( an excerpt from a book I found at a thrift store in key west )
“On the flight through towering storm clouds, British journalist Ivor Davis wrote, "Our plane was bucking and bouncing so badly that our stomachs were in our throats the whole way.” To compound the anxiety, psychic Jean Dixon… predicted their plane would crash and three of the four Beatles would perish. During the awful turbulence, Davis described George's face as "gray green."
Reed Pigman was the name of the pilot who flew the Beatles in 1964 during the North American leg of the tour. He was also the one flying them into Key West. On April 22nd, 1966 (without the Beatles on board), he crashed into a hill and died. According to author Bob Kealing, the investigation blamed Pigman’s failure to disclose information relating to his health:
On April 22, 1966, Reed Pigman overshot a runway in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and crashed into a hill. The plane burst into flmes, killing Pigman and eighty-three of the ninety-eight people on board, most of them young soldiers. The investigation blamed Pigman for failing to disclose he was diabetic, had a history of heart disease, and was suffering from arteriosclerosis. In 1964, the Beatles' tour pilot was keeping a high-stress, breakneck schedule just as they were, Pigman was not nearly as healthy as hed claimed, and he was now flying them overnight into Florida's southernmost reaches, over long stretches of open water, through severe turbulence.
- Bob Kealing, Good Day Sunshine State: How the Beatles Rocked Florida
I’ve heard about the psychic and the sometimes bay flights they had, but I’ve never heard about their flight to the keys, nor have I heard that their pilot actually crashed a plane and died two years after this!), but it makes a lot of sense that the flight to Key West was “dreadful.” Even today, that airport and the runway is tiny; definitely one of the rougher landings I’ve experienced (and that was true for me two weeks ago, I can only imagine how it must have been in the 60s and during a hurricane).
It also makes sense that dreadful flight = get drunk and cry about how much you love your friends and how grateful you are to be alive…

The Beatles' Enduring Impact on Pop Culture and Beyond
The Beatles were a highly influential British rock band that formed in Liverpool in 1960 and disbanded in 1970. The band’s original members were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The “first day” and “last day” of The Beatles can be understood in terms of their formation and breakup: John Lennon Paul McCartney George Harrison Ringo Starr “The First Day” of The…
