The brief but magical association of KISHORE KUMAR & SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN…

The very mention of their names immediately brings to our mind the evergreen super-hit song ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’ from the film ANDAZ. From the opening prelude to the yodelling to the fast-paced beats – everything about the song became unforgettable! Added to that superstar Rajesh Khanna’s charismatic screen presence turned this song not only into one of the most loved songs of Hindi cinema but also became one of the biggest hits of the careers of  Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar and Shankar-Jaikishen.
ANDAZ (1971): ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’
Shankar-Jaikishen (SJ): The music director duo who revolutionized the very definition of Hindi film music with their path-breaking music and tunes…
Kishore Kumar: The genius actor-singer who created his own path and carved a place in the Hindi film music scene which people cannot even dream of achieving…
Both the singer as well as the music director duo reached dizzying heights of popularity during the years they were active. And yet when we look back it is sad that three of the most loved and cherished musical geniuses of our industry hardly got much opportunity to work together during their long and illustrious careers …
Interestingly they even made their debut around the same time –
Shankar-Jaikishen’s debut film as independent music directors was R K Films’ Barsaat which released in 1949…
Kishore Kumar’s debut film as an actor and a playback singer (sang for Dev Anand) was Ziddi which released in 1948…
Shankar Jaikishen somehow always worked with heroes like Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Biswajit, Joy Mukjerjee, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt for whom Kishore Kumar never got the opportunity to playback. When they worked for Dev Anand they used Mohammed Rafi except for one instance-‘Dooriyan nazdeekiyan ban gayee…’ a Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duet that turned out to be the biggest hit of the film:
DUNIYA (1968): ‘Dooriyan nazdeekiyan ban gayi…’
It was around the late forties that the triumvirate of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar entered the industry, became great stars creating a special niche for themselves and also had their own favourite playback singers singing for them. While Rafi became the voice of Dilip Kumar with Talat Mehmood also contributing in some songs, Mukesh was the voice of Raj Kapoor with Manna Dey singing for him at times. In case of Dev Anand, both Rafi and Kishore Kumar’s voices were used.and hence Kishore Kumar between 1948 and 1968 sang only for himself when he acted or did playback for Dev Anand.
NEW DELHI, KROREPATI, BEGUNAAH, RANGOLI and SHARARAT are the five films for which Shankar-Jaikishen worked with Kishore Kumar where he acted and sang his own songs and what beautiful music they created:
Here is a gem from the 1962 film RANGOLI. What an absolutely haunting song- simple, hummable and so melodious
RANGOLI (1962): ‘Choti si yeh duniya pehchaane raaste hain…’
Interestingly both the above song and ‘Zindagi ek safar…’ from ANDAZ had other singers singing their version but really do people even remember that? For when Kishore Kumar sings, such is the magic and resonance in his voice that the other versions pale in comparison.
A fun-filled Kishore-Lata duet-‘Ik nazar kisine dekha aur ban gaya afsana…’
A soulful solo-‘Rangoli sajaao re…’
Listen to this superb song from NEW DELHI. The simple orchestration, the yodelling, the subtle variations in the song all go to make this a masterpiece!
NEW DELHI (1956): ‘Nakhrewaali…’
NEW DELHI (1956): ‘Milte hi nazr aap mere dil mein aa gaye…’
While Kishore Kumar enjoyed immense popularity as an actor-singer during the fifties and early sixties, he had to undergo a long period of struggle to be considered as a playback singer for other heroes. In fact there are rare instances when other singers like Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey sang for him.
SHARARAT (1957): ‘Hum matwaale naujawan…’
After giving him such a wonderful solo, wonder why did Shankar-Jaikishen settle for Rafi to sing ‘Ajab hai dastaan meri yeh zindagi…’!!! What made them think that Kishore would not have delivered that song brilliantly in his own way?
SHARARAT (1959)
BEZUBAAN (1957)
Only audio of this song is available
To achieve his dream of becoming a playback singer, Kishore Kumar had to become an actor and act for almost 20 years before giving up acting to become full-fledged singer. This phase coincided with the coming of a new star Rajesh Khanna in the horizon and Kishore Kumar became a voice to reckon with for all the actors after 1968.
