REAL WEDDING: SAMANTHA & MITCHELL IN MONTARA, CA
Tumblr media
After a romantic marriage proposal at her family’s lake house, Samantha Starkey and Mitchell Milner decided to plan a destination wedding in Northern California. The couple, who met during a documentary filmmaking course in India, scoured home-rental sites, hoping to find a private property that would accommodate a wedding. As chance would have it, a listing for Villa Montara—an architectural, rustic-modern home located 20 miles south of San Francisco—popped up and the couple jumped on the opportunity. And on a breezy, blue-sky afternoon in October, the couple exchanged vows in front of their 90 guests on a coastal bluff overlooking the Pacific.
Tumblr media
Bride and groom: Samantha and Mitchell  Wedding date: October 7, 2017 Venue: Villa Montara, Montara, Calif. Number of guests: 90 Minted wedding invitation: “Oceans” (foil-pressed) by Wildfield Paper Co. Wedding details card: “Elegant Angles” by Peony Papeterie Wedding response card: “Mountain Sky” by Summer Winkelman (hand-cut by the bride)
Tumblr media
How did you and Mitchell meet?
Mitch and I met during a documentary filmmaking course traveling through India.
Tell us about the proposal!
My family has a lake house I grew up going to in Indiana and that we still visit every summer. This particular summer Mitch was unable to go (or so I thought). I arrived at the lake house, and was immediately sent on a scavenger hunt around town. At the time, I was thinking Mitch was just sorry that he couldn’t make it and set up this fun gift for me. At the end of the scavenger hunt I found him in the middle of the lake on a floating platform decorated in lights and flowers!
Since you’re in the wedding industry yourself (Samantha is a wedding videographer), what were your main priorities in planning your own nuptials?
I didn’t want to get caught up in the details, or to overdo it. I know how easy it can be to be upsold on so many things during the wedding planning process, and then suddenly realize you’ve lost the original vision. With that said, my priorities were keeping it beautiful and as simple as possible!
Did you encounter any hiccups along the way?
My only advice is to not wait to the last minute for the smaller details. For example, I did my programs about a month before the wedding and the blue I picked wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I didn’t give myself time to customize it further.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How did you find your wedding venue?
I originally found it on VRBO. It’s a rental house, unfortunately the owners just sold it though!
Who made your wedding dress?
It was by Flora and was the second dress I tried on.
What did Mitch wear?
A navy suit from Nordstrom.
What did your wedding party wear?
Bridesmaids wore mixed dresses from Show Me Your Mumu and the guys rented suits from The Black Tux.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How did you choose your wedding invitation?
This actually took me a long time, because I liked so many of the designs. It was hard to choose! I narrowed it down to my top three picks, and then compared them to my style board to see which ones worked best. The nicest part is how customizable everything is—I loved that I could mix and match to make my own unique invitation suite.
Were your invitations letterpressed, flat-printed, or foil-pressed?
They were foil-pressed. I love the special touch the gold adds.
Did you add any special touches to your invitations to make them your own?
I had a lot of geometric shapes already going on with my wedding design, so I specifically looked for something on  that I could easily cut into a geometric shape. And that RSVP design (“Mountain Sky” by Summer Winkelman) was perfect to cut!
How did the invitation tie in to the wedding’s overall look and feel?
I wanted our wedding style to incorporate organic movement, contrasted with simple, geometric lines. The invite I chose had watercolor at the bottom that spoke to the “movement” aspect of my wedding style, and then I chose “Details” and “Rsvp” cards with clean lines to bring in the geometric aesthetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who officiated the ceremony?
My father-in-law.
What were some of your favorite wedding-day decorations and/or details?
My favorite was our tripod-shaped altar, because my mom and aunt helped me build it!
Did you exchange traditional vows or did you write them yourselves?
We wrote our vows. I’ve been to so many weddings, and I’ve always felt that it’s more special and touching that way.
Please share some memorable moments from the wedding ceremony.
One of my favorite moments from the day was standing with my dad right before I walked down the aisle. We were in the house looking out this big window that overlooked the ceremony. It was set up in a way that I had a perfect bird’s-eye view of ceremony and everyone else walking down the aisle without them seeing me. We just looked at each other and started to cry.
