Movie Reviews:
GenerationofSwine: It’s time for the Majestic review….
…RED SCARE!!!!
It makes a play at it in the very start of the film. It loudly proclaims that, HEY, WATCH THIS MOVIE, IT’S ABOUT FREE SPEECH AND THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST!!!!! And it does it as loud as it can…
…and then it kind of forgets what the movie is about up until the last 15 minutes.
However, the bulk of the movie does seem like the kind of film that would fit in the Hollywood Blacklist Era. The plot, the acting, the setting, all seems to be very much a 1950s feel good movie…
…and then it veers off again and delivers on the 1st Amendment moral to end the film with a light heavy hand…if that makes sense.
So, it feels disjointed, but in a way that oddly fits the premise to begin with. Almost as if it is trying to be a movie in a movie, which might have been the point.
Watch it once, it will entertain you. Watch it more than once and you’ll be bored.

THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA (1973) – Episode 188 – Decades Of Horror 1970s
“Nothing is too vile. Nothing is too dreadful, too awful. You need to know the terror, the horror, Lorrimor. You need to feel the thrill of disgust, the beauty of obscenity.” Oh, Freddie Jones, you had me at vile. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr – as they do a ride-along with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee for their last Hammer film together, The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973).

It’s time to cover the final pairing of Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula in Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride! Wait, no… The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973). Two years after the events of Dracula A.D. 1972, Cushing’s Van Helsing discovers Lee’s Dracula is still alive… and living in London… (see what I did there) and is now a wealthy CEO. But, he still has dastardly plans in his cape. Ironically, while this film did not land state-side until 1978 keeping U.S. fans waiting, it is now, sadly, in the public domain… sigh. Regardless, if you watch a sharp HD cut from an original print, you can catch glimpses of the powerhouse horror film company Hammer used to be as Helsing and crew literally use every method possible to dispose of the vampires lurking about. C’mon, despite its questionable quality, you gotta see this.
At the time of this writing, The Satanic Rites of Dracula is available to stream from the Roku Channel, Tubi, Popcornflix, Freevee, Screambox, and a variety of PPV sources. It is also available on Blu-ray from Warner Archives.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Jeff, will be Paul Naschy’s The Werewolf and the Yeti (1975). Or is it Night of the Howling Beast? Or La maldición de la bestia? Or Il licantropo e lo yeti? Or Horror of the Werewolf? Or The Curse of the Beast? Or Hall of the Mountain King? Anyhoo, have you seen any of these?

Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Theaster Gates, from the "Chicago" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Chicago " premiered in September 2016 on PBS. Watch now on PBS and the PBS Video app: https://www.pbs.org/video/art-21-chic...
Theaster Gates first encountered creativity in the music of Black churches on his journey to becoming an urban planner, potter, and artist. Gates creates sculptures out of clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of the South Side into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community.
Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself.

Rutherford Residence is a project designed by Merzbau Design Collective. On a hillside just south of Lady Bird Lake in Austin Texas, the Rutherford Residence reaches skyward to capture views of downtown. The steep topography of the site presented both a challenge and an opportunity. The design process focused on addressing the dual nature of the site– intimate, lush and steep toward the back, open and urban at the front– allowing for a variety of views and experiences as one moves toward and through the home. Photography by Brian Cole and Brian Mihealsick

The exterior entry stair ascends a natural ridge to the elevated front porch, sheltered by the cantilevered dining room and third floor patio above. This second level has a private feel to it, accentuated by a screened porch that extends the living space toward a pool and landscaped hillside beyond.
A steel-framed stair rises through the interior, filtering light from large windows on the west facade, as the experience of the home shifts toward its urban location and panoramic views of downtown. The top floor living area opens onto a large covered patio facing Lady Bird Lake, while the adjacent dining room captures views through a box window. Down the hall, the master suite anchors the back of the house and takes on a treehouse feel, with a balcony overlooking the backyard and pool.
By embracing the topography of the site and taking advantage of the different experiences it provides, the Rutherford Residence is a “city house” that feels like a vacation home.

As a child he suffered a lot in school due to an undiagnosed dyslexia.
At 15 he left school to start working on his first job, as a copy boy for the newspaper Yorkshire Post.
David Bailey, Self-Portrait, 1957.
He stayed between dead end jobs till 1956, when he was summoned by the Royal Air Force (RAF) to serve in Singapore in 1957.
During his short time in the RAF he bought a Rolleiflex camera and started to practice photography.
In 1958 he was demobbed and so he decided to pursue photography.
He bought a Canon Rangefinder camera and tried to enroll at the London College of Printing, but wasn’t accepted due his bad school record.
Later he got a job as an assistant of David Ollins, but was not able to work with photography, so he was very happy when he was called to an interview to work with photographer John French.
In 1959 he started to work with John French as one of his assistants.

Gus Dapperton – Post Humorous
A unique live performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best within new music.
2020 was a large year for Gus Dapperton. The New York indie-pop vocalist dropped his second LP, ‘Orca, ’ which both press and fans recognized for the insightful way this addressed mental health challenges. One outlet called the lp his “ most clear and honest piece of work however. ” Showing off further development, Dapperton wasn’t afraid to include more danceable moments in order to his otherwise plaintive repertoire. At times, ‘Orca’ has a happy-go-lucky vibe, like the disco-tinged “Palms. ” In the same problematic vein, check the job that he plus fellow DSCVR artist BENEE’s did on the feel-good-in-isolation quickly pull, “Supalonely, ” which place the indie kids at the top of the particular charts. Style-wise, the vocalist even ditched his signature bank bowl cut last year, which usually had been his signature seem since his opening-act times at Williamsburg gigs. Yet worry not, he’s nevertheless an unapologetic fashionista. My numbers were so high that he let one of their pals dot some brand new ink beneath his remaining eye. He says the tat symbolizes themes from the concept album. We think it looks great as hell. Same for your two outfits he wore for his DSCVR shows of “Post Humorous” plus “Medicine. ” Hit the to tell us which one’ s your fave.
