Saudade, Saudade (Part five)

THE DAY SHE LOST HERSELF, Balkanic Beach

It's already dawn, and Maro and her friends are playing frisbee in the cold sand. It's not even spring yet, but being outside always brings them such joy, with the beachy wind and salt air.

Ben throws the frisbee to Gjon, but miserabily fails. The frisbee ends up almost at Maro's feet, where she is sitting not paying much attention to her friends.

BEN: Oh, come on! It was the wind, it was a perfect throw!

GJON: (going to get the frisbee) Yeah, just like the past 32 times.

BEN: I was the Frisbee Champion in middle school. I won two years in a row.

GJON: Ben, I went to middle school together. You don't have to lie.

Ben sighs. Gjon bends down to get the frisbee and looks at Maro.

GJON: You alright?

Maro instantly notices him by her side. She nods, and stares at the ocean again.

GJON: Are you sure you don't want to play with us?

MARO: No, it's okay. I'm terrible at frisbee.

GJON: I think Ben brought a volley ball.

Maro smiles.

MARO: I swear I'm fine. I'm just... contemplating the view.

GJON: Okay, okay... I'll leave you alone. But I'll keep an eye on you, because you are in that mood again.

MARO: (confused) Which mood?

GJON: You know, that mood when you overthink everything.

Maro half smiles, because she knows he is right.

MARO: I'm fine, I promise.

Ben calls Gjon, and he takes a last glance at her and goes away to play frisbee again, while Maro keeps watching the distant ocean.

She takes her phone out and sees a couple of messages from Stefan. She sighs, and turns the phone off.

It's been a couple of days where she feels like going backwards, like nothing makes sense again. She can't feel full: she doesn't feel like going out with her friends, nor drawing or playing some ukelele. Food doesn't even taste right. It's just that everything feels so... empty.

She feels a couple of shivers down her arms because it's windy and it's starting to be chiller outisde. She covers her skin with her arms and sighs.

If only she'd never met her... She would be much happier. And she would've been much happier in the past three years.

It hurts to think that she never knew no one romantically apart from her. And she can't stop seeing her everywhere she goes. She lives in her head still. She can't bear with it anymore.

Days are long and nights are sleepless. It's been so many weeks since the last time she slept fine. And she wakes up rutinelly and does everything she is supposed to do, but everything feels so... empty.

And she knows she doesn't have to do it, but she recalls all the good times they had together and play the memories in her head. She knows she is never going to live something like that again. She won't love again.

And Stefan comes into her mind... She knows she is going to hurt him. So bad... she is feeling so guilty about everything.

Why can't anything ever last for her?

It's that feeling again, reminiscing of all her past: saudade, saudade.

My top 3 Eurovision Song Contest entry songs from each country - Part 2: Germany (The second of The Big Five)

I started this list back in 2021 and then...well numerous reasons meant I never posted anymore of them, so as I'm in the Eurovision spirit (despite being not at all happy with yesterday's results lol) I'd try and do a couple more, so next up is Germany.

1: Black Smoke - Anne Sophie - 2015

I can remember Graham saying that this was a last minute addition to 2015's contest as the original entry pulled out, and I still find that puzzling as it was one of my favourites of the year. Although I didn't find the on stage performance anything special, I really like the song, maybe due to the Bond song vibes (I'm a sucker for a good Bond song lol).

2: Taken By A Stranger - Lena - 2011

So this one is actually from before I knew about and watched Eurovision, but I eventually came across it in one of the many compilation videos on YouTube. In my opinion it's a lot better than Satellite (which I don't care for much at all and have no idea how it won tbh lol).

3: Violent Thing - Ben Dolic - 2020

In a parallel world where we were without Covid and Eurovision was able to go ahead in 2020, I know this one was loved. Okay it's generic (dare I say Sweden sounding?) but there is no question that it's a bop. I wouldn't say it's a winner, but it's a great song that I enjoy listening and bobbing my leg to.

