Man in a Suitcase: The Whisper (1.16, ITC, 1968)
"McGill! Don't be contemptuous, nor disbelieve me. I do know things. Be careful! I see death when I look at you... walking by your side."
"Oh, well don't worry about him, sir, we're old friends."
#man in a suitcase#the whisper#itc#classic tv#1968#charles crichton#morris farhi#richard bradford#patrick allen#colin blakely#sheila brennan#clifton jones#wallas eaton#patrick jordan#jerold wells#brian hawksley#didi perego#tommy ansah#michael williamson#dick offord#another somewhat challenging episode... there's enough depth to the central character study of Blakely's priest here‚ and the plot is#honestly rich enough‚ to stand a full film treatment‚ perhaps even a novel. it's wonderfully mature and probing television of a kind itc#rarely bothered with; unfortunately it's also problematic in its handling of race and its treatment of Africa. the attitude towards the#african characters is largely condescending (with a beautifully measured performance from Clifton Jones the exception) and the character#responses are tricky. Pat Allen's plantation owner is of course an ignorant and repugnant racist with white supremacist assumptions but it#takes McGill WAY too long to actually react to that (and by extension‚ perhaps‚ it takes the script too long also). he gets a brief#broadly anti colonial monologue at the end of the ep‚ but there's little to show he truly appreciates the issues; nor is there ever any#evidence that his opinion is ever influenced by the black characters around him‚ instead his railing against Allen seems to come as much#from his own personal dislike of the man and his growing understanding of Blakely as he is now (and not as he was in the files and reports)#Bradford‚ incidentally‚ was delighted to find Blakely had been cast in the series again‚ and writer Farhi was similarly starstruck

What are some of your favourite fanfics that you have written? Or read? I'm looking for some more recs haha 😂
Oh this is a good question! I think it depends on what character you're looking for, though. So, I've put some of my all-time favorite fics and a few writers below the cut, but if you want more recs for a specific character, let me know!🤍
I don't really read for a good number of the characters I write for. But, here are some great writers!
@chiefdirector has some AMAZING Tim Bradford stories
@lambertdiary is my go-to for Dalton Lambert fics (Blake is taking a break from writing, but I highly recommend reading everything!)
@thewulf writes LOTR and The Outsiders characters incredibly well!
I am also an avid @luveline fan! Jade's characterizations of Aaron Hotchner, Miguel O'Hara, Remus Lupin, and TASM!Peter Parker showed me what love is.
One of my favorite fics I've ever read is Two Scoops (Jason Todd) by @makethatelevenrings
And, you mentioned my favorite fics that I've written but I can't answer that because I genuinely do not know😂
I reread Me or the Ring (Hal Jordan x fem!reader) yesterday because I'm working on part 2, and I actually really like how it turned out!! I think I did a decent job capturing Hal, especially considering it was my first time writing for him (thank you past me for watching GLTAS over and over). I mean, I absolutely do have ones that I think are better than others, and I could probably pick a favorite or two for each character but not without looking lol.