In 1968 Shankar-Jaikishen gave music in the Dharmendra-Hema Malini starrer TUM HASEEN MAIN JAWAAN. Kishore Kumar got to sing only one song and that too a comical one in the film- ‘Munne ki amma yeh to bata…’. The song did become popular with the masses:
THE FATEFUL YEAR OF 1971:
This year was important for this combination in more ways than one. Not only did they team up to give several super-hits unfortunately, it was also the last year they worked as a team together  for Jaikishen from the duo passed away due to cirrhosis of liver.
Apart from the blockbuster song ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’, the Kishore-SJ combo gave us some of these superb songs also in 1971 :
SOLOS:
LAL PATTHAR (1971): ‘Geet gaata hoon main…’
KAL AAJ AUR KAL (1971) : ‘Bhanware ki gunjan…’
DUETS:
KAL AAJ aur KAL: ‘Aap yahan aaye kisliye…’
This film which launched Raj Kapoor’s son Randhir Kapoor had superb music by Shankar Jaikishen and Kishore Kumar became Randhir’s voice and all songs were super-hit. There were two more lovely duets in the film- ‘Tik tik tik tik…,’ ‘Jab hum honge saath saal ke…’
NAGINA: ‘Tere mere pyar ka andaz hai nirala…’
MAIN SUNDAR HOON: ‘Mujhko thand lag rahi hai mujhse door tu naja…’
The song ‘Naach meri jaan…’ from the same film had Kishore Kumar and Jaikishen making a brief appearance at the beginning of the song…
SEEMA: ‘Waqt thoda sa abhi kuch aur guzar jaane de…’
First in 1966, lyricist Shailendra passed away. On Septemnber 12, 1971, Jaikishen passed away. The team of SJ was hit very badly. Though Shankar did try to keep the flag flying by continuing to compose under the name of Shankar-Jaikishen as per their agreement, but the magic had started fading away.
POST 1971:
Films like JANGAL MEIN MANGAL, AANKHON AANKHON MEIN and DIL DAULAT DUNIYA released in 1972. Probably the music for some of the songs had already been scored by the two together and kept in their music bank. Here are some brilliant songs from these films:
JANGAL MEIN MANGAL: ‘Tum kitni khoobsurat hoy eh mere dil se pucho…’
Here is a rare Rafi-Kishore duet from the film JANGAL MEIN MANGAL picturized on Kiran Kumar and his friends which included  a weird looking Pran: ‘Ae Bagh ki kaliyon sharam karo sharam karo…’
AANKHON AAKHON MEIN: ‘Aankhon aankhon mein baat…’ with Asha
Another duet from the same film:
‘Do baatein pyar bhari kar loon…’with Asha
The Rajesh Khanna-Kishore combo came together again for this film after Andaz but the results were certainly not anywhere near their best. There were a couple of solos and duets by Kishore Kumar:
DIL DAULAT DUNIYA: ‘Saath mein pyara saathi ho…’
Soon offers reduced though Shankar did manage to come up with a few aces with Kishore Kumar:
DO JHOOT (1975): ‘Chalo bhool jaayen jahan ko yahan do ghadi…’
‘Chatri na khol ud jayegi…’
AAJ KI TAAZA KHABAR (1974) : ‘ Mujhe meri biwi se bachao …’
I end this musical blog with this lovely solo from RESHAM KI DORI picturized on Dharmendra.
RESHAM KI DORI (1975): ‘Chamka pasina banke angina…’
There is no doubt that this talented and unique singer-music director combination would have definitely created a different kind of euphoria for whenever they did come together and whatever little work they did together, they created magic. Whether it was industry politics or just destiny which kept them apart, fans remain grateful for the precious and priceless legacy left behind by them…

lyricsquotes.in is a best collection of song lyrics, album information and featured video clips for a seemingly endless array of artists Verses are words that make up a melody as a rule comprising of refrains and chorales. The author of verses is a lyricist. The words to an all-encompassing melodic creation, for example, a show are, be that as it may, normally known as a "lyrics" and their author, as a "librettist". The importance of verses can either be unequivocal or understood. A few verses are dynamic, practically incomprehensible, and, in such cases, their explanation accentuates structure, verbalization, meter, and evenness of articulation. They are for the most part Indias most well known Bollywood vocalists, whose prominence is around the world. While we have included a few tunes from newcomer vocalists likewise in this rundown. So how about we take a knowledge of 2019s new Hindi melody verses. Rappers can likewise make verses (regularly with a variety of rhyming words) that are intended to be spoken musically instead of sung.

