shin yeonhwa interview with w korea | july 2023 edition
shin yeonhwa recently collaborated with w korea for a stunning cover and pictorial!
in the interview that followed, the actress discussed her role in “crash course in romance”, her growth as an actress, and more.
first of all, congratulations on winning best new actress award at 59th baeksang arts awards for your role as nam hae-yi. you seemed really surprised, were you?
i was so shocked, i was against amazing actresses who had all given incredible performances. i truly hadn’t expected to win any awards so when my name was called i kind of blocked everything out. i saw myself on the screen and i felt really awkward. i don’t remember anything i said. laughs i remember coming off the stage and saying to my manager that the trophy was too heavy.
is the trophy heavy?
it is! heavier than you’d think.
did you find the role to be challenging?
hae-yi was very loved in the drama, and it felt great to be loved as hae-yi. i loved every minute of playing her, even when she did things that annoyed me laughs. i had lots of thoughts before i started the drama. i was worried i might not have been able to play her well. but i knew if i turned it down i’d have lots of regrets. it was a lot of pressure but i’m glad to be getting so much positive feedback.
do you get along well with your co-stars from ‘crash course in romance’?
yes, we still talk and meet often. they’ve been in the industry a lot longer than i have so i got a lot of good advice and talked about my doubts with them. i really cherish those relationships so i hope they last for a long time.
why did you start acting?
i was scouted by someone from my company. it was really shocking. i think they originally wanted me to do modelling but… i’ve always wanted to be an actress. i’ve always loved movies and dramas and so i asked to take lessons.
you have also been receiving a lot of love for your character of bang youngjoo in our blues. that role must have been difficult for you?
i needed to understand youngjoo, but it was hard to get into her difficult situation and connect with her complicated emotions. i wondered if my experience of acting was too narrow and not enough to properly express her heart. i tried hard to follow the instructions that the director and writers had made for me and i felt so much better when the director complimented me saying that i was doing a great job.
what kind of roles would you be interested in going forward?
i really want to do horror and thrillers. i’ve always been a big fan of horror movies since i was younger. i think i’d make a good vampire, don’t you think? laughs i’ve done a movie before now so i know that it is very different to tv dramas, but i’d like to do more movies.

The actor attended an event in Korea, where he showed off his long hair and beard, creating a buzz online. What is the reason behind his new look? And how do fans feel about it? Read on to find out!
Jo In Sung’s Return to the Small Screen
Jo In Sung is one of the most popular and respected actors in Korea. He has starred in many successful films and dramas, such as “A Frozen Flower,” “That Winter, The Wind Blows,” and “It’s Okay, That’s Love.” The actor made his comeback to the small screen after six years with the drama “Moving,” which aired from January to March 2023. The drama was based on a webtoon of the same name by Kang Full, and it told the story of a high school student who moves to a new town with his family after witnessing a murder.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney+ Korea) Jo In Sung played the role of Kang Do Ha, a mysterious man who helps the student and his family. The actor received praise for his charismatic and nuanced performance, as well as his chemistry with his co-stars. “Moving” was a huge success, achieving high ratings and positive reviews from critics and viewers. The drama also won several awards, including Best Drama, Best Actor for Jo In Sung, and Best Director at the 2023 Baeksang Arts Awards.
Jo In Sung’s New Look Sparks Debate Online
After wrapping up “Moving,” Jo In Sung has been busy with his solo activities. However, he shocked everyone when he appeared at an event in Korea with a completely different look.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Osen News) The actor sported long hair and a beard, giving off an “ahjussi” vibe. He wore a casual outfit of a black shirt, jeans, and sneakers. He also wore glasses and a mask, covering most of his face. The photos of Jo In Sung’s new look quickly spread online, causing various reactions from fans and netizens. Some praised the actor for being handsome and stylish, while others criticized him for looking old and unkempt.
Tumblr media
(Photo : News 1) Here are some of the comments from online communities: “He looks like a handsome homeless man.” “He’s still handsome, but I prefer him with short hair and clean-shaven.” “He looks like he’s preparing for a new role. Maybe a historical drama?” “He’s aging gracefully. I love his natural look.” “He looks like a Korean version of Johnny Depp.”
Jo In Sung’s Possible New Project
Many netizens speculated that Jo In Sung’s new look might be related to a new project that he is working on. Some guessed that he might be playing a historical or fantasy character that requires long hair and beard. Kim Tae-ri's Baeksang dress is suspected of counterfeiting... "It's genuine"
Tumblr media
While actress Kim Tae-ri's award ceremony dress was embroiled in a controversy over counterfeit goods, the editorial shop said it was "groundless."
According to Taiwanese ET Today on the 8th, suspicions were raised that the white dress Kim Tae-ri wore at the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards held on the 6th was a counterfeit product.
After the awards ceremony, some Chinese netizens claimed that the dress Kim Tae-ri wore was a fake. The reason was that the details of the dress worn by Hollywood star Dakota Johnson in 2019 were different and that the design of the dress could not be changed during sponsorship.
In response, a netizen asked the dress editing shop to check it directly, and the editorial shop drew a line on the suspicion of counterfeit products, saying, “The clothes provided to Kim Tae-ri are definitely genuine.”
At the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards, Kim Tae-ri received the Popularity Award and Best Actress Award in the TV category for the tvN drama 'Twenty-five, Twenty-One'.

