Interview: Adam Gregory (Director) of Bloodstock Open Air Festival
We spoke to Bloodstock Festival director, Adam Gregory about this year's festival, digging into 'behind the scenes' aspects, the Lemmy Memorial, the reasons behind the festival opening up some camping grounds a day earlier, being transparent and open to talk both online and in person, some of the more challenging experiences the festival has dealt with over the years, operating on little sleep over the weekend, bin-jousting, moments when he got 'star-struck', and so much more.
Bloodstock Open Air (BOA) is the UK’s biggest independent metal festival. Held at the picturesque location of Walton on Trent in Derbyshire, BOA has won the hearts and minds of fans of heavy rock and metal by consistently showcasing the strongest metal line up on UK soil. Bloodstock Open Air 2024 will take place from August 8th to August 11th 11th. Standard weekend tickets for Bloodstock, priced…

Hey I heard you got the suitcases? I lost mine going to Stansted, would appreciate if you could return it.
Pretty nondescript little case you got there. Inconspicuous. Just like you in your inconspicuous suit with the inconspicuous haircut. Unfortunately, the suitcase is locked. But you take it with you. And you go to the airport station to take the Stansted Express back to London.
Damn, you're on the wrong train. This is the train to Birmingham. The next stop is not for half an hour in Cambridge. Shit, that completely messes up your whole day's schedule. You want to take your laptop out of your laptop bag. A cool can of beer catches your eye. It is just 10:00 o'clock. And you have no idea where this can came from. But it's just the right thing to do! No matter how piqued the other people in the compartment look. You somehow don't feel like working anymore. You enjoy the beer, put on the headphones and listen to music. Even if the music gets louder and louder, you eventually fall asleep. And you wake up when the beer can tips over and the remaining warm beer runs down your shirt and pants. Damn! And you've missed Cambridge, too. How long have you been asleep? The next stop is already Leicester. You take your backpack, sleeping bag and cool bag with the beer and jump off the train before you land in Birmingham.
It's pretty crowded at the station. There are a few other fellows with backpacks and coolers. Everyone is streaming towards the train to Sheffield. You still have your headphones on. Obviously, Sepultura's music is pounding so loudly that the guy next to you can hear it. He starts headbanging. You join in. You sit down in the same compartment on the train, open a beer and listen to the music straight from your cell phone. The other passengers hate you, in doubt, because your T-shirt and jeans are still wet and stink of beer.
Last change to Bloodstock Open Air is in Derby. From there it's only a stone's throw to Burton-on-Trent. And there you join the caravan of other festival-goers. You turn up the music on your boombox. Fuck, yeah! It's going to be a great three days. All you have to do is find a supermarket. You're out of beer again. And hopefully you'll be sober enough to set up your tent.
Tumblr media
When you crawl out of the freshly pitched tent, you are probably clean for the last time for the next few days. The next days will be an orgy of mud, beer and sweat. And loud, honest music. You can hardly wait for the first act. One more sip of beer and off to the Ronnie James Dio Stage!
Thank you, @beautifulmtalheadss-blog, for a cool inspiration!

