What to look out for with reproductions?

I don’t recommend buying off Ebay, they have a fraud department but you’re likely getting overcharged for what you’re buying. The largest portion of scams are on Ebay.

Scammers often sell reproductions for the cost of the real game titles, not only are you paying way more than it’s worth many of these tend to not work well or at all. That’s why reputable vendors who openly claim to be professional reproducers and have multiple ratings by real customers (i.e. AndresCustoms) are very important to consider when getting reproductions. Never buy a game that is inflated far above market price, unless it is mint condition and graded for collection purposes.

A number of elected officials, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams, law enforcement officers, right-wing media outlets, and far-right extremists have boosted a baseless conspiracy theory that Jewish Hungarian billionaire George Soros or some nefarious shadowy organization is helping to fund the pro-Palestinian student protests at universities across the US.

They are promoting the well-worn antisemitic trope that a puppet master is behind the protests, based on the fact that many of the students at universities like NYU and Columbia erected tents of the same color, make, and model at the same time on their encampments.

But the real explanation for their proliferation is simple: They are cheap, and easy to find. As online publication Hell Gate NYC pointed out, the tents seen being used at the NYU campus encampment are being sold for as little as $15 at the retailer Five Below, while the green model seen at the Columbia encampment is available online from Walmart for as little as $28.

The tents being used by the students are among the top results on Google Search, and students searching Amazon for “tent” would have been prompted to buy the green Camel Crown tent for $35, listed as a best-selling item by the online retailer. It is also available with one-day shipping. Another popular tent seen at the protests has been discounted in recent days, and now costs less than $20.

On Facebook, WIRED uncovered dozens of accounts posting an identical message accompanied by the same picture of the Columbia encampment. The posts had all been published since Wednesday morning, and new posts with the same messaging were still being shared on Thursday morning. “Something odd about those campus tent encampments,” the posts read. “Almost all the tents are identical—same design, same size, same fresh-out-of-the-box appearance. I know that College students are not that rich or coordinated.”

The conspiracy constitutes one of the latest moves in an angry backlash against the peaceful protests, which began earlier this month. The backlash has included calls for strong-arm tactics to dissolve the protests, which have inaccurately been labeled “pogroms” by some.

In many cases, pro-Israel voices have sought to portray the protests as something other than students expressing their First Amendment right to free speech, claiming someone or some group was controlling them. The conspiracy began to take hold on Tuesday, when New York City Police Department’s deputy commissioner of operations, Kaz Daughtry, told Fox 5 NY: “If you look at the tents, where did they all get them from? The same place, the same person? Somebody is behind this, and we're gonna find out who it is.”

The conspiracy grew legs later that same day when Adams echoed Daughtry’s comments: “Why is everybody's tent the same? Was there a fire sale on those tents? There's some organizing going on, there's a well-concerted organizing effort, and what's the goal of that organizing? That's what we need to be asking ourselves.”

Then it made its way to the Fox News airwaves, where host Bret Baier repeated the baseless allegations. Meanwhile, on NewsNation, Republican representative Virginia Foxx, who chairs the House Committee on Education and Labor, said: “It’s obvious that someone is funding them. They were well prepared.”

On Wednesday, the conspiracy began to take hold online, with numerous blue-check accounts on X pushing the conspiracy. “Why are all of their tents the exact same make, model and color?” a blue-checked X account called The Persian Jewess wrote, alongside a picture of the encampment at Columbia. “Still think this is a grassroots movement? Hint: It’s not.” The post has been viewed almost 2 million times.

Dozens of other posts on X echoed these sentiments, many of them racking up millions of views and many of them pushing Soros as the source of the funding. “I’m sure this is all just a totally organic protest with their little matching tents and all,” wrote Sean Feucht, a prominent Christian nationalist who is planning a pro-Israel march at Columbia on Thursday. Meanwhile, far-right troll Matt Walsh took the conspiracy one step further by declaring that “the ‘Free Palestine’ movement is just BLM [Black Lives Matter] repackaged.”

In a statement this week, Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine said that its members have been “misidentified by a politically motivated mob.”

So have their tents. Most of those claiming a conspiracy have shared the same single image showing only one type and color of tent at the encampment, but a quick online search of images of the encampment shows the reality is that a wide variety of sizes, colors, and models of tents have been erected.

Man, it’s not the fact that there are people who homeschool that bothers me; it’s that there’s this growing movement on social media that homeschooling parents are objectively better than parents who send their kids to public school, that you’re a negligent parent if you can’t feasibly make homeschooling work for your kids, that if you’re worried about family expenses, the dad is morally obligated to work 80+ hours a week while the kids eat shitty, cheap food and only wear hand-me-downs from yard sales so the mom can stay home and homeschool.

These weird-ass trads are posting online all, “Anyone who says they can’t make homeschooling work is just making excuses! We live on one factory worker’s income, and we make it work because we don’t selfishly indulge in luxuries! We don’t buy snacks at the grocery store, we don’t own a TV, we give our babies Tupperware bins and wooden spoons to play with instead of wasting money on frivolous toys, we never go to the movies or go on trips! The problem is that modern parents just aren’t willing to give up lavish conveniences for the sake of their children!” And yes, I’ve seen Facebook comments saying all of these things, lmao.