[220506] Kim Tae-ri winning the best actress TV category at The 58th Baeksang Arts Awards 2022, Congratulations! our beloved actress Kim Tae-ri for the second trophy last night!
Translate via withqoRhc :
i really thought it's fine even if i don’t win, and i didn’t think i would win, just now when i was watching senior’s videos, i realized that i didn’t mention my co-stars joohyukie (actor nam joo-hyuk), director, writer and staff  working with me, so i thought if… if i get to go on stage again, i'd like to convey that they've really worked hard, i thank them so much, and really really thank you… what do i do… oh im really sorry... what do i do?
i recently read what i have written in my early 20s, "learning isn't something that would be given by anyone, but is something that you'd have to steal". i totally forgot that i have written this, but i feel like it is written well.
i really stole a lot from heedo, i learned so much from her. it was such an honour to have portrayed her role and i was so thankful. tbh i cant say i was happy (about that), but i was thankful. but, the way i got so much love and this best actress award makes me feel+
is like this whole drama is being congratulated as a whole, so i am soooo happy. I am REALLY REALLY happy right now. I REALLY REALLY wanna say thank you to everyone. going forward i'll work hard to  become a good actress. i wanted to say something cool but idk what to say. i'll take this as an award that  TwentyFiveTwentyOne got. Really thank you so much!

Beyond Evil is a Masterpiece
It is amazing how every detail ties closely with each other in this crime thriller. No filler episodes were needed. It was not dragged. It has an overlapping question that you only get to fully know after 16 episodes, but every episode answers a different question that leads to the ultimate revelation.
Tumblr media
I think, to date, this is the most well-written Korean drama I have ever watched. I am not saying it tops my favorites Reply 1988 and She Was Pretty (those are still my all-time favorites), but in terms of screenplay, Beyond Evil is superb. Now I totally get why it won the Best TV Drama Award and Best Screenplay Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards this year. I think it’s even better than some Western crime shows; probably except for Breaking Bad because this series and Beyond Evil can belong to the same league.
This drama is the perfect example of “show not tell” storytelling. It will keep you guessing until the very end. You have to pay close attention to get hooked on the story. They will not spoon-feed you with all the details at once. Just like a Redditor at r/KDRAMA said, it is like peeling off layers of an onion. The deeper you dive in, the more you see. It also has a more satisfying revenge arc than My Mister (another critically acclaimed, great drama) and Crash Landing on You (also a good drama, but imho overrated and very dragged during the first half).
Tumblr media
Aside from the brilliant writing, they have superb acting and directing as well. Shin Ha Kyun definitely deserved his Baeksang Best TV Actor Award! I think Choi Dae Hoon could have also won the Best Supporting Actor, although I have not watched It’s Okay to Not Be Okay to determine if the winner really deserved the award. The dynamics between Lee Dong Sik and Han Ju Won is amazing. Their care for each other was rarely spoken with words, but you can see through their actions how they value one another. I also like how the series did not force any romance, although I can definitely see some potential spark between Han Ju Won and Yoo Jae I. Too often, dramas force romance even when it’s not necessary. Beyond Evil stayed true to its nature: a psychological crime thriller. It also has a great soundtrack that perfectly fit the scenes. My favorite from their OST is Timeless by BIBI.
Tumblr media
I have read that this is a low-budget drama in terms of production (compared to other dramas released this year) and with that, I think it’s even more commendable how they maximised the talent that went to this show despite working with limited finances. I also love the fact that despite having two male leads instead of the usual FL and ML, this show is actually headed by women (writer: Kim Su-Jin, director: Shim Na-Yeon)
There are so many K-dramas lined up in my watchlist, but I moved Beyond Evil up, and I don’t regret it at all. I rarely watch new dramas because I want to make sure they are worth my time; hence I wait for reviews and awards. If you are looking for critically acclaimed shows, make sure you add Beyond Evil to your list.
Sit back, pay attention, and feel the slow burn of this show with each scene.