Metal to the masses!
LAST UPDATED: Feb 15 2023
Ave! Here's a list of various links to all things heavy metal. Doesn't matter if you're just getting into the genre and feeling totally lost, looking for something new to expand your already fvking brvtal taste, or seeking to win a debate under a Facebook post - this post is for you! (I'm by no means an expert, but I do try.)
Archives, music-sharing platforms and news outlets:
Encyclopaedia Metallum - If you want to own someone in an online argument, this is the place to go. Everything on every band, album and genre. When I say "every band", I mean it - even my local thrash outfit with 40 listeners on Spotify have their page. If you create your own account, you can add more pages to the Metal Archive, write reviews, browse forums, et cetera. Just don't fuck around and the mods will leave you be.
Kuttengallerie - A huge gallery of various battle vests and battle jackets, mostly from the 2000s and early 2010s. They're even sorted alphabetically. If you're looking for ideas or references, head on in. It's also part of a larger online forum, which is sadly mostly inactive. (This one's in German, but Google Translate exists, guys. Also, shout-out to my brother in metal Blues for showing me this!)
Rate Your Music - Not exclusive to metal, but you can create lists, rate music (like the name suggests), write reviews, et cetera. Good way to discover new things.
AngryMetalGuy - Funny, scathing, high-quality. One of the most prominent metal blogs. Bonus points from me because TheKenWord is a fan of Artificial Brain. (Big thanks to @dropdeadjack for this suggestion - and many others!)
Bandcamp - You can buy digital tracks, albums, even merchandise. Oftentimes it's "name your price", so look out for bargains. Bandcamp charges very low fees - it pays artists way more than most other platforms do. Also, it has curated collections.
Soundcloud - Good for uploading your own things, as well as finding others' stuff. A sort of alternative to Spotify/Apple Music/et cetera.
Loudwire - Mostly big news and sensations (picture Slipknot's beef with MGK); not a valuable source of information but it is funny sometimes and keeps you up-to-date with the talk of the town. Things like reunions, break-ups, new albums; rock and metal alike.
Metalsucks - Also lighthearted, but seems to be more respected in the metal community itself. Again, keeps you up to date.
Metal Injection - Another fairly reliable metal news outlet.
Documentaries, movies, YouTube channels:
Metal Evolution - Really well-made, high-quality series, but I've only watched part of it myself. By metalheads and for metalheads. Here are links to some episodes: Extreme Metal, Pre-Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Early Metal, Glam Metal.
Banger TV - Hosted by Sam Dunn, the guy who did the Metal Evolution documentary. Lots of interviews, reviews, tips; hell, even a comedy series (Heavy Metal Hitchhiker). They've also started a podcast, apparently.
Heavy: The Story of Metal - Not my favorite, but it does get the point across. Here's a link to episode 4 - Seek & Destroy. You can probably find the rest of the episodes on YouTube.
Heavy Metal Democracy Project - Banger TV strikes yet again. This playlist has videos such as "How to get into death metal", "How to get into thrash metal", so on and so forth.
Festivals:
Wacken Open Air - Germany. Considered by most to be the largest one in Europe.
Hellfest - France. Also a contender to Wacken's title.
Download - UK. The Donington Park one. Not metal-exclusive, one of the biggest festivals in the world. See also: Download Australia and Download Japan.
Bloodstock Open Air - UK.
Maryland Deathfest - US. As the name suggest, mostly death metal.
Louder Than Life - US. Possibly the biggest festival in America.
Aftershock - US. Rock and metal.
Ozzfest - Touring. Put Osborne back on the map.
Knotfest - Touring. Founded by Slipknot.
Summer Breeze - Germany.
Mystic Festival - Poland. Biased because I've been there.
Sweden Rock Festival - Sweden (lol). (Not listing all the Scandinavian ones because we'd be here all day.)
Metaldays - Slovenia. Biased because I almost was there.
Brutal Assault - Czech Republic.
Tuska Open Air - Finland.
Copenhell - Denmark.
Hell & Heaven - Mexico.
Rock al Parque - Colombia. One of the biggest in Latin America.
Hellprint - Indonesia.
Bangalore Open Air - India.
Other:
Guitar Hero - If you've followed me for a while, you'll know that I love that retro mess of a game. Here are downloadable versions of World Tour and Guitar Hero III.
Louder Than Hell - An oral history of metal by Katherine Turman and John Wiederhorn. Interviews with all the big names - hundreds of 'em. (Thanks @gia-is-a-punk-rocker for this one!)

I feel like I'm bothering you...
But I have to say that you and your husband seem to be people I could meet at Wacken Open Air.... I don't know if you know it, but it's a really famous German Metal Open Air festival... and that makes you really likeable!
Don't let these people get you down 💕

I know it's not a weekend yet, but I like the picture
You are never, ever a bother! I've never been to WOA, but have always wanted to! I go to quite a few festivals - I do Roadburn every year, and have been to Hellfest, Bloodstock, Desertfest, Damnation, Temples, and The Great Estate! I am headed to Arctangent next month.
Perhaps we will run into each other one weekend ;) Thank you for your lovely message xoxo