Honorable Mention: I Don't Feel Hate - Jendrik - 2021

I have to mention this song. When I originally watched the show in 2021 I wasn't a fan, but I found Jendrik's Eurovision story on YouTube shortly after and thought it was amazing tbh, anyone achieving their dreams is a great thing, and it helped me develop an appreciation for the song. I don't love it or listen to it very often, but I love Jendrik and his message. Also he released a laid back version and it's really good, if you haven't heard that before maybe give it a listen.

Ben Dolic - “Violent thing”

Haha that’s right I’m BACK bitches!!! Well, idk when I’ll update the ranking with #15, but here’s the next update. Since the 2021 season is upon us, I will adjust the ranking a bit. I’ll be a bit more concise, as it’ll help us move along. 

ENTRY ANALYSIS

In a way I feel like Ben Dolic delivered what many people expected Sandro to deliver, then again I don’t think anyone really expected a Ben? I certainly did not expect much from ever clueless, ever foolish Germans, so anything that doesn’t scream self-embarrassment right out the gate is a blessing. Thank you Ben Dolic for blessing us. 

Honestly, I did enjoy “Violent thing” for its own ‘musical value’ (it’s a competent dance-trace drone, not *quite* a “Dance Alone”, but fun enough to impress the impressionable), but over the months, my feelings for this entry have distilled to “omg i FINALLY get to poke fun at Ben Dolic. 😍”. So time to unload.

Ben *very* quickly revealed himself to be an untelegenic dorkopotamus whose Syphonix club banger is a hilariously poor fit. Honestly, this has become an unhealthy obsession of mine - like reading a scary book because I’m too chickenshit to watch the scary movie. Unfortunately the book I’m refering to here is Stephen King’s ‘It’. Have you read that shit??? OMG. Fortunately, *Bennywise* the Dancing Clown is a force of hilarity, not horror. Watching him helplessly muddle and mewl through “Violent thing” is akin to seeing a toddler try on one of his father’s suits: getting lost in the oversized jacket, tying the tie with a clumsy knot, pants sinking to the ankles - yes, it’s an image. WORK WITH ME! Imagine it, plenty more to come.

I can’t really describe my feelings on Ben’s aura in a coherent fashion though. He’s just so... admirably off-putting? It’s as if someone transmogrified a ferret into a human body. A human body somewhere between Tilda Swinton and Lord Voldemort? He resembles this face I sculpted out of polymer clay (note: never sculpt if you have prosopagnosia unless your intention is to scare tumblrista’s into having night terrors)

Or as My Friend André put it when Ben came on during Europe: Shine A Light

this SECONDS before he would sing his ONE line of “Love Shine A Light” in an unstable ovine-like vibrato.😍 

So all in all, it’s a fucking TRAGEDY we never got to experience Ben live in Rotterdam. He would’ve been iconically terrible, if this live performance is any indication. 

The awkward dancing <3 the oversized jacket <3 spending half of the performance with his BACK TO THE AUDIENCE <3 Sporting LOCKDOWN HAIR BEFORE THE ACTUAL LOCKDOWN <3 The “LOOK HOW STREET I AM”ness completely shattered by the fact that he’s an utter dork <3 lol I mean, i (ironically) LOVE all those things about Ben. He’s supposed to be a Loic Nottet, but instead veered *heavily* into Robertoad Bellarosa territory. It’s like ordering an Incredible Hulk Doll and getting your sister’s Ken Doll painted green.  

In short, 😍

So yeah, no shock that Germany cut him loose in the end. It was a rational if fucking HUMORLESS decision. 🙄 Watch them squander this potential opportunity by replacing Ben with some boring cardboard beta bitch. (I would keep my fingers crossed for something similar to “Hypnotized" by Purple Disco Machine and Sophie and the Giants - an actually *amazing* German song that would shine at Eurovision, but knowing ARD I’d expect them will go for a soulless Sheeran monstruosity, bank on it. 🙄)

FREAKY FRIDAY FACTOR

I mean, this is a amazing example of Freaky Friday, right? The sheer beauty of the ever-clueless Germans selecting a Slovene manboy with zero charisma, paring him a sex-on-legs nudisco banger, with no regard of what an utter mismatch it was until they saw the live after the contest was cancelled? This followed by quietly jettisoning him from orbit sometime during the off-season? Perfect arc, 10/10, would read again.
