Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant, dir. Ariane Louis-Seize) x VIFF 2023.

This is a surprisingly fresh take on teen vampires in the form of a low-key Quebecois coming-of-age indie comedy about trying to consume human blood and find victims ethically. Sara Montpetit and Félix-Antoine Bénard star as a 68-year-old undead woman in the body of a teenage girl and a depressed high schooler with suicidal tendencies. They form a sweet but strange bond as they try to earnestly help each other achieve their unconventional goals in life. Its exploration of the more mundane but annoying parts of vampiric life makes for an altogether humorous endeavour.

Screened at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Altered States series and screening again at the VIFF Centre from Oct. 21–30.

Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant est le premier long-métrage de la réalisatrice québécoise Ariane Louis-Seize, après neuf courts. Le film emprunte la figure fantastique du vampire et la transpose dans ce coming of age movie. Ainsi, altérant un peu le mythe du vampire, Ariane Louis-Seize met en scène Sasha , une vampire adolescente, qui ne veut pas tuer les humains pour se nourrir par trop grande empathie pour eux, laissant ses parents chasser pour elle. Vint le jour où ceux-ci décident de l’envoyer chez sa cousine, bien plus stricte quant à la nécessité d’apprendre à se nourrir seule. Elle rencontre alors Paul, un adolescent qui cherche à se suicider, n’ayant jamais eu le goût de la vie. Ensemble, ils font un pacte : elle apprend à se nourrir sur lui, lui vit sa dernière nuit. 

En altérant l’imagerie du vampire et en lui donnant une vie de famille, des tranches d’âge desquelles les vampires grandissent, Vampire humaniste cherche un suicidaire consentant évoque avec justesse cette période entre l’adolescence et le début de l’âge adulte où l’on doit voler de ses propres ailes. Sous couvert d’un certain aspect comique et cynique, le film avance gaiement dans ce passage à l'âge adulte et montre une diversité d’émotions et de situations nécessaire pour communiquer avec le spectateur. La diversité d’émotions se retrouve aussi chez Paul, le pendant humain de Sasha, ce qui permet d’aborder des sujets bien différents, en lien avec la santé mentale et le harcèlement. Vampire humaniste réussit donc à témoigner de l’universalité de son propos et cela est joliment réussi, tant un sentiment de complétude ressort à la fin et donnant une perspective optimiste à ce coming of age. L’universalité des thèmes abordés, même via le prisme du vampire, permet à chaque spectateur de se retrouver un peu ou beaucoup dans ce qui est raconté à l’écran, ce qui prouve l’exploitation totale de ce type de cinéma par la réalisatrice.

Visuellement, le film est aussi une petite réussite tant sur l’aspect vintage de la pellicule et le grain qui apportent une forme de douceur et correspond à l’aspect très peu violent du film que dans la retranscription de ce Montréal de nuit. Là encore, on surfe sur les propriétés intrinsèques du vampire : vit la nuit mais les lieux visités sont un peu atypique, vit dans un grand espace mais on est loin de la demeure pour un grand hangar. Cette actualisation suit au final la dynamique familiale nouvelle et permet de gérer l'aspect fantastique sans prendre trop de temps à expliquer le lore. Même si Vampire humaniste peut être perçu comme cucul ou enfonçant des portes ouvertes (surtout avec les questions entourant Paul et la santé mentale/harcèlement), j’ai personnellement aimé cette douceur et le décalage du propos et de la figure du vampire pour créer ce coming of age. La relation platonique mais forte entre Sasha et Paul est aussi très plaisante à regarder, tout comme la dynamique qui se crée entre la cousine Denise et JP, un nouveau vampire.