Chehre mein tere Khud ko main dhoondhun Aankhon ke darmiyaan Tu ab hai iss tarah Khwabon ko bhi jagah na mile
Yeh mausam ki baarish Yeh baarish ka paani Yeh paani ki boondein Tujhe hi toh dhoondhe Yeh milne ki khwahish Yeh khwahish puraani Ho poori tujhi se Meri yeh kahaani
Kabhi tujhme utrun Toh saanson se guzrun Toh aaye dil ko raahat
Main hoon bethikana Panaah mujhko paana Hai tujhme, de ijazat
Na koi darmiyaan Hum dono hai yahan Phir kyun hai tu bata Faasley…

Musical review of film Yahudi
Tumblr media
Director: Bimal Roy; Producer: Savak B Vacha Artistes: Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Sohrab Modi, Nigar Sultana, Nazir Hussain, Kamala Laxman, Helen, Cuckoo, Tiwari, Baby Naaz, Anwar Hussain, Minoo Mumtaz, Murad, Indira Bansal, Munshi, Bikram Kapoor, Romi, Adil
Tumblr media
This is only film Shankar Jaikishan did for Producer Savak B Vacha, who died even before this film could complete. Also its SJ’s only film for Director Bimal Roy- a legend director, who happened to be producer also for many films- notable were Do Bigha Jamin, Parakh, Devdas, Madhumati etc. He normally worked with Bengali MDs like SDB and Salil Chaudhury, but I think, for Yahudi, Savak Vacha chose SJ.
This is based on historic theme of Romans and Jews (Yahudis) rivalary in Rome thousand of years ago. SJ, master of varieties as they are, blended their music perefectly with situation and time frame of story- lot of arabian touch in music. This movie is a masterpiece, not only for its music but also direction,  acting, screenplay, sets, dialogues, acting and lyrics. Bimal Roy, as we know, was a master director. Film’s dialogues were very popular, eg. “Tumhara khun khun, hamara khun pani hai”. Two great actors of Hindi movies, Sohrab Modi and Dileep Kumar were at their best. The sets were very good and able to create scene of Rome hundreds of year ago. As usual SJ’s music was adding to magic- not only songs but background music too. On top of that simple but soulful lyrics by Shailendra- this film has 7 songs, in which 6 were written by Shailendra and he won first filmfare award for “Ye mera diwanapan hai”.
In the film title, Only Dattaram’s name appeared as Asst. Music Director, so I believe Sebastian was not assisting SJ in this particular movie. Movie start with instrumental music of song “ye duniya , ye duniya” alongwith titles. For a change, this movie doesn’t have any title song. Also there are only 7 songs and its pity, IMO it should have atleast 3 more songs because its romantic story in backdrop of roman-yahudi rivalry and there is only one song picturised on hero Dilip Kumar. Definitely hero deserved couple of more songs- IMO. Out of 7, only 4 songs are picturised on main stars, 3 went to supporting cast. But Bimal Roy used songs’ beautifully to support flow of story and nowhere they looked unnecessary or coming in the way of story.
Here are the songs and commentary on them:
1) ye duniyaa, ye duniyaa, haa_e hamaarii ye duniyaa. Singers: Muhammad Rafi, Chorus; Lyricist: Shailendra
Picturised on supporting actor, only Md. Rafi song of film- lyrics and music give voice to pain of yahudis due to excesses by Romans. Md. Rafi did justice in expressing deep sorrow and pain.