Compare/Contrast of Bradford Buzzard And Thaal Sinestro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok. Here I’ll be doing a compare/contrast between Bradford Buzzard from the DuckTales (2017) TV series and Thaal Sinestro from the Green Lantern comics. It occurred to me that those 2 have quite a bit in common but are also a bit different. Also, Spoiler Alert for the DuckTales (2017) TV series and the Green Lantern comics. With that out of the way, let’s dive right in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them used to be members of a benevolent organization that wanted to protect the innocent. As shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford was once a member of SHUSH, an organization that wanted to protect the world from evil villains. And as shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #33, Sinestro was once a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an organization that wanted to protect the universe from evil villains. Another similarity between them here is that both of them strongly disagreed with those respective organizations’ methods and believed that those organizations had to rule with an iron fist in order to maintain order. As also shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford believed that SHUSH had to “rule the world from the shadows with an iron fist” in order to maintain order. And as shown in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro believed that the Green Lantern Corps had to rule the universe by instilling fear in order to maintain order. The difference between them here, though, is how they left those organizations in the first place. As also shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford pretty much left of his own volition and later became the CEO of McDuck Enterprises. And as stated in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro was deemed a renegade when the rest of the Green Lantern Corps found out he was ruling his homeworld of Korugar with an iron fist and then his Green Lantern Ring was taken away from him. So, Bradford left SHUSH on his own accord whereas Sinestro was kicked out of the Green Lantern Corps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them went on to help founded a new organization full of evil people in order to use them to spread order. As shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford founded the evil organization known as FOWL with the help of Black Heron. And as shown in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro founded the evil organization known as the Sinestro Corps. The difference between them here, though, is how they wanted to use their organizations to maintain order. As also shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford wanted FOWL to “rule the world from the shadows with an iron fist”. And as shown in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro wanted the Sinestro Corp to instill fear across the universe. So, Bradford wanted FOWL to rule from the shadows whereas Sinestro wanted the Sinestro Corps to instill fear across the cosmos. Another difference between them here is what their endgame was. As shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford wanted to get rid of all “unpredictable factors” such as the McDuck family and even FOWL after it had served its purpose. And as shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #26, Sinestro wanted the Sinestro Corps to wage war against the Green Lantern Corps in order to trick the Guardians Of The Universe into allowing the Green Lantern Corps to use lethal force as part of his plan to slowly convince the universe that the Green Lantern Corps are to be feared in order for the Green Lantern Corps to make his idea of a universe of peace come true. So, Bradford wanted to take down the enemy whereas Sinestro wanted to make the enemy work in his favor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them had an archenemy they wanted to manipulate into staying out of their way. For Bradford, there’s Scrooge McDuck. And for Sinestro, there’s Hal Jordan. As revealed in the episode ‘The Last Adventure Part 3!: Tale’s End…’, Bradford was the one who told Scrooge’s niece Della about the Spear Of Selene which led to Della getting lost in space and thus caused Scrooge to quit adventuring for a long time because of it. And as revealed in Green Lantern Rebirth #3, Sinestro was the one who woke Parallax from their slumber in the Green Lantern Central Power Battery thus allowing Parallax to manipulate Hal Jordan into turning evil shortly after the destruction of Hal’s home of Coast City. So, Bradford caused the adventurer Scrooge to give up on adventuring and Sinestro caused the hero Hal Jordan to give up on his heroism. The difference between them here, though, is exactly how Bradford’s and Sinestro’s machinations caused Scrooge McDuck and Hal Jordan respectively to give up on what they believed in. As @lemonghosti explained in his TBH The Extent Of The Abuse And Isolation That Bradford Enacted Towards Scrooge Is Not Talked About Enough post (that post doesn’t exactly have a title; so, I decided to use its first sentence as its title), Bradford manipulated Scrooge into giving up on adventuring by “taking advantage of his grief (that Bradford himself caused) to make him give up on a crucial part of himself and think of it as trouble”. Sinestro as well as Parallax manipulated Hal Jordan into giving up on his heroism by taking advantage of his trauma from the destruction of Coast City to the point that Hal, as shown in Green Lantern Vol 3 #49, lashed out against the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. So, Bradford caused Scrooge to doubt himself to the point that he gave up whereas Sinestro caused Hal Jordan to think of his way as the only way to the point that he lashed out against the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them refuse to accept the fact that they’re villains and strongly believed in their mission to bring order. As shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure!Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford strongly believed in his mission to bring order to the point that he desperately tried to tell the other villains that he isn’t a villain when he was defeated. And as shown in the Green Lantern Vol 5 #5, Sinestro said to his people that he only wanted what was best for Korugar and refused to believe that he crossed the line. Furthermore, their desire to bring order was so strong that they were both able to wield a weapon that’s powered by great amounts of mental strength in some way. As shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford was able to wield the Sword Of Swanstantine and, as shown in the episode ‘The Split Sword Of Swanstantine!’, Scrooge was able to wield the Sword Of Swanstantine while Black Heron, on the other hand, wasn’t since the Sword Of Swanstantine could only be wielded by those with great mental strength. And as shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #32, Sinestro was able to wield a Green Lantern Ring which, as shown throughout Geoff John’s Green Lantern run, could only be wielded by those who have the ability to overcome great fear. The difference between Bradford and Sinestro there, though, is what kind of strength they had. As also shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, while Bradford began to change Bradford into a more monstrous form since, according to Beakley, it also “amplifies who you are inside”. And as shown in Sinestro Vol 1 #1, Sinestro was able to control his fear and use it to wield his Yellow Lantern Ring, a weapon powered by fear. So, that probably means that Bradford had strength but still hadn’t come to terms with his insecurities about being a villain whereas Sinestro used his own insecurities as a strength.