Did you incorporate any meaningful family or cultural traditions into the wedding day?
We both come from families where faith is very important, and it’s a big part of who we are as well. I’m not very traditional, but I knew I wanted the ceremony to reflect our love for God. So, we took a moment and asked our parents to come up and pray for us privately during the ceremony while music played in the background. It was a really special moment to look back on for all of us!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did you serve signature cocktails?
Yes! We did a Scottish Ale (his) and a Garden Cooler (hers).
What was on the dinner menu?
We did a family-style dinner—I honestly can’t even tell you what was served, I just remember that it was all insanely good.
Tell us more about your escort-card display.
I made the escort cards out of hexagon-shaped tiles. I needed something small that wouldn’t blow in the wind easily, so it was the perfect solution.
What were some of your fondest memories from the day?
All our family and friends from all different parts of life coming together and having fun. It’s truly something that will never happen again, so I cherished every moment!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did you have a first dance?
Yes, our first dance was to “Northern Wind” by City and Colour.
Did you have any after-party?
Montara is a very small coastal town and there is only one bar! So we had a bus at the end of the night that took people there for the after-party. It was honestly so fun to be all dressed up in wedding attire and all show up at this little dive bar!
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We went to Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. It was SO beautiful!
Any advice for couples who are starting to plan their wedding?
You’ve spent a year plus planning your dream wedding, and so much work and time goes into it. However, being in the industry I know how easy it is for the little things to not go as planned. On the wedding day, my advice is to just relax and go with the flow. All the little stuff that didn’t go as planned is nothing in comparison to the declaration of a lifetime you are making to your love.

Alexi Lubomirski, Prince Harry And Meghan Markle's Wedding event Professional photographer
Say the word contract" to a group of wedding event professional photographers, and you will often get the exact same cumulative sigh that the word research" elicits from a group of seventh graders. Speak up. A trusted photographer will understand that your personal privacy and right to the images defeats their desire to be published, so if you define that you don't want the images shared (even if it isn't really in the agreement), they're obliged to follow your lead. Of course, wedding event photographers will also typically get shots of one of the most crucial moments - the newlywed's very first kiss. Skateparks are "one of the world's great kinds of public space" says Iain Borden
In the first in a series of daily videos about London buildings and spaces during Open House London, architecture historian and skateboarding fan Iain Borden sheds light on the design of Crystal Palace Skatepark.
The short movie, made by Jim Stephenson of Stephenson/BishopFilms, is one of a series of movies about overlooked and unusual places in the city commissioned by the festival as part of its 2020 programme.
The films are part of the festival's move to diversify its programme and make it more accessible in the light of the coronavirus pandemic, which has impacted the number of buildings able to throw their doors open to the public.
As media partner for Open House London, Dezeen is publishing a different movie every day during the festival, which runs from 19 to 27 September.
Located in south-east London, the concrete Crystal Palace Skatepark was designed by Canvas in 2018 as a free facility for the community.
It was the result of a petition raised by local skaters four years earlier, sparked by a flurry of open-access skateparks being built across the UK by local councils.
A view of Crystal Palace Skatepark
In the video, Borden sheds light on the design that comprises three unique sections. This includes a deep clover-shaped bowl, a central medium-depth L-shaped bowl and shallow "street course" with various flat and raised banks.
According to Borden, this layout is unique and makes the park a well-regarded venue within the UK.
Its most notable feature is the deepest bowl, which has stone coping and tiling. It is modelled on the curved swimming pools typical of suburban housing in California from the 1970s.
However, the design of these residential Californian pools is an evolution of the world's first kidney-shaped swimming pool, which Finnish architect Alvar Aalto conceived for Villa Mairea in Noormarkku, Finland. The skatepark is therefore in effect "a copy of an Aalto original".
A concrete bowl at Crystal Palace Skatepark
Crystal Palace had been a popular location for skateboarding since the 1970s when the sport boomed in the UK.
It was the location of the first UK National skateboard championships, held in 1977, and was home to a world-famous half-pipe in the 1980s.