2) bechain dil kho_ii sii nazar, tanhaaiyo.n me.n. Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt; Lyricist: Shailendra
Dance song by Lata and Geeta Dutt- picturised on Helen and Cukoo (?). Its treat to see this for dance lovers. Energy of orchestra and of dancers competing to each other. Traditional orchastrisation of SJ and fast rhythem but still very melodious song. You may not impress with song in first go but after hearing few times, you will fall in love with this song.  I feel SJ should have used Geeta Dutt for more songs in their films.
3) merii jaa.n merii jaa.n pyaar kisii se ho hii gayaa hai. Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Chorus; Lyricist: Shailendra
SJ were not getting best only out of singers but from chorus too and this is one of example. This is picturised on main heroine Meena Kumari who looks very young and beautiful and supporting actresses. Its a sheer melody and more you hear this song, more you will like it. And what a simple way to express feelings by Shailendra- “jinki nigahon ne ghayal kiya, unhi se lenge dil ki dawa, na ham muskurate na wo pas aate, uski mili hai saja kya kare….”
4) aate jaate pahluu mein aayaa ko_ii, mere dil batlaa na chhupaa. Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Chorus; Lyricist: Shailendra
Meena Kumari sings and dances while Dilip Kumar looks at hiding. Shankar Jaikishan actually known for variety and no other MD gave so many different kind of songs so you can not associate a single style with SJ but nevertheless by hearing some songs itself, especially their orchestra, you can identify them as SJ song and this is one of them. Use of violins, mendolin, congo, bongo and dattu ka thheka (dattaram’s rhythem)- a distinctive SJ song. The tune of mukhada is not so ‘catchy’ but antaras’ tunes are more attractive, especially when Lata take alaap aa, aa, aa…..and goes back to Mukhada. The continuously  playing rhythem instruments are the main attraction of this song.
5) dil se tujhko bedilii hai…ye meraa diiwaanaapan hai. Singer: Mukesh; Lyricist: Shailendra
Most hit song of the film, Mukesh beautifully expresses romantic as well as sad feelings at same time! Only song picturised on Dilip Kumar, which is quite unusual given the stardom Dilip kumar was enjoying and looking into his fondness for songs. Mukesh used to be voice of Dilip Kumar in late 40s and early 50s when Rafi was not established- In Naushad’s 1949’s superhit Andaz, Mukesh sang 6 evergreen song for Dilip Kumar while Rafi gave playback to Raj Kapoor!!But then Rafi and Talat Mehmood became voice of him, and Mukesh started getting identified more as Raj Kapoor’s voice. In early 1950s, Mukesh volunteerly left playback to pursue Acting career but miserably failed commercially and was struggling literally to get back his foothold in playback singing. It is said that this song and same year’s “Suhana safar aur ye mausam hasin” again picturised on Dilip Kumar gave him fresh lease of life and after that he never looked back till his death. Ironically he never sang for Dilip Kumar again. It is well known fact that Dilip Kumar wanted Talat to sing this song but Shankar was putting his full weight behind Mukesh. It is said that few people associated with movie wanted Rafi for this song. Shankarji has confirmed on record that Mukesh’s name was finalised by toss but even then Dilip Kumar wanted his approval before song finally goes to film and when he heard recording in voice of Mukesh, he embraced Shankarji for his judgement- for Shankarji made this song keeping Mukesh’s vocal in mind. The moment mukesh starts with lines “dil se tujko bediili hai..” one get immersed in melody of song. Interludes of song are very good and no need to write about orchestra which is outstanding by default as per SJ standard. Two lines of song repeats at the end also.
6) aa.nsuu kii aag leke terii yaad aa_ii, jalte hu_e raag leke. Singer: Lata Mangeshkar; Lyricist: Hasrat Jaipuri
Only Hasrat song of film, a very beautiful sad song, sang perfectly by Lata Mangeshkar. There is arabian touch to orchestrisation and instruments supporting singer like ‘chorus’. This is also one of the great feature of SJ songs, where musical instruments play such prominent role in some of songs, to such extent that without them song loose its sheen. Absolute melody- classic- what to say more?