Japan's All-Female Metal Band LOVEBITES Returns With New Bassist And 'Judgement Day' Music Video
Tumblr media
LOVEBITES, the all-female heavy metal band from Tokyo, Japan, has returned from its hiatus with a new member, a new music video and news of a fourth studio album coming in February 2023. The LP is also available to preorder today from JPU Records, and is available physically in three editions.
"Judgement Day", the fittingly titled album, will be the first to feature the band's new lineup, which includes bassist Fami, who was selected after an audition process and is just 20 years of age. The fast, melodic and heavy metal sound that LOVEBITES has excelled at since its debut is still burning strong, but has been sublimated further. Newcomer Fami also brings an added charm to the quintet, including her signature slap technique. The album contains ten completely new songs, mixed and mastered by Finnish masterminds Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila, who have worked on all of the band's studio albums.
Fans can get a taste of the new LOVEBITES today with the release of the digital single and music video to the album's title track, available to download, stream and watch now.
The cover art for the album features a wolf, an incarnation of the band that has appeared on all of LOVEBITES's previous albums. This time, as the title suggests ("Judgement Day"),the wolf clutches scales that weigh good and evil within its jaws, and is captured sprinting between the sun and the moon. Further meaning from the cover art can be discovered in the title track's music video, and further details will likely be revealed in the future too.
"Judgement Day" will be released digitally worldwide on February 22, 2023, and released on CD from JPU Records from February 24, 2023. A video-on-demand and CD bundle is also available directly from JPU Records' web site. It features a documentary of the bassist auditions which includes interviews with the members of the band, as well as Fami while she was still one of the finalists — all with English subtitles. It also includes four studio sessions; "The Hammer Of Wrath", "Golden Destination" and "Shadowmaker" from the audition finals, and "Bravehearted", the first session with Fami as an official member of LOVEBITES. There is also a third edition that includes the CD, the video on demand content and a "Judgement Day" t-shirt. Additionally, 50 orders of this latter bundle will randomly receive a sleeve case that has been signed by the members of the band.
"Judgement Day" track listing:
01. We Are The Resurrection 02. Judgement Day 03. The Spirit Lives On 04. Wicked Witch 05. Stand And Deliver (Shoot 'Em Down) 06. Victim Of Time 07. My Orion 08. Lost In The Garden 09. Dissonance 10. Soldier Stands Solitarily
Tumblr media
LOVEBITES formed in 2016 with vocalist Asami, guitarists Midori and Miyako, bassist Miho and drummer Haruna. The band's EP "The Lovebites" EP was mixed by Mikko Karmila and mastered by Mika Jussila, a team of talented Finnish engineers known for their work with NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM and AMORPHIS. In May 2017 LOVEBITES made their debut and released "The Lovebites" EP through London's JPU Records, followed by full length album "Awakening From Abyss" in October 2017 and had a series of shows in Japan and the U.K.
In 2018 LOVEBITES made their first festival appearance at Vans Warped Tour Japan 2018, as well as a headline show in June for mini album "Battle Against Damnation". In July they participated in Headstrong Fes.18 organized by ANTHEM, followed by performing at the world's biggest metal festival Wacken Open Air in Germany and Bloodstock Open Air in the U.K. They also toured Europe with X-ray Touring. After returning to Japan, LOVEBITES completed their second album "Clockwork Immortality" by the end of the year, and performed at Metal Mania, which also featured LOUDNESS.
LOVEBITES began 2019 by touring Japan, followed by supporting ARCH ENEMY on tour in China. First live album "Daughters Of The Dawn: Live In Tokyo 2019" was released in July, recorded at Mynabi Blitz Akasaka in Tokyo in support of "Clockwork Immortality". The same month the band toured festivals, including Download Festival in the U.K., Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, and Download Festival Madrid in Spain. At Download Festival in the U.K., Asami joined HALESTORM on stage to sing "Love Bites (And So Do I)", the song that gave LOVEBITES their name. When the band returned to Japan they toured Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka before appearing at Summer Sonic 2019. They then joined DRAGONFORCE for their U.K. tour in November as special guests.
In January 2020, the band released third album "Electric Pentagram". It became the band's first album to enter Japan's Oricon Top 10 rankings, peaking at number nine. The band then kicked off tour of Japan in February and released "Five Of A Kind: Live In Tokyo 2020" in July, recorded at Zepp DiverCity, which reached number one in the Oricon Music Blu-ray chart.
In March 2021 they released mini album "Glory, Glory, To The World", which reached No. 10 in the Billboard general chart. Immediately afterwards the band began the "Ride For Vengeance" tour 2021, touring four cities across Japan. In August Miho left the band and it was announced that LOVEBITES would take a break. In the meantime, "Heavy Metal Never Dies – Live In Tokyo 2021" was released in the U.K. as a CD and video on-demand release, featuring the Tokyo show from the "Ride For Vengeance" tour 2021, followed by best album "In The Beginning: The Best Of 2017-2021".
In April 2022, the band held an audition for all nationalities, ages, and genders worldwide to find a new bassist. After a long selection process, fami joined in October of the same year, leading to LOVEBITES once again being composed of five members.