While many advanced and commercialised skateparks were built around the UK, Crystal Palace maintained its reputation as a hub for the sport.
Iain Borden has written two books about skateboarding
Borden, professor of architecture and urban culture at The Bartlett architecture school in London, is known for his academic writing about everyday activities. He has written two books about skateboarding: Skateboarding and the City: a Complete History; and Skateboarding, Space and the City: Architecture and the Body.
He explains in the video that it is important to understand that skateparks like in Crystal Palace are "not sports facilities" but instead are vital community spaces that can unite people of all ages and backgrounds.
"In my mind, they're one of the world's great kinds of public space," he concluded.
Open House London takes place at venues across London and online from 19 to 27 September. Videos will be published on Dezeen each day during the festival. See Dezeen Events Guide for details of more architecture and design events.

Photography and photo retouching in BD
All about BD Photography Industry   Nowadays many new photographers enter the photo trade. The BD photography industry includes everything from studio photographers to photojournalists, from wedding photo retouchers to boudoir photo editors. And only those maintainers of consistently high quality offer valuable products, paid photography, and image editing prizes that earn a living wage, excel in marketing, and have good status and work hard to support a family or make their customers Satisfied with the results, staying in business and increasing the profession.   The BD Photography industry has undergone some changes as digital cameras and post-production technologies have increasingly impacted operators. Do you know the state of photography and professional photo retouching? Today we will come across some key points, such as general photography genres, top cities for working as a photographer, best photographers and image retouching in the BD, and what should we expect from modern professionals in the photographic industry? What is the most comfortable condition for working photographers in the BD?   Do you know what things and conditions make a city enjoyable for a shooting job? What guidelines can help you decide which condition is better? First of all, it will be good to know how much money you need to survive in this city. The next step is to take the average wage of shooters from each of the cities and compare them to the price of city living, and larger paid contracts mean a chance for luxury and good living. And of course you should know how many photographers of your genre are in your region. This metric is often used to measure comparative requests for professional photographers. , How much do US photographers charge? Photographers in the BD may demand different prices. If photographing is her hobby - it's free or under $ 100. Photography is her second job and most likely does not follow the best business practices of photography. The second type is amateur photographers who can charge $ 25- $ 75 per hour. These people are like hobbyists. Nevertheless, they have a little more experience in selling their photos. For example, they may have a blog or even an online portfolio.      Popular genres of shooting in the BD   The camera business includes all the photo studios and market photography industry, this company suggests various types of jobs like news photographer, portrait photographer, wedding photographer, sports photographer, commercial adviser and commercial photographer, who are usually specialized in taking up food, product, fashion or industrial photography. In addition, the photography categories industrial photography, architectural photography, nature photography and scientific photography are a great success in all BD countries. Since the advent of digital cameras, film lab technicians, photo retouchers, and photo-outfitters have played a less important role in the photo game.                                                      Photoshelter's third annual survey, based on responses from 7,500 professional photographers and enthusiasts, highlights primary and secondary photography specialties. Interestingly, we've seen that although the main specialty among enthusiasts was landscapes / cityscapes, only 4% of the professionals photograph landscapes / cityscapes as their number one pursuit. What is the top specialty among professional photographers? Portrait photography, closely followed by documentary / photojournalism. look here
Portrait picture is always up   This genre of pictures appeared directly with the birth of the picture. In general, the portraits have to copy the truth of reality; H. An appropriate posture, strict lines of form, an inner world that the viewer captures through their eyes. The focus of the photo is very mobile and can be combined with other photo directions. The bright smile of a handsome model and professional portraiture make your shot an ingenious work of art, even when taken on a white background and captured with a simple camera. Jen Drewyore Beck is an exceptional portrait photographer from Detroit, MI. She really makes stylish glamor photos. Her collection of black and white portraits is unique and breathtaking. It looks very touching.   Lee Towndrow is a New York City-based photographer who makes fantastic portraits. He was a designer when he started making album art. Lee worked with such efficient studios as The Mill, Artjail, MPC, and Method Studios, both as a Visual Effects Supervisor and Senior Compositor.   Portrait photo editing - Body retouching Portraits require special image processing. The foundation of this post-production process includes smoothing the skin, brightening the eyes, nasal and lip processing, correcting the make-up of the model, and removing the hair with strands to look optimal. It's obvious that the person in your picture is the main area of interest - but sometimes, if you place him / her in different contexts with different backgrounds, you can dramatically change the mood in a recording. Experiment with background. Portrait photo retouching is on a high level if the photo still looks natural after Photoshop. Do not forget the common problem with eye-tracking in digital images - removing the red-eye effect that can be easily edited without losing sight of nature. The most commonly used stage for portraiture is the high-end editing level. Only professional editors can do it right.