7)dil me.n pyaar kaa tuufaan na samjhe ko_ii naadaan. Singer: Lata Mangeshkar; Lyricist: Shailendra
Picturised on supporting actress, I could not recognise- may be Kamla Laxman. This is very good dance number with long prelude. SJ used big orchestra for this but still its nowhere become loud. Needless to say Lata’s rendition was very good.
In summary, this is a classic SJ album, definitely in best 15 of them. Everything in music department was great here- lyrics, orchastrisation, rhythem, background music, preludes and interludes of songs, rendition by singers and picturisation- absolutely fantastic!!! !!!!!
I have pasted lyrics of songs in devnagri lipi below. Also given the links, where by clicking you will get lyrics in english fonts too. My sincere thanks to RajPrakashji Ratnam for providing me DVD of Yahudi twice, without which this review was not possible. Due to my limited knowledge of musical instuments and raags, I have not touched that part and that is lacking in review, but hopefully our learned members will add that in their comments to make review more meaningful.
Regards Hitesh

Wishing Khayyam saab many happy returns of the day. Mohammed Zahur "Khayyam" Hashmi, better known as Khayyam, is an Indian music composer whose career spanned four decades (1953–1990). He has won three Filmfare Awards for Best Music in 1977 for Kabhi Kabhie and 1982 for Umrao Jaan, and a lifetime achievement award in 2010 . He was awarded the 2007 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Theatre. He has been awarded the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for 2011. He went to Lahore looking for roles in films. There he also learnt music from famous Baba Chishti who was a famous Panjabi music director. One day Khayyam went to meet Baba Chishti, and after listening to a composition by Chishti sung to him its first part. Impressed, Chishti gave him an offer of joining him as an assistant. Khayyam assisted Chishti for six months and came to Ludhiana in 1943. He was only 17 then. After a stint in the Army in the Second World War, Khayyam went to Bombay to fulfil his dream. He made his debut as Sharmaji of the Sharmaji-Varmaji composer duo with the movie Heer Ranjha in 1948. He went solo after his co-composer Rahman Varma went to the newly created Pakistan post partition. One of his earliest breaks was in the film Biwi in which the song "Akele mein wo ghabrate to Honge" sung by Mohammed Rafi was a huge hit. But he gained greater recognition from the film Phir Subha Hogi starring Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha, in which songs written by Sahir Ludhyanvi and sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle were set to tune by Khayyam, notable amongst them "Wo Subha Kabhi to Aayegi", "Aasman Pe hai Khauda aur Zameen pe Hum" and "Chin-o-Arab Humara". The film Shola Aur Shabnam established Khayyam's reputation as a great composer. The songs written by Kaifi Azmi are some of the greats of the Hindi Film Industry. From Shola aur Shabnam "Jaane kya dhhonti rehti hein ye aanken mujhmen" sung by Rafi and "Jeet Hi lenge Baazi Hum tum" sung by Lata and Rafi, from the Chetan Anand directed Aakhri Khat "Baharon mera jeevan bhi Sawaron" by Lata and "Aur kuch der theher,a ur kuch der na ja" by Rafi. Also, noticeable are songs from the film Shagun which had Khayyam's wife Jagjit Kaur sing "Tum apna ranj-o-gham" and "Tum chali Jaogi". From the film Lala Rukh "Hai Kali Kali ke lab par" sung by Rafi and from Footpath "Shyam-e-Gham ki Kasam" sung by Talat Mehmood. From Mohhabat Isko Kehte hein "Theheriye hosh mein aa lun to chaley jaiyega" by Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur. The 1970s saw Khayyam team up with Sahir Ludhyanvi once again to work in the Yash Chopra-directed "Kabhi Kabhi". The songs were super hits and showed Khayyam's versatility with huge hits like "Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein Khayal ata hai" (Sung by Mukesh), "Tere chehre se nazar Nahin hatti" (Kishore & Lata) and "Mein Pal do pal ka Shayar Hun" (Mukesh). The film Shankar Hussain had Rafi sing "Kahin ek Masum Nazuk si Lardki" and Lata render "Aaap yun Faaslon Se", both classic Khayyam songs. Khayyam's gave memorable music to the late-1970s and early-1980s was from Trishul, Thodi Si Bewafaai, Bazaar and Noorie. Again pairing with Sahir in Trishul he produced great songs like "Mohabbat bare kaam ki cheez hai" and "Janeman tum kamal karti ho" and the light "Gapuchi Gapuchi gam gam". "Hazar rahen" from Thodi si Bewafai and "Aaja re o mere dilbar Aaja" from Noorie and "Dikahyi Diye" from Bazaar are some noticeable songs. Khayyam also created music for the Kamal Amrohi directed "Razia Sultan" and his "Aye dil-e-nadan" sung by Lata capturing the mood beautifully. One of popular song is Cho lene do. Khayyam was still to deliver his best and the opportunity came in Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan in 1981. He made Asha Bhonsle sing songs which are indisputably her best. "In Aankhon ki masti ke", "Ye Kya Jagah hai doston" and "Dil Cheez kya hai" are evergreen. Khayyam also composed non film songs noticeably "Paaon padun tore Shyam, Brij mein laut chalo" and "Ghazab kiya tere Vaade pe Aitbaar kiya". He also composed for Meena Kumari's album, 'I Write, I Recite' featuring nazms of Meena Kumari sung by her. Khayyam has always preferred to work with the poets having strong background of poetry side lining the regular film lyricists. That is the reason one finds poetry playing an equal role in Khayyam's compositions as the music or the singer. Khayyam prefers to give full freedom to the poets to express their views thereby making the expression of the songs more poetic and more meaningful. He has worked with both the contemporary and the legends in the field of poetry. That's the reason one finds in his account the work profiled by Mirza Ghalib, Daagh, Wali Saheb, Ali Sardar Jafri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi, and among the new ones Naqsh Lyalpuri, Nida Fazli, Jaan Nisaar Akhtar & Ahmed Wasi to name a few. Khayyam's music had the touch of ghazal but was rooted in Indian classical music. The compositions were soulful, melodious and emotional, the songs were rich in poetry and purpose and the style was noticeably different from the popular brand of music in those days, which used to be either semi-classical, ghazal or light and peppy. On his 89th birthday, Khayyam announced the formation of a charitable trust — Khayyam Jagjeet Kaur KPG Charitable Trust — and decided to donate his entire wealth to the trust to support budding artists and technicians in India. His wealth at the time of announcement was valued at around 10 crore (US$1.5 million).

The Phenomenal creative genius of Panchamda: Bollywood Music industry is still struggling to catch up even after half a century.
Today the world is observing the Death Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman (27 June 1939 – 4 January 1994) popularly known as Pancham Da.
Music was his life, he use to be always thinking about music, even in his dreams. He could create music out of anything at hand, right from a bunch of keys, Combs, Sand Paper, bamboo, or even physically playing a beat on the back of a shirtless and bewildered session percussionist etc.
Three times winner of Film fare awards,1983 – Best Music Director – Sanam Teri Kasam1984 – Best Music Director – Masoom, 1995 – Best Music Director – 1942: A Love Story and he was nominated for 19 times.
In 1995, Filmfare Awards constituted the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent in his memory. The award is given to upcoming music talent in Hindi cinema. In 2009, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation named a public squarein Santa Cruz after Burman.
Burman’s first hit film as a film music director was Teesri Manzil (1966) and after this super hit Hussain signed Burman and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri for six of his films including Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). Burman’s score for Padosan (1968) was well received.
He filled the world with his joyful music between 1960s to the 1990s, and composed musical scores for 331 films. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few compositions. Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Kishore Kumar and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. He also scored many songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar. He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors and his songs continue to be popular in India even today. A whole bunch of musicians today make a career and living out of remixing his old tracks
Burman received his early education in West Bengal. His father S. D. Burman was a noted music director in Bollywood, the Mumbai-based Hindi film industry. When he was nine years old, R. D. Burman composed his first song, Aye meri topi palat ke aa, which his father used in the film Funtoosh (1956).
Burman’s first released film as an independent music director was Chhote Nawab (1961). When the noted Bollywood comedian Mehmood decided to produce Chhote Nawab.
