Every Record I Own - Day 751: Concrete Winds Nerve Butcherer
This is another album highlight of 2021.
So I was tearing down recycling this last weekend and managed to give myself a paper cut underneath my thumbnail, through a section of quick, and out the side of the lateral nail fold. It barely bled, but it hurt like a motherfucker and now it hurts to type. So I’m going with an album today that I don’t have much to say about. This isn’t a knock on its quality as much as it’s a comment on its single-minded utilitarian purpose of spiking your heart rate and getting your ass in motion.
Finland’s Concrete Winds play a savage blend of grindcore and death metal with a few unorthodox flourishes thrown in to keep you on your toes. It’s fast, unrelenting, and tight as hell. At times it reminds me a little of Misery Index-era Assück in its combination of razor sharp performances and frothing-at-the-mouth hostility, but there’s also this dizzying underlying technical aptitude that defies any comparisons. There were other albums in 2021 I went to when I wanted to be bulldozed by an unbridled onslaught of drum battery and guitar bludgeoning, but Concrete Winds satisfied a specific craving for that frantic energy merged with left-field guitar riffage. As a duo, there isn’t a lot of overlapping frequencies and crowding of the sonic field, which gives the two members of Concrete Winds free rein to go nuts on their respective instruments without losing articulation and power.
This isn’t about breakdowns or head-banging, this is about pure adrenaline and rabid intensity. Use as needed when the coffee stops working.

"...BOTH FANS OF BANDS LIKE TERRORIZER, ASSÜCK, AND NAPALM DEATH AND WANTED TO CREATE A BAND IN THOSE STYLES."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a gig poster design for American powerviolence BLACK ARMY JACKET reunion show at the former NYC Cake Shop venue, on September 4, 2010. The iconic movie monster/alien creature from the 1955 sci-fi/horror movie "This Island Earth" can be seen in the background.
MINI-OVERVIEW: "Black Army Jacket was an American grindcore/ powerviolence band… Their ex-members can now be found in bands like HOPE COLLAPSE, MUNICIPAL WASTE, MATT POND PA, BURNT BY THE SUN, and BIRDS OF PREY.
The band was started by Andrew Orlando (ex-guitarist of MILHOUSE and owner of Reservoir Records) and Carlos Ramirez… both fans of bands like TERRORIZER, ASSÜCK and NAPALM DEATH and wanted to create a band in those styles. …Queens, NY-based Chainsaw Safety Records would go on to release the band’s "The Path of Two Swords As One" 7 inch and the band started to tour regionally shortly after… [Soon after] Dave Witte joined the band on drums. Now a four piece, they toured with California’s BENUMB and NOOTHGRUSH."
-- BROOKLYN VEGAN, "BLACK ARMY JACKET reuniting to play Cake Shop & Best Friends Day in Virginia (lineup)," published June 17, 2010