Well, that’s all for this post.
See you all next time.

"That is, after all, how it works. We don't come here with hatred in our hearts. We have to be taught to feel that way. We have to want to be that way, to please the people who teach us to want to be like them. Strange, to think that people might learn to hate as a way of getting some approval, some acceptance, some love. I thought about all that."
Double biography today. And even a cursory glance at this weekend's headlines will make fairly obvious why I chose to talk about these two people.
Born in 1941 Chicago, Emmett Till was 14 years old when, on August 24, 1955, he was kidnapped and tortured to death by a white mob in Money, Mississippi for the never-proven "crime" of flirting with a white woman. His mutilated body was retrieved from the Tallahatchie River three days later. His mother, Mamie Till-Bradley, made the agonizing decision for her son's bloated, mutilated body to be displayed in an open casket funeral at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, in Chicago. Thousands of people lined up to view the body and more than 50,000 mourners attended the funeral service. The resultant media coverage threw a spotlight on extrajudicial lynchings in the U.S., and forced a greater public discourse on segregation, racial violence, and systemic inequality.
In September of that year Till's accused murderers were ultimately acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury after only 67 minutes' deliberation. Four months later the accused murderers openly admitted to the crime to journalist William Bradford Huie, in an article that would then appear in the Jan. 24, 1956 edition of Look magazine. This article's publication was in many respects a clarion call to justice for many grassroots and local activists, kickstarting the Modern Civil Rights Movement.
Mamie Till-Bradley continued to advocate for social and racial justice for the rest of her life, never passing up an opportunity to educate about the circumstances of her son's murder right on up until her death in 2003. While Till's story remains a part of the American public consciousness (even directly informing the underlying plot of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird), the details tend to become lost to time --glossed over, sanitized. Of late this has been notably mitigated, with 2022's airing of the miniseries Women of the Movement on ABC, featuring Adrienne Warren as Mamie Till-Bradley. In March of 2022, President Joe Biden signed into law the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, and this past October the feature film Till premiered in theaters, directed by Chinonye Chukwu and starring Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Bradley. One attendee at the notorious 1955 trial was future State Sen. David Jordan (D-Greenwood), who successfully sponsored the commissioning of a bronze statue of Emmett Till, unveiled in October of 2022 at Rail Spike Park.
(Read "What Emmett Till's Mother Taught Me About Grief and Justice" by Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin.)
Bottom line here: Emmett Till's story has pointedly NOT vanished into invisibility and obscurity, unlike a great many other lynchings and massacres. But the larger issue is more primal: Emmett Till should still be alive, today --he should be comfortably just into his eighties, possibly enjoying the company of grandchildren. And to pull that very same thread, Amadou Diallo should still be alive; Trayvon Martin should still be alive; Breonna Taylor should still be alive --they should all be into their late-twenties, possibly settling into a career, perhaps starting families of their own.
Tyre Nichols should still be alive.
Incidentally, these biographies all now have a permanent home, rather than subject themselves to arbitrary throttling-down at the murky whims of various social media. Safer and more sensible that way, especially since so many states (mine included, unfortunately) have redoubled their efforts to ensure that this subject matter stays out of school curricula. New to this series? Go here to start the lessons: http://www.petervintonjr.com/blm/start.html
Black History Month kicking off in a few more days, my friends. More biographies and accompanying art, still to come. I feel as though I keep repeating this, but: we've a lot still to learn. So go study.
