Marie Høeg casually posing in her woolen underwear. She looks self-confident in front of the camera. Possibly, her companion Bolette Berg is the photographer behind the camera. ca. 1895-1903

Berg and Høeg lived life on their own terms, both as romantic partners in a time of little LGBTQ visibility and as business partners running a studio and publishing company when women were highly restricted in their careers — and beyond. But decades after their deaths in the 1940s, another radical aspect of their lives resurfaced, tucked away in boxes of glass negatives marked “private”: the couple eschewing traditional gender norms in playful portraits they took of themselves and loved ones.

Marie Høeg and Bolette Berg: defying gender roles around 1900.
Once in a while, you come across something that catches your eye and immediately makes you wonder: what is going on here? TELL ME!
Imagine my thoughts when I saw this lovely photograph last week.
Where to start? The first thing that struck me was the truly amazing pose of the dog. Next, the haircut. Third: the very typical common studio background which led to the question: who would photograph this, or what kind of a person thought this the best way to let themselves be captured for eternity?
Enter the Norwegian photographers Marie Høeg and Bolette Berg.

I love lesbians;
But my heart burns specially for one kind of lesbian - the one who is comfortable but effortlessly elegant, reject femininity because it’s a prison for the mind and the body, clothes a bit too big but that’s how they are supposed to be and a wicked shine in her eye - The Rascal Lesbian
For example : Marie Høeg (15 April 1866 – 22 February 1949), a norwegian photographer, suffragist and a lesbian
Let’s take a closer look:
I would steal her outfit so bad
Sitting weirdly on stuff is also part of the aesthetic
I know this is underwear clothing but i simply don’t care
With her wife Bolette Berg
(all photos were taken by Hoeg&Berg themselves)

MARIE HOEG
From 1895 to 1903, photographers Marie Høeg and Bolette Berg operated a commercial studio in the Norwegian town of Horten.
Høeg was an active and outspoken suffragist, and used the studio as a meeting place for fellow activists and women interested in the suffrage movement. (Women won the right to vote in Norway in 1913.)
More than three decades after Høeg’s death in 1949, a box of the partners' glass plate negatives marked “private” was discovered on a farm where they once lived.
Now in the collection of the Preus Museum, the photos offer a remarkable glimpse into the photographers’ private gender-bending experiments.
Short-haired Høeg dons numerous men’s outfits, posing in alternately serious and playful tableaux, joined occasionally by Berg and their dog Tuss.
Høeg’s defiant suffragist spirit shines through the images, her costume choices allowing her to occupy traditionally male roles and personas as she campaigns for women’s right to an equal place in society.

Tell us about your fact-checking of the most impressively ahead-of-its-time 19thc gay haircut you've ever seen! What did you learn?? Tell us tell us!
Here’s what I learned: not only were Marie Høeg and Bolette Bergreal, and super gay, and extremely ahead of their time wrt lesbian haircuts, they ALSO pioneered the newsboy cap as a genderqueer fashion accessory
which leads me to believe, since they have so far been spot-on with their fashion predictions thus far, that I will be seeing a large increase in dapper false moustaches within my social circles in the next few years