Photojournalism and news photographers today There are a lot of great BD shooters that verify everything under the sky and above. The key role of every photojournalist is a visual narrator. By making pictures, editing pictures, and presenting photos, these people express a story that no television or other media can. John Decker is a Northern California award-winning photojournalist and professional shooter who has more than 20 years of experience, photographing unusual and historical moments. John was the staff photojournalist for California Governor and movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger, where he traveled around the world recording the actions and events attended by Governor and First Lady Maria Shriver.     How do photojournalists do professional photo editing? Any good journalism requires professional photo retouching - and that includes pictures as well. There are some principles in this photo genre that every professional photographer should follow - choosing, cropping, enhancing, and resizing. Sometimes, online retouching services can help you make extreme shots in another state or even another country. Professional editors can change the brightness, make the photo color correction or even increase the sharpness of an image.   The most sought after spot in the BD wedding photographer , Wedding prices are a problem, but it seems that the more you are able to get a wedding, the more complicated and stressful your wedding will be. Every professional wedding photographer should collect good photographic equipment for shooting events.   New Orleans and Austin / San Antonio areas. She specializes in making a meeting and a wedding day, with a relaxed demeanor, natural poses and a professional approach. Your job is to save memories and moments, and that is always their top priority. Chrisman Studios is a 4-shooter wedding photography company and 1 videographer focused on innovative and unusual documentary wedding photography and movies. Their headquarters are in Charleston and San Francisco, but these guys had photo sessions in different countries: Spain, Bali, Jamaica, Italy, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Greece, England and others. Chrisma's wedding photography business is creative, warm and loyal. They are currently referred to by the Wedding Photojournalist Association as the best professional wedding photographers in the world.   ________________________________________ What does the wedding picture postproduction include? Do you know the key problem of all photographers? It is the lack of time, besides, it is not always in the wedding season, it is usually difficult to handle more than 200 photos per day. Many wedding photo retouching services provide the most important aspects of post production: sorting out, setting the overall sound problems, color correction, correction of shadows and contrast, exposure and saturation. Smoothing of the skin is necessary with each shot, as it is a problem to look good during this stressful but fantastic day throughout the day. You can create a wedding album or book created in the same editing style. This will be a great memory book for your customers.
A guide to BD architectural photography Architecture surrounds us every day and is a very common photography theme, especially in the BD. Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures that are attractively attractive as well as perfect illustrations of their subjects. There are many extraordinary buildings in America: hotels and resorts, historic buildings, monuments, streets, universities and many others, it's difficult to name them all.  Photographer: Maks Erlikh, Bronx, NY, USA This photo genre is not easy, because there are many things to learn when becoming a professional photographer in this photo genre. You should know what the free space around the buildings, the shadows, sculptures, fountains, bridges, lights and other details should look like that are considered simple and unproductive, but in fact they play a major role in enhancing the attractiveness of the home photographed. Aaron Dougherty is a registered architect with more than 25 years of experience in Kansas City, Missouri. He turns churches, sports, industrial and historical buildings, interiors and etc.   Adam Friedberg is a New York architectural archer who specializes in architecture, interior design, portraits, environments and landscapes. Professional Retouching - Architectural Tips   When we control the light, we can convey emotions and feelings, direct emphasis or interest to specific areas of the photo, add life, highlight color and detail, enhance contrast, and more. Perspective and contextual problems can occur when photographing outdoors, while indoor distortion may occur. Other issues can be scaling, vignette, chromatic aberration, and color accuracy. Observe these points during the photo editing process. People, cars and other items should be removed. Here the background editing really helps.

