They’re ALL the birthday boy! Happy birthday Astro/Atom! (Apr 7!)
just had to stay up and do something for today, although cleaning up is keeping me busy. We’re not gonna talk about how I ran out of space at the top and had to add another paper 💀 I wasn’t quite sure how to represent manga/1963 Astro in the center so I tried to copy Tezuka’s illustration style for him. Not sure I nailed it down, but it was fun trying!

One of my favorite things about Atom in the extended Astro Boy Works universe is that he consistently takes things very literally.
This would make sense at face value. He’s a robot. When asked to draw a still life, he draws the molecular structure. In the 2009 movie, he creates paper planes a la DaVinci’s designs because he wants to see if they are mathematically sound and can do so with precision. In Pluto, when left to his own devices, he gravitated towards reading about insects and memorizing facts. When hatred and sadness were introduced into his system, he expressed this with an equation.
Meanwhile, in Pluto, Tenma acts snide about Uran’s use of descriptive language. It’s in part because he assumes robots have to fake it in order to not express themselves in a way more similar to the way Atom tends to do, but he fails to even consider that Atom’s fascination with facts and tendency to express his view of the world through molecular structures and equations is because THAT IS ACTUALLY JUST PART OF HIS PERSONALITY.

Did a small redesign of atoms 2009 design

Yeah sooo I watched that mess that is astro boy 2009 and wanted to see how Orrin and Stone would look on the 2003 universe
I made Stone's first name Brim bc gunpowder and stuff (and ngl I'm kinda thinking I'm a genius for this one) and based Orrin's traits off Robita and Kip!

i know that astro boy (2009) is near-universally hated by the astro boy fandom. but it is everything to me. when it said, "parents can reject their children for things they can't control." when it said, "you deserve love even if society says you're not worthy of it." when it said, "your destiny isn't just to die." also it has robot communists and that rocks.

can't believe astro boy (2009) taught children how to cope with parental abandonment in such a healthy, levelheaded manner

Okay, so you know how Zog mentions he's "old-school" implying there was a time when robots didn't have to follow the laws of robotics, or maybe these didn't even exist at the time.
So, I believe something happened that forced society to create them, and programmed the robots to follow them. But what kind of incident could have provoked this? Well:

Poor 09 Astro...
He literally has all of Toby's memories and thought he was Toby.
Only for Tenma to tell him he's not who he thinks he is.
Sure that's pretty horrible and what happens in the Japanese continuity anyway but the difference is most versions of Atom thought he was a kid named Tobio and didn't really know there was another before him until later. (2003 Atom is the exception but this ain't about him.)
Astro Boy thinks he is THE Toby Tenma because that's what his own memories say, not just his dad.
1963 Tenma has to be all "So you're name is Tobio and I'm your father now." He has to explain cause this new android is a blank slate.
2009 Tenma doesn't have to say shit because to Toby/Astro it's just another day where things are just a little off.
He's just a scared and abandoned robot walking around with the vivid memories of a DEAD FUCKIN CHILD and that's messed up.
Do you think Astro remembers feeling what it's like to be a human?
Do you think he resents the fact he'll never actually be that way?
Do you think he ever mixed up his fake memories with actual experiences leading to him getting all disoriented and confused!?
DID YOU KNOW THIS CHILD IS SUFFERING SOMEONE HELP HIM-
