Freelance Reflections #74
I’ve gone from being worried about having no work to being overwhelmed with how to schedule it and having to turn stuff down. Such is freelance life! I’m worried about some of the schedule as I know how tired I get already (I fell asleep at my laptop this week!) but I also know I will be back in a period of uncertainty come December as I’ll lose a lot of students around that time. I’m…

”I am Happy Because Everyone Loves Me” (1928 - Louis Wain) / “瀕危形態 (Endangered Forms)” (2022 - Red Hong Yi (康怡))
I AM HAPPY BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES ME: It makes me want to live! I AM happy! Everyone loves me! I'm tired of living life where I don't care if I live or die- I don't want to do that! I don't just "not want to die-" no, I want to live! Life is beautiful and I'm a part of it! (anonymous)
(ENDANGERED FORMS): HRNGGGGGGGG there’s something so wordless about this sculpture that i can’t even put into words because i think it speaks for itself. the tiger covered in the net so caringly woven. i think the statement of the net being more painstakingly detailed than the statue itself says something about tigers and their conservation and how much we actually care. the fact that the tiger isn’t painted and is left just roughly stone hewn just sort of hits you. ( @x-ca1iber )
(”i am happy because everyone loves me” is a ink and chalk piece on paper by Louis Wain, and is held at the Bethlem Museum of the Mind along with most of Louis Wain's other works. It measures 14×10.8 cm (5.5 x 4.2 in)
(Endangered Forms)” is a fiberglass and rattan sculpture by Malaysian artist Red Hong Yi (康怡). It measures 220 x 70 x 60cm (86.6 x 27.6 x 23.6 in), and was made for the WWF Tiger Trail 2022.)

Research: Bethlem Gallery
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
•The Bethlem Gallery, established in 1997, is situated on the grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, London. It exists to support contemporary artistic practice and provides a professional space for high-quality artwork, fostered by a supportive artist-focused environment, offering opportunities for experimentation, collaboration, and skills exchange.
•They support the professional development and socially engaged practice of their artists, many of whom have experienced mental health services.
•Bethlem Gallery and Bethlem Museum of the Mind are two unique organisations that work collaboratively to shape a creative and cultural landscape with the aim of encouraging a better understanding of mental health and challenging stigma.
•Service user Martin says “I simply didn’t realise at first that the subject matter of my art was the emotions and feelings of the human condition. Through trauma, I had become utterly confused about my sense of self and the world I was supposed to be a part of… Through intensive compassion-focused therapy at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, I discovered a great deal about distress and common humanity. A huge part of this shift was engaging in art…connecting in such an intimate and honest way allowed me to overcome what I was experiencing…My art and the sharing of it has become even more important now as I continue in my recovery towards self-acceptance and my career as an artist.
•The types of art featured include painting, photography, illustration, sculpture, installations, and multimedia.
•From abstract representations of internal struggles to poignant narratives of resilience and recovery, the artwork exhibited at the Bethlem gallery invites viewers to engage In meaningful conversations surrounding mental illness and well-being.
•The gallery frequently hosts community events, workshops, and artist talks, providing a supportive and inclusive environment for both artists and visitors alike.

Me opinion of museum:
Beautiful pictures and wonderful brilliant presentation about patients & hospital's history. I'd recommend this to service users and associated with service users.

Went to Bethlem Museum of the Mind yesterday for the inspiring and touching Louis Wain exhibition. Since photography wasn’t allowed, I drew some sketches (and got postcards and the cool Rorschach wrapping paper).
A virtual tour of the exhibition is here: https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=zR6xVmLWby2

Louis Wain - The bachelor party (1939)
Oil on canvas; 30 x 60 cm
Wain lived for 5 years in the latter part of his life at Bethlem Hospital. To coincide with the recent movie about him, the Bethlem Museum of the Mind has an exhibition of his work through mid-April, and there's a 360-degree digital tour if you can't make it in person.