1960 Pop Artists
DRAWING ARTISTS
MR BRAINWASH Mr. Brainwash is a Los Angeles-based street artist, and he apparently worked as a security guard, and amateur videographer who was first introduced to street art by his cousin, the street artist Invader, and who filmed street artists through the 2000s and progressed into an artist in his own right which was suggested from Banksy. A number of critics have observed that his works strongly emulate the styles and concepts of Banksy, was that Guetta did an elaborate prank staged by Banksy, who may have created the works himself. His work sold for five-figure sums at his self-financed debut exhibit Life Is Beautiful, due to his street art market, and – according to Banksy – his misuse of endorsements from Banksy and Fairey. The exhibit was held in Los Angeles, California, on June 18, 2008, and was a popular and successful. In October 2013, Guetta took part in Art Wars at the Saatchi Gallery curated by Ben Moore. Guetta was issued with a Stormtrooper helmet, which he transformed into a work of art, the work was also shown on the Regents Park platform as part of Art below Regents Park.
STUART SEMPLE Stuart Semple was born in 1980 and is a contemporary British artist and curator, which bases it on London and Dorset a he lives there. Known for his large scale canvases incorporating text and found imagery, Semple's ideas were made into popular culture and combines contemporary figurative painting with pop art. Semple’s work has strong links with Richard Hamilton’s Pop Art, but Stuart Semple’s work is about  the emotional and spiritual impact of mass culture  and hamilton is more culture and glamour. Born in Dorset in 1980, Stuart Semple became an artist after a traumatic near death experience at the age of 19 whilst studying Fine Art at Breton Hall in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. He has participated in 15 international solo exhibitions.he has a great knowledge of critical analysis of culture. His public creations are based about the 1960s sort of Era!
CONNECTION WITH 3D ARTISTS
PURE EVIL Pure evil is an artist and paints tears to flood out of the frames and onto the floor, this creats an effect which draws the eye and outstands from other paintings Becoming an artist was his “destiny”, he says.  He was exposed to the art world by his father, the Welsh painter, John Uzzell Edwards. Holidays would go for visits to galleries and museums. Stepping out of his father’s footsteps, Charley decided to study fashion design at Kingston University. So with a degree in hand, Charley flew over to San Francisco and worked for Fashioning items for skate and snowboarders allowed him to become immersed in street culture by absorbing the work happening around him. Being low on income he started painting and said “ art will set you free. And that’s what it did.” He spent the next few years continuing to work as a graphic and fashion designer, moving out of the Welsh countryside to London. But his interest in street art was growing as he began spraying his evil bunny on shadowed walls. However, following a jaunt to Paris in 2004, Blek le rat told him “you could make a living from this…”and from then he worked with Blek le rat. He then recognises that there is a divide in urban art genres From the research I found out was that his work is to create a sense of fredoom also a political statement for street art.
PHOTOGRAPHY ARTISTS
CECIL BEATON Cecil born on the 14 January 1904 was an English fashion, portrait and war photographer he has an Academy Award–winning stage and costume designer for films and the theatre. Cecil Beaton is one of the most remembered British Portrait Photographers of the Twentieth Century and is known for his style. His influence on portrait photography and his work inspired David Bailey. Beaton received the ultimate establishment seal of approval when he was commissioned by the Royal Family in 1939. The exhibition includes two studies of HM Queen Elizabeth.  With the outbreak of the Second World War, Beaton devoted himself to his work as an official war photographer. He won an Oscar for the fashion designs he did for films such as Gigi.
MARTHA ROSLER Martha Rosler an American artist which works on photography, sculpture and performance as well as writing about art and culture. Rosler’s work is based on everyday life and public areas often focused on women’s experiences. Recurrent concerns are the media and war, as well as architecture and the built environment, from housing and homelessness to places of passage and systems of transport. Martha Rosler is an eminent artist, theorist and educator with a critical voice within feminist discourses. Rosler studied at Brooklyn College in New York and subsequently at the University of California, San Diego, obtaining her MFA there in 1974. She collages magazine photography with depictions of ideal homes, producing a single incongruous frame as a way of highlighting the contrast of the two public discourses.

