The envy Arthur and Lancelot would have had for each other must have been insane.

Because Merlin is secretive with Lancelot. He tells him things he would never tell Arthur, he opens up to him and Arthur knows he can never have that trust. Never have that closeness not while he’s king and Merlin a servant.

But to Lancelot he’s been secretive about protecting Arthur. It all resolves around Arthur, opening up about protecting Arthur, giggling over using magic to please Arthur. Lancelot knows it will never be him on the other side of the devotion not like this.

just like he will never be Gwen’s because she loved him once yes but at the end of the day it’s Arthur she chooses.

and in Arthur’s eyes Lancelot is Gwen’s first love will always be known as such and will always be looked at as such even if she loves him she loved Lancelot first and Arthur can’t help but think if she could have him she would.

Anyway I’m so sane about them and at the end of the day how they still understand why it’s like this because they would choose the other as well.

6 headcanons, lets go! I'lll do one for each of my ships this time, just to mix things up

Merwen

Theyre always making some kinda noise. Whether its laughing as they walk down the corridor, singing while they do laundry, or just humming a duet while they make flower crowns in an open field. They even make noises while sleeping, as Merlin mutters in his sleep and Gwen sometimes snores (not nearly as loudly as Arthur tho!). They also just. Dont shut up. Both of them are very talkative, and if they get onto a good enough convo they will NOT stop, even chatting through the night and into the early morning

Elyaine

They trust each other with their lives, but are both private individuals who dont like sharing information about their pasts. Its a matter of respecting the other persons privacy, really; elyan doesnt talk about why he ran away, gwaine doesnt talk about his family, and they both respect each other for it. Theyll open up about the important stuff, but they dont know every little thing about each other and they quite like it that way. They are both incredibly independent people who often need their space with that sort of thing - but also know that if they ever do want to talk about it, their bf will be right there to comfort them

Merwaine

They are very playful, and have a running game where theyre trying to see who can steal percivals dagger first (but no magic!). Loser has to propose. Thats the only reason they havent gotten married yet; theyre both so anxious about being the one to propose (rejection dysphoria is HIGH with these dumbasses) that theyre determined to be the one to win. Theyre also just. Really competitive. And since theyre both extremely competent, and because Percival is ALSO extremely competent, theyve been in a stalemate for 5 years

Freylena

Elena ran away from home to learn more about the sidhe, to make sense of what had happened to her and maybe find herself. This led her to Avalon, where she met the spirit freya. Elena began visiting the lake every day, just to talk to freya some more. Eventually her fathers knights tracked her down to take her home, but she found out that freyas spirit can manifest in any body of avalon water - so elena just took a pouch of avalon water with her to take home. They chat regularly now. Elenas father isnt strict about magic, and doesnt mind, just so long as his daughter is happy

Arlance

Arthur has like a tsundere thing going on where he likes to give Lancelot nice gifts, but then immediately insists thereafter that he DOESNT like lancelot, Lancelot is DUMB and STUPID and its not like he LIKES him or anything (he totally does). Luckily, merlin understood what was going on and managed to clue lance in before he got the wrong idea. Merlin thinks its absolutely hilarious. Lancelot thinks its tragic how arthur is too insecure to be open with his affection, and has refrained from confessing his love to keep arthur from being uncomfortable. The knights all have a bet to see who confesses first

Merelyan

One sassy, judgemental, magic-aligned trainwreck is bad enough. But TWO of them??? In a relationship together?????? Arthur KNOWS theyre talking crap about him behind his back, and one day he WILL prove it. For them, insulting rich people together is practically how they show affection

favourite ships: ive read leon/mithian in some fics which i can see the potential for:D

notp: anyone older than 50, i cant really think of any ships i cant stand with leon??

random headcanon: i think leon writes a lot of poetry in his spare time and i think all of his poems are like. genuinely really good. like i think he’s a REALLY good poet and writes about all sorts of things like sunlight or cozy winter nights or horses or whatever. i think he’s absolutely DELIGHTED when he thinks merlin is teaching arthur poetry and once sought arthur out to share a favourite poem of his with arthur. i also think arthur indulged him bc he felt bad for lying and so it became like. a Thing every week, in which leon would share a new poem. and then he inadvertently became arthurs poetry teacher. 

general opinion: I LOVE LEON!!!! i think i sometimes forget how much i love him, but once i read a fic where he died and i just. i learned that i absolutely Would Not be able to handle that, so. there u go kljsflkjs

notp: oof. um? no one really? besides s3+ morgana, and like. uther and gaius and the like lol

random headcanon: he once found an injured puppy (idk where/other logistics leave me alone) and took care of it/ nursed it back to health, and then literally could not leave it alone bc the puppy would follow him everywhere. i also think he got very attached to the puppy too and almost cried when he realized how large the puppy had gotten. i just think lance was some form of animal whisperer. with dogs, horses, cats. you name it. they all loved him and the dogs would sometimes knock him over bc they were so happy to see him:)

general opinion: lancelot is my favourite. i think it was a personal hate crime against me that he was in less than 10 episodes and i will never forgive the universe for it. i wish he would’ve stopped running& let gwen make her own decisions though

general opinion: ok. DONT HATE ME. i found percival a little bit boring. BUT like. i liked him? his character was kinda just. there. to me. sometimes.

favourite ships: GWART, perwaine, ive seen gwaine/elyan and gwaine/elyan/percival and i would like to know more, also gwaine/lancelot would be the end of the world but i already said that kjdfskljfsl

brotp: (w/...) merlin, the knights, arthur, gwen (i wish we saw more interactions), i think him and s1-2!morgana would’ve been great friends and very terrifying together.  

notp: gwaine/morgana, him and eira, gaius and uther and the like sfijkj

random headcanon: i dont really remember his canon relationship with his sister, (IF HIM HAVING ONE IS EVEN CANON????) but id like to think that they exchange letters every once in a while where they insult each other a lot and the only reason he has a bit of a grudge against her is bc they made a bet once and he lost and she made him do a Very Embarrassing Thing That He Has Not Forgiven Her For And Never Will.

general opinion: i LOVE HIM. i wish we got more backstory on him. i simply think he deserves the world.