Like I’m sorry, but if you have to go out of your way to actively force your kids to live in poverty all for the sake of not sending them to public school, they’re going to grow up resenting you. They’re not going to appreciate being stuck at home all the time with nothing to eat, nothing to play with, nowhere to go, and never having their dad around. Having toys to play with and (good) things to watch and (healthy) snacks to eat aren’t “luxuries” for kids; those things are actually necessary for their growth and wellbeing! Kids benefit from going out in public to watch movies and go to museums and the like, actually!

And before someone comes after me for bullying homeschool parents, this clearly isn’t applying to all parents who choose to homeschool. If it’s what’s best for their kids, and they’re able to feasibly make it work, then great! But I’m just not liking this growing trend of trads insisting your moral obligation as a parent is to raise your kids in substandard conditions like you’re medieval peasants when it’s avoided by making a couple sacrifices against the ~ideal trad lifestyle~ if the finances just aren’t there.

Also, why aren’t these people upset that they feel like parents “should” give up these supposed “luxuries” for their kids? Like instead of noting that a lot of parents can’t homeschool because of finances and promoting societal changes that can help negate this reality, their solution is to instead declare that all families should adopt an impoverished lifestyle, or else the parents are just indulgent and selfish? What a winning argument to convince parents to homeschool. 🙃

The comments for every nice dress or whatever that gets advertised at me on facebook includes somebody shrieking THIS IS SO EXPENSIVE, WHY IS IT SO EXPENSIVE, I WOULD NEVER BUY THIS IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE!!

Clothes have never been this cheap. In human history. EVER. EVER!

Take a look at old clothing ads that listed prices, even as recently as the 1990's but way further back than that, and find an inflation calculator. Clothes used to be way more expensive. Gunne Sax dresses cost $200-$300 in today's dollars, for instance. Go through scans of Delia*s catalogs from the late 1990's and you can basically double the prices and not be far off from what it would cost in today's dollars. Delia*s wasn't cheap but it also wasn't high-end. It was intended to be within reach of most teenage girls--I bought clothes from them with babysitting money, ffs; making $5 an hour.

My mom (and a lot of other women) learned to sew in the 1970's because it was cheaper than buying off-the-rack. People used to knit their clothes (including socks) because it was cheaper than buying!

The dress I saw someone comment on today, has a full skirt (it was so fluffy!!) and is fully lined and is thoughtfully designed to be flattering on an XXS to a 6X--the ad had models shown in EVERY SIZE in their range and the same dress looked fantastic on all of them. THAT TAKES TIME AND SKILL TO DO. Most companies just scale up, which makes it all look like shit on larger sizes.

And on top of that, those dresses were less than $150. I was actually shocked--Selkie's designs that are similar-ish cost more than that, usually in the $300 range. (I think Selkies have more layers and the sheer fabrics are hemmed, though?)

"I won't pay over $50 for a dress." You'll never own a dress as nice as this one, then; unless you win the secondhand lottery. And all your shit is being made by people who work insane hours and still can't feed their kids.

I'm not claiming I'm perfect on this score; I've bought my share of cheap crap from amazon. And also: I get it!!! I've been poor!! (Hell, I still make less than the median income.) But I also don't act like companies that are actually charging enough to pay their workers are trying to rip me off.

Stop getting angry at designers and companies charging what clothes are actually worth; get mad at your bosses and capitalism ensuring you don't make enough money yourself to afford clothes made by people who also make a living wage.

Spring Update 4: Setup and VHS tapes

Every spring update from now on will be about the setup leading up to the capstone rather than tips on putting an animation together. My idea for the setup hasn't changed since the fall semester. I wanted people to write down one happy memory and one embarrassing memory on VHS tapes and then put those tapes into their respective bags. This is an aspect of my project I had to constantly fight my professors over because they kept on trying to overcomplicate it no matter how confidently I answered their questions about my setup. In my mind everything was simple, you had a table with two burlap sacks and stacks of VHS tapes. After audience members watched my animation they would come over to the table and read the instructions. They would do as instructed and they would walk away having a more personal connection to my project. It was very frustrating to constantly explain the same thing over and over to my professors and then them respond with "You should think more about this". There is literally nothing to think more about, if the audience member doesn't get it they don't get it or they will have a friend who understands it who can explain it to them and quite honestly I had a million other things I had to "think more about" for my animation so I wasn't going to split hairs over this thing unless they had an actual suggestion like table placement or where I could find VHS tapes. Anyway, before I bought anything I made a very cheap mockup of my setup with household items that were lying around. I then asked my roommate if he could do a little test run for me and tell me if there was anything that confused him. He said that the last sentence of the instructions was a bit unnecessary and it threw him a bit off but besides that, he understood what he had to do.

I had 71 tapes in total, 61 of those came from a Facebook market post in Toms River, NJ which cost $25 while 10 of them were brand new VHS tapes that came from Amazon which cost $80. Honestly, this was a decision I constantly was mulling over because based on my professors' reactions I had no idea if this would be a complete flop or not. So I had to decide if it was worth shoveling the extra $25 of my own money so that I have a more appealing-looking setup or if I should just buy whatever the capstone budget can get me. Thankfully I bought the extra VHS tapes because it ended up being a great success and a lot of audience members were coming up to me to give me praise for having this extra thing in my project! Thank god too, for the amount of time it took to peel off all the stickers with my fingernails and some rubbing alcohol could have been used to complete my animation a week early. I did get a few comments where some people thought that this was a separate piece from the animation but oh well, I had like 16 VHS tapes that were not used so I would consider it a success. The only problem is that the sticker paper I got from Amazon is a bit too good so trying to peel off the memories has been a very difficult challenge.
