Interview with Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! (C!NCC!) over Zoom video! 

French pop-punk group, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! (C!NCC!), borrowed their name from the classic ’80s film, The Goonies, formed in 2007 and soon captured an ardent fanbase in the US, UK, and Asia, thanks to their high-octane blend of anthemic pop-punk melodies and pummeling hardcore breakdowns.

The team at Fearless Records took notice, signing the band and releasing their debut LP, Something for Nothing in 2011. Following an eventful year of touring – which included supporting slots with Miss May I, Attack Attack!, and Woe, Is Me, and a coveted spot on the Vans Warped Tour – the group went into the studio to record their follow-up with acclaimed metalcore producer Joey Sturgis (Punk Goes Pop series, Asking Alexandria, blessthefall).

The resulting record, released in April 2013, was Pardon My French, featuring such fan-favorites as “Restart,” “Taking Chances,” and “Haters Gonna Hate.” The album was not only a commercial success – debuting at No.15 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart, and No.20 on Top Rock Albums – but also received a warm reception from critics. Alternative Press praised that Pardon My French “explodes with…confidence,” adding that “it’s an exhilarating stop-start ride.” AllMusic touted the album’s “slew of high-energy, fireworks-heavy stadium jams,” while Sputnikmusic declared the album to be “one of the most enjoyable albums” of the year, adding that C!NCC! “deliver a rollicking good time.”

                                                     This success garnered the band multiple headlining tour opportunities, while a deluxe edition of Pardon My French was released just a few months later. In 2016, following their third, and most recent full-length, Get Lost, Find Yourself, the hard-working band decided to take some time away from the spotlight.

Late last year, C!NCC! – which currently consists of vocalist Bertrand Poncet, guitarists Éric Poncet and Paul Wilson, bassist Mathias Rigal, and drummer Bastien Lafaye – announced their return, along with a slew of festival dates. While touring plans were put on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic, Bertrand made an appearance on Fearless Records’ “Fearless at Home” live-stream in May, where he revealed that the band is working on new music – much to the delight of fans around the globe.

FESTIVAL WET° 3ème édition

Du 23 au 25 mars, aura lieu la troisième édition du festival WETº, le temps d’un long weekend. Pendant ses trois jours, le Théâtre Olympia vous invite à une expérience théâtrale unique et fabuleuse avec des spectacles du matin au soir. Les 11 créations du festival WETº 3 investiront 5 lieux de la métropole tourangelle. Vous pourrez vous divertir avec les créations de jeunes artistes émergents repérés par le JTRC ou des spectacles qui interrogent sur le monde d’aujourd’hui et inaugurent le théâtre de demain.  Le Théâtre Olympia ne sera pas le seul lieu à être pris dans la fièvre du festival. Comme l’an passé, La Pléiade (La Riche) et la salle Thélème (salle située sur le site du campus universitaire des Tanneurs, à Tours), accueilleront également plusieurs représentations. Nouveauté 2018, le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours et Le Petit faucheux se joindront à la fête, accueillant respectivement un et deux spectacles.

Au programme :

La rage / et à la fin nous serions tous heureux (Compagnie Le Dahu – Montreuil). Deux hommes, l’un comédien, l’autre ancien détenu. Deux femmes, l’une danseuse, l’autre violoncelliste. À travers leur art, ces deux duos racontent leurs révoltes et leur émancipation.

Je suis la bête (création Julie Delille ; Théâtre des trois parques – Châteauroux). L’adaptation du roman coup de poing d’Anne Sibran, histoire fascinante d’une enfant qui grandit dans la forêt et variation moderne sur le thème de l’enfant sauvage. Seule en scène, Julie Delille nous entraîne dans un univers clair-obscur, une plongée dans l’animalité brute.

J’abandonne une partie de moi que j’adapte (création et mise en scène : Justine Lequette ; Liège /Bruxelles). Influencé par Chronique d’un été (1960) de Jean Rouch et d’Edgar Morin, ce spectacle à base de vin rouge, de swing et de cinéma-vérité, s’interroge sur le sens que nous donnons à nos vies.

Ultra-Girl contre Schopenhauer (texte et mise en scène : Cédric Rouillat/Lyon). Lyon, années 80. Dans son appartement digne d’Almodovar, Hedwige traduit en français les aventures d’Ultra- Girl. Mais, entre deux bulles, les rêves, les souvenirs et les fantasmes s’invitent. Commence un détonnant ballet parlé-chanté, entre chorégraphies siamoises, playbacks doux-amers et fétichisme citationnel, le tout joyeusement pop !

Un jour j’ai rêvé d’être toi (par Anaïs Muller et Bertrand Poncet ; Compagnie Shindo/Arles). Un duo : Bert et Ange. Ils sont comédiens. Ange est en mal de reconnaissance, Bert se rêve femme. À deux, ils jouent : à parler, à vivre et surtout à jouer. Philosophes clownesques, ils (se) font des scènes et des films, passent du coq à l’âne, se reprennent et rient d’eux-mêmes tout autant que de nous.

Le Monde renversé (création du Collectif Marthe ; Premisses Production/Paris/St Etienne). Un nez crochu, un chaudron menaçant ou un balai suspect : celles qu’on appelle aussi les Fiancées du Diable hantent l’imaginaire de l’Occident. Mais que cache ce mythe ? Au terme d’un long travail de recherches, quatre comédiennes s’emparent de la figure de la Sorcière, pour l’incarner, la remettre en question et en tirer un moment de théâtre passionnant, drôle et militant.

Des panthères et des oiseaux (comédie romantique de Quentin Bardou et Jeanne Bonenfant ; jeune théâtre en Région Centre-Val de Loire/Tours). En Valgarie (pays lointain où les nouvelles ne sont pas vraiment bonnes), vivent Débrah et la Borgne, comédienne bien connue. Autour : une panthère, un enfant et deux ou trois fantômes. Ça se débat comme ça peut pour ne pas vivre seul, ça parle d’amours, de deuils et de métamorphoses. C’est une comédie romantique.

Quand et où ? Samedi 24 mars à 17h30 et dimanche 25 mars à 11h/Petit Faucheux

Mon bras (par le Studio Monstre/Poitiers). À mi-chemin de la conférence et du cabinet de curiosité, un jeune homme nous raconte sa vie, sa vraie vie, qu’il a passé le bras levé. Ce n’est pas métaphorique : il a littéralement passé sa vie le bras en l’air. Geste artistique ? Politique ? Provocateur ? C’est l’objet de cette pièce-performance subtile et drôle.

Quand et où ? Samedi 24 mars à 15h30 et dimanche 25 mars à 15h30/Musée des Beaux-Arts

Les Entraîneurs (Tours/Nantes/Angers). À l’occasion de la soirée de clôture, le CDN laisse carte blanche aux Entraîneurs, un collectif de DJs spécialisés dans le disco et les 80’s. Leur projet ? Danser, faire danser et inventer des manières neuves de raconter des histoires, le temps de performances festives, joyeuses et collectives.