Times Like These, Panama Film Festival 2017
By M.G. Poe Hosted by the Panamanian International Film Festival (PIFFLA.com) in conjunction with NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA), Panafest, is the annual international celebration of Latino film, art, and culture hosted. In its third year, this all-day event, takes place on Saturday, November 4, at the South Park Center Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Panafest began to create awareness of the filmmaking talents in the burgeoning Panamanian film industry. Today, Panafest has broadened in scope to include films from the gamut of Latin America as well as United States Latino talents. It has blossomed into a fully-fledged multi-cultural Latino festival event that includes visual arts and exhibits, industry panels, music, dance, and even culinary samples (and a complimentary open bar with full-day pass purchase) in addition to its expected catalogue of shorts and feature screenings, Q&A with filmmakers, and wide networking opportunities.

Panafest LA began as the creative brain-child of festival director, actor, and Panamanian-Los Angelino Carlos Carrasco. Mr. Carrasco, Hollywood veteran of screen and stage, has co-starred in such feature films as Parker, Double Take, Across the Line, One Man’s Hero, Speed, Blood In…Blood Out, The Burning Season and The Fisher King as well guest starring on various television series, and appearing on Broadway.
His Co-Director is Panamanian filmmaker, videographer, photographer, and editor Maia De Zan Hatch.
“I really, really like the programming that we have this year,” Carrasco says. “When I was a kid there was ZERO [film] industry in Panama….[becoming an actor], wasn’t anything you actually did, it was a hobby. So, I literally had to leave the country. I was fortunate enough, to get an acting scholarship here in the States. Fast forward, a hundred years, and there is now an emerging film industry in Panama that has really only come about in the last ten years, or so.”

Mr. Carrasco goes on to cite the International Film Festival of Panama, (IFF, Panama) now in its seventh year, as the incentive for the creation of Panafest. “There was a real need to create a venue that would open a dialogue between the filmmakers down there and the industry out here for mutual benefit. So, the idea was born to create a Panamanian festival version of the international festival there”
LA MATAMOROS Trailer

Panafest’s featured screenings include a vibrant variety of shorts and documentaries from countries such as Panama, Cuba, Spain, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Venezuela, Mexico and the U.S., and will span the genres from comedy to horror with subjects from feminism to immigration to technology and political resistance. Up and coming filmmakers include Adrian Manzano, (The Audition, La Internship), Juan Martinez Vera, (Spark), Glorimar Marrero (Todavía), Michael Flores (Mi Tesoro), and so many more. Each short will range between 2 to 20 minutes. Two additional full-length documentaries, La Matamoros, about the life of Panamanian union labor and gender equality activist, Marta Matamoros by Delfina Vidal, and The Last Colony, a film written by 4-time Emmy Award winning director Juan Agustín Márquez, profiling the long and complicated relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States.
Panels sessions include: Social Media for Filmmakers, Working with Unions, Crowdfunding and Shooting in Central America.
 THE LAST COLONY

Carrasco stresses that part of the purpose of Panafest is also to widen the perspective of others regarding the quality of work and diversity to be found across the Latin American world. He speaks of the need to not only broaden the narrow vision people from outside Latino communities have of Latinos, but also the need to broaden that vision that Latinos have of themselves, because even within the Latino communities, internal prejudices and stereotypes exist.
When questioned about the preponderance of socio-political topics included in this year’s event he responds:
“The one thing I want to make clear, is that my agenda is not political. Having said that, I also am a great believer that art should not happen in a vacuum. I don’t believe in chamber art. I don’t see that as a function of art. I think art connects us to the world. To the real world. [Art] can comment on the world, and it can comment on it in a lot of ways. Aristotle said first you must entertain, and then you can educate. The top priorities are still: is it good? Is it well written? Is it well acted entertainment? Is it fun? Is it dynamic? These have to come first. You must first entertain, and then you can educate.”
With its preponderance of talent and subject matter, this year’s Panafest, is well prepared to do both.