Some of the notable films in which Burman is credited as the music assistant include Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Bandini (1963), Ziddi (1964), Guide (1965) and Teen Devian (1965). Burman also played mouth organ for his father’s hit composition “Hai Apna Dil To Aawara”, which was featured in the film Solva Saal, and sung by Hemanta Mukhopadhyay.[7]
He revolutionized Bollywood music by bringing wide range of influences from several genres in his scores. Burman’s career coincided with the rise of Rajesh Khanna-starrer youth love stories. He made electronic rock popular in these popular love stories, mixed disco and rock elements with Bengali folk music, used jazz elements, which had been introduced to him by the studio pianist Kersi Lord.
According to Biswarup Sen his popular music can be characterised as one featuring multicultural influences, and characterized by “frenetic pacing, youthful exuberance and upbeat rhythms”.
R D Burman was influenced by Western, Latin, Oriental and Arabic music, and incorporated elements from these in his own music. He also experimented with different musical sounds produced from methods such as rubbing sandpaper and knocking bamboo sticks together. He blew into beer bottles to produce the opening beats of “Mehbooba, Mehbooba”. Similarly, he used cups and saucers to create the tinkling sound for the song “Churaliya Hai” from the film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). For Satte Pe Satta (1982), he made the singer Annette Pinto gargle to produce a background sound. He also rubbed a comb on a rough surface to produce a whooshing sound in the song “Meri Samne Wali Khidki Main” from the film Padosan (1968)
Burman continues to inspire many Bollywood music composers and will continue to inspire them in future also. The magic of Pancham da lives on.

3. Padosan (1968)
Directed by: Jyoti Swaroop
Starring: Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu, Kishore Kumar, Mehmood
Runtime: 157 mins
This light-hearted comedy movie is a must-watch. The story revolves around Bhola (Sunil Dutt) and his lady love Bindu (Saira Banu). It’s one of the best Bollywood movies, filled with great performances and songs—namely Vidyapathi (Kishore Kumar)’s performance and the famous song, Meri Pyaari Bindu. I particularly adore Mahmood’s role as a Tamilian. Many people have disregarded this movie because they believe it shows a Tamilian in bad taste. However I am Tamilian, and I didn’t find that this movie mocked the South Indian culture at all. The key is to take in the movie in the right spirit. Despite his best efforts, he goes unnoticed. So he then seeks out the help of a retired general who has his own techniques and understands the psychology of girls. 7. Gol Maal (1979)
Directed by: Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar) is a recent college graduate desperately looking for a high-paying job. In turn, he pays a visit to Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), the man of traditional values and believes that men who are mustache-less and who play sports lack maturity and character. Ram makes sure that he follows these requirements. The movie revolves around the confusion that happens when Bhavani Shankar sees him Ram Prasad moustache-less in a hockey match. This is an all-time great for Utpal Dutt’s work—a real masterpiece.

This is a romantic comedy movie with effortless comedic performances by Farooq Shaikh and company. The first part of the story is about Siddharth (Farooq Shaikh), who is extremely studious, falling in love with Neha (Deepti Naval), while Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jomo (Ravi Baswani) are just interested in chasing girls. 9. Satte Pe Satta (1982)
Directed by: Raj N. Sippy
Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Ranjeeta Kaur
Runtime: 160 mins
Satte Pe Satta is the story of seven brothers living in a farmhouse. This movie contains many hilarious scenes, unforgettable music, and a great script. The video below here shows the funniest scene of the movie where Amitabh Bachchan is down few pegs and then the trademark dialogue “Daru Peene Se Liver Kharab Hota hai” occurs.

10. Angoor (1982)
Directed by: Gulzar
Starring: Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Deven Verma
Runtime: 141 mins
This is based on Shakespeare’s play “The Comedy of Errors” and, oh, you won’tstop laughing. Angoor is the story of two pairs of identical twins and the confusion all around. One pair is played by Sanjeev Kumar (both characters named Ashok) and the other pair by Deven Verma (both characters named Bahadur). Funny down to the last minute. With more than enough reasons to do a remake; Shahrukh Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, and Kareena will feature in the remake for Sanjeev Kapoor, Deven Verma, and Moushumi Chatterjee, respectively.