favourite color(s): black, purple, blue, pink (I used to hate pink when I was a teen, because it's ~girly~ but I'm an adult now and pink is awesome).
currently reading: nothing at the moment, but I have 4 books on hold (I started reading them, but for whatever reason had to pause), they are: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing, Anxious People by Fredrik Backman and The 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade (will i ever finish this book? i think i started it in 2018, but it's so hard to get through).
last movie: Vicious Fun (2020). It's nothing special, but I didn't hate it.
last tv series: Beyond Evil (2021). Written and directed by women, which is always nice. Shin Ha-kyun and Yeo Jin-goo blew me away. Supporting cast was amazing, the story is gripping and complex, what more can one want. It won best drama, best screenplay and best actor at 57th Baeksang Arts Awards. It's so good ♡
last song:  BTS - Louder than bombs
tea or coffee: coffee, but mostely just water (I used to love tea, but I had too much of it during lockdown and now I can't even look at it without getting nauseous).
sweet or salty: salty (my true love is spice tho)
top 5 songs on repeat:
1. BTS - Come Back Home
2. Sexion d'Assaut - Balader
3. Dreamcatcher - BOCA
4. ATEEZ - The Black Cat Nero
5. Jess Glynne - Don't Be So Hard On Yourself

So, i have a task in school to write a short description about movie, book, or TV show that features a crime and my whole addicted brain and heart can’t write anything besides beyond evil and how good is this drama!! 🥵❤️
Here’s some of its summary, lol
Beyond Evil is a korean drama that features a crime as its story, it tells about a young man called Lee Dongshik that accused guilty for killing his own sister, however, it turned out to be false accusion and the real killer is still on loose. Not wanting innocent people to face wrong accusion like him and want to catch the real killer of his sister, he become a police. After 20 years of self-investigation, another victim found with a same modus operandi as his sister's case, therefore, the chase between him and the killer is start again. The story develop as thrilling and full of mistery film, as Lee dongshik found that his sister death have a string attached into politics, bribery and more. I-- personally--have already fall in love with this drama, it is the best one i've already watch so far. I'm curious who is the killer in entire episodes and i love the chemistry between the characters. If you are interested in this kind of movie, like thrilling and mistery genre, and can go on 16 episodes of korean drama, i recommend Beyond Evil to you, because despite of my subjective appraisal, this drama wins 3 awards in Baeksang Arts Awards, for Best TV Drama, Best TV script and Best Leading Actor.

kahit saan talaga, may makikita kang toxic ‘no? for almost 3 hours, nanood ako ng live stream ng baeksang arts award sa vlive. kahit walang subtitle, for the love of kdramas talaga kaya pinanood ko hahahahaha kahit hindi naman nanalo si jeon mido as best new actress, deserve naman ni kim dami. saka ni ahn hyo seop as best new actor. ang annoying lang talaga ng ibang fans, walang respect AMP haha mahal ko din naman si hyun bin at yejin, hello i stan riri couple kaya. pero di nila magets na may better na kdrama and actors than hyun bin and ye jin. puro sila cloy cloy cloy sa comments, and saying na rigged daw winners ng baeksang. sarap sasampalin hahahahaha try watching other kdrama para naman maging aware sila na hindi lang yung drama na ‘yon ang deserving manalo. kahit alam ko namang si dr ji sun woo (kim hee ae) ng the world of married couple ang mananalo as best actress, i am still rooting for gong hyo jin!!! her acting were on point sa when the camellia blooms, saka si iu!!! ang galing nya rin sa hotel del luna, same with yejin sa crash landing on you. pero hirap kalaban ng ayuda kwin aka dr jin sun woo hahahahahaha. pati na rin sa best actor!! grabe super deserve talaga ni kang haneul!!!!!! ang galing nya sa when the camellia blooms huhu medyo nanghinayang lang din ako for park seo joon kasi ang husay nya din sa itaewon class saka ni hyun bin sa cloy. kaya lang, si haneul talaga ang nangibabaw. super deserve and proud din ako sa when the camellia blooms kasi sila ang nag-daesang for tv series HUHUHU ang husay??? grabe. kaya lang ang dami talagang toxic don sa vlive na yon, hindi matanggap na may mas magaling/maganda sa kdrama o actors na gusto nila. asar.
ayon ang daldal ko pero gusto ko lang naman sabihin na we should respect the winners, hindi naman sila iko-consider as winners if hindi sila magaling diba? saka recommend ko na lang din na panoorin nyo ang when the camellia blooms. hindi kayo magsisisi, i swear. yun lang kthnx for reading dis mwa <3