The BMW Concept 8 Series: An Architecture of Luxurious Athleticism
I’m standing in a capacious warehouse situated in an industrial section of Milan, just a stone’s throw from the Fondazione Prada with the convivial Marc Girard, Head of Design Concept Cars at BMW. Under a scaffolding of seraphic studio lights illuminating his team’s yet to be unveiled creation, we stand before the BMW Concept 8 Series, a dormant predator glowing softly for the moment.
BMW is keeping mum about specifics, noting this concept is primarily an expression of intent.
I’m here for an early preview of a vehicle destined to be unveiled only a few days later across the storied showcase of Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como, an auto event where beauty is paramount over all.
The photo venue’s vicinity to Fondazione seems appropriate considering the vehicle before me – all sinewy, sculptural muscularity in harmonious proportion to the luxurious hallmarks bestowed onto the concept – playing as much with contrast as continuity, modernity pushing against the bounds of the automotive brand’s heritage, a freedom normally afforded to artists, rarely designers. The concept’s silhouette is alluring, every curve accentuated by the aforementioned lighting working its magic across the mesmerizing Barcelona Grey Liquid coat, an exterior finish inflected with iridescence and unique to the vehicle. The desire to touch the paint is unbearable.
Marc Girard, Head of Design Concept Cars at BMW, directs final footage of the interior in Milan.
The 8 Series moniker has been shelved for nearly two decades. BMW ceased production in 1999, a fact Girard is very well aware of – and almost winces at mention of – possibly a reaction in acknowledgment of the expectations that come attached with such a notable absence and anticipated return. 2018 couldn’t come quicker.
The BMW Concept 8 Series is our take on a full-blooded high-end driving machine,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “It is a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other. For me, it’s a slice of pure automotive fascination.
Initially, Girard relaxingly follows a script meant to highlight key features – “dynamic”, “uncompromising”, and “expressive” spills forth in continuity as he walks me around, pointing out the stylized cues of a concept vehicle only millimeters in refinement in certain sections from production, but still every bit a concept show car: the pronounced musculature of metal moulded over the radiance of 21″ light-alloy wheels, trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes deserving of a protractor’s attention, the iconic twin kidney grills now brought together by an unbroken frame to form a single large element, the architectural steps of laser headlights glaring cold and bright with the menacing visage of a shark.
Every angle rewards both an immediate and more studied view, sometimes looking every bit the part of BMW lineage, other times not immediately recognizably so. Unlike many concept cars designed with the intention to surprise fleetingly, there’s no audacity in form, only in the spirit. BMW’s expression here has been given the breathing room to impress discovery with unhurried.
Careful to navigate the team of photographers/videographers gathering the final details for worldwide release, Girard allows me to lean in to inspect the suede soft brown and “Fjord White” interior ambience wrapped across racing-style bucket seats, each cupped by an expanse of sporty carbon fibre, the hand-polished aluminum stretched throughout, and ant lines of eye-catching red stitching hewn across the center and door leather panels. A faceted gearshift lever and iDrive Controller made from Swarovski glass with a smoky quartz sits center, a tactile luxury in a vehicle intended to communicate speed with luxurious spirit. The edited simplicity of the interior presents a statement of luxury through less.
Only once our compulsory walk around is completed does Marc Girard relax to share beyond rote remarks, revealing an interesting detail harbored deep in memory only after we chit-chat about design outside of the realm of the automotive.
“I have a long interest in architecture. So, you could say the [Concept 8 Series] design found some influence from a field trip our team took two years. You’re from Los Angeles…so you know about the Salk Institute in San Diego, right?” leaning in every so slightly in anticipation of affirmation.

I nod in agreement and Girard stares off for a heartbeat in remembrance of the modernist architectural masterpiece of form, function, and landscape.
“The architecture of that place…it was very…you know, incredible. The lines drawing out into the distance, into the ocean. I think it left its mark on us. We all left blown away and I knew afterward what we needed to do.”
Afforded this off-script moment, the Concept 8 Series takes on another layer of experience, defined by something as indescribable as the monumental architecture of Louis Kahn. And just like that,  as all lines of the Salk Institute draw toward infinitely toward the Pacific Ocean, I can now see all lines of Girard’s BMW design team’s work exhibited across the BMW Concept 8 Series pointing infinitely toward the road of possibilities.
